A clan chief has a duty to wed and produce heirs, especially if he also carries within him the power to keep his people safe from the evil that seeks to triumph over them. But Bren Mac Coinnach has long refused to take just any wife. He secretly waits for the one woman that legend says will be his and his alone: his perfect other half, and each year of waiting grows longer and more difficult than the last.
When a woman is placed under his protection, he makes a vow not to touch her against her own will, and he soon realizes it won't be an easy vow for him to keep, especially since her will seems made of iron. Bren hungers for her with a need stronger than he has ever felt before, but in a world filled with magic and the timeless, endless battle between good and evil, both his honor and her life are soon at stake.
Faith McAlpin had never thought she was much different from anyone else… but she is, and always has been. She would soon learn just how different, and the lessons come fast and furious, until she wonders if she will lose herself entirely, especially to the fiery passion and mesmerizing gaze of the Mac Coinnach Chief. Now the struggle has only begun…
Kella McKinnon lives in New England on a mini-farm with her husband and three children, and is finally making time for her favorite past-time: writing passionate stories that take the reader away to another time or place.
First let me say I was drawn in by the cover - that sexy tattoo and muscular body (SWOON). I was hoping that this would be a magical dragon shape-shifter type novel, however, it had nothing to do with shape-shifting into a dragon but it was still enjoyable as the author introduces some magical powers gifted to a clan from an old heritage of druids and wizards.
The book kept me intrigued and I just wanted more in the end. Actually at the end of the book I couldn't wait to buy the second book in the series. I loved the mixture of historical highlanders with fantasy (magic and wizards) and time-travel (magical ring brings a true mate from the future back into the past).
The characters are humorous and the highlanders are stubborn with a viciously all male tough guy demeanor - like me man, you woman, I protect ye. LOL Their connections were like old souls and I felt like I'd known them for ever.
The romance was sweet, emotional, and I thought the erotic scenes were a rating of 2 flames. They got the point across with out being too explicit.
This author is new to me and I'm glad I got this book. There were only a few minor errors with typo's but I think it was due to probable uploading it to Amazon because it was like the letter "e" was left off the word "the" or the letter "n" left off of "then".
Overall, great read and I'm excited to read the next book in the series.
I really enjoyed this book. I was surprised considering mixed reviews on Amazon. One review, a rant so bad I could hardly understand what the reviewer was talking about. I have to say it is what made me read the book.
I am not usually into magic in stories but this was well done. It's a love story about a clan Chief in 1526. He is Bren Mac Connach a fierce and dangerous man with the firm belief that he cannot ever marry unless he meets his true mate. He comes from a long line of strong of fierce warriors of magic who believe in good while having to fight the evil of Mored the evil in old age Scotland. His healer soccerer Dirc goes behind his back to try to summom his true mate because Bren has given up hope of finding her and is showing the effects. It will also take Bren longer then Dirc thinks for Bren to believe anyone is his true mate because he has lost hope. Little does he know that Faith McAlpin in the 21st century has just found a magic ring and will be heading his way.
There is one scene that I question. It was a part of the story and explained that way. Our hero was as uncomfortable with it as we were reading it. Some reviewers cry rape, rape... but I don't happen to see it like that when you take in what happened before and her thoughts and what was at stake at the time. You be the judge.
I find this to be a great love story. I can't wait to read about Bren's brother.
Soooo, I don't want to be mean, as I actually quite liked this book—at least parts of it. But, what I don't get is WHY, when you have a good idea, and you are a decent writer, you wouldn't spend at least SOME time editing your book?!
WHY??!?!
I mean, don't get me wrong, I self-publish, too and I feel the pain of every dang misspelled word that gets past you and realize how hard it is to kill them all, but in this book, it is so bad, it's like she didn't even give a damn, and THAT is insulting to readers. We aren't talking about just a few errors, throughout the entire book quotes and commas were placed willy-nilly, with no consistency at all and the spacing was consistently whacked. I might have overlooked that, if the writing had been dazzling but it wasn't.
It's a good story, if a hair cliche, but def one I am predisposed to like. I lurve time-travel books and I double-LURVE Scotland. And there are a couple of good twists.
But the pacing is off, too. And motivations of characters are sometimes extremely shaky and inconsistent and the sex really isn't very good, either.
All that being said, I DID enjoy this book, at least parts of it, and while I waivered on giving it the 3 stars, in the end, a particularly nice twist won me over, so it gets 3 instead of 2. I doubt I will be reading the next one tho—at least if I have to pay for it.
