A phony hit man extorts money from his targets to keep them alive -- a lucrative and relatively safe gig until some of his supposed "victims" start showing up alive. Then he has to hit the road to escape retribution from the gang that hired him, but not before his neighbors, Buster Hightower and his lady-love Carla Chance, throw their lot in with him to help him elude his nefarious pursuers. Madcap adventures ensue in this first of the Buster Hightower mysteries, featuring a stand-up comic who refuses to use blue language but never met a lawyer joke he didn't love. Gary Alexander's dry humor and smart plotting shine in this zany caper reminiscent of It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World combined with classic comedic whodunnits.
"This fast-paced crime story is told from multiple points of view and includes numerous plot twists, quirky characters, a romance, and some dark humor." Booklist

Small time comedian Buster Hightower and his girlfriend are friendly with their neighbor Ted. Then they learn that Ted's been scamming the mob and needs their help. He's set himself up as a hit man, but instead of killing his targets, he arranges for them to find new identities. Jimmy Brutto, his latest "victim," is too stupid to stay under police radar, which means that the mob knows that Ted has not been doing his job. It also means that the former Mrs. Brutto--Beth to her friends--is in the hole to the insurance company for the settlement she received.
A quick reading mystery. Good plot line with interesting characters. Combines mystery and comedy, my favorite themes. I'll be reading more by Gary Alexander!
