Love Story

Rate this book
Claudio Roman is a world-famous tenor and perhaps even more well-known lothario. His life is the envy of men in all walks of life, until a fateful random attack leaves him a shell of his former self. Now, three years later and no longer performing opera, he is still a singer in very high demand―but he knows he can’t be too careful about his security. Women still fawn over him too, so it is hard to understand why, when in need of a new aide and publicist to travel and be with him night and day, he would hire a small, average-looking woman who he will later compare to a sparrow. Laura is surprised the morning after her twenty-sixth birthday party when she is called into the boss’s office and offered the job of accompanying Claudio Roman on his singing engagement―effective immediately. Hesitant at first, she accepts the opportunity and throws herself into it with all the professionalism she can bring. Soon becoming the only one Claudio requests from the agency, her dedication to making sure that Claudio has everything he needs at all times endears her to the singer. She takes her position so seriously, in fact, that she sees the opportunity to play her sincerity against his cynicism and bring him the hope he gave up long ago. As Laura desperately searches for ways to restore his confidence and stature as a premiere opera performer, she awakens feelings in Claudio he thought were lost forever.

This is a re-read in part because of a 2023 book challenge prompt to read a book by an author with the same name as you (and finding an author with the same first name as mine is hard) and it fit with the December 2023 romance challenge. What I wrote previously still applies. This is such a sweet HEA story. It's very PG too!
******************************************************
Enchanting love story. I chose this book as part of my 2020 book challenge: read a book by an author who shares your name. Since I don’t exactly have a common name, it took a while to find this book and I am grateful for finding it. It was a delightful read and while the title is exactly what the story line is about, I still didn’t know what to expect. The book centers around a famous tenor who has lost his sight due to a freak accident and who still desires to sing opera (think “Me Before You”). Through the tenacity of a publicist who falls for him, he gets an operation he refused years before and sight is restored in one eye. Then comes the complication - not one to be a spoiler I will let you guess. Your heartstrings are pulled every which way! The author uses lyrics from famous classical pieces to give expression to the love theme and to contrast with how the mundane sometimes stifles us from seeing or experiencing love. But the conceit of using La Traviata (think of Dumas’s book, The Lady of the Camellias, or the syrupy movie, Camilla, starring Greta Garbo - tragic heroine and cad lover) adds another layer to the story - almost a story within a story - and your heartstrings are being so tightly pulled at this point you think the anguish will never end! The story is set predominantly in Paris which adds another level of enchantment to the book. Thoroughly enjoyed the read.

Simply put ...A Very Romantic Love Story! It was just lovely. The whole book had an almost poetic feel to it. The characters were beautiful. I loved the whole story. Generally a lovely, feel good book.

**SPOILER ALLERT**

I loved the whole book until the end! I felt completely jipped!! I waited so long for them to say loving words to each other and profess their love but we never got it. I felt completely and utterly let down. I so desperately wanted Claudio to tell Laura that he loved her and he thought she was beautiful to him. I needed those words!! And also for Laura to say all she felt for Claudio. Man I was so upset. I know the author wanted it to be romantic and poetic and let our minds imagine it....but seriously?! Come on...that's why we read...so we can read and see that stuff!! If I just wanted to imagine it I wouldn't be reading! Anyway overall a lovely romantic story until the unfulfilling ending.

Genre: realistic fiction, romance
Summary: Laura is a publicist who works with up and coming artists. For some unknown reason, she is attached to help the blind singer, Claudio who is the hottest thing since heatpacks. While she brushes off his flirtations, she falls madly in love with him. The question is, will he love her back?
Response: The main reason why I got this book is because I had a voucher from Amazon and this was the best option. It was ok. Not super impressed with the story, but it was a nice read. It was a translation from the French original which gave it a very lyrical feel. The words were almost like song lyrics.

Age old Man meets Woman tale , set in modern day France. Interesting translation too. I only wish I knew how to read French, because I have a feeling this would've read better in the original language.

Ele cantou Laura.

I didn't know what to expect from "Love Story" by author Janine Boissard. The story line concept--wounded "hero" redeemed by the love of a good woman with unconventional beauty--is not new, but here it still seemed fresh. Perhaps the opera world setting featuring a superstar tenor enhanced the romance and added some intriguing shadings to the characters. While I do have a great appreciation for opera, I am still just a fan, not a in-depth aficionado. I am still simply in awe by the power of the human voice in all its vocal varieties, and I could easily imagine myself as spellbound as the heroine as she lost herself in listening. Laura Vincent is the daughter of a baker in the small village of Villedoye, near Normandy, France. As petite and dark as her older sister Agatha is tall and fair, Laura, the "little one", is the down-to-earth smarts to her sister's dreamy beauty. Encouraged to become a teacher, Laura instead earns two degrees, one in English and the other in literature, and then moves to Paris to work in the music and dance industry as a promoter. Laura is chosen by her employer to take on a very special assignment: assistant to world-renowned tenor, Claudio Roman. Blinded by a vicious attack during an attempt to steal his car, Claudio none-the-less lives life much as he pleases, feeding his appetites as he chooses. Laura's practicality, sweet nature, and lack of worldliness are much in contrast to the pleasure-seeking lifestyle lead by Claudio. However, they become friends, finding common ground while enjoying their differences. Claudio comes to rely on Laura, and she begins to see that there is more to him than his playboy persona. His attitudes toward women were shaped by his controlling, discouraging mother and the misery of his long-suffering father. Laura's happier family life, despite her constant comparisons to her sister, is quite a contrast to Claudio's childhood memories. When the chance comes for Claudio to undergo surgery which will restore sight in one eye and give him back much of what he lost, Laura is determined that he will go through with the operation. They have now become more than friends, and her fear that he will reject her when he actually sees her leads her to make a heartbreaking decision. Will the eyes of love see the truth of hearts? "Love Story" is just that, a story of love at different levels, both selfless and self-serving, and it reads very quickly to its conclusion. I enjoyed the book, and I would have loved to see the story line expanded, allowing more time to be spent with the characters and their lives, especially in such a charming setting.