Bren I don't he's ever been turned down before, "he took a deep breath, his grip on her arm tightening just a little. "Ye are afraid of me?" he demanded, a little roughly." I mean the boy just has a certain amount of control, "she hesitated. Did she not know what he was capable of? "Go! Before I have ye flat on yer back beneath me, because right now I want ye more than my next breath!" I mean the boy has some seriously hot innuendos, "perhaps one day ye will have a stallion to ride. A lass such as ye needs a beast between her thighs and will give her the ride of her life and yet make her want more again." He was looking at her with the very devil sparkling in his liquid brown eyes, and the corner of his mouth turned up wickedly." He will do anything to protect his woman even threaten his brothers, "take Faith back to the castle. Keep her safe, with yer verra life, Eian. I think it is her they are after. I am trusting ye with my woman. Her life is yer life." I loved this book and I can't wait to see the other brothers get a book.
Bren never tries to woo her. He just immediately gets upset when she refused him, then goes off to pout like a child. The conversations between the MCs were too few. And Bren was way too overbearing. He wasn't controlling, at least, but man did he need to back off.
The explanation for magic was thin. Some people are just born with it, like hair color? Ummm that's a cheap cop out. And we had so little explanation of powers or how it worked... And was the dragon just the idea of their crest and tattoos? No one turns into a dragon? Honestly you could have taken the magic out and the story wouldn't have been any different.
I'm a great fan of historical books but mostly those set in Scotland. There is something about neanderthal sword wilding skirt wearing men that hits the spot. A great contrast to the attractiong of proper gents of London. Any who... this book was a great start to the series. Everything might hae been laid out in the beginning concerning the love story but i like that the true story was told in such a great way, full of suspsense. Faith irked me, acting like the last virgin that walked the 21st century but i admired her resolve not to be a plaything but come on, that whole string dance of playing hard to get? Why not lay it down right from the start? i loved the fact that Bren's emotions were so palpable and the reason behind the 5 stars. I enjoy books that i can actually taste the emotion of the characters- it's so rarely seen and i commend the author of bring it out, especially in a man. Mostly it's the woman who is all emotional and this was a nice change. the epilogue, hinting to the next book was a great move on the author's part because now i really want to buy! One thing i found a little annoying- when i read it's continuous and it's a little distracting when the POVs change and the story- especially the main character's love story stops being personal if everyone else is commenting and explaining it and we can't see it unfold on it's own through the characters themselves. It sudenly becomes communual property and the reader doesn't feel like the trusted best friend in on their little secret.
Great read, great first book of the series and I definitely recommend this book. Can't wait to read Drust's story- i have a feeling there is an emotional ride there i will enjoy
This was an awesome highland romance book! It had all of my favorite things in it; Time-travel, Old Scotland with hot warrior men in kilts, some funny moments, mystery & suspense, an evil villain, kidnapping, a romance that grows to true love, and a little bit of magic.
I think this author did a wonderful job putting this story together. She makes you feel like you are a part of this book. Like you are living what the characters are living, feeling what they feel. I admit I even shed a tear at one point in this book! I felt so many emotions reading this. I was even at the edge of my seat (er bed) holding my breath waiting to see if they finally do get their HEA. Which they do of course! It wouldn't be an awesome romance if they didn't!
I highly recommend this book for those who love a good highland romance or time travel book. It does have a couple of descriptive sex scenes in it. If you don't like that you can just skip over them. Don't give the book a lower rating just because you are a prude! I can't stand when people do that. Either don't read the book (since you've now been warned about the scenes), or skip those parts. This author doesn't deserve to have her book rated lower because someone doesn't like love scenes.
Ok, back to gushing about the book...lol I really think all romance lovers should read this book. It's a fun adventure and there isn't any "insta-love". The couple grow to love each other throughout the book. They are fated mates but they really get to know each other before saying "I love you" and just jumping into bed. You are taken on a fun and emotional adventure with a little magic thrown in. It's definitely worth a read! I can't wait to read the next book in the series!
If I was transported to another century I wouldn't be as calm as Faith was. She had the old sorcerer ordering her around and telling her around without an ounce of annoyance or fear. YOU DONT KNOW WHERE YOU ARE! FIGHT BACK! DO SOMETHING! And then when she was kidnapped by a big bad evil wizard all he did was tie her up with ropes, wouldn't a guy like that at least have enchanted cuffs or something? Then all she had to do was tell the women to let her go and she does? Please! Even more she's the missing heir for gods sake and there weren't even guards posted outside of her door! Are you kidding me! Things came way to easy for her and the battles were pathetic and just a bore.
