Cal's world splinters apart when he finds out he's been in a deliberately induced coma state for most of his life, and what he thought was real was only an illusion. Escaping his captors, Cal goes on the run, determined to fight the forces behind the nightmare he finds waiting for him in the real world, and to discover his true identity. A tense and gripping thriller where nothing is as it seems, from a talented author whose writing cuts straight to the bone—spiky, uncompromising, and deeply moving.

**3.5 stars**

I mean, it was alright. It is extremely fast paced, which I expected anyways, but maybe some parts could have been elaborated a little bit more. Some things just seemed to have happened way too quickly and strong relationships were formed in a span of 3 days, which I think is highly unlikely, no matter how 'new' to the world you are.

Also, took me about 120 pages to actually get a little invested into this book. The size of it surely hints to a one day read but it took me a couple days as I couldn't get stuck into it like I usually do with books.

Either way, I'm glad I've read it. Very different to what I would usually read, and does question my brain at parts. Sometimes a little confusing. Wish the ending was more elaborate and not so rushed, though.

WOW what an amazing dystopian fast paced thriller for young adults called Cracks by Caroline Green.

Unbeknown to Cal Conway he has been placed in an induced coma for twelve years and one day he starts seeing cracks everywhere. He believes that he has lived a family life with his Stepfather Des, his stepbrother Ryan known as Pigface to Cal because he has a face like a pig and is half as smart and his Mother Tina but all is not what it appears as Cal finds out later on.

There is lots of humour in this thriller alongside a dark futuristic big brother organisation. When he finally wakes up from his coma he is now in the year 2014 and everything he knew has changed drastically.

This is also a coming of age for Cal when he meets a young girl called Kyla who is part of a gang who have a leader of the pack called Zander who is like Fagin from Oliver Twist as he likes to pick a pocket or two. Cal also befriends Jax who also likes Kyla but unfortunately she only sees him as a brother.

The ending will blow you away as Cal's journey comes to an end.

What a great book! Although this is a young teen book the story is really gripping and unpredictable at times. I would definitely recommend it.

An enjoyable light read. Nothing very original in the plot, the characters are clichéd and there a few too many plot holes but it's well paced. Nice holiday read.

Cracks, what a brilliant book! First of all, a huge thank you to Piccadilly Press for sending me a copy for review, because I loved this book so much! This is the first I've read by Caroline Green, and I'm so glad to have been introduced to such a talented YA writer. Cracks is a very thrilling read with a unique story line. And the writing, the beautiful, fluid writing style of Caroline Green is what pulls the reader into the story and gives them the best reading experience they could have.

Who do you trust when your whole life is a lie?

Its very difficult to fault Cracks! I started reading it, not knowing what exactly it was about or where it was going. Well, I was completely shocked when it took a turn that I was not expecting at all. Actually, I thought it was a bit crazy! At first, I was so shocked I didn't know if I liked where the story was going, but then I realised how unique the story was, that it had actually taken such a shocking turn and twisted the whole story around. I loved that the plot was completely unpredictable throughout the book! With all the twists and turns, it was hard to relax! Such a fast-paced novel, mysterious, thrilling, what more could you want?

Overall, I liked the characters. The main character, Cal, was very relatable, but I found him annoying sometimes and I thought his reactions were a bit unrealistic at times as well. If I found out that my whole life was a lie, I'd be hysterical! But that was only a small pet peeve for me. I really disliked Jax as a whole. I found him very irritating, and I just couldn't stand him! But I'm glad I had characters that I both like and disliked. Kyla was such an interesting character, in my opinion. She was mysterious, and intriguing. A nice set of characters overall.

"My whole world had been destroyed."

I don't want to give too much away, but I loved the chillingly realistic society Cracks was set in. Definitely one of the most realistic dystopian societies I've ever read. It wasn't a completely different world to what we live, it was a realistic, relatable society that I can see ourselves living in, in the future. And the author developed this frighteningly realistic society so effortlessly!

Caroline Green is one of my new favourite authors, because of how brilliant a writer she is. This is how a YA book should be written! Every line was meaningful, there were no unnecessary scenes or situations in the novel. I love Caroline Green's writing style, and how fluid and effortless it is. Everyone should read a book by this author if your a fan of YA.

Overall, Cracks is a brilliantly written YA book. A fantastically unique plot, a great set of contrasting characters, a chillingly realistic setting, and an overall exciting read! I read Hold Your Breath, by the same author, straight after and loved it even more! I can't wait to read her other novel, Dark Ride, too. Caroline Green is definitely an author to look out for!

