#2 in the Nashville Nights romance series

As with the first book in this series, I found the characters to be kind of annoying. Lexi just seems to play hard to get, for no solid reason. OK, so she had a tough childhood, followed by an abusive marriage, which prompted her to swear off men and relationships. Throughout all this, however, she continued to be "best friends" with Jake, her sister and Trey's security guy. But now that Jake wants to get more serious, she keeps putting him off. And putting him off. Over and over--it was too much of the same thing, in my opinion. Her argument was OK, I suppose, but it got old fast and never really had a lot of substance to it. We love each other, we want each other, but no-no, we must resist because I want me freedom--blah blah blah. Oh yeah, until she had her "epiphany." Good thing Jake is patient, because she certainly made him wait (and struggle) for his happily ever after. All in all, I don't love these characters, but the books are quick and easy reads, pleasant enough as long as you don't worry too much about the annoyances. I'll keep going with the series to read about Luc and Marisa's story next.

After reading the first book in this series, Shameless, I knew this was a series that would become an autobuy for me. With its intriguing characters and with emotions running high in the music city capital I found myself fully immersed in the lives of these friends and families. While this story is more flawed than the previous installment, it's still an enjoyable read that sets up one or two interesting premises for future books in the series.

In Fearless, the emotional rollercoaster ride continues for friends, and wannabe lovers, Lexi and Josh. Both of these people have been burned in their previous relationships which makes them a bit hesitant, especially Lexi whose previous relationship was full of physical and emotional abuse. While Josh wants to remarry and have a family, the only woman who he can see in that role is Lexi who definitely wants to stay single and unencumbered. She's willing to have a friends with benefits relationship but that's not enough for him and he doesn't want to ruin their friendship by carrying on that way, so they're at an impasse through almost the entire book. Their understanding, once it finally comes, happens rather suddenly and ends up being rushed through at the very end.

The issues keeping this couple apart are pretty standard in romance novels, so the emotional impact wasn't as affective as the problems plaguing the couple in the previous book. Josh was an immensely likable character, sexy and strong and great with his teenage sons. His actions and frustrations throughout the story were believable and easily relatable. His sexiness was especially evident during their sexual interludes which were intense and made me wish there were more of them. My biggest problem with the story lies with Lexi and her actions. I'm sympathetic to the pain she endured but I don't feel she entirely learned from her past. She became strong in body but her choices in men and how she conducts herself really annoyed me at times. First, to not confide in her family and friends, knowing that they too could be in danger from a psycho didn't sit well with me. Second, and the biggest issue for me, came when she immediately trusted a guy she just met in a bar to travel with her and stay at her home just the two of them. It's quite obvious this man is there for nefarious reasons and before long his storyline evolves into utterly ridiculous and highly annoying and left me even more irritated with Lexi.

The secondary characters in this story were likable and it was nice revisiting the couple from the previous book and how they're still an intregal part of the story. Josh's twin teenage sons were particularly well-portrayed with a realistic vocabulary and actions. Lots of couples are still in limbo and with a big secret being revealed a big can of worms is now open and has me excited to see the effect that this will have in future books.

While this story paled in comparison to the previous book, there's still plenty of enjoyment to be found. This group of friends and family are appealing with realistic issues affecting their lives. The hero in this book was to die for with many qualities that any woman would kill for. It's easy to get caught up in the emotional rollercoaster of the Nashville Nights series and I'm waiting with bated breath for the next installment.

My Summary:
Lexi Brooks has decided to move back to Nashville. She's had success as a real estate investor, traveled the world, and lives and adventurous lifestyle. Now, she wants to be back home near her family and friends. Her sister, Sierra, is married to country music star Trey Turner and Lexi wants to be home before Sierra gives birth to their baby. She also wants to be close to Trey's bodyguard Josh. Lexi has always had feelings for Josh, but he's looking for something that she can't give him. She has her reasons, but will he be able to understand?

Josh Cooper is a former cop turned bodyguard. He has teenage twin sons and is looking to settle down again. Josh wants wife, not a girlfriend or a fling. He wants a mother for his son's and would also like to have more kids someday. Lexi and Josh have known each other for a long time now. Josh finally lets himself act on his feelings for Lexi, but can he convince her to listen to her own heart and give them a chance at something permanent?

My Take:
I'm really enjoying this series. Shameless is the first book and is about Trey and Sierra's story. I completely fell in love with them, so naturally I was excited to continue the series to Lexi and Josh's story.