I really wanted to like this book but I found the h Faith to be too accepting of everything that's happened. For someone who went back in time, she didn't even bother to inquire what year it was, how did she know she was in Scotland - because of the mountains? Really? I went back to the start of the book to see if Dirc told her the year but nada hmmm... all in all it was just a so so kind of book.
This book was okay. I was looking for a dragon shifter book (although I saw from reviews prior to starting that that’s NOT what this is, so I knew what I was getting into). The storyline was also decent if commonly used, although with one twist I hadn’t expected. Writing was OK, but some of the descriptions tended towards rambling.
I finished this in about a day, but will not be reading the next book in the series.
Took forever to really start, the interactions between Faith and Bren had no chemistry, he rapes her! (But supposedly for a good cause and she really liked him so it's ok?!), there is a lot to the history that feels left out. Overall I wouldn't recommend it.
I never wanted this book to end. I am not much on time travel but this one is not so much on it just happened. This was funny sad happy unbelievable. Add to your must read you will love it. I hope there is a next book because I have so many questions.
It's been so long since I read a time travel romance this is so good absolutely wonderful. Your going to want to follow the series. You should definitely get the set . The story is perfect and amazing the characters full and interesting.
This book started out great. As a matter of fact, I'd venture to say that for the first 70% of the book, it was just about perfect--well all except for one teeny, tiny flaw, and that was that for just about every other page I had to read about how hard the hero's manhood was whenever he was within smelling distance of the heroine--or so it seemed! LOL. Unfortunately, so many authors use this ploy to create sexual tension between the protagonists, when really, some other method could be used--a glance, a touch, or some small gesture--and much more effectively. Nonetheless, the story was fascinating. It's a time travel romance, but has a few twists and turns that make it unique.
Bren Mac Coinnach is laird of his clan in 1500's Scotland. Legend had it that "every Mac Coinnach chief is fated to have one great love, a perfect other half, and once they become one, the circle of their destiny would be complete. Until that time, he would never truly know peace." Bren had been waiting for years for his soul-mate, but so far she had remained elusive. In present day Washington D.C., the heroine, Faith, finds a ring at the Smithsonian, where she is employed. After finding the ring, Faith is thrown back in time to 1500's Scotland. Once there, events occur which result in Faith being left under Bren's protection. Bren is instantly attracted to Faith, although he doesn't recognize her as his intended mate. He is; however, determined to get the feisty beauty into his bed. I loved the way Faith fought against her attraction to Bren. I was happy she was so determined to not be just another of his conquests, especially because he was so cocky in his belief that he could easily overcome her objections.
There is a magical aspect to the story, with Bren being some kind of powerful wizard who helps maintain the balance between good and evil. The balance of power is tipping towards evil; however, due to the evil Mored, a powerful wizard who's greed for power knows no bounds. In order to fight Mored's evil, Bren must enhance his powers by finding his true mate. The story that unfolds is riveting and kept me spellbound. I was taken by surprise when Faith's familial background was revealed, and impressed with the author's ingenuity. Furthermore, the book is well written, nicely edited, and peopled with a cast of well developed characters, with whom I felt connected. I really liked Bren and Faith as a couple, and loved the interactions between the two.
Unfortunately, the book took a turn for the worse around 70% into the story, after the couple consummate their relationship. From reading a number of reviews, I see there is a debate of sorts about whether or not the consummation constituted rape. I guess I'll weigh in and give my two cents; IMHO, it was not rape. While it's true that Faith did not explicitly agree to sleep with Bren, neither did she object. As a matter of fact, the opposite is true. She accepted within herself that she would lie with him, willingly, although she never verbalized this to Bren. Yes their first joining was somewhat brutal, unnecessarily so, I thought, but the circumstances were such that there was no time for sweet words or foreplay, so you can imagine it was not an easy--er--deflowering. However, even thought I didn't particularly care for that first sex scene, I wasn't overly bothered by it.
What annoyed me is the fact that after the less than auspicious manner in which Faith lost her virginity, she didn't in any way call Bren to account for his actions. Worse, the day after, instead of going to Faith himself and apologising for hurting her, Bren sends a servant to inform Faith that they would be getting married that day. Huh? I was disgusted when Faith just went along with the plan. I wanted her to at least demand that Bren ask for her hand in person! She got angry for all of five seconds at Bren's highhanded assumption that she would agree to marry him, and then meekly acquiesced to his demand. That annoyed me to no end. I didn't care that they were soul-mates and meant to be together!
