Some kinds of music, singing and chanting feel good to me and I have often wondered why. I tried the vocal toning exercises and experimented with a Tibetan singing bowl when I had the flue and experienced a temporary, general uplifting feeling.

This grab-bag compendium of makers and users of tones, overtones, harmonics suffers from lite-scholarship, but as a quick overview of the subject it is okay. Most useful are the instructions for producing sounds. Goldman's real gift is most likely as a practitioner not a writer.

As a fairly new sound-worker, this book opened up the subject for me, both on a spiritual level, and on a level of easy understanding. I applaud Jonathon Goldman for bringing the world of sound to light for someone who does not easily store information.

Excellent gateway to sound healing in general and harmonics specifically. There's plenty to learn here (hear) for all levels of interest in sound healing, even when returning for a second read after a decade of deeper study.

Very Interesting book that makes one think of sound much differently, with various connections between ancient cultures and their use of sound in rituals and traditions. The book takes you around the world and briefly introduces the reader to these different cultures, their beliefs and how Harmonics has been used for that particular culture: anywhere from South Amrerican shamans, to Tibetan Gyuto monks to Australian aboriginals. The book takes the reader on a trip around the world through time and offers readers fresh approach towards application and mystery of sound.

What if different sounds and tones have magical healing properties that align our bodies on a molecular level, induce altered states of consciousness, communicate with un-earthy beings and spark new life in its existence. These are just few of the concepts discussed in the book.

Wow, the german translation of this classic book on sound healing unnerved me. It dawned on me that it was just the translation that put me off when I switched to the english version - much better! Interesting fundamental information, a really good introduction to the field of healing sounds. I love how intuitive an undogmatic Goldman's method of sound healing is. There is no: apply frequency / sound / tone A when encountering symptome B. This is a method that everyone can use.

Very interesting and opened up new perspectives for me in how I perceive sound. For someone fairly new to spirituality, some of the things described in the book seemed a bit eccentric to me, but were still intriguing. The newer scientific findings of physiological benefits from these healing sounds included in the 30th anniversary edition are very exciting and show the huge potential that sound has when it comes to healing our minds and bodies.

Such a great book! I’ll definitely be going back to it to learn and do some of the vocal harmonics/overtone practices. It was a journey through sound healing across all cultures and ended with practical applications for it! I’m excited to find my first person to vocally tone on. Apparently, it makes the recipient light-headed.

Jonathan Goldman writes a great book about the power of sound to heal the body. Sound, frequency, and harmonics have been used in ancient traditions to transform and heal, and are now receiving attention as modern science catches up to study how entrainment, resonance, and the physics of sound waves affect all living organisms.

Goldman explains, both in scientific terms and through his personal experience, how the frequencies and vibrations in sound affect our physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being. He also focuses on a topic that was fascinating to me: sound harmonics, or overtones, which are the subtle frequencies that accompany every given note. They are present in all music, and even in our speech, but we rarely notice them. He, however can sing both a note and its overtone –two notes at the same time!– with his own voice, creating a deep and almost eery sound that is used for self-healing and for expanding consciousness.

Through his detailed explanations of how to sing two notes at the same time (and through watching a few YouTube videos on the subject) I am now successfully overtone singing! My range is still limited but he encourages daily practice to expand and strengthen the volume of the overtones.

Many spiritual practices use toning, chanting, and the use of tuning forks or singing bowls. Goldman teaches how music and spirituality are connected, and how by using mantras, sacred music, and especially the power of intention, we can heal through sound.

This is a fascinating book. Jonathan takes us on a journey of discovery, showing us why sound is such a powerful healing tool. He does this by explaining the science of sound, but more importantly by sharing his own stories and experiences of learning and working with sound. This book has encouraged me to open up to sound in a most magical way.
