This book has two short-stories in it. Cecelia Ahern's writing is generally very detailed. Whilst the first book felt like the usual Cecelia Ahern story, the second felt nothing like it and I am not even a fan of her writing but it still felt off.

Girl in the Mirror - 2 stars
This story started out really well but the ending was a huge let down.

The Memory Maker - 0 stars
The Memory Maker started out really confusing but I kept on reading it expecting that may at some point it will start to make sense but no, the story made no sense at all throughout.

Overall 2 stars

Let's just say, I really wasn't impressed with this one. Looking at others' reviews, I see that no one was.

I didn't mind that the book was small, and I would not have minded the cost so much, as long as the content was worth it.

Unfortunately, it really wasn't.

The second story was just so slow - and that's saying something as it was such a short story - and very confusing! The first story started out great, but I think the way it ended was such an anti-climax to the whole build up of it. I was a little surprised when I saw the book at the store at how small it was, and that it consisted of TWO different stories. I bought it anyway though, because I am such a huge fan of Cecelia's previous works. I have all her books, and I love her. I love the uniqueness of her stories and the way she spins them. This however, was a huge disappointment in comparison. I finished the book in just over an hour, and I was left feeling very unsatisfied.

I think that if Cecelia had focused her efforts on the first short story and extended it into a full blown book, she would've done a much better job at it. I'm still a fan though, and I still look forward to her next book.

The book is well written, but the first story left me with an uneasy feeling...
On the one hand, it is difficult to be sure what really happened (with a bit more imagination, almost all possibilities are open for the three beings that were "trapped" in the situation... Jeremy seemed to sense that "something was wrong" - why does he not do something about it? Is it credible that the Grandmother would sacrifice the young man to recover her granddaughter, albeit in a man's body? Why not then change places with her granddaughter? But the question of the only two bodies available makes one wonder.

The second story is different. Also a bit somber, but very touching. To capture memories would not have been such an innovative idea. But to create memories that rectify the past and heal a wounded heart, that is something moving...

Overall, I enjoyed reading, but its very somberness leaves an aftertaste that is heavy...

This is my first novel by Cecilia Ahern. Yeah, I know. After her huge success with P.S. I Love You many years back, I have to be some special kind of an idiot to not have read anything by her. Yet, here we are. Regaaaaardless,
This little gem of a book containing two absolutely beautiful, grasping stories left me totally in love with the author. How can such power, such suspense, such strong emotion be wrapped inside a mere handful of pages is beyond my comprehension, really. I mean yes, I have read many short stories, most of them pretty amazing but all of them were by more classic writers. And even with all her merits as a writer, with all the hype surrounding her, I could not have guessed Cecilia Ahern to write such soulful words.
Deeply affected.
Moved.
There’s absolutely NOTHING to not like in this pretty little heartthrob. It’s an essential for everyone. Everyone who loves books. And above all appreciates power packed stories.

Now let me break it down for you:

THE GIRL IN THE MIRROR

Lila knows how lucky she is to have found the man of her dreams. But when a secret from her family’s past comes to light on her wedding day, her destiny changes in the most unexpected of ways…

This is the first story. Divided in two episodes. One set in July 1992 when and the other in July 2010, tracking the maturity of little Lila.

LOVED IT FOR THE FOLLOWING:

First off, the beginning with a dialogue always impresses me. It sort of sets the tone with exactly the right colours. Plays the tune with exactly the right key. It’s essential. (Not that all good books need to be started with a dialogue.)

‘Grellie, Grellie, I’m here.’ Lila knocked on the door, excitedly.

Tell me you did not get intrigued. Tell me you do not want to know why the hell is Lila so excited. Well, I ,for one, was. I still am so absorbed in the story. As it says on the book’s cover, it is ‘unforgettable’.

