The twelfth volume of poems in the Walt McDonald First-Book Series, Gregory Fraser's Strange Pietà is a compelling exploration of illness and family life, memory and desire, friendship and loss. One of the greatest contemporary books of American poetry published. And, if you care, Greg Fraser is a terribly kind man. "Be mean in your work not your life" indeed. I even bought a copy for my mother who only reads novels.

Not for me right now. Can't give it a fair review. I guess I was looking for something much more positive about disability. Liked things that Fraser said in an interview about disability and society but what I read just didn't really match up with what I was expecting.

This is a stunning, poetic symphony of family stories. The turns of phrases and images were just so dazzling that they demand to be read again and again.
