Actual rating: 1.5 Rounded up to 2 because THIS BOOK MEANS THE SERIES IS OVER.

I have this beautiful nail polish with an interesting texture. It looks really cool, but wearing it is a different story. I have contact lenses, you see, and while an awesome sandy texture may LOOK good, if you've ever had sand in your eyes, you know it's fucking painful. Such is my experience every time I remove my contacts, it's like sand rubbing against my eyeballs, and yet I keep on using that damn polish anyway, and will probably finish the bottle at the expense of scarring my corneas.

Such has been my experience with the Watersong series; it looks attractive, but the experience has been all sorts of terrible, and for some damn reason I am compelled to finish this series despite knowing better. I can't guarantee that it won't damage my eyes, either...it IS over 500 pages. Good god. And that's not to mention the painful experience of actually reading it.

I can hear some of the complaints now. "Khanh...you fucking idiot, if you hate the series so much, why are you reading it? WHY ARE YOU SUCH A HATER?!" Simple. I am always drawn to siren/mermaid type stories, especially with the lure of combined mythology. This is also an YA series, so it's easier to finish, unlike some of a much grander scale on my To-Be-Read pile *cough*GameofThrones/Outlander/Fever*cough*. Considering how long this book was, though, I can't say the experience of reading it has been particularly easy, much less so given the poor quality of writing, the completely senseless plot, and the utter mess that comprises the book and series overall. And that's not to mention what a mockery the book made of siren mythology and Greek/Romance mythology in general.

Within this series, some books have been better than others, but that's not saying much. It's like eating maggoty bread, some pieces of bread may have a few less maggots in it, but that's not to say eating it is a more enjoyable experience.

Enough with the overextended metaphors, I should probably give a few reasons to justify my disdain and hatred for this series. To keep it short (ha!), I will limit it to a top 10.

In no particular order of perceived pain:

1. The Roman goddess Diana: also known as Demeter!: Lest we forget who Diana is:
"Diana is a Roman goddess of hunting and the moon and werewolves or something. She’s this strong feminist, and certain Wiccans worship her.”
ARE YOU FUCKING SERIOUS?

Btw: Horace = the Egyptian god Horus

For those who missed the joke: Diana and Demeter are two completely unrelated goddesses...

2. The sirens: “You little bitch,” Penn said, smiling wider. “Bring it.”
I referred to them in my last review as The Real Housewives of Orange County. This has not changed. Cattiness, bitchiness, hair-pulling, all still there. I am still amazed at the fact that they've managed to live all these millennium and only managed to kill each other a few times. I would have guessed the murderous turnover ratio within the sirens, at the rate in which they were going in these books, to be at least 100% (death ratio) every 3 weeks or so. I was so sick of the name-calling, the pure hatred between them. It's just common sense...if you're going to be spending a long, long time with someone, be it a friend, a life partner...you find someone you can fucking TRUST. Thea, Penn, & co. just seem to pick and choose who to become the next siren without reason at all. They end up hating each others' guts...I just can't understand it.

3. Liv: "Penn told you that we wanted you to keep an eye on Harper. But instead of doing that, you attacked her, then went on a spree and killed three people, including a psych teacher."
Ah, Liv, a.k.a. the worst little siren that ever lived. The sirens aren't exactly the most inconspicuous characters...which is pretty stupid. I mean, if you're trying to survive, it's best to blend in. The original sirens don't exactly do the best job of that, but man, Liv is just something else. She makes the other sirens look like quiet, well-behaved chameleons. She just kills/seduces whomever she feels like it. There's even less subtlety with this one.

4. Gemma & Harper: Dull as dishwater. I'll give the sirens some credit...they have personality. Gemma and Harper, the two biological sisters, and the two main characters in the book, have no personality, none. I can tell you that Gemma likes swimming, and Alex, she loves her family, and she hates being a siren. But all that you can learn from the first book, because there is nothing, absolutely nothing that you can glean from her character and her mind and her thoughts besides for her single-minded purpose of finding the key to breaking her curse of being a siren, and meanwhile, HOW TO DENY HER CARNAL SIREN URGES *clutches pearls*. Oh, my goodness goshness.

I stand corrected, Harper does have a personality: that of a middle-aged suburbian housewife in Kansas. But I really shouldn't say that; it's a discourtesy to housewives everywhere to be compared to someone so dull.

5. Alex: I should rename my doormat to "Alex." Yes, Gemma manipulated you and your mind, she almost made you go permanently Lady-Gaga with her siren song. But oh well, time to forgive at the drop of a hat! Oh, and you should probably apologize to her, anyway, because---um. Because...

Whatever, just apologize.

6. Nathalie: I fucking hate it when brain damage = CHILDLIKE BEHAVIOR. It's fucking dumb, it's fucking ignorant, and it is fucking offensive.