The author also has a way of directing and employing the reader’s emotions and feelings just the she likes and wants. When Lila was trapped, I felt it was me around whom the walls, the darkness was closing in.
The plot is so complete. Leaving nothing unanswered but at the same time not giving out everything at once. Such a short story and yet it paints a whole picture. Just the way any reader would want.
Here it is in my words:

What if there is a mirror and in it lives someone. Someone who is everything you are not. Someone who wants to be everything that you are. Someone who is bitter due to being trapped on the wrong side of the world for so long. Someone who will change the course of your life forever, set it on a path miles away from it’s original tracks.

Well, there you have it. Read the book to get all the answers because it will be cruel of me to risk anymore information. It would take away the suspense, the thrill. And surely, you don’t think me the sort who would, consciously, want to defeat the author’s purpose. Upon my naked word, I would not!

THE MEMORY MAKER

They say you never forget your first love. But what happens when those cherished memories start to fade? Some people would do anything to hold on to the past and, for one heartbroken man, that means finding a way to relive those precious moments…

Why is it that the most prized stories are the ones dealing with loss of someone? Where they let go of the ones they love without saying all the many things they wanted to say? Without seeing them for a last time? Without a last goodbye? A last kiss? Hearing their voice for the last time?
Because, once dead, they are ever alive in our memories. Once out of all sight, all sign of existence, they ache our hearts with a pain so intense! So real!

And that is the case with the protagonist. He is affected by a most haunting kind of memory. A most sickening kind of love. Such that we would not wish to be inflicted on anyone. And he wants to change it. But he cannot get himself to do it. And instead, his invention, the memory maker, is converted, to his displeasure, into a business. Because he knows what it means, making a memory superficially. It’s a facade. It doesn’t end the torment inflicted by the former one. It just clouds it. Making the unpleasant memories hard to remember. But what he doesn’t know is anything accompanied by strong emotions will eventually be real to you. Whether you want it or not. And this he discovers eventually. When he finds her. Not the one he’d lost. But the one he obviously needs.

This story, in a course of mere forty pages, left me emotionally worked up to a degree I had not intended nor expected. So much so that by the end, I found myself whispering the words through a choked throat. Experiencing each and every painful flashback that he goes through, the protagonist.

LOVED IT FOR EVERYTHING!

Plus, throughout the book, there were these pretty little drawings, I think by the author herself though I am not sure, which I absolutely adored. So cute. They added to the reader’s imagination in just the right intensity. In just the right proportions to give it all a mysterious air. Sweet.

In conclusion, I would recommend this to everyone. No matter your reading preferences. The most honest, the rawest emotions never change. They are ever inherent in us. Love and Loss. Both being the basis of our life. The start and finish of everything.

I have read almost all of Cecelia Ahern's books, and liked them. They have all had an important message. But these two have been a little harder to figure out. The first one, girl in the mirror, is about vanity and sacrifice. Would you exchange your eyes for freedom? Would you sacrifice a stranger to gain your freedom back? Well, Lila sacrificed a stranger. I don't really no what the point of the story was...

The memory maker was better. There was a point, cherish your memories. Memories fade, and sometimes you make the wrong ones. So live and cherish the moment, the present.

I don't know if I've misunderstood the stories, they were a little bit weird. But Cecelia Ahern is a really good writer and it was beautifully written.

GIRL IN THE MIRROR

I have to say, for the majority of the read, I was engaged; I was curious—I wanted to see where everything was going. However, that ending . . . it sucked. I wanted a better resolve; I wanted something with a happier ending. And I feel like this story could've been longer, as well.

THE MEMORY MAKER

I didn't really enjoy this story. It was, at times, confusing, and I wasn't that engaged. It wasn't terrible—the writing was lyrical. I feel like this story could've been expanded on, as well.

There were two short stories in this one book: "Girl in the Mirror" and "The Memory Maker". Both had the typical magic of Ahern's books, and also made me think a lot.

"Girl in the Mirror" was a lot darker and more sad than I can remember any other of Ahern's book having been. It was almost like a scary ghost story.

"The Memory Maker" was rather thought provoking.

