In this greatly expanded second edition, Beebe and Pherson have added five new and compelling case studies and fifteen new exercises that challenge students to engage in thorough and systematic thought. The result is a well-rounded and absorbing group of seventeen cases on events in foreign intelligence, counterintelligence, terrorism, homeland security, law enforcement, and decision-making support. In addition to their value as discussion cases, the case studies provide an experiential learning environment students can use to employ 27 different structured analytic techniques. Each turnkey case delivers a captivating narrative, discussion questions, recommended readings, and a series of engaging analytic exercises. The detailed Instructor Materials--available as a free PDF download to all readers from the publisher webpage--include notional solutions, key takeaways, and multimedia ancillaries that make teaching and learning effective, efficient, and rewarding.
If you are going to buy only 1 book on analytic techniques and tools, THIS is the book to buy. It is well-written, exceptionally well organized and presented, and extremely useful both for teaching and for doing analysis. In a greatly over-crowded and over-hyped field, this is the stand out book. Mark Lowenthal, author of Intelligence: From Secrets to Policy
This book paired with Structured Analytic Techniques for Intelligence Analysis provides a great overview of analytic techniques, when to use them, and examples of how they can be used in specific case studies. I highly recommend both these books for the study of analytical thinking.
This is a great guide especially when used together with Structured Analytic Techniques for Intelligence Analysis. The various case studies in this book are a great start point for understanding how the different techniques can be put to use.
An excellent book for teaching hands on application for Intel analysts and those who work with them. I used this book exclusively to prepare a capstone Intel undergrad course.