Furthermore, I was disappointed that at no time was there ever a love scene where Bren made sweet, gentle love to Faith. I really wanted that to occur on their wedding night, considering how brutal their first time together had been. Alas, that was not to be. On more than one occasion Bren would think to himself that he would be gentle and take his time with Faith, but every love scene turned into a wham, bam, thank you ma'am, with barely any foreplay!
All that aside, I really enjoyed the story. It was a five star read for me, right up until around the 70% mark, and then the story took a turn for the worst--at least for me it did. Nevertheless, this is a book that I would recommend as a worthwhile read. It has time travel, magic, romance, and even some intrigue. FYI, in case you couldn't tell from what I've said so far, this is NOT a clean romance! LOL. Happy reading!

At the time Amazon was offering this book for free, so I picked it up to try it out. With the title I was expecting their to be dragons, but of course with my luck no dragons (sad face). I did find myself liking this book more then I expected too. I’m not a big fan of historical romances or time travel, but the author sucked me into this story.
The Magic of Highland Dragons is book one in The Clan MacCoinnach series by Kella McKinnon. We get adventure, magic, history and romance.
Faith is a very likable character, she was level headed and open minded about what happens too her. I liked that about her, so she was put into a positive light right from the start with me.
Bren I was drawn to his masculine charm and charisma. He is clan chief and lord of the MacCoinnach, very powerful and a just ruler. He had me swooning lots of times. I just feel in love with this Scotsmen of old.
The author did a wonderful job describing past Scotland giving us vivd details and making it easy to imagine, also through in a few twists that I did not see coming. They made sense and helped with the whole time travel and why Faith was the one. All the characters where intriguing and interesting in there own way. With the romance we feel the connection building between Faith and Bren, it was rift with seduction and sexual tension. There is one scene that I questioned (some might call rape), but I could not take it that way, because of what happened before, her thoughts, and what was at stake at the time plus our hero was as uncomfortable with it as I was in reading it. Only you can be the judge on how you feel when reading that scene.
The Magic of Highland Dragons is a great start to The Clan MacCoinnach series. I enjoyed this one and the author has left me interested enough to find out what happens with Bren’s brother’s. If their is a women out there that can tame them? Thous who enjoy highlanders and time travel, might want to give this book a try.
While cataloging artifacts, Faith finds a Celtic ring. Or maybe the ring finds her. Fascinated by it, Faith takes the ring home and when she tries it on, she suddenly wakes up far away from home. Hundreds of years and across the Atlantic ocean, to be precise. She's taken to Bren, the Laird of MacCoinnaich, who is sworn to protect her. He promises to give her lodging and to ensure that no one lays a hand on her. Bren doesn't realize how difficult it might be to keep that promise. He's irresistibly drawn to Faith, and though he doesn't suspect that she is the soul mate he's dreamed of, everyone else seems to realize the truth--Faith and Bren are meant to be together.
I really enjoyed this book. The undeniable chemistry between Bren and Faith made this one of the best romance novels I've read in a while. I loved the way the author continuously ratcheted up the tension, and then for one reason or another, pulled back and made Bren and Faith wait a little longer for the ultimate moment between them. And, yes, it was worth the wait. Admittedly, I'm not a fan of time-travel plots, but I was satisfied by the magical explanation behind this tale. The fantasy aspects of this novel were very well done, and though I enjoyed the added bonus of magic, the romance still took front and center in this book. For those who like fantasy, romance, and Scottish tales, this story is definitely for you.
2.5 Stars Not too bad of a story, though it needed a little more editing done.I really liked the MacCoinnach brothers, as well as the basis for the whole story. I also loved that it had the time-travel theme.
What I didn't like was how quickly and easily everything seemed to be resolved. Also, there was one time when I felt Faith was made to do the most obviously stupid cliche thing to bring the bad guy upon her. I also didn't like that sometimes I felt a bit confused with the author's story- like I was being thrown into the middle of something already going on. I suppose I could say I didn't think the story flowed as well as I had hoped. Oh! I almost forgot, too many times the story switches points of view right in the middle of the paragraph. That could get a bit frustrating and confusing- causing me to double check what I had just read.
There is one scene in the story, that I've seen mentioned in other reviews, that is sketchy at best. It's been called Rape and its been rationalized away as not. To be honest, I can see both sides of the coin on this. So, I think I'll leave that up to the next reader to make that decision on whether it was or not. I'm not going to state my opinion in this review.