Back cover:
" If she was beautiful...if he wasn't blind...
But Laura isn't beautiful and Claudio is blind.
He's a celebrity, and she his guide. And beyond any hope, Laura will fall in love by the marvelous tenor, admired all around the world. Because his voice, between cinism and despair, sings the beauty of a world that he cant see anymore. She guesses his thoughts and love him without hoping anything in return. One night, without thought, he offers her the moon, but it's is she who wants to give it to him:
She convince's him to go through an operation that he's always refused to do, and one that has the chance of giving him fifty por cent of his vision back, and a greatest dream _ to play on stage the role of Alfredo, in La Traviata. Knowing for sure that on the day that Claudio will finaly be able to see her, he will no longer need her, Laura is ready to sacrifice her love, for love.
But will Claudio, accept that decision?"

This was a book that i really liked to read, although it starts on the very "used" premisse, of two sisters: one beautiful and one who isn't.
Or is she? And does it matter?

Claudio is an opera singer who after an attack becomes blind and is forced to give up the opera he so loved and concentrate of his singing alone. Because of his good looks, he does not have a problem enjoying women, but he is but a shadow of the man he used to be before the attack and therefore he moves from one woman to the next.

Laura is a successful publicist albeit average looking. When she is offered the position to go on tour with Claudio and take over as his publicist, she is suspicious. She shouldn't be as she soon finds out that the reason his last publicist left in the middle of the tour was because she had fallen in love with Claudio, who did not correspond her feelings.

Laura becomes his publicist and this is the beginning of a beautiful relationship. With her professionalism, Laura helps build his confidence and in the process the professional relationship deapens.

The book is beautifully translated from French (the translator is credited as co-author as it should) and the plot is so well developed you can not stop reading. Loved it.

This was a book that was simply poetic to me. It’s unlike me, but I think I loved this book so much purely because of the way the story is told as opposed to the story itself. Does that make any sense? The book was originally in French, so perhaps that was a contributing factor.

Simply put, this was a story full of romance, hope and music. Everything about it was vivid: the description of the scenery, the music and the emotion. Of course, this was often due to Claudio’s need, but I was consistently transported to other worlds. I was so inspired by the story that I went to go see an opera after finishing the book! I’d highly recommend this as an easy and relaxing read that is perfect for the couch-traveler.

Who should read it? Fans of music, France and romance!

This book was originally released in French in 2003 and has only recently been translated into English and released here as a Kindle book. I truly enjoyed the story. As the title suggests, it truly is a beautiful "Love Story" about a famous singer and his publicist.

**SPOILER ALERT**
I did somewhat question Laura's sudden up and leaving Claudio simply because of David's comment that Claudio wouldn't need her anymore if the operation was successful. It seemed to me like she inflicted a lot more pain that way. It also seemed a little unrealistic that she would move, change her job, etc. all on a moments notice just because she had such low self esteem? that she couldn't believe that he would ever truly love her.

I love a good love story. I would have given this book more stars if it hadn't used my least favorite swear word so many times.
In the beginning I was a little put off by how quickly Laura the main character fell in love with Claudio. It was almost love at first "listen" and seemed more like infatuation with a famous singer, but towards the end when we find out that he loves her too I was riveted and kept wanting to read more. A blind opera singer...never read that genera before :)
Also a little different for me was that this book was originally French so the main characters live in France, but don't worry, it's all in English ;)

Overly romantic, almost mawkish but with some poignant moments. I didn't relate to the heroine's self-sacrificial approach to "love" and found it tiresome at times. Also wasn't crazy about the temperamental hero who was given to sharp and sudden shifts in mood from rage to passion to despair. Lots of interesting turns of phrase that kept me engaged though. There were many references to Barbara Cartland novels, which I think may have influenced this author's style of romance: the innocent, somewhat plain young woman who is bewildered by sudden love for a stormy, dark hero whose love for her she cannot quite make herself believe.

Wtf? No final as coisas compõem-se mas apeteceu-me entrar pelo livro dentro e acordá-la para a vida!

What a beautiful story. I really enjoyed this book. I actually listened to this on audiobook at work. Note to self: Don't read this in public. I was trying not to cry throughout the last half of the book. My eyes were tearing up and my throat was choking with emotion. I really wanted to give this 5 STARS, but I just couldn't because I wish there was more interaction with the two main characters in the second half of the book. But, lovely story none the less!!!!

A beautifully written love story in Paris. I loved the poetic writing and the way Boissard let the reader imagine what Laura and Clauido were feeling. On another note, I felt Claudio's language was an unneeded crudeness and it was unbelievable that Laura would fall for a man that spoke in that manner.

Overall I really enjoyed the book.

I read a few of Boissard's books in the 1990s and remember really liking them. I remember thinking how well she described the depths of emotions. But this was terrible--treacly, repetitive, no character depth. I can't believe this is the same author.

This was so much better than what I expected. The translation was just a tiny bit stilted. French to English can be hard to translated, especially because French language nuances are so delicate.

I loved the plot and how it played out.

Finally, it became a love story.

All in all, I liked this book. Like many other books, however, this story got a little repetitious with the misunderstanding that went on and on in their minds. I enjoyed the changes in locations.
