Why, oh WHY, is this just a novella!!! When you have something this awesome, rock on!!!! And on and on and on!
Lola is your everyday misfit, hellbent on pushing the limit, totally acting out over her parents' divorce and her father's drunkenness. She's currently trying to steal a car, dragging her whiny, unmanly best friend Travis along for the felony, when they hear a horrible shriek within the house. Curious, and a little too reckless, Lola knocks on the door, but it's not the owner that answers, but a beefy-looking vampire. Travis is compelled to enter the house, but not Lola. Yep...you guessed it - Run, Lola, Run!
But there's not a lot of places to run. Everywhere she goes people are screaming, people are running, people are dying. She's determined to get home to her father, then rescue Travis, but it's a long way. And running into a female vampire that wants to make Lola her new plaything isn't getting her there any faster. Luckily the vamp is distracted by a vamp that outranks her, but she doesn't leave before biting Lola. It's not until Lola meets the hunky, weapon-toting Maximus that she learns the female vamp can now track Lola. Well...that sucks. But she's still determined to find her father, rescue her best friend and escape the hellhole her town has now become. But dodging loose vampires proves hard enough. How will she ever get away with a vamp chasing her down that's determined to make Lola her personal plaything?
This novella is all types of awesome. It's just a little over a hundred pages, and with action from beginning to end, you're gonna fly through this in one sitting, white knuckles and all. Best part of all? It's only 99 cents and worth so much more! Pick it up now!

This was such a fun and thrilling novel. I liked the humor, the bonds of friendship between Lola and Travis, and of course, plenty of action with fighting evil creatures of the night. Lola was a head strong character, and I really liked that about her. She can take charge of a major situation and kick some serious butt as well.
I adored Travis and the friendship he had with Lola. He follows the rules and tends to think things threw before doing something unlike Lola who can be the complete opposite. But what stuck out for me was their loyalty to each other. Then there is the character Maximus, who was intriguing yet still a mystery. Mmm.. There is a cliffhanger ending alright and it leaves me with a few burning questions, but there is a sequel coming and I can't wait for that.

Being a novelette, this is a very fast read, which I think is alright but I was hoping for more. I think with the idea of the author herself, she can make a full-blown novel out of the story. She could have built up some of her characters more and not just thrown them in the story and make them stand in there. There are some holes in the story that is not explained well because of the shortness of each chapter and the book itself. This is really a great plot and idea but it lacks the length and story build up I was expecting.
Next is the characters itself, Lola, for me, is not your average teen. Well if average for you is a I-will-brake-every-rule-that-I-can is normal for you. She’s the type who does everything for fun. And I’m her parent I might suffer a thousand heart attacks at what she was doing. Even in the time, she discovered those creatures; she’s still hold on to her character. Stubborn as a mule and irritating to a point, I just want to shake her. I don’t hate her, actually I kind of like her in a weird kind of love. Ok, that’s confusing but for some odd reason I like her rule-breaking streak. But I hate how she won’t listen to herself and how she does a lot of things too impulsively. I feel like she should have chosen some things better. Well, that’s Lola for you.
Travis, on the other hand, is the geek friend of the rule breaker. He’s the other half of Lola. They are the weird Duo. He’s actually the person; I want the author to build up in the story. Somewhere, in the story, if you will be reading this, you’ll find a part where you would ask yourself, what the heck happened? I was waiting for something to be explained or even to be shown, I was really disappointed because nothing happened. And that seriously kind of turned me down, I was even creating my own hypothesis but it did not happen. Although, maybe it would happen in the next book, we’ll never know.
Her Dad, which has no name, well he also lacked build up. All I know he’s a drunkard minus the violence and all those things. And he’s your regular average dad still minus the alcohol. I feel there are still things we need to know about him that I want to find out. And I still don’t know what happened to him at the end of the book, I think the author would put it in the next book.
Maximus, the mysterious stranger out of nowhere (according to the author), is the hot guy needed to create a very good story. I actually like Maximus with all his tight-lipped secrets and all those things he doesn’t want to say. For me, he and Lola just fit. They irked each other so many times but yet somehow I felt like they need each other in the story. I really want to know more about him. And something in the end of the novelette where you would actually feel surprise but not so much. I don’t want to reveal too much about him but I have my hunch on what he really is but I never expected the end of the story. And now I’m theorizing on what will happen next. I just feel like…
But I won’t tell you because I want you to read this novelette and find it out yourself. I can’t wait to read the next one and hopefully find answers in a lot of loopholes in the story. Also, hopefully some of my theory is correct.

