An indie novel, This Blood sounded interesting. Unfortunately, I have read this story (or a version of it) quite often.

It's true it has no glaring mistakes or weird phrases, but is plagued by acute cases of marysueness. The heroine is the usual fake-human (but in reality Other) female with incredible powers and sex-appeal. Every (of course gorgeous) male around her can't wait to have her.

Characters are flat, and the writing could not keep me hooked. I skipped most of it.

The story ends with a sort of cliff-ending.

Pre-review:

I got a free copy of this book from Google Play-Book but........10 pages into the story, there are already two unearthly handsome supernatural guys eyeing the heroine and wanting to get to her?

*Sighs* I think I'll pass.

Just could not get into this book, and I finished it with a "WTH did I just read?!". No world building whatsoever, action starts and they're coping with one thing after another. The font was wonky in the Kindle edition, and unable to be changed, which was very distracting to me. Could not engage with any of the characters and didn't care what happened at the cliffhanger ending. Deleting from my Kindle Library and abandoning the series.

This Blood was an exceptional read! Not an ordinary vampire novel that's for sure. The author is exceptional in keeping you glued to the pages. She manages to give you every emotion to man and that's an exceptional talent that's few and far between.

Grace is a character to grows into her own and becomes the person she's destined to be. She's not only badass but funny and quirky and that gives a since of realness that one could relate too.

The men in this story makes you week in the knees! They are all amazing. There is Seth that is hard to turn away from. Grace has a pull towards him she doesn't understand. His heart is cold but he is gorgeous! Life doesn't seem to matter to him except for sustenance.

Lucian is a man of your dreams. He is thoughtful, considerate and a perfect fine looking gentlemen. He'd do anything for Grace. Grace wants that in her life but at the moment Seth ruined it.

Together these beings embark on a journey of adventure, torture, kickass events with passions in your wildest dreams. Be prepared it's dark and bloody but freaking awesome!

The author is exceptional in her writing because it explains in such detail but makes it flows easily in away that you can follow. For example, sometimes fight scenes are hard to follow but these are easy to follow in your head. You managed to have every emotion possible so be prepared to be on the edge of your seat. It's a hell of a ride!

This was kind of a slow start for me. Maybe because I was itching to get to the action! I was a little put off with the descriptions in the places used, and a little redundant on the explanation of feelings at times. Though after about 1/3 of the book, I didn't want to put it down! I liked how the girl MC wasn't helpless or whiny. She wants to take action, and wants results fast. The two men MC's were not bad themselves. For me they are like the angel and devil that appear on either side of you when you need to make a decision. Though both of them are hotties, for now I cannot decide on who I like more.

As the book progressed, I found myself wanting to turn the pages till the end. I would recommend this to any paranormal or paranormal romance lovers out there! Can't wait to dive in the next book!

This book took me out of my normal reads & made me have a new appreciation of reading a sci-fi type of book!! Basso takes you into a world of vampires, fop's, mythical type creatures & seductresses!! It's full of excitement, romance, & a little old fashioned ass kicking!! This Blood is a well written, easy flowing book that makes you want more!! Just when you think you know what's going to happen; a new twist is thrown at you!! This book kept me on edge until the last hello....

Amazing book that is action packed! At first I wasn't sure about Grace but I quickly fell in love with her spunky spirit and her willingness to help her friends. I don't want to give it all away in this review so I would highly suggest that you read this one for yourself! Can't wait for the next book in the series. Thank you Alisha!

I found Grace annoying and a bit ditzy. She doesn't have too much going for her other than being beautiful and having latent powers that were ill defined and too easily controlled, considering they were just suddenly dumped in her lap. Worse was the fact that she loses the ability to think with any kind of intelligence the minute she lays eyes on a beautiful man. The plot of the story wasn't too bad however, nor was the writing. I might have enjoyed this book enough to give it three stars, if not for my annoyance with characters.

****SPOILER ALERT*****

I usually do my best to keep spoilers out of my reviews, but I can't express my main problem with this book without being slightly spoilery. And that main problem is Grace and Seth. I like bad boys in fiction. I like enemies to lovers. I like a male character with a bit of danger to him. There is a fine line, however, between a bad boy and an ***hole.
Now, I get that Seth is a vampire. He is a villain. All that I could have been fine with. My issue is Grace's response to him, especially after he magically roofies her to get her to have sex with him, then explains it away by saying that she wanted to have sex with him, and he just removed her inhibitions. Her response to this is to just go with it and then have sex willingly with him afterwards.
Seth is gorgeous. That's all that he has going for him. He kidnaps Grace, assaults her on several occasions, drags her around like a dog on a leash, and threatens to murder her friends if she doesn't cooperate with him. If she had reacted differently to Seth, if she had been shown to go along with him only to protect her friends, I wouldn't have had this problem. After everything Seth did, for Grace to react to him the way that she did, really bothered me. Every time they interacted with each other, I wanted to bang my head against the wall.