This is an amazing book! Very well written and edited and oh so very gripping. I read some reviews prior to reading this book and there were some complaints about the "rape" scene...um...what rape? Last I looked, you can't rape the willing and the h clearly decides that before it happens she understands the situation at hand and wants the H to take her. I'm trying hard to not give too much away, so if you read this amazing love story, you will understand my statement. Also, as far as the style of the language used by the author for the highlanders, my opinion is: thank goodness she didn't use the full vernacular for them. It would be very difficult and distracting to read and constantly try to figure out what was meant. The way the author wrote the local vernacular, made it easy to read and still remember the time and place in which the story takes place. This wonderful love story ends with a terrific HEA and a little teaser about the next book in this series.
This book was read for the challenge freeing your freebies for May. As I have a problem with the freebies I'm glad to be getting some off my kindle. I loves this book fro start too finish and I couldn't put it down and kept on telling myself just one more chapter just one more until I had finished it in one sitting. 4 Dragon Stars for this book./b>
Bren MacCoinnach wants to find his one true mate but time is ticking away and it doesn't look good that is until the sorcerer Dirc takes it upon himself to help Bren. It's Medieval Scotland so things are slightly different here.
Meanwhile present day Washington Faith is working at the Smithsonian and is cataloguing pottery and stones that is until a box from Scotland is opened and she finds a beautiful celic ring with twin dragons she takes it home to study and tries it on and guess where she lands yep in Medieval Scotland.
This is well written and there are some great moments between Bren and Faith with a fantastic ending. The epilogue leads to the second book which is about Brens brother Drust.
I absolutely loved this book and already ordered the second.
Faith leads a rather plain life and works in a museum. She finds a box of Scottish artifacts and in it is a beautiful ring. She decides to take it home so she can search the markings on it and after she puts it on she is transported back in time to Scotland of old. She is found by Dirc (the man who set in motion her return home) and is taken before Bren MacCoinnach the leader of the Clan MacCoinnach. He has been tasked with the safety and prosperity of his people. He has never taken a wife because he truly believes the legend that says there is one true love for him, his true mate.
Upon meeting Faith he realizes she is his true mate but a promise to Dirc to take care of her and not fool around keeps him from doing anything foolish with her. Faith comes to realize she loves Bren and that she truly was born into this time period Scotland but doesn't know how.
The book is about love and magic what can happen when you believe in both.
I bought this be originally because I fell in love with the cover... Not necessarily a good reason I know, but I have to say that I was enthralled! It was my first book by this author, but I am definitely a big fan now! The story was not at all what I expected, so to say I was pleasantly surprised would be an under statement. I just didn't want to put the book down until I had finished.... much to my hubby's chagrin. And yep, I'm happy to say I will be beginning book 2 tomorrow morning. The characters are strong, well developed, and believable while keeping the love scenes to a nice mid level making the book appropriate for all ages. If you enjoy Romance, a bit of magic, a girls dreams of fined love ed in Scotland, you should really enjoy this series. Now I'm a big fan, and on to reading book 2. Enjoy...
I liked this. Very much. The story is a little far fetched at first… the idea of travelling back in time at the whim of an old sorcerer set my teeth on edge a little… but once I got over myself and slipped into the narrative I was happily entertained until the very last word. I adored the way Bren Mac Coinnach was written. I loved the suspicious way he dealt with Faith and the unraveling of his gruff nature. Faith is a little flat as a character at first but develops nicely as the book carries through. The vow to not harm her or touch her unless she asks for him, makes for fun and games and the external threat to the Mac Coinnach’s brings its own intrigue. Over all a very enjoyable read and I will be looking for the second book in the series… How could I not? Poor Drust!
When i saw this book i fell in love with cover, when i finished reading it i fell in love with Bren Mac Coinnach and his brothers! I just wish that i could find a ring to transport me back into time and find a hunk like that. Some one that knows what he wants and takes it, but has so much passion it melts ice. ((shiver))
This book has a lot going on in the story we have lust, mystery, love, and even some lost love. We have an evil wizards who is after all the power he can collect and of course we amazing hot kilt wearing highlanders with special family magic!
It was truly a wonderful book, easy to follow you didn't have the bouncing around like you do in normally time travel books. I'm so looking forward to reading the 2 reminding books in this series!
This story was not something that I would have normally picked for myself, but I really enjoyed it.
There was time travel, magic and finding one's true love included. A strong fearless Laird ruling his clan and a history major from our time meet and fall for each other.
I was not offended with any part of the story and the one scene that some people complained about wasn't as bad as made out to be, it was integral to the story and explained well. The Hero showed remorse and begged for forgiveness.
I enjoyed this story and hope to read more from this author in the future.