Lola is pretty badbutt (sorry if that sounds ridiculous, but I try not to swear) whether she's hijacking a car or battling an angry horde of blood-thirsty apocalyptic vampires. Probably more so in the latter.

Eaton delivers a story with a lot of heart that keeps your blood pumping and racing (quite literally). Lola is a character you want to gobble up with every turn of the page, as well as the rest of her fugitive band, which includes her 'sometimes sober father', her best friend, Travis, and the handsome, mysterious stranger Maximus (of course!) who is particularly yummy. As the paranormal faze glides past us, and the dystopian one slides in, Eaton crafts an especially colorful story combining both-and ends up with a creation that's uproariously funny and fresh.
Though a bit predictable, and sadly short, the end wraps the plot up with a nice little bow tie and leaves room for a lot more exploration. Even though it's very easy to guess what happens at the end, Eaton shows a depth of writing that's not just reserved for plot twists, and gives Pitch a voice that I am craving more of.
I only hope I don't get eaten by a vampire before I manage to buy the next one.

The author managed to deliver a very interesting storyline in a world where most dystopian books looks similar. I have to say that Lola’s characters reminded me a lot of Faith (in BTVS). Honestly it’s almost a good thing that her dad is a drunk of he would have died a thousand dead with everything she did. I’m pretty sure I would have smacked her a couple of times! Seriously you can be sure that this girl will do EVERYTHING she’s not supposing to. She’s reckless and head strong, even when she have to face the drinkers (it’s almost a miracle she didn’t get killed at some point). I also enjoyed the dark and twisted humor who was very present in the book (what can I say, I’m a BTVS fan!)
Maximus the handsome and lonesome stranger was very well written and all the mystery surrounding him makes me curious to learn more about him! I also loved Travis, her geeky but courageous and loyal friend. He reminded me a lot of Simon in TMI series!
I won’t lie and say that it wasn’t predictable sometimes and that some plot and twist were stretched a little bit but overall it was a really great novella and the ending got me at the edge of my seat and I’m definitely looking forward to read what’s gonna happens!

Lola is not your typical heroine. Lola isn't even your typical YA read. She is a young girl fighting to make her own way with an absentee mother, a drunken father, and town full of vampires.
Lola does have her best friend Travis, who is sticking by her side through sick and sin. Which in this case includes stealing cars and crashing in abandoned hotels.
I like reading about Lola and her uncanny ability to stay alive using sarcasm and rhetoric. She is a refreshing anti-hero of sorts really. She is trying to really do anything, it's all coming to her naturally. I would say that her ability to speak through the space is a little off putting at first. I thought she was revealing too much of the story- come to find out it was just to throw you off the big reveal at the end!
If you can't stand a cliff hanger don't read this one!
I do wish that I hadn't read the prologue. After reading through the story I do feel that it gave too much away. But we had to see that coming.... didn't we?

The only problem I had with this novella, was that, that it was a novella, TOO SHORT! I wanted MOOOAR!! D:
There were some editing issues here and there, not enough to take out from the experience. I just skipped right over them.
Awesome start for a series, loved Lola! she was gutsy, sarcastic, smart, but still down to earth. Even though her life kinda sucked she doesn't overly whine about it. Loved the interactions between Lola and Travis and Lola and Maximus. It was obvious there was something up with Maximus, being all mysterious and bad-ass like that. I still don't fully trust Travis, something is going on there. That ending just killed me! I NEED to know what happened with Maximus! I refuse to believe he would go down like that.
There was lots of action, but with a bit of gore, which I loved! with just a hint of romance and some laugh out loud moments. In short, I REALLY loved this novella!