Lexi came into Sierra and Trey's story near the end, so I didn't have much time with her before her story. I liked what I saw though, so I couldn't wait to see how her character would develop. Lexi's story was a bit more complex than what I thought it would be. She's had to deal with some pretty horrifying things and I admire her strength in overcoming those situations. Lexi created a successful life for herself and became completely self sufficient. She needed to be in order to help her get through her painful past. I felt sad that she tried to shut love out of her life though. Not that she didn't have "relationships," but no one was ever able to break through the thick skin she developed. Josh was so determined to get through to her and wouldn't settle for what she wanted. I loved that Josh was exactly the person she needed to help heal her from those past hurts.

As for supporting characters in Fearless, I adore Josh's sons! They are so sweet and I was thrilled that they tried to get Josh and Lexi together. I loved Trey and Sierra's story, so I was happy to see bits of them again. Also, I really like Trey's sister Marissa. She's been a key character through out the series. Not only is she Trey's sister, but she has become close to Sierra and Lexi. Luc is Trey's manager and Marissa's ex-boyfriend. He is the only one I'm not so sure about, but won't give up on him yet.

Overall, I really like the series and am so happy that I found it through the blog tour. I'm not sure I would have seen in otherwise. I really adore all of the characters in the series. The next book in the series is called Ruthless, which is Marissa and Luc's story. I really look forward to seeing if Marissa can break Luc down.

My Review:
This is a tough book to review, because although I enjoyed the book and I ADORE all these characters, I personally had issues with the main conflict of the book. I found it really hard to believe. Lexi is Sierra's little sister. Sierra was the heroine from book #1, Shameless (that review was up yesterday.) Josh is a former cop and third degree black belt who acts as head of Trey's security. Trey was the hero of Shameless.

Josh and Lexi have been friends for a long time...good friends and they are both fighting an attraction to each other because they want different things from a relationship. Josh is 40 and is ready to get married again. He has 16 yo twin boys, but he wants more kids. He wants a white picket fence again. Lexi grew up with an abusive father and even though she said she never would, fell into an abusive relationship which ended badly. After that, she swore she never wanted to become that deeply involved again. She simply wants sex and fun...no long-term relationships.

My issue with this book is Lexi's reasoning. As a reader, I just wasn't buying it. She was engaged to this abusive jerk...and yes, she made a mistake. But she's best friends with Josh. She knows absolutely that he is not like that. And she's already gone past the point of no-return...she's fallen in love with him. He knows it. She knows it. Why not get involved?? It's like she thinks she's going to wake up one morning and he's going to be a different person. They are already involved for all practical purposes...just not sleeping together. I just didn't get it. I know the author needed conflict to keep these two apart, but this just didn't work for me. I could even almost buy it if she was flat-out anti-marriage, especially with her parents history, but she'd been engaged to the abusive jerk, so she obviously believes that marriage can work.

Can you tell? This was a huge sticking point for me because it was the main conflict for the entire book.

That and there are a few details in the book that just didn't make sense to me....
*The whole "I love you" scene from Lexi...or should I say scenes? Because it happens twice and the second time around, it's written in the book like the first never happened.
*And did I miss it?? I don't think we ever got to hear the verdict on the murder trial for the ex. Surely it was in there and I just somehow skimmed over it when it was late and I was reading because that was kind of a huge part of the book.

It's just the little details that can ruin a book.

BUT OMG, I maintain that I love this series. I know...right?!? But this group of friends are such likable characters (yes, even Josh and Lexi...I did really like them). I really like all the characters and I love the group dynamic between them. There were a couple of new characters introduced in this book that I loved and I cannot wait for Marisa and Luc's book.

Cheryl Douglas tears at the heart strings again in the second installment of her ‘Nashville Nights’ series. Fearless, another dramatic romance, uncovers the painful past of Lexie and the future hopes and dreams of Josh…will they fit together? Will they be able to blend their issues with their future plans? One thing is for sure: they’re deeply in love and have been for a long time.

Josh is a third degree black belt in martial arts and Lexie is a driven real estate investor. She is the sister in law of country music super star Trey Turner and Josh is one of his bodyguards. Despite the fact that everyone in their circle is helping them to be happy together, their love at times seems one-sided. Lexie is in love with Josh but doesn’t express it well. Josh on the other hand is sometimes overzealous in his expression, scaring her away.

A wrench is thrown in when Lexie finds herself being followed by a stalker connected to her past, causing Josh to become understandably overprotective of her. Lexie acts like she’ll have none of it. It seems Lexie’s own pride and independence gets in the way…even when she needs Josh the most.