Both stories were really good, I was worried when I picked it up that I would want them to be longer, that it would be too short when it wasn't a "regular" size book, but they were perfect just as they were. Proof that good stories can come in small packages.

This was my first Cecelia Ahern book. I expected a lot more from it.
The first story, as F***ed up as it is, is relatively haunting.
The second story, on the other hand, is very vague and I guess, one could call it "beautiful" but it's just not my type of book. I like it when the characters are vague not the plot.
So, overall, I did not like the book too much, or rather, I did not like the book at all, and hence I refuse to give it more than one star.

Follow Just A Girl High On Books for more reviews.

I'm someone who has read quite a few books by Cecelia Ahern by now and I've loved almost all of them. So reading a book that I didn't very much like was a little disappointing. It is short and took me less time than her novels do, mainly because they're so huge, but that doesn't change the fact that it disappointed me too.

So Girl in the Mirror: Two Stories is, like the name suggests, two short stories combined in one book. The first story is titled "Girl in the Mirror" and is about a girl who takes over our main character's life and no one is the wiser. The main character's story is weird and when you read, you'll probably understand what I mean. However, there were things in it that didn't make sense to me. SPOILER ALERT!

The Memory Maker is about a man who has somehow built a machine that can create memories. And print them, too, I guess? I'm not so sure about that because I didn't clearly understand what his machine does. But I do know that he made it so as to relive the memories of his beloved. The thing about this one was that it was a little too slow. And for a short story, that's saying something.

It kind of sucks that this was the first work by Cecelia Ahern that disappointed me a little. But because of the way she writes, I still couldn't give it anything less than a 3.5. I wish Goodreads allowed for half stars because then I would have definitely rated it appropriately!

The Memory Maker....

"Because I know how a moment can pass - how you’ve really wanted to say something to someone or do something, but something happens and you don’t, and you almost want to explode afterwards because you didn’t do it."

It was like a short dose or Cecelia Ahern 😊

I have to agree with the other comments about this book, I was disappointed. More with the first story, Girl in the Mirror, than with the second.

I was excited to try out Cecelia's short stories having read all her novels, but with the magical worlds she creates for her readers a short story did not give enough time for everything to make sense or for a relationship to be built with her characters. Girl in the Mirror ended far too abruptly and left me feeling confused and wanting to find out exactly how Lila escaped her mirror world, because I don't think it was explained very clearly. Also what about the pretend Lila? Are we to except she continued to live Lila's life forever?

The second story, The Memory Maker, was much better. It was still difficult to get a connection with any of the characters, but I think the imaginary scenarios that Cecelia created here was easier to grasp and at least the ending flowed better.

I'll definitely read her next novel, but I'll give her future short stories a miss.

I was very keen to try out Ahern's short stories but I must say whilst I enjoyed the two stories, I was left feeling unsatisfied, not because they were badly written but because the stories were so gripping I wished they were longer! The first story Girl in the Mirror had me hooked in seconds but ended rather abruptly, if this short story was of novel length it could have been twisted in several ways. However saying all that, I was still impressed by Ahern's writing style and can't wait for her next novel. Well worth a quick read only took about an hour or so to get through.

It has probably been around three years since I last read a Ceclia Ahern book. I’ve always adored her as a writer. Her stories are beautiful, unique and always have a dash of magic in them. Her plots always remind me of fairy tales and this book was no different either. It has two short stories : The Girl in the Mirror and The Memory Maker. After reading the first story, there was a haunting feeling suspended in me. The second story was very Cecelia Ahern-esque, for the lack of a better word. It was a nice read overall.

This was a cute pair of short stories! Although the writing style was rather simple throughout, occasionally telling rather than showing, the stories themselves had interesting plots and endings well suited to the content before them.

There are two stories in this book: Girl in the Mirror and The Memory Maker. I wish it would be a bit longer for both stories but the stories are still good as it is.

The Memory Maker is a bit sad. Makes me think a lot. 3/5

Inhalt:

A pak odchází a on už ji nikdy nespatří.