This novella was definitely not long enough for my liking! But I guess that's why it's a novella and not a novel right?
From what I've gathered of the plot of this little series I do quite like it. The whole 'vampires slaughter millions' thing isn't new or anything, but I like the way that it's put together in this story. These 'Drinkers', as they call themselves, seem to be a bit more ruthless than the ones that you see in other stories and I do like that about them.
As always I love Eaton's writing I just wish there was more in this one. I feel like I didn't really get to know the characters very well this time around. There was a lot about them but for some reason I just didn't feel connected to them as I have with characters from her other novella's.
All in all, I really liked the story and I'm going to sit here and wait very impatiently for the next one to come out!

HOTT-DAMN! I am in love!! I had hit a slump and kept starting to read books but could not deal with the weak girls so I'd stop and start a different one. I had entered to win Pitch in a contest so decided to download a sample. Well, once I started it there was no stopping. The same day I entered the contest I ended up buying it, lol. Damn it was worth it! The mc is one kick ass chick and I'm eager for the next taste:-)

Good book, loved Lola - what a great character the author has created her infantile attraction to Maximus the only blot on her character . Travis did not move the needle one way or the other. Hated Maximus, his name, his character, everything about him, I would rather Lola have a relationship with Angelique!

Finally! Scary vampires! It’s been a while since I read a book about vampires. These days, they aren’t too popular a subject in YA and that’s probably due to the oversaturation that came just after Twilight. So color me refreshed when I discovered A Night Without Stars, the first vampire YA I’ve seen in a long time that shows these suckers as the villains they’re supposed to be.
My favorite part about this novel was the main character, Lola Sanchez. She’s plucky and sarcastic and carries inside her a boatload of seething, unpredictable anger. She’s the bad girl of Revere, PA, and when we first get to meet her, she’s readying herself to hotwire a car. And when everything goes to shit, she maintains that badass attitude, which I loved so much. I feel like a lot of the books I read are about timid, shy girls, but not this time. Lola is a fighter, no just because she has to be, but because she always has been. Because she can.
Lola’s relationship with her dorky best friend Travis is endearing. They’re an unlikely match and yet they somehow make perfect sense when they’re together. I also thought her relationship with her father was one that was easy to relate to and one that isn’t explored very much, I don’t think. Her father is an alcoholic, and she’s very, very pissed about it. But the author did a wonderful job of showing just how hard it is to love an addict.
Now, A Night Without Stars obviously wasn’t a big Kumbaya-talk-about-your-feelings-over-a-campfire kind of book. There was a LOT of violence and some gore and a ton of action and blood. Lola’s entire hometown is completely slaughtered over the course of two days and the wreckage, including the bodies, is left on display in the streets. This is not a quiet novel. It kind of punches you in the face and never lets you have any doubt about how much shit Lola and her loved ones are caught up in.
There are some things I don’t quite understand just yet, though. I don’t totally understand the vampires’ endgame, why they picked this particular small town, or what they plan to do after they’ve killed all the humans in the world, which is obviously their plan. I also don’t understand the vamps’ powers. At one point, Lola is bitten and it gives her some supernatural healing capabilities and it also means the vampire who bit her can track her. I find that weird, only because most vampire stories I’ve seen have it the other way around – if a human ingests the vampire’s blood, then all that weird stuff happens. I’d also like to know what’s up with Maximus, but I guess all my questions will be answered in the sequel.
The writing style was okay – it was fast paced and Lola didn’t tend to carry on too much inside her own head. I did find some problems, though, especially in the last 50 pages of the book. There were quite a few spelling and grammar issues. It wasn’t bad enough to take me out of the story entirely, but I do wish they weren’t there.
A Night Without Stars does end on one fucked up cliffhanger, and I can tell you that I will definitely be reading the sequel. There are some questions I definitely need answered and I am anxious to find out what’s in store for Lola and how she manages to get herself out of this horrible situation.
My favorite part about this novel was the main character, Lola Sanchez. She’s plucky and sarcastic and carries inside her a boatload of seething, unpredictable anger. She’s the bad girl of Revere, PA, and when we first get to meet her, she’s readying herself to hotwire a car. And when everything goes to shit, she maintains that badass attitude, which I loved so much. I feel like a lot of the books I read are about timid, shy girls, but not this time. Lola is a fighter, no just because she has to be, but because she always has been. Because she can.
Lola’s relationship with her dorky best friend Travis is endearing. They’re an unlikely match and yet they somehow make perfect sense when they’re together. I also thought her relationship with her father was one that was easy to relate to and one that isn’t explored very much, I don’t think. Her father is an alcoholic, and she’s very, very pissed about it. But the author did a wonderful job of showing just how hard it is to love an addict.
Now, A Night Without Stars obviously wasn’t a big Kumbaya-talk-about-your-feelings-over-a-campfire kind of book. There was a LOT of violence and some gore and a ton of action and blood. Lola’s entire hometown is completely slaughtered over the course of two days and the wreckage, including the bodies, is left on display in the streets. This is not a quiet novel. It kind of punches you in the face and never lets you have any doubt about how much shit Lola and her loved ones are caught up in.