In my opinion, Fearless didn’t have the deep emotional drama that Shameless did, however it was still an enjoyable story.

Some of the exchanges between Josh and Lexie, especially when she was being particularly stubborn, were quite memorable.

Here are a few excerpts I’d like to share:

“Do you want to get married and have a kid because you want a do-over?” Mike asked. “I don’t know,” he said honestly, looking at his kids. “I’m not gonna lie to you. I wish I could make up for all the mistakes I made with you and your mom.”

“That’s the wrong reason to get married, Dad. You should be getting married because you’re in love. And if you want to have a kid, great, but don’t do it because you think you have to prove you’re a good dad. You’ve already proven that to us.”

He raised his eyebrows. “Is that so? He couldn’t have been much of a lover.”
“On a scale of one to ten, he was a seven. Not great, not bad.” He grinned, revealing a flash of white teeth. “You shouldn’t be wasting your time on a seven, Lexi. Let me show you what a ten feels like.”

Josh watched him climb the stairs, envisioning his descent down the stairs, headfirst. “You need to get rid of that guy, or I’m gonna do it for you.”

Mark saved her from having to reply. “Put a shirt on man. What do you think this is, a brothel?”
Josh chuckled and fisted his shirt in his hand. “I didn’t even know they had those anymore. And to think I spent all those years in law enforcement. I guess you would know though, since you have to pay for it.”

Nicely done Cheryl Douglas! I look forward to reading the next book in the ‘Nashville Nights’ series.

Original Review Posted @Insightful Minds Reviews

For some reason, this is the second series that I have come across in the past month that has been written about my hometown. I must say I am quite excited about this small fact. Reading about books that are written in a place that I know like the back of my hand, makes everything about this book so much more vivid to me as I am reading it. It's like I can picture exactly what everything is and not have to "imagine" it, you know? Aside from that tiny detail, there are so many reasons as to why this book just did it for me.

Lexi. She reminds me so much of me that it's just a little bit uncanny. Here you have this amazing strong women who is so driven in her quest to create this life so different from her past, that she doesn't realize she is letting her past run her present. In an effort to move on, she has go go back and face the biggest, most horrible thing that happened to her, which could also put her right in harms way. Along for the ride just happens to be the one man her heart can't forget about, Josh Cooper.

Josh is pretty amazing in his own right. Being the body guard to her sisters famous husband means that Lexi sees alot of him. Josh knows his heart wants Lexi, but having been told that she doesn't want to settle down with a family, his heart also knows that Lexi is off limits if he has any hopes of getting married and raising kids again. Of course, the heart wants what the heart wants and after some amazingly awesome "adult time" - you really can't keep emotions in check.

Watching the two of them battle their inner demons as well as the outer ones had me rooting for them as well as wanting to give them both a good swift kick! The flow of this story was perfect. I honestly didn't see some of the twist coming, but they fit right in with the way the book was going. I laughed an awful lot with this book - but I must admit that it made me tear up just a little bit too. Then again, most good books do! Josh and Lexi pull at your heart strings in this one, but you just can't help being on their team!

Aside from those two, this book had family dynamic out the ying yang. I LOVED Josh's twin boys. I about died laughing every time one of them opened their mouths. Talk about mature for their age! I can only hope my daughter has that kind of smarts when she is 16! Sheesh! You will not be disappointed in this book and I cannot wait for the 3rd installment!

Lexi and Josh are Nashville's own Romeo and Juliet. They both love each other, but they can never be together because Josh wants the white picket fence with a wife and more kids, while Lexi has been traumatized by her past and has no interest in making any sort of commitment.
After being such a fan of Shameless, the first book in this series, I hate to say I was a little turned off by Fearless but I have to. I love the characters Cheryl Douglas has created in the Nashville Nights series and I was hoping Lexi and Josh would end up together from the moment I started this book. However, I must say that I was rather frustrated by the constant flip-flopping of who wanted what becuase it seemed to change so often. What I thought would be a major plotline, the mysterious Mark, turned out to be a brief pitstop on the highway of Josh and Lexi's misunderstandings and miscommunications. It was still a good story and I'm definitely going to keep reading this series because I just HAVE to, but this one did not measure up to Shameless for me.

After falling in love with the first book Shameless in this series I couldn't wait to read the second. I think the thing I love the most about these books is that the main male characters are older men and that there is still a chance for love for people who are older and have children. No matter the age of the children.

