Short Synopsis: Get lost in a world filled with monsters, ghosts, and supernatural hunters, all teaming up to give you one crazy night at the prom.
My Thoughts: A fun, entertaining read, with different, unique stories, will leave you curious for more.
Prom Dates To Die For takes you on a wild adventure, filled with creepy monsters, ranging from a dark angel, sucking souls from humans, to a prom queen seeking revenge and justice, to even a heroine who gets more than she bargained for on her eighteenth birthday. Prom Dates To Die For, gives readers the night of their lives, with a mix of paranormal world, that readers will be sure to sink their teeth into.
I usually don't review anthologies, as it's usually pretty tough to give a review of each individual story involved. But this novel overall, was a fun, cute, entertaining read about the different unique stories about prom. My favorite story was Darkness Becomes Him by Kelly Parra, two hunters searching for an angel gone bad, sucking the souls of humans at prom, and during the process, they find out that they have feelings for each other. I really enjoyed this first novel, and wished that it had developed into a little more lengthy novel. Another interesting story was Every Breath You Take by Lena Brown, as readers discover a girl who buys a dress for prom, is suddenly a victim of possession, determined to right a wrong from the past. All these stories that are centered around the theme of prom have an easy flow, with characters who leave the readers wanting more of the paranormal world. I loved how each story was filled with something different, but also had a hint of romance involved as well. Each story will suck the reader into an out of this world experience.
Prom Dates to Die For is a collection of paranormal, prom-themed short stories by YA authors Lena Brown, Heather Dearly, Kelly Parra, Jenny Peterson, and Aaron Smith. Each story features a different kind of paranormal, but all the stories compliment each other very well.
My favorite story was definitely the third story, "Every Breath You Take" by Lena Brown. I thought it was the most developed of the stories and it was the one that held my interest the most. Charlie is planning to attend prom like any normal high school girl, but it turns out her vintage prom dress is haunted by the dress's previous owner... and that owner is looking for revenge! I loved this story! It was spooky and wove all the characters together to the same tragic event.
The first story, "Darkness Becomes Him" by Kelly Parra, was my least favorite. It was the shortest of five stories and the least developed. It did feature a lot of action, though, involving a dark angel sucking souls, so that was fun. It was certainly an example of how not to spend your prom!
I give this book four stars! I really enjoyed all the stories except for the first one and I think this book would be the perfect read for any high school junior or senior winding down on the school year and gearing up for prom!
I really liked this anthology. It was the perfect length and was filled with really good stories. My order for most liked to least liked would be 1. Darkness Become Him by Kelly Parra, 2. Tonight, You're Mine by Jenny Peterson, 3. Every Breath You Take By Lena Brown, 4. A Kiss on the Threshold by Aaron Smith, and 5. The Bone Flower by Heather Dearly. Really glad i had the opportunity to read this, because it was a great little break from reading full length novels. Definitely worth a read =D
The anthology begins with “Darkness Becomes Him” by Kelly Parra, which is probably the shortest and the weakest tale. The concept was great, but because the story was so brief there was little time for readers to get to know or connect with the characters. The onus of interesting the readers was then left mostly on the action…and there was a lot of action! Personally, I think this story could be an exciting climatic scene in a novel, and I would like to see what Parra can do writing a longer work.
Next is “The Bone Flower” by Heater Dearly. This story was very nicely imagined and had a few sentences that made me stop and think for a moment. Some of it is initially confusing, but everything becomes clear in the end. It was both beautiful and a little depressing.
“Every Breath You Take” by Lena Brown, on the other hand, is a little crazy and a little creepy. It was also confusing at points, and I am not sure every detail made complete sense by the end (mainly in terms of some of the characters’ reactions to events.) Nonetheless, the story is very well-developed and had a fascinating premise. It may be the longest story.
“A Kiss at the Threshold by Aaron Smith also presents a very interesting concept, and it has my favorite protagonist (also the only leading male!). The dialogue occasionally comes across as slightly stilted, but perhaps that is due to character traits. The focus is mainly on the plot, however, which is gripping. I would like to know more about how exactly the powers that defeat the villains work.
The last tale is “Tonight, You’re Mine” by Jenny Peterson which was also intriguing. It incorporates some surprises and a bit of humor, which makes it a refreshing contribution to an anthology about proms gone wrong!
Overall, Prom Dates to Die For is a fun, light read with a great variety of stories. Readers looking for bite-sized stories about prom or paranormal adventures will enjoy it.
Recently, I've had the opportunity to read short stories, really good ones I might add. I read On The Day I Died, written by Candace Fleming. It was an interesting book, an one of the reason was that it uses a character as a listener. Through this character, the author channels the individual stories to the reader. Prom Dates To Die For has an other approach.
Prom Dates To Die For is an anthology of YA stories that uses a rite of passage familiar to all of us as a setting: The Prom. These stories reminded me of the Twilight Zone series. Every story has its own character and showcases a great deal of individuality from the authors. Inside the pages of this anthology we find stories from the unknown: sci-fi, ghost stories, possessions, paranormal; well something for every paranormal genre reader.