Just a quick note: If your planning on reading Cracks, I recommend you don't read the Goodreads synopsis as I think it gives too much away and will ruin the overall experience of reading this book

MY REVIEW
I received a paperback of this book from the lovely people at Piccadilly Press, so Thankyou to them!
I think the bright cover does its job as it certainly grabs your initial attention. Then there's the byline of "Who do you trust when your whole life is a lie?" which holds your attention and starts off your curiosity of what the book is about. The boy on the cover give's us the impression of the boy running and possibly being chased and watched too.
Now to the book...The book is in three parts. I have to admit I was a bit confused by Part 1 as to what was happening to the boy. You are looking at his life through his own eyes of memories of incidents that have happened. I have to admit I was at times thinking What on earth am I reading here ? I decided to stick with the book as it had sort of got my curiosity going and I wanted to know more, What is the significance of the cracks? Is this boy nuts?
Onto Part 2, this is where we truly learn more about Cal. Or as much as we can learn when Cal doesn't really know who he is anymore, where he came from, or who is family is! It's in Part 2 that Cal escapes the repressive regime that has been keeping him in the induced coma and experimenting on him (I can say that much without revealing spoilers as it is stated in the blurb). So we are now following Cal and his confused thought as to who he really is, and where is his family etc. Cal has to wonder who he can trust in this newer world that has opened up to him quite suddenly. there's plenty of mystery, suspense and action in this book, there's even the odd bit of humor in it too. Cal has to decide whether to trust the local resistance that "rescued" him are they for real or do they just want him to perform their own tests on?
Now to Part Three, This is where everything has been building up to, the climax! The book definitely has you on the edge of your seat by now. you feel you want to know everything as much as Cal does.
Cal meets some street kids who he "hangs" about with for a while. Can't say too much and give away spoilers. Cal learns some of what has happened in the world whilst he was in his induced coma from the street gang.
Once again the tension is building to yet another climax, What will happen to Cal? Will he find what he is truly searching for? Will Cal ever be truly free?
You will have to read the book to find out, its well worth reading!
So did I enjoy this book? Y..es, it had its slower parts in part 1 where you are totally in the dark as to what is happening, which irritated me a little, but then, that made me want to stick with the book and read more to find out what happened. Would I recommend? Y..es to a patient reader. I would warn about the confusing Pt 1. Would I read more if this is a series? Yes. Would I read more by Caroline Green? Yes.

Review by Beth

I’m not a huge fan of dystopian fiction but as I really enjoyed Caroline Green’s Dark Ride, I though I’d give Cracks and its sequel Fragments a shot. Cracks begins and continues in the same fast-paced vein as Dark Ride. It’s impossible not to get pulled along for the ride whether you like it or not and whilst I didn’t have time to form a fully opinion of Cal I wanted to see where he went next in his journey.
Cal’s everyday life seems entirely normal, it seems exactly like anybody else’s with your average grievances and issues but nothing out of the ordinary. Until the cracks appear and reality becomes something entirely different. Cal’s REAL reality is much less believable and much more horrifying. The clinical feel of the beginning spreads into a wider dystopian world which only has flashes of what Cal knew before. He struggles with having no identity and terrorism is a constant threat that the government are seemingly battling against, although who is actually terrorising who is always in question.
As Cal tries to escape into this new world, away from the facility where he has been held for as long as he had been living his other life, he is conflicted and confused. Whilst running from place to place he wants to find his true identity whilst also remaining unseen. He crosses paths with other teenagers, Jax and Kyla, and begins to create an identity for himself through the people he gets to know. As he becomes himself more and more shocking realities come to light and it’s hard to say who’s right and who’s wrong in the near future, not quite what it should be Britain.
Cracks is tragic, there are several tragedies along the way and throughout there’s always a sense that whatever is around the next corner may not be something to look forward to. The sequel Fragments carries on from exactly where Cracks leaves off but we have the interesting technique of a change of protagonist and narrator.

So when the author offered me the chance to read Cracks, I was ecstatic! When it arrived in the post, I couldn't have been happier. I really wanted to read Caroline's work and was thrilled at the prospect of actually having a chance to read and review them!

So, Cracks follows a boy called Cal as he wakes up from his 12 year coma! Shocking right? In his mind he's been living those 12 years. Perfectly normal... that is until he starts seeing cracks everywhere and little things like his teacher repeating himself... and his mother saying 'He can't be waking up'... That's probably enough to make any kid go insane. When Cal is brought back to reality things go from bad to worse because he doesn't know who to trust...

Kyla and Jax were interesting in this story because I was unsure about them both (I guess I was thinking about Cal!) and I was pleased when it turned out Cal could trust them. I was rooting for Cal the entire way through the book and as you read through the novel there are parts that you speed up reading because of the action making the book impossible to put down (unless you're me and you're ill whilst trying to read it..).

The end of Part 2 and Part 3 made this book for me... It was the fastest part of the novel, the most interesting and the parts that are the 'nail-biting' sections. I loved them.

The cliffhanger at the end of the book annoyed me however because it meant the book was over and I wasn't exactly 100% happy about the book ending. Especially since I was really enjoying it!

Caroline Green created two entirely believable worlds. She created loveable, hated (but believable) characters. I can't find a fault with Cracks.. It really is an amazing book... This dystopian novel was another great one!