Nope... I did not enjoy this book like I hoped I would. I almost DNF’d it, but I kept going. I hate giving poor reviews because I know authors work hard, but I didn’t enjoy it. This includes spoilers, so don’t read on...I HATED the FMC and who she slept with. Not like a fun hate, either. A true vehemence. Like she had no control whatsoever over herself. She came off as weak and annoying. Not to mention, the last few chapters felt very rushed with way too much closure all at once. There are more books in this series, but I feel no desire to read more. not enjoy this book like I hoped I would. I almost DNF’d it, but I kept going. 3.5 Stars.

Not feeling the need to dive into the next installment, but might revisit the series at a later date.

Likes: some action scenes, elements of mystery and suspense, main female character isn't an idiotic-damsel type, intriguing setting and worldview, unique characters, steamy scenes, use of humor.

Dislikes: mostly cropped up in the last quarter of the book, whole chapters seemed rushed, writing quality suffered for it, climax felt anticlimactic, female main character became a bit shallow and annoying.

I read this book because it was on Fantasy Romance stuff your kindle day and the description seemed interesting enough. I almost DNF’d multiple times just because of typos. The misspelling of one of the characters names (Ann, then Anne) just makes me think this was not proofread at all. All the grammatical errors made it hard to focus on the book itself.
The magic concept could have been interesting, but the fact that the main character immediately had control over it with no training was just too unrealistic to me (even for fantasy). There was no world building and I’m honestly shocked with myself for finishing this. I def won’t be reading the rest of this series, I just do not care enough about what happens to any of these characters.

This is not a good read. Story line is the only thing that is good. Character and their decision making don't make sense at all. Main character has the power to make changes yet don't even bother to try.

interesting

An interesting take on the more common supernatural tales.
There were times when I got irritated with the lead character but by the end, all was forgiven.
Looking forward to reading the next book

Alisha Basso's "This Blood" (the first book in her Grace Allen series of novels) is a suspenseful, exciting take on the supernatural world.

Grace is a waitress at a dive bar, and one day is much like another: get dressed in the too-revealing outfits her boss demands, drive to work (praying her car survives for another day), sling booze for several hours, go home, lather, rinse, repeat. Until she finds a ring just lying in the gutter. Grace pawns it for cash, but soon enough the new owner of the ring shows up at the bar looking for her.

It turns out he's a vampire, and not just any vampire, but THE vampire lord, and he's going to use that ring to rule the world. It turns out the ring isn't just a ring; it's got the power of an ancient and nearly extinct race of powerful beings poured into it. And only the last child of that race can awaken the power. You guessed it, that's Grace. Soon she finds herself the prisoner of the vampire lord, along with her best friend and a warlock who tried to warn her about the ring and the vampires. Will Grace come up with a plan to escape Seth, the vampire lord and would-be ruler of the world? Will she figure out how to master the power of the ring? Will she save her friends? You'll have to read the book for yourself to find out.

The book is narrated by Grace, and she's got a lively and fun voice. She responds believably, turning at first to pop-culture fantasy references to try and understand the new world she's been plunged into, and slowly getting used to the supernatural all around her without losing her humanity. She's very easy for the reader to identify with as she leads us along in her adventures.

It's well-written with clean, clear prose. There's plenty of action, both of the martial and the bedroom varieties, and a well-fleshed out (both figuratively and literally!) cast of supporting characters. It's a fun read, and I'm looking forward to the next installment.

This Blood
By: Alisha Basso

I give this book 3 stars

I really enjoyed Grace's adventure. Grace's life takes a turn for the weird after she finds and sells a ring. That one thing changes her life forever. If someone told me I was going to change into some mystical being I would be freaking the hell out! All Grace can really think of is saving her friends. I have to admit her powers are awesome I wouldn't mind having them. :) Alisha does a good job of showing emotion, that at time in the book I sat there and though if I was in Grace's place I would be doing the same things she was. She is faced with a lot of difficult decisions plus her hormones and feelings kind of get in the way at times but she pulls through in the end.

Ann is Grace's best friend and she gets sucked into the middle of what is going on with Grace. What I found weird is that Ann didn't have any questions for Grace. She just kind of went with it maybe she was to shocked I don't know. Ann is a good friend she might think more about looks than she should but no one is perfect. Now Lucian is my favorite!! I love that he treats Grace the way a man should treat a woman. I think Grace and Lucian will make the best couple but Grace is fighting it and in her place I would to. I just hope that in the books to come we see their relationship grow. Seth is the one that make all the trouble for Grace in this book. He is a sexy vampire that wont take no for an answer. I do think that Seth does have feelings for Grace I just don't know if they are because he has almost becomes addicted to her blood. Hopefully we will find the answers in the next book.