Lola feels reckless and decides that she will break into and hot-wire a car. But what she does not expect is that she would hear someone screaming and go to investigate, just to encounter a strange man with metal teeth. As her world slowly starts falling apart one strange encounter at a time, Lola realizes that something is very wrong. How is one reckless girl supposed to save herself, not to mention others, in a world that is suddenly dangerous and scary?
I can honestly say that I have never read a book quite like this before and I enjoyed the ride. This was a subtle type of scary, where is slowly built as the book progressed until it was right in your face and you could not help but be surprised. I liked the pacing of the book the best, with the reader dropped into the book with Lola, both unsuspecting as to what will happen. The vampires used here were unlike any vampire I have read about before, maybe closer to the vampires from the movie 40 Days of Nights (actually the whole book felt like a teen version of that movie but with snark and some humor), who just want to go out and destroy everything, with their own hierarchy where man is at the very bottom. The book was full of murder, mayhem, gore and a lot of quirky attitude and snark, just the way I like it.
Lola was an interesting character. She acts out, even though she knows why she acts act just as well as a therapist would, but it doesn’t stop her. As she puts it, “because she can”. At times I wanted to hug her (aka protect her) from accepting her lack of a future, and the weight of her life dragging her down. Despite the scary challenges, Lola staid very positive about her survival during the apocalypse (as she called it). I love the fact she thanked Hollywood for preparing her for how to deal with all the gore and violence, which is too true for films today. She made commentary that was morbid yet so very honest, at time it surprised a laugh out of me at the most inappropriate of times (“…at least he died of natural causes. Sort of.”). She was so strong and surprisingly capable (at least of handling the emotional practical issues), I rooted her on.
I don’t think I will ever think of calling 911 the same, which was probably the freakiest part of the book. The ending was awful and such a cliff hanger, and I did not know that this was the first in a series until after the story ended, which means that I need the next book asap.

Okay, this book change the way I see vampire novels! I'm not a big fan of vamp-books (except for Richelle Mead books) because of all the cliche' that's going on in there but oh wow, A Night Without Stars just change my mind! This is my kind of vampire book, I love the concept, I love the story world and most of all, I love the main character Lola.
Lola's character is so kickass and badass, also add smart mouthed that there are times when I think that she's breaking the fourth wall and talking to the readers because she has a strong voice. I love how she isn't your usual human girl/ damsel in distress in most vampire novels, the girl seriously know how to take care of herself. At some point, Lola and her bff Travis reminds me a lot of myself and my best friend, who is also a guy, when it comes to the recklessness and adrenaline junkie factor. There are times when I feel bad for her especially in her family history but proud of her at the same time because she got through it all. I also liked the fact that the author didn't throw any romance and tried to make it work in the span of three days (book's timeline) even though the chemistry between Lola and Maximus is there, I'm glad to know that Lola assumed it was just her teenage hormones instead of love because that would be bleh.
I love the book! Wow, I can't believe I said that to a vampire book that isn't in the Vampire Academy world. There are a lot of vampire books in the YA literature these days that makes its all seemed like it has the same plot line that's why I'm so glad to know that A Night Without Stars exists. A new shade to throw to all those vamp-novels! Oh, that cliff hanger! Gosh I need the second book now! I can't believe it isn't out yet, but we'll watch out for that. And if you haven't read this book yet, I suggest you do because the thrill that you'll experience while reading the book is oh so awesome.