'Cracks' is a dystopian novel by British author Caroline Green. I was thrilled to be sent a copy to review as even though I haven't read anything by Green before I loved the sound of this book which is set in 2024 where society is very different from that which we live in now. The Securitat are now in charge and are determined to quash any resistance to the regime. The way they plan to do this is extreme and frightening and forms the basis for the experiences undergone by the main character Cal.

The story is split into three distinct sections. I'll admit that I initially found the first part rather puzzling but as the second part started everything became much clearer and I began to see how things were going to fit together. I would have preferred it if the introduction had been slightly less disjointed and at times I was confused about how this was going to have any link with the rest of the book but as Cal began to make sense of things, so did I.

I was fascinated by some of the ideas incorporated into the story and I enjoyed reading about the changes that society had undergone. There could perhaps have been a little more world-building and I would have liked to have seen some of the details discussed expanded on more, but on the whole it was depicted as being quite terrible and bleak for those living in it. I sincerely hope that 2024 does not turn out to be anything like Green describes here!

The tension builds throughout the book and I ended up enjoying the second half a lot more than the first. There are lots of challenges for Cal to face and plenty of ups and downs in store for him and the other characters. An enjoyable dystopian thriller, 'Cracks' is a roller coaster ride of thrills and spills with lots of surprises lying in wait for the reader.

A very interesting premise about a fourteen-year-old boy named Cal, who wakes up one day to discover the last twelve years of his life have been spent in a coma-induced dream, formed from fragments of his own memories and those of a brain-part donor. Cal can't trust anyone, and is determined to find out about his past.

The thriller element is really strong in this story, and I was glued to the page so much that I couldn't put it down; I read this book in one sitting.

Cal is instantly a really great character, I liked him from the very first word until the end, but that's where I feel the story starts to lack. The other characters aren't nearly as interesting and all of them have the same reaction to Cal's predicament - immediate pity, and then exposition about the world that they're in. It works for some characters but it does get a little repetitive - especially in the second half of the book.

The last scene did end fittingly, but still gives room for a future story - and I can't wait to find out what happens to Cal next in the sequel, Fragments.

I read this online last week and i thought it was absolutely brilliant. I was surprised when it changed after part 1 because i thought his donor boy's world was real and i hated dez. I felt sorry when Jax died as it wasn't his fault and i hated Cavendish as he trapped Cal.I thought that Nathan and Tom were burned alive in the van but i was glad they survived. I like the character of Cal as i could see him in my mind and how shocked he was. I really liked where you switched between real and coma world and between the different part of the story. I hope that you bring out another book just like that and i will defiently read it.

I read the book was Cracks by Caroline Green. The reason i chose to read this book was mostly because of the cover, title and blurb. The blurb really caught my interest in this book and was probably the biggest reason i started reading this book, it really hooked me. Cal (the main character) is my favourite because of what happens to him. His whole life was an illusion and he needs to find out his true identity. The whole time when i was reading this, i was completely addicted to this book, and was always excited to find out what happened next time i picked the book up. Overall was a really interesting book that was thrilling to read.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, it combines dystopia with thriller really well, both aspects of the plot feel very well balanced. For me the best dystopias are those that you can imagine happening, where you can see how our society could disintegrate to that point, and Cracks definitely ticks this box. This is a fast-paced read, I couldn’t hit the page forward button on my Kindle quickly enough at times. I didn’t always buy how Cal who’d missed the last 12 years and the changes in society accepted this new world, but that was my only niggle with the book.

'Cracks' has got to be one of the most confusing, exciting, and thrilling book I have ever read. Its a mix's between the reality life of Cal and his dream life. Having to go through challenges to find out the truth about his life after he wakes up from a coma of 12 years, I couldn't put the book down. It sucks you in as you read and the way it was written makes it seems as though you are the character it self. I recommend reading this book. Loved it!

What would it be like to have realisation dawn that the 'life" you thought you'd lead for the last 12 years was just inside your head and that you weren't the person you thought you were? This is what happens to Cal when he realises he has been kept in a chemically controlled coma. The world he wakes up into is a very scary one indeed but it is disconcertingly believable. I enjoyed Cracks and read it in one sitting , late into the night because the fast pace kept me hooked.

I read this book as part of the Hampshire Book Awards and I have to say that so far it is my favourite of the 6 contenders. From the moment that I opened the book I couldn't put it down and I found that the characters were well rounded the dialogue believable and the plot intriguing... More of the same please

Pretty good overall - I think the author really captured the voice of a boy in his early teens, and the plotting and world building was great (if a tad unbelievable at times), but it really fell apart for me at the end. Io avoid spoilers I won't say anything detailed, only that I found it all to easy - and felt the author missed adding another layer that would have really elevated this book.

OPening as a typical 'teenage angst' story this rapidly disintegrates into a dystopian sci-fi where cal wakes out of a coma into a world full of people who he doesn't know and cannot know who to trust.

The writing style in this book really annoyed me. I understand that this book is aimed at younger readers but it felt like the writing was talking down to its readers. I couldn't engage with the story due to the writing. I didn't like this story but perhaps it's better suited for younger readers.