With the way the book ends I cant wait to see what Alisha has in store for the next book. If you are looking for a story that has a lot of action in and out of the bedroom, where people face tough decisions, and an ending that leaves you hanging you will enjoy this book.

This Blood by Alisha Basso
The Grace Allen Series
Grace Allen is just a girl struggling to survive. Working at a bar called The Edge for a grumpy boss and odd co-worker. Her life is pretty boring. Soon enough Grace wishes it was like that again. It all changed one night at the bar when the most sexiest man she ever encountered came to the bar. He was looking for her and wearing the very ring she had found and sold. No way he would know who she was. When a second most sexiest man ever tries to warn her that she is someone special and he could keep her safe, she ignored him. Big mistake.

Lucian is sweet and handsome but Grace has trust issues. Especially when he’s trying to tell her she is the only one of her kind. Until now she didn’t even know there were all these different creatures of myth roaming the earth, let alone that she was one of them.

Seth McPhee is a powerful vampire, hungry for more. He finds a way to achieve it when he learns about Grace. What he can’t get with his looks and charm….he’ll take.

This story is told from Grace’s view. It’s fast moving and intense at times. Definitely goes to show you that no matter how handsome the guy is….don’t mean he’s a good guy. Fact is, Grace meets all kinds of hunky guys and each one seems more evil than the next one. This is the first book of a series and leaves the reader ready and waiting for book two.

I always take the time to read a sample of books and the reviews others write on a book, I think that alot of times it all explains what the reader takes from it, we all see things in a different perspective. I seen more likes than dislikes.. as I read the sample, I couldn't get the story out of my head to find out what was going to happen next, so I downloaded it after putting it on the back shelf to finish another one I was reading, I still was unable to get the thought of what was going to happen next to Grace out of my head.. so I put the other book aside to read the full version of "This Blood", wow was I a happy Camper to read this! like some stories the Author gets stuck in a repetitive cycle throughout the first half of the book, but not this one, I only seen one or two repeats to a dream (which was a part of how Seth got into her Head), other than that is was a smooth read all the way through, had me on the edge of my seat not wanting to put it down for everyday life..very Intriguing story with the love twists had my heart pounding! I didn't once think of any other book to read all throughout this story, really had me spellbound! (I got online to see if there were any other books she wrote) can't wait for the second one of the continuing saga of Grace, Great Job on writing this story Ms. Brasso!

I will admit towards the middle, I almost stopped reading the book- not because of the writing, but because of the 'poor woman trapped in impossible circumstances forced into the bed of the evil...' well, you get the idea, I felt trapped in a cliche, well, a few of them anyway. But! I decided to hang on for a little longer, and was rewarded by a nice shift in the storyline, and amazingly Grace found a bit of backbone I had seen hints of at the beginning of the story. I enjoyed the fresh plot line, and there were a few weak spots in the story, but I think the author did a good job of pulling everything together towards the end. The writing is good, and the character, Grace, was witty and (after a short period of whining, she was wise and thoughtful. I am looking forward to the next book as I think the author has a great character and storyline with great possibilities! If nothing else, the book offers up the classic George Burns tribute "Goodnight Gracie."

This Blood ( Grace Allen, #1) by Alisha Basso is one Sweet and Hot as Hades Book!!!

Man oh man what a great cliffhanger. I actually fell over on my couch after the last page.
This book might seem slow at first but let me tell you it is well worth it. OMG The author brings you into a world of pure exciting danger wrapped up in such hot men, lol. Sweet!!
Vampires, Warlocks, Elves, Trolls are just some of the badasses. And a human girl who's world is about to get rocked, and not in a good way.

Grace Allen is one great story and you will not want to miss the beginning of this fabulous series. I know it will hook any pnr fans that love danger, excitement and a whole lot of yummy.

I know everyone has heard of vampres, werewolves, witches, and warlocks, but have you ever heard of a Madea? Grace finds a ring and decides to sell it. What she didn't realize, was that trying that ring on started a huge change in her that could never be turned back, a change to turn her into a Medea. With her friends captured and a wicked vampire holding the ring that binds her powers, she is forced to do his bidding. She plans to bide her time and free her friends, no matter the personal sacrafice.
Alisha Basso weaves a wonderful new world with strong characters. I devoured this book in one sitting. A great new series by an indie author.

There are vampires hunting grace for her special gifts that she doesn't even know about. On the flip side Lucien found her and is trying to help her fight Seth, a very intriguing vampire.

I liked the concept of the story and the author does a good job explaining everything. I felt that everything just seemed too easy for grace and she was kind of whiny throughout the story. I was never able to connect with any of the chargers nor find them overly appealing.

Note: I received this book free from amazon, all opinions have been my own.
