After a long, twisted road, Alaskan Fury is my 15th book. The rest (aside from the first five or so ‘practice books’) spent the last 3-6 years languishing on my hard drive as I waited for some really cool editor at a big, traditional publishing house to notice me. It didn’t happen, even with a world-famous agent doing his damnedest to get my books out there.

So, because I’ve got a stubborn streak a mile wide—and some say because I’m a naïve, dumbass Alaskan—I’m striking out on my own and putting my books out there. Basically casting my dice to the Fates, and seeing what happens. If you like my books, please tell your friends. I don’t have a huge advertising team behind me, so word-of-mouth really helps.

On that note, my books never went through a copyeditor. What you see is the result of a few dedicated volunteers, all of whom have poured untold hours into the crafting of the book in your hands. They are awesome, steeped in awesome, sprinkled with awesome. Thanks, guys!

Further, I write fast. I can easily write 6 novels a year—8 if I don’t get distracted—and during those long years waiting for somebody to notice me, I was finding myself in the extremely frustrating position of watching my manuscripts pile up because traditional publishing companies can only take 1 or 2 novels by a single author a year. Keep an eye out for a bunch of new books from yours truly, as I've finally got an outlet for all that creative drive. :) Enjoy!

Excerpt:
"The first sound she heard after the rumble of atmosphere on her ship’s nose was, Retribution fired on the compound! Get a lock on it now!
Just like flight school, Dallas told herself as blinking dots on her viewscreen started moving towards her like an army of red ants. Forcing herself not to think about the numbers, Dallas switched off autopilot corrections, going full-manual. It was something only done in absolute emergencies…
…or by stick-fairies. Those who had the magic touch, when it came to flying machines. Dallas just hoped she still had the touch.... "

Just one of the many scenes that made this book so fun to read. Excitement, characters that you just wanted to meet, and some that you wanted to strangle. Her books will engage you the reader with laughs, heart-flutters, and wish you didn't have to go to work so you could finish the adventure instead. Sara King has fast become one of my new favorite authors who I will keep on my watch and need to buy list.

Like a good sci-fi read? Me too. Like a good character driven tale? Yeah, I do as well. Sara King never disappoints me. She always brings me characters I either want to strangle with an acid covered rope or want to hug until I squeeze their innards out. "Wings of Retribution" is no different than anything I've already mentioned. It has all the elements that I love! Nothing beats a good space pirate with a cocky attitude! The story is well written and kept me in twists and turns and constantly wondering what would happen on the next page -- sometimes almost afraid to find out. When characters piss me off and then totally redeem themselves and look like a saint in my eyes...hell, I'd read another few hundred pages to see where THAT story is going! I really hope she continues this series. Rock on Sara King!

I am a fairly new and generally rabid fan of this independent author. She bills herself as a "character-driven-fiction writer" of fantasy and sci-fi, and boy is that working for her. Her books are CRAZY well done. You are not going to believe that she is an independent. She's EXCELLENT. My only complaint is that she has the beginnings of several series but not many sequels. (And the only one with several installments is the lone series I dislike by her-mostly because it's military and has too much cruelty for my taste.)

This is the first book in a space-pirate series (waiting on book 2 to be published). It's about a society where people can live forever as long as they have access to doses of the millennium potion, which was created by Athenais' dad. He used her and her kindergarten friends as test subjects of the first version of the potion, and she and those friends are now completely immortal. Even if they burn to ash, they still regenerate. Athenais has MANY daddy issues related to this, and has wanted to take the old man down for a long time. So she's been in various resistances and worked as a pirate, just to be a thorn in his side. Now she's drawn into a crazy adventure that has a tiny chance of destroying the potion, but her friends become targets because of her, and it looks really bad for the lot of them until the end. Strangely, though, the tone stays on the light side, despite some sad and scary times in the book. The tone saves the story and makes it a lot of fun to read.

Loved the Dallas York "stick fairy" character - a stick fairy is an extremely rare individual who can fly a spaceship well manually. Also loved Rabbit, the telepathic sea creatures, and the symbiotic parasite Stuart. I'd love to see Stuart's race hire a PR firm to come up with a campaign for them. I could see them marketing themselves as a humane alternative to execution, or as "seeing eye dogs" for people with brain damage, or as medical therapists for those stuck in comas, or the easiest way to lose a TON of weight and get your body into peak condition (no personal willpower necessary!) Heck, they could be the best circus trainers EVER. It's ALWAYS about the spin, after all. I thought the "idiot people destroy what they don't understand and exploit everything they get their hands on" message was well delivered through entirely believable examples. On the other hand, I think people will eventually accept anything, no matter how unlikely seeming at first, so my marketing ideas for Stuart don't seem far-fetched as all to me. I'm surprised that something like that wasn't in the book.

Great sci-fi based book that is not bogged down by a ton of techno jargon. Also great characters (Especially enjoy the relationship between Stuart-Dallas and Rabbit-Athenias). Author does a great job of lobbing in some historical info on the characters from time to time (such as Rabbit and Athenias being married in the past).

Greatly look forward to reading more by this exciting new author (Interesting pic of her skinning a black bear on her website)

I really liked Alaskan Fire and grew to like Alakan Fury, but I just really couldn't get into this one. I'm much more a character-based reader, and none of the characters were sorts I really identified with. The sci-fi elements and story were great, but because none of the characters were sympathetic TO ME I was pretty indifferent. Sorry, Sara.