The anthology is formed by a compilation of five stories where kids find themselves at some point at a Prom. I will mention things I enjoyed the most on my favorite short stories on this book. In Darkness Becomes Him (author Kelly Parra) we found an engaging and easy to read story where we find the paranormal and love. I would like to read more about her characters and I do think that this short story could be a beginning for a really interesting book.
Every Breath You Take (Lena Brown) was my preferred tale. It has a sweet simple ending. Also, it has strong elements that could be easily translated onto the big screen. It reminds me of those great 80's movies we still watch because they are so good that now are must-see classics.
About the book: The idea to create this compilation behind a concept like the Prom presented an opportunity to these authors for the reinvention of a concept. Even the cover evokes the idea of prom on a dark mysterious setting. I invite all of you to read Prom Date To Die For. Can't miss it!

Proms if you live in the States, are seen as a rite of passage for all high school students, in New Zealand , we do have the school balls but it isn't really seen as such a big deal as the Prom as there is no crowning Queens and Kings, no big committees and no lead-ups. Though in the case of this Paranormal/Supernatural Anthology it seems that this Prom contains Dates that are to Die for and literally in the case of some of the short stories. In terms of Anthologies, I quite liked this one as it was a quick read and the stories are short and straight to the point , which some readers may view as underdeveloped tales but for me it was perfect. We have a story about two teen Supernatural Hunters that are hired to save the school's student body from being sucked soulless as demons possess one of the students , A death reaper discovers the reason she is stuck on earth and meets the one person who can help her move to the afterlife , A student buys a vintage dress from the op-shop only to discover it is possessed and turns her into a prom queen who wants revenge on those who killed her - this was my favourite story as it reminded me of the movie "Urban Legend #3 - Bloody Mary , a musician called to save his classmate from death and Rachel who has discovered that when she turns 18 she becomes a Demon Hunter and it seems that a demon wants to kill her boyfriend on Prom Night. This is the perfect read for all those who are fans of Short Stories and have previously enjoyed the books "Kisses from Hell" and "Prom Dates from Hell" that featured stories from Melissa Marr and PC Cast.
I love short stories for so many reasons. For one, they are short and to the point so you don't get all of the filler and boring parts that most books have. And it's a really short read if you are just looking to fill a small amount of time or you can read a collection of stories like in 'Prom Dates to Die for' to fill more time. They are really great for any situation. The only thing that I don't like is that the stories are over far too fast! For the short stories in 'Prom Dates to Die for,' I wish they hadn't ended so quickly because I want to read more. It's been a few days now since I read the book and I still want to be able to read more from each story but I can't!
'Prom Dates to Die For' has so many great things in it. It's packed full of Paranormal, proms, dates, dresses, and everything else that you would love in a story! The short stories in the book are Darkness Becomes Him by Kelly Paara, The Bone Flower by Heather Dearly, Every Breath You Take by Lena Brown, A Kiss at the Threshold by Aaron Smith, and Tonight, You're Mine by Jenny Peterson. These are five amazing stories by five equally amazing authors!
You definitely don't want to miss your chance to read 'Prom Dates to Die For.' It's a great collection of paranormal prom stories that are literally to die for! I was fortunate enough to get the chance to read and review these five incredible stories and I think they are completely worth reading!
I have a great book full of YA paranormal stories to review today. Prom Dates To Die For, from Buzz Books, is a collection of stories from several authors including, Lena Brown, Heather Dearly, Kelly Parra, Jenny Peterson and Aaron Smith. Want my review copy? Leave a comment with your email telling me either your best or worst prom memory (keep it PG).
The Stories- Here’s to a night you will never forget- your prom night! Go to prom with supernatural hunters hired to save a prom date from a soul eating demon. Go on a date with the Grim Reaper, who can not remember who she really is. Get possessed by a dead prom queen seeking revenge, or save your classmates from creatures from another dimension. And lastly, have your birthday on prom night, and experience your family's secret legacy.
My Thoughts- Sometimes I just need a quick easy read to fill in the time, and this book does just that. I liked all the stories. They have just the right touch of fun and paranormal to make things interesting. The two stories I took a shine to, just happened to be the first and last ones, murphy’s law, right? But the one’s in between are worth the read. And really, they are true short stories, with a beginning, middle and end. Something I really needed instead of the longer books I’ve been reading that just end with a to be continued…
When Buzz Books publisher contacted me to ask if I was interested in reviewing a YA Anthology and Paranormal Romance centering around prom? Hell yeah! I jumped at the chance! Prom and paranormal? Umm perfect combination!
I didn't really know what to expect so I went into this not knowing a thing. I did have quite a number of problems about it, but overall it was an enjoyable read.
Because it's a short anthology, each story couldn't develop the characters very well, and I was left confused by ALL of the five plots since they don't give you that much story background. So that kinda let me down a bit, even though I knew beforehand that this is an anthology.
Highly recommended to people who love anthologies is a must, short stories, and paranormal and prom!
