David Anthony Llewellyn Owen, Baron Owen CH PC FRCP (born 2 July 1938) is a British politician. Owen served as British Foreign Secretary from 1977 to 1979, the youngest person in over forty years to hold the post. In 1981, Owen was one of the "Gang of Four" who left the Labour Party to found the Social Democratic Party (SDP). Owen led the SDP from 1983 to 1987, and the continuing SDP from 1988 to 1990. He sat in the House of Lords as a crossbencher until March 2014, and now sits as an "independent social democrat".

في المرض وفي القوة......ديفيد أوين

كتاب لابد أن يُقرأ، وخاصة في المجتمعات اللي بتعاني من هوس الحاكم بالسيطرة عليها، كتاب عن متلازمة الغطرسة وأمراض زعماء الدول خلال السنوات ال100 الأخيرة، عن التاريخ الخفي لشخصيات غيّرت وجه التاريخ الحديث، من تشرشل وهتلر وروزفلت وستالين مرورا بشاه إيران وأيزنهاور وديغول وغيرهم وصولا لبوش الأب والإبن وتوني بلير.

الكتاب عرض تاريخي ممتع لجانب وحيد للشخصيات المؤثرة وهو الجانب الصحي لديهم وكيف تعاملوا مع أمراضهم وأثرت عليهم، من أمريكا لأوروبا والاتحاد السوفيتي والشرق الأوسط، كل زعماء هذه المناطق عانوا من أمراض نفسية عديدة، أمراض كان لها أثرها.

لولا الغطرسة والغرور وجنون العظمة والاكتئاب الشديد، لما عانى العالم كل هذا الدمار والخراب، كل هؤلاء الزعماء كان لهم نصيبهم من هذه الاضطرابات النفسية، واستطاعوا التظاهر بعكسها ليخدعوا الشعوب، ولأن الجموع مهما اختلفت ومهما تنوعت مجتمعاتها تبقى قطيع، يسمع ويجيب ويؤيد ويهلل ويخرج في مظاهرات تأييد، ولا ينظر للثمن الذي سيدفعه نتيجة لهذا التأييد لرجل لم يكن خلفه هدف سوى جنون عظمة وغرور.

الكتاب لطيف جدا، تأريخي ممتاز، ومعروض ببساطة، ويمكن وظيفة المؤلف كوزير خارجية سابق مكنته من الاطلاع على تفاصيل والقرب من دواير الحكم جعلته يرى رؤيا العين ما خفي عن الكثيرين.

It's difficult to know quite how to rate this book, as David Owen himself doesn't seem to have a particularly clear idea of what the main aim of his book is. The core of the work is his piece on a proposed 'hubris syndrome' that affects the judgement of certain people in positions of power, in this case Tony Blair and George W. Bush in the run-up to and handling of the Iraq War. Proposing a new psychological diagnosis is always controversial (as is removing or altering an existing one), but Owen doesn't even seem to be suggesting it's a psychological disorder, which makes one wonder why he bothers to devote so much time to it to begin with. The notion that power corrupts is hardly anything new or radical, nor is the notion that some people are more susceptible to the trappings of power than others. The whole thing becomes even harder to take seriously when one takes Owen's own personality into account, as anyone who has followed his political career over the decades knows that his actions in the 1980s were pretty intensely hubristic themselves.

The rest of the book, despite being added as padding, actually fares a bit better. The idea of how to safeguard against the impact of physical and mental illnesses on the decision-making abilities of world leaders, both democratically and undemocratically chosen, is obviously a matter of grave importance to literally the entire world, and there have been many cases over the past centuries where clearly incapacitated leaders took actions they may not have otherwise. Owen's evidence is a bit conflicting when it comes to the actual outcomes of concealed illnesses in leaders though--obviously a lot is dependent on the nature of the illness, as well as the nature of the leader and the support offered by others in the government and close to the leader. It's a psychological blow to the people to know that their elected heads of state deceive them about their health, but is it always necessary to divulge medical information if it hasn't been shown to affect the ability to govern? Given the ongoing stigma about mental health issues, despite how widespread it is among leaders in particular (estimates are that as many as 49% of US presidents and over 70% of British prime ministers may have had some degree of mental illness at some point in their lives), this seems a particularly sensitive area.

All in all, it's a weird hodge-podge of a book, and tends to be rather self-serving, but it still contains a decent overview on the case histories of past leaders (Eden, JFK, the Shah of Iran, Mitterand) and some interesting potential proposals for the future.

يقول المؤلف -الذي كان يشغل منصب وزير خارجية بريطانيا- أنه لو علم بإصابة الشاه بمرض سرطان الغدد الليمفاوية لضغط مع فرنسا وأمريكا باتجاه نصح الشاه بعلاج مرضه في خارج إيران ومن ثم الدفع نحو تحول ملكي ديمقراطي من أجل تجاوز الثورة وتخفيف الاحتقان، وبالتالي لما حصل غزو أفغانستان ولا تشكلت التنظيمات الجهادية التي ضربت أبراج نيويورك ولا حصلت حرب الخليج الأولى والثانية ولما حصلت الحروب الطائفية بين السنة والشيعة، كذلك أصيب ميتران بسرطان البروستات وتلقى علاجات هرمونية وكيميائية، هل يكون ذلك كله قد أثر على سياسته في رواندا ويوغوسلافيا وجعله متردداً يريد تجنب المخاطر وترك الأمور تسير كما اتفق عليه!

