Writing Poetry combines an accessible introduction to the essential elements of the craft, with a critical awareness of its underpinnings. The authors argue that separating the making of poems from critical thinking about them is a false divide and encourage students to become accomplished critics and active readers of poetic texts.
Extremely informative piece that provided method for the creative madness that can be poetry. An extremely insightful guide not only for writing, but understanding the creative landscape of poetry.
DNF. This is a good guidebook for new poetry writers. The collection has more theoretical information about writing poetry than exercises, so it might be helpful for those who don't have a lot of experience or knowledge about history. I recommend reading this in combination with Stephen Guppy's Writing and Workshopping Poetry: A Constructive Introduction.
Read in college & reread as a secondary Ed English teacher - great insight & info on how to get students writing poetry & how to leave their preconceptions of the form behind. Excellent exercises to use in the classroom ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
This is not a craft book for everyone, as it uses student poetry examples and delves into theory, but I really loved it. I loved the suggestions for drafting.
I liked this book. I think that it should be something we all take into account when we teach on the secondary level. We need more creativity in secondary education.