Early on in this book, the narrator (Lola) tells us that this is not a story with a happy ending. How refreshing to find that she wasn't kidding!
I've read a number of books with the whole "strap in, things are terribad and about to go downhill from here" disclaimer by the narrator in the beginning. Most of the time, those stories don't deliver. There is a resolution, or something, somewhere, somehow, goes right in the end. There may be losses, but there is a sense of closure, or the good guys do something to turn the tide of evil, blah blah blah.
Not so with A Night Without Stars.
This is a well written story, but if you read it, expect to have your jaw drop and your feelings stomped on. Expect pain and heartache and things to go horribly wrong. Expect cold, heartless characters and situations. Expect an ending where nobody wins.
I'll admit, I didn't care for the heroine at first. Lola is whiny, annoyingly bratty, and very much "it's all about me" even when it isn't. It was refreshing when she actually realized that at one point. Her tone may have continued to be snarky and that of an overly hormonal teenager, but she grows on you and becomes less grating/abrasive once the vampires come out to play.
There are a few niggling bits that bothered me, but if you turn your brain off and don't nitpick the details, this is a gripping story worth a read if you're into dark, gritty, disturbing tales. If the author wrote another story featuring Lola picking up where she left off in this book, I would pick it up in a heartbeat.

I kept seeing this book roll through my Goodreads feed and show up in my email. Finally, I decided that if it kept showing up, it must be a sign that I had to read it.
The story follows Lola, a troubled teen, who seeks attention by doing dangerous and illegal things. One night she is thrown in the path of a vampire and strange things start happening. The whole town goes dark and the sounds of screams from the dying can be heard. Lola and her best friend and father try to escape the city, but can't. When the best friend is captured by a sadistic vampire, Lola makes the ultimate sacrifice to get him back.
Jillian Eaton has created a mysterious world where vampires don't hide anymore. When Lola takes on the sadistic female vampire, I wanted to jump up and down and scream "You go girl." Who takes on a vampire without the normal wooden stake or garlic necklace. This chic is bad ass.
The vampire lore is what you would think. They don't go out in the sunlight, they have super healing powers, and they can only be killed in a special way. No sparkle to these blood suckers.
The only part of the story where it kind of fell apart for me, was when Lola's group tries to leave the city. Without giving a lot away, apparently, there is only one way out of that side of the city and its blocked, so they don't even try to leave after that. It seems a little flimsy to me.
With that being my only down side. I gave this read three stars and would recommend it to anyone who loves urban fantasy, paranormal and vampires.

I wasn't sure about this book at first. In the book world saturated with vampire books, I didn't find much that made this book stand out. But, since it was short I kept reading. I am so glad that I did!
I think the biggest thumbs up for this book is Lola. She's a sassy lead female character. She doesn't even bat an eye when she uses that against a vampire who is bent on killing her. I think it saved her life. She's fiercely loyal to her best friend and her father. It may have been a lack of judgement to leave Travis at that house at first but I admired the fact that she went back for him. I liked that she didn't trust Maximus. It ok to admit you might be attracted to him, but I never felt it was an instant connection.
There were a couple things about this book that stood out for me. First, I thought it was interesting that Lola was bitten but it didn't turn her. She could be tracked because of it though. I think the drove the vampire crazy because Lola always seemed to outsmart her. Second, I like the reasoning behind the complete attack on the town. It intrigues me and makes me think there's a lot more to the story.