I have to say I loved Josh in this book and how he's not afraid to wear his heart on his sleeve. Josh is open about what he wants in life and where he wants his next relationship to go. I love that he cares about his friends as much as his family.

I do have to say though Lexi was kind of a tough character to like. I was really pulling for her and wanting to like her. I Do love the fact that she's a strong and independent woman and has made a life and name for herself. Even from the up bringing her and her sister Sierra came from. But there were times she frustrated me.

So unfortunately, I started this series with Ashley and Derek's story and am backtracking now to the first books. As a backstory to the other book, it actually leaves me a little perplexed. I know this is Josh and Lexi's story, but Ashley, Mike and Jay, and Derek also have pieces in here. I didn't entirely connect all the personality traits from here to the other book. I'm sure I'd feel differently if I'd read these in order.

Taking this on its own merits, it's just not one of my favorites. I really like all the characters in this series but felt this story got a little choppy with everything the author was trying to include. The part of the storyline with Mark seemed to just be a device to introduce Derek to the series. Jay takes a big role here with Mike mainly silent. I guess my issue is, and again probably because I read this out of order, for me, Josh and Lexi sort of took backstage to the supporting characters and myriad storylines going on.

2.5 out of 5 stars

I have a love/hate relationship with this book. There are so many things I enjoy about this series, but at the same time I'm skimming more than reading because of the author's tendency to be repetitive.

Fearless is Lexi and Josh's story. They were not compatible and I just couldn't find it in me to root for this couple. The hero was great, but the heroine wasn't particularly likeable and her complete change of views wasn't that believable to me either.

To summarize, I wasn't engaged in this book as much as I wanted to be, but I'm going to give Ms. Douglas another try.

Oh, JOSH!!! What a man!! Poor Lexi to have grown up and lived with such fears. Strength sure cost her. So glad to see Josh try to break through her well constructed walls. I really enjoyed the glimpse into the types of men Josh's boys will grow up to be as well. A good man can raise good boys to be good men!! Truly enjoying this series. Glad to find a series I can enjoy that has lots of books already written!! Onto book 3!

I enjoyed the book. I think it's a good story. I disagree with one of the previous reviews written. I think it's a totally believable story. It happens everyday with best friends falling in love with one another, but one can't give the other what they need. I liked Lexi's story and I really related to her, but I hated that it took her so long to get her act together for Josh. I can't wait to read the rest of the series.

A good follow up to the first book but again the characters weren't fully developed. In the first book there is no hint that they are aware of each other. In fact Josh was dating Marisa. It was quite sudden that they were in love and unable to live without each other. I also didn't understand why she wanted a platonic relationship only to continued to put herself in the position to hurt Josh because he wanted more.

Lexi has been through hell and doesn’t trust herself not to end up there again, so she decides she will never be in a relationship with a man, no kids or marriage for her. Her best friend changes all that. She finds herself constantly comparing all her dates to Josh and they are coming up short. Her sex life is lacking something fierce. 3.5 stars. Slightly better than Trey's but not exactly my favorite.

But I do enjoyed reading it. There are some parts where I rolled my eyes and dying to skip it but I stand my ground and finished it anyway.

This author starts writing better. Looking forward to read the next installment of this series.

Not as good as the third book in the series. It seems both books had the exact same premise, just reversed. I did really like Josh though and thought the Chris angle was interesting. But I did feel like some things wrapped up a little too easily and without much fanfare...

Lexi had been through a lot of crap and her life and it was beautiful watching a romance form with Josh and herself. I thought the novel was great, I can't believe Josh's ex wife cheated on him with one of his friends. Josh seemed like such an amazing guy as a character.

I couldn't get over the fact that she trusted a stranger over a friend, she even told that stranger secrets she hadn't told her friends, and allow the stranger to travel with her. For a supposedly intelligent woman, she showed poor common sense.

I loved the storyline, but I got sooo tired of reading how Josh wanted a relationship and Lexie didn't. If you took all that blah blah blah repetitive stuff out, I bet you'd cut the length of the book by 1/3rd. That part was just over done.

Overall the book was ok, I liked it. But the Heroine didn't make me like her in the least. Too wishy-washy and selfish and unreasonable. I loved Josh's twins, even if they acted more like 17-18 yo boys not barely 16 yo.

Although I've enjoyed other books by this author, I guess this series is not for me. I found Lexi annoying and a flake. I liked josh a lot in the beginning blue even he started to get on my nerves because of interactions with Lexi. The second half of the book felt rushed and thrown together.