لا يمكن اعتبار الاكتئاب والمرض العقلي صفات تنزع الأهلية ممن هم في مناصب عامة، ولقد قيل أن ٢٩٪؜ من رؤساء الولايات المتحدة مصابون بأمراض عقلية تتراوح بين الاكتئاب والهوس ومتلازمة ثنائي القطبية، في المقابل هناك رؤساء عظام تشكلت صفات زعامتهم من خلال تجربة الاكتئاب التي وصلت لحد التفكير بالانتحار مثل لينكولن، وقد يتم تشخيص حالة الزعماء السياسيين بأثر رجعي بصفتهم مصابين بأمراض عقلية، وقد يبقى الجمهور غير مستعداً لقبول التشخيص لاسيما إذا كان هؤلاء الزعماء أبطال قوميين، كثير من السياسيين لم يسلم من مشاكل الهوس والاكتئاب والاضطراب العاطفي.

يُعد الكتاب وثيقة تاريخية صحية سياسية، فهو ليس كتاب يشرح أعراض مرض الرؤساء، بل هو عمل يقدم قراءة تاريخية سياسية لما صاحب ملابسات أمراضهم التي خفيت على أنصارهم وأعدائهم، وإن كانت قد أثرت على قراراتهم المصيرية.

هذا الكتاب يكشف عن جانب مهم في علاقة السلطة بالامراض معتمدا على فرضية ان الامراض الجسدية والنفسية التي تصيب الحكام في جميع دول العالم لها تأثير في اتخاذ القرارات السياسية ، وهذه القرارات بدورها لها التأثير على خلق اتجاهات سياسية داعمة لحروب معينة أو خلق انعطافات سياسية متعلقة بالعلاقات الدولية ، وعليه فان وضع تشريعات قانونية في عملية الترشح للحكم والحصول على السلطة يتم فيها الكشف عن الحالة المرضية للحاكم اصبح ضرورة انسانية لتجنب الاخطاء والاخفاقات التي يعتمد اي حاكم مصاب بمرض مؤثر على قراراته .
الكتاب يدخل في تفاصيل كثيرة جدا عن حياة الرؤساء الذين تعاقبو على الحكم وهم مصابين بامراض جسدية ونفسية ، هذه التفاصيل لا يمكن ان تتوفر الا حينما يكون كاتبها طبيب معالج وفي الوقت نفسه ممارس للسياسة ، تمكن الكاتب وهو يمكن كلا الجانبين من تقديم تفاصيل تجعل القارئ امام فرضية قريبة للواقع بشكل كبير .

حول علاقة المرض و تأثيره على الزعماء السياسيين في قيادة دولهم و الجدل القانوني المحتدم في أحقية الشعب حول معرفة الحالة الصحية للقائد السياسي بما يتعارض مع قسم أبيقراط و حق المريض في الحفاظ على سرية مرضه

الكتاب مليء بالسرد الطويل لعدد من القادة السياسيين و تأثير المرض على سلوكهم أبرز جون كينيدي و الفرق الكبير بين تعامله الضعيف في أزمة خليج الخنازير و رصانته في أزمة الصواريخ الكوبية

أعجبني في الكتاب نقده اللاذع لغطرسة جورج بوش و توني بلير في احتلالهم للعراق و كيف جرت قراراتهم الكارثية لتدميره بعد سقوط صدام و استفرادهم بالقرارات

في نهاية الكتاب يعرج المؤلف بشيء من التفصيل حول ما ينبغي معرفته شعبياً حول مرض القائد السياسي و هل من حق الشعب قبل التصويت أن يطلع على حالته الصحية أم لا ؟

Some interesting things in there, mostly information about leaders and their illness. The moral is very short and he kept repeating it now and then. Also he clearly lacks a talent in writing. Good book to check some things on the subject but otherwise nothing great.

¿Es posible que las enfermedades de los mandatarios tengan influencia en las decisiones de estado que toman? ¿Qué pasa si uno tiene una depresión o algún tipo de locura? ¿Hay algnna forma de garantiar que su enfermedad no influya en ciertas decisiones?

Preguntas como esta se plantea el autor de este libro, que es un neurólogo y expolítico inglés. En este libro no sólo reflexiona sobre las preguntas anteriores, sino sobre el síndrome de Hybris, que no es otro que aquel en el que un mandatario se vuelve tan creído que se cree en la suprema posesión de la razón.

También da un repaso sobre las enfermedades de algunos de los polítixos del siglo XX ( y algunos del XXI) y de ciertas decisiones que tomaron, y si fueron con el consenso de su parlamento. Repasa lo de Bahía de lo Cochinos, la invasión de Irak, etc

Personalmene, algún tema me interesaba más que otro, lo que me ha obligado a saltar alguna parte. No obstante, es interesante.

David Owen wrote a really excellent and informative book called 'The Hubris Syndrome: Blair Bush and the seduction of Power' and the basis of its sales he decided to expand his thesis, which was excellent when based on his own experience, into a longer in which has nothing interesting or insightful to say. Skip this poor stuff and read Hubris.

El libro es muy interesante para describir como algunos mandatarios de grandes potencias sufrieron de enfermedades que para la mayoría de personas nos resultaba desconidas, también describe el síndrome del hybris que aunque no cuenta a��n como terminó médico si es algo que se ve reflejado en muchos mandatarios, lo cual hace que se tomen decisiones erróneas.

Quizá se podría haber quedado en la mitad de páginas. A veces se centra demasiado en analizar el aspecto político (tanto, que a veces divaga y se va por los cerros de Úbeda), y menos en el tema de las enfermedades. También parece un poco obsesionado con buscar síntomas de trastorno bipolar en cada político que analiza.

Como aspecto positivo, destacar las interesantes notas acerca de las características de determinadas enfermedades y cómo estas afectan al organismo, así como su análisis del "síndrome de Hybris", que desde luego ha afectado y afecta a la mayoría de políticos en el poder. 3,5 estrellas pues.
