Shrinking Violet #1

Shrinking Violet

Rate this book
Violet is normal-sized one minute and pocket-sized the next! It's the BIGGEST day in Violet's life. All she has ever wanted to do is ride Plunger, the scariest roller coaster around. And today she is finally TALL enough. 1.4 meters to be exact. But just as Violet is about to climb into one of Plunger's carriages, something totally crazy happens. Violet shrinks! She is suddenly as small as a fish finger. Although Violet doesn't stay little for long, her chances of ever riding Plunger are ruined. She never wants to shrink again... But then Granny is accused of stealing, and tiny Violet might just be the only one who can catch the thief.

A funny little novel for children, packed with important lessons. For example, Violet's tales of being the younger sibling and sharing with her difficult older sister, being misunderstood and learning to communicate, overcoming challenges and pursuing justice. Not a read-over-and-over-again kind of novel but still entertaining.

This was ok. I just didn't really get into any off the characters, and the plot didn't have much meat to it. We got the book in a grab bag from the school's Books for Keeps program, and it's been my least favorite so far. Probably won't bother with the sequels unless L picks them herself.

I am so happy that I borrowed this book as it was really good and I enjoyed it. It made my journey to Knebworth Park seem very short indeed.

I read this with my class at school. They found it a bit boring to be honest. Not too well written and a bit slow.

Violet has finally grown big enough to be able to ride on the scary Plunger at her local theme park. She persuades her parents to take her there, but just as they are about to get on the ride, she starts to shrink in a style reminiscent of Mrs Pepperpot, one of my childhood favourite series.

This book is full of action - first Violet's attempts to stay alive in a busy park when she is only a few inches tall, and then her wish to prove her grandmother innocent of a series of burglaries. She's a likeable child, and most of the book is written from her perspective. She has a very special friendship with her grandmother which is strengthened during this book. The writing is fast-paced without being exhausting, and there are even a few ethical issues that might lead to useful discussion. Like Mrs Pepperpot, the story is set in the real world with just the one strange fantasy element, and some amusingly caricatured people.

Not easy to read aloud since there are some large capitalised words in strange fonts, but perfect for a newly confident reader of about six or above.

Violet Potts is finally tall enough to ride the PLUNGER! ride at the local theme park. She's been waiting her whole entire life just to ride. Then, while she was in the queue, when she least expected it, she started shrinking. Smaller and smaller... AND she also has to stop a thief framing her Gran for burglary, using her extra small powers to help her Gran, also named Violet...

Some wonderful illustrations here, with a bonkers idea and silly characters. Violet is very likeable, her likeability shining through as she saves the day. Well written and well thought. What a crazy book which children aged between 8 - 12 will really enjoy.

I have read this book to my class of 6-7 year olds and I must say a HUGE thank you to the author for this book has sparked off in my class a joy of books and reading. The children are all seen reading different books in the series, chatting and laughing over the stories. Boy and girls; they both love the exploits of Shrinking Violet. So thank you to the author from a very happy teacher who now has a class of children who LOVE books!
