Open Government Data: The Book by Joshua Tauberer is a practical and insightful guide for anyone seeking to understand, access, and leverage publicly available government data. Tauberer combines technical expertise with clear explanations, making complex topics accessible to readers ranging from policy enthusiasts to developers and researchers.
The book covers the foundational principles of open government data, explores methods for retrieving and using datasets, and highlights real world examples of transparency, civic engagement, and data driven decision making. Its strength lies in bridging theory and practice readers not only learn why open data matters, but also how to apply it effectively for research, analysis, or public accountability.
Open Government Data is particularly valuable for civic tech advocates, students of public policy, data scientists, and anyone interested in leveraging government datasets for social good. The text provides both a roadmap for newcomers and a reference for those already navigating the open data landscape
An excellent primer that covers every aspect of the Open Government Data movement. I learned a lot, and have great admiration for those who work to free 'our' data from government sources, making it available for the benefit of all of us. Well worth reading for anyone interested in the subject, and you should be interested, it's your data.
A decent book on open data back in the early days. We have moved beyond standing up data sets. I would like to read more real world case studies on what works and what does not in terms of information usability and citizen engagement.