3.5 - 4 Stars in my Sky!
I have to admit I wasn't expecting to like Lola. BUT although she's rash, kinda foolhardy and definitely abrupt, I did like her. Lola's antics and dark tone made me smile in a cynical, Marvin, the Paranoid Android kinda way.
Lola definitely finds more then she bargained for when an act of teenage rebellion leads to an unsettling discovery and a whole heap of trouble. Not only is Lola facing an unhelpful Dad but also a town full of homicidal vampires. So of course she drags her studious long suffering best friend, Travis along for the ride.
Lola is snarky but in an entertaining kinda way. She seems to continuously find herself in terrifying and dramatic situations, but she's a survivor who just won't quit.
I liked Maximus who constantly reminded me of a certain character from a well know alien invasion series (too spoilery to name). Who doesn't like a handsome stranger?
The story is short and action packed but be warned there is a cliffy...!

I am totally not a fan of historical romance, in fact when my Kindle suggested to me this book I started some researches about the author and I was really skeptical.
But reviews were so enthusiastic I decided to give it a try and I'm really happy about my decision.
The main character is a feisty teenager who comes from the very wrong side of the town: she has a drunk father she loves to death and she's facing the fact her Mom and older sister decided to drop her to her fate and not even return her calls and messages.
And here's where the end of the world starts.
Death, gore, real vampires with the focused goal of kill, maim, torture and drink from their terrified cattle. No glittering melanchonic and loving creatures with predilection for shy Mary Janes here. I totally fell in love with the novel, it's raw and Lola is a refreshing heroine with a snarky and brave attitude. I love her!
I want to read the second book so badly!

Another free ebook that I downloaded forever ago but I'm just getting around to reading. If you are an amazon prime member, you can still read this book for free. Everyone else, it's .99.
This book was somewhat entertaining. It saved itself by being blessedly short. But it's length was also its curse as many things go completely unexplained. You just have to roll with it and pretend like those gaping plot holes don't matter.
It's amazing how some characters can simultaneously be smart and incredibly stupid. That's the best description of our heroine, Lola. Then there is her wimpy/trusty sidekick named Travis, her drunk and completely useless father and a love interest who keeps showing up out of nowhere to save her butt. From the cover, you would think Lola is some sort of badass. Think again. She's the poster child for dumb luck.

This book will not be everyone's cup of tea - but it certainly kept me entertained and intrigued until the very last page. Most of the time I spent reading this book, I was literally asking myself "What the efff is going on right now?" Ha! I like that about a book... it kept me so entwined in the characters and wanting to know more about Lola, that I really didn't care about what was happening around her.
This was my first book by J.A. Eaton, and I truly enjoyed her style of writing - I just have one thing to say... I wish what happened at 44% happened in chapter two or three.... I feel like so much ground was lost while I was waiting on the plot to pick up. But that's just nit-picky stuff. Very, very good book. It is short so I read it all in one day, but even if it was longer I think I would have read it quickly just because of how interesting the story line and it's characters were. The pace was excellent and I never felt like the story was rushed or slowed down. The ending was fantastic and I cannot wait to get my hands on book two! I will definitely be continuing on with this series. I recommend this series to those who are into the paranormal and more specifically vampire take overs.

A Night Without Stars is well written with engaging characters. The author knows how to write a snarky, sarcastic teen very well. I read the entire thing in an afternoon not wanting to put it down. I hope the author writes another book with Lola picking up right where it left off. My only complaint is there are a few questions I would like answered and this could be done perfectly in another book. I would recommend this book to anyone that enjoys books about vampires and a kick ass/smart ass teenage heroine, and come on, who doesn't like that.

A dark, thrilling story with a spin on the lore about vampires. I absolutely fell in love with Lola from the first chapter, no, the first paragraph. She was so snarky, so authentic. But underneath the layers, she's still a girl who gets scared like everyone else and has no idea what the heck is going on.
