I really enjoy Robin Hood type stories, both the serious ones and the ones on the lighter/more fun side. In fact I've only just finished reading Outlaw: The Story of Robin Hood by Michael Morpurgo (author of "Warhorse") (Loved it!). If you like these sort of books I am sure you will enjoy this one as well.

In Hawkfasts we are in a familiar forest, but with a new cast. A group of fearless twelve year old companions - Ethanna, Adam, and eventually Henry (Henry turns out to be the young King of England!). Although Ethanna and Adam have been in some tight places before, nothing compares to keeping this boy king safe.

The book was definitely a fun read. I am going to see if my niece would like to read it too actually, because it is one of those stories that any age can enjoy. Hopefully the author continues the adventures and antics of the Hawkfasts soon, I'll definitely be the first to buy them!

I was struggling to find a gift for an eleven-year-old boy, but I knew I enjoyed the recent book Outlaw:The True Story of Robin Hood by Michael Morpurgo (author of "Warhorse.") I'd read about HAWKFASTS on the Kindle Book Review site and downloaded a copy. I gave Hawkfasts a read myself and I have to say I couldn't put this book down. It wiped out my Saturday, and all my other plans were cancelled. Wow! What a great read. The plots moves really quickly, it's completely action-packed, humorous and with some really neat and clever plot twists. I think I'm sorted for the kid's presents now, so long as Richard Ardizzone keeps 'em coming like this!

This book is a vivid re-imagining of the classic "medieval forest" story, and there are few children's authors quite so compelling as Richard Ardizzone. In HAWKFASTS he subtly and skilfully makes this long-ago world of action and danger accessible without ever patronising his young readers. He has that rare gift of being able to speak to both child and adult readers alike and I have no hesitation in recommending this book to everybody.

Richard Ardizzone's lead character, the feisty, fiery, flame-haired Ethanna Culpepper is very similar to the Princess Merida character in the Disney Pixar movie "Brave." But I'm sure this is just a coincidence, it's looking like 2012 will be the summer of sassy girl scrapper characters!

My daughter loved reading "Payback In Time" by Richard Ardizzone,
so I went to Amazon and discovered another book that he had written.
"Hawkfasts" By Richard Ardizzone is what I found and I bought it and
gave it to her to read. She couldn't put it down and read it from
cover to cover, declaring that it was just as good as the other book.

The story is fun with a good mixture of witchcraft and reality. If
you like Robin Hood style of action adventure, I'm sure you would
enjoy this book. Get it and try it out on 12 year old who likes
tales of imagination and fantasy

The book Hawkfasts is about a girl named Ethanna Culpepper and she has these magical powers that are only used for the forest from where she is from. She meets a boy named Adam Bell and rescued him from the clutches of under sheriff. This book is really interesting and different from all of the other novels that I have read. It sort of reminds me of the Hunger Games and has an amazing ending.

Richard Ardizzone’s children’s fantasy “Hawkfasts” is inspired by English history and folklore, especially the Robin Hood tales, but it’s not a zillion miles away from the new Disney Pixar film BRAVE, which is steeped in Scottish myth and legend. I’m tempted to say that Hawfasts’ lead character, Ethanna Culpepper, is England’s answer to Princess Merida (the girl from Brave.) Having read and loved Hawkfasts, I just can’t wait to see the Brave movie!

pretty good as a fantasy, but distinctly lax on historical detail and language. a decent book for the 8-12 age range. lots of action scenes, a girl kicking butt and taking charge, and an interesting plot makes for a quick read.

This is a fun book for the 9 - 12 age group with plenty of humour and action. When's the sequel?

Saw this advertized on Benningtons site and thought it looked good for the price. It took me right back to my days watching Robin of Sherwood - its got that awesome Richard Carpenter mix of sword and sorcery, but in a fun modern way. Very humorous too! I'll def be checking out his other books over the next few weeks