Not good

Though this book does have some comic relief...the characters are idiots. Having 7000 years of life and yet learning nothing. No growth for any of the characters. Also, the story was very choppy. Moments where the character could have grown were ended and switched to another character.

I don't quite know how or why, but I love everything that Sara King has written. It doesn't matter what genre. She always has fantastic characters with great development, incredible world building and her books take me on great adventures.

At this point, I don't even check what the book is about. If Sara King has written it, I know I'll love it. Her writing is that awesome.

Loved the first two Zero books but this one - skimmed at least a third of it. Really really long and drawn out. I didn't care for any of the characters by the end.

Thin but perhaps entertaining

The background universe is too thin and full of holes. It seems like an afterthought and the characters don't make up the lack. The entire story seems off the cuff.

The characters act like children but a crewman listening in on the captain who's in the captain's quarters, while hiding in a closet outside is incredible. This takes place on a spaceship and I can't even imagine how that works. Are the walls made of cardboard or what?

The word "pirate" is bandied about as if we're in a Johnny Deppe movie. If this was a fun spoof adventure, it might be tolerable but it seems to be a serious adventure. Her usual vibrant characters no matter how unlikable or damaged are absent here.

I bailed at the scene where the crew member eavesdrops on the captain. I like this writer and the story might work for a lot of people but the stilted society, crazy science, stock characters and weird action turned me off to this book. Compared to other space opera, this is still better than most of Amazon's offerings.

I think this should be in a new genre, something like `Crazy-Fiction.´
If you are only into hard sci-fi, then this is not for you.
This is a totally spaced out crazy ride, with a bunch of crazy human and alien characters that it is impossible not to like/care for, or hate.
The plot is entertaining and fast paced, and even if the craziness is a little overdone at times, it is such a fun break from daily life.
I really hope that there will be more stories in this universe, (Please)

Fantastic sci fi adventure

I'm not going to lie; there are too many named, liked characters who die in this book for me to be happy. Even worse, there is no sequel. Also, it was really, really hard to like Athenias. But the world building is great, the story is enthralling and awesome, and Dallas is a bright spot, albeit a total twit sometimes. Maybe, some day, we will get to read more adventures in this universe.

Brilliant

Sara King is a remarkable storyteller. I don’t know where to start really… The characters, funny, in depth, believable. The plot… twisty, turny imaginative, unpredictable. The science… thoroughly convincing. I’ve read a lot of Sara King, some books more than once, this is as good as it gets .

Would've been a 3 but the ending!

Loved, LOVED the Legend of Zero. Outer Bounds was ok. This one was just ok until the ending. I would've stopped reading the series, but the ending saved it.

Loved it!

Always love Sara King, she always makes me laugh and keeps me turning the pages. Sometimes I want to strangle her characters because they make me crazy but that's also what keeps me turning the pages.

Wow...what a ride

What a ride! I love all the characters...every one of them. The adventure and their backstory of how they all come together is excellent reading.

I read Sara King’s work when she was still writing it, still gathering ideas and information. I love the way her mind works and the story she tells is wonderfully exciting.

King does character . . . the humans, the other peoples, the "who knows how to think of them" folk . . . all are interesting. The majority have something likeable to grab onto. And there is a story, quite a good one. King gives us multiple, unique worlds, with its own ecology (physical as well as social), tastes of thousands of years (though this story is shorter term), and more. But mostly, its about the people.

I don't know that women write different sci fi than men in general, but certainly some women who write sci fi take things in different directions than do most of the men in the genre. King is one of those women. I've got to get online and find another of these!

Yet another great Sara King book!

Recently, I started and didn't finish several books. I was beginning to wonder if I'd lost interest in reading when I discovered there was a Sara King novel that I hadn't yet read. I breezed through Wings of Retribution, thoroughly enjoyed it, and was yearning for more. It is a very satisfying read that has a conclusion while (hopefully) setting the stage for a series of great books with memorable characters. I read this book while recovering from open heart surgery, and it made me feel good. Enough said.

Sara King, you are just the bomb! I'm not a sci-fi fan, so after finishing the first two books of your Alaskan series, I was hesitant to dive into this genre. Why oh why did I doubt you? Wings of Retribution introduces one of the most badass female characters I've ever come across with Athenais Owlbourne. What a gal! I can't say I'd enjoy having dinner with her, but I enjoyed the heck out of reading her story!

Great and fun read!

This book was so much fun to read. The characters seem so real, and I found myself rooting for the characters, well all of them really, as they try to "bring down the man" who happens to be the person who developed a drug to stop aging. Quite an interesting story and it all happens in outer space! Cool ships and concepts. Sara King, like usual has once again produced a great story. Highly recommend it.

Another great series. This time there's a bit more comedic aspect with space pirates in a world where people can live for hundreds of years or more due to special potion. Other alien species also have very long life spans, so all they do is put into perspective.
In first part story sometimes makes big lapses forward with characters facing the consequences in more detail.
Each character is different and gives a different feel to the story.

Fantastic read. Lots of characters and all with their own personalities.
I wanted to like the heroine, Athenais, but she wasn't very likeable. But that was the beauty of it, she was one of the main characters and was as flawed as any normal person.

Great writing. The action kept coming. The plot was engaging and I am only disappointed that there isn't a second book to read immediately after.

I found the characters in this book very engaging, with believable relationships and foibles. I particularly liked Dallas and her interactions with Stuart and Athenais. The plot could be a bit vague at times; it seemed to run backwards without warning and it sometimes took a minute to catch on. All in all, this was a strong introduction to the series premise and leaves the reader wanting more.