7. Daniel: OH NOES I HAVE TO HAVE SEX WITH SOMEONE ELSE FOR THE SAKE OF MY BELOVED GIRLFRIEND. It's all for your own good, baby, really! I'm not even gonna tell you that a manipulate bitch of a siren has her claws into me and is using me because then you'll just make me stop listening to her and put myself at risk. And I really love you, so I have to do this. FOR US! I'm thinking of you as she's straddling me, really.

8. Professor Kipling Pine: looking past the absolutely Gary Stu name, he's also a young stud. A full professor at an university by his early 30s who looks like a young Indiana Jones. "A history teacher who used to be an archaeologist," who happens to know archaic languages, can identify Aramaic from Phoenician, etc. Man, where was he when I went to college? Most of my professors were in their 40s, at least, and none of them were into steampunk. So sad.

9. Red Bull: a crucial plot device

10. Plot & writing: nonsensical, full of holes. The book was also completely plot-driven, leaving no room for character holes, and I ended up being absolutely bored with the entire book, despite all that was taking place. There was no dull moment, but there was plenty of dullness. I read it, but it did not grip me at all. The writing is purely YA, there's nothing beautiful about it, it's easy to read, and that is the best I can say for the writing.

11. Deus ex machi ---oh, wait, I promised to limit it to a list of 10.

Thank the gods, it's over.

4.5 actually.
First, let me thank both Edelweiss and especially St. Martin's Griffin for allowing me to read an e-galley of this book. Now, can I start telling you how much I loved this book?! I have to say what an awesome way to end a series! There was action, there was still romance, there were twists and turns, there was more details about the background of the sirens, and I even found the re-telling of the story of Persephone to be very unique. As I've said in the reviews for both Lullaby and Tidal, this series, just got better, and better, and the end didn't disappoint!

Well I did it.
I finished the book.
Onto the review, I suppose.
The nice thing about reading books that you either really like or dislike is that you have a lot to say when you're done with them. You aren't left somewhere in the middle (ahem,Unearthly) in which you don't really have a say in things. I went into the Watersong series with high hopes, watched as they got dashed across the pavement in a gorey mess, and then skimmed through the last 50 pages because holy shit, I never did care, and especially now I REALLY don't care.
SO anyways, Gemma and company are still under duress trying to turn her back into a normal teenager when in fact they should be focusing on how to destroy Penn and Liv and have a super awesome siren team killing horrible people. (Hell, Thea, Gemma, Harper, and Daniel could do it. In fact I would have liked the story 100x better if that's what had happened.) Penn's new little crony is not worth even complaining about, given how flat and stereotyped her character was.
There were so many scenes in which we were assaulted with dialogue of things that did not matter. I think an entire 10 page chapter was dedicated to how Gemma and Alex fell in love. SNORE. BOO. HISS. I don't care. I don't think anybody cares at this point.
Penn is a fucking psycho slut. Now, let me just say that I'm totally aware of what "slut shaming" is. Do you know what I think a slut is? Someone who uses sex to hurt people (and not in the wonderful BDSM way). As an advantage. So she's a slut who manipulates and almost RAPES Daniel- which doesn't just hurt him mentally AND PHYSICALLY as we later see, but Harper as well.
I'm so glad this is done and over with. Thanks to Walmart for giving this to me for 10.00 instead of 17.99. You're a real bro.

Warning: This will be very long, there may be spoilers for anyone who hasn't read the other three books, and some of it may be ranty. I have very mixed feelings about this book. Read at your own caution.

What I liked:
-Thea. She was my favorite part of this book, and probably my favorite part of the series overall. At first, she was just kind of there, not really doing or saying much throughout the story. But she was gradually given a very distinct personality and a tragic back story, and she quickly became my favorite character. I loved the choices she made in the end.
-Gemma. She really, really grew on me in this book. To me, she finally stopped being a whiny, boring, flat character. Instead, she became this badass who wasn’t afraid to us her siren powers to save the people she loved. She fought and clawed her way through this book, refusing to go down without a fight. The fight scenes with Gemma were probably the most exciting part of this book, and honestly, when I first started it, I didn’t think she had it in her to keep fighting. I almost thought she’d just give up.

What I disliked:
-Greek Mythology. One thing I hate more than anything in books is when authors butcher my beloved Greek Mythology, and Elegy did just that. So, we know that the sirens were created by the Greek goddess of the harvest—Demeter—after they fail to protect Demeter’s daughter Persephone, and Persephone is abducted, raped, and murdered. This does not happen in Greek Mythology. Persephone is abducted by Hades, Lord of the Underworld, becomes his bride, and lives with him for eternity. It’s bad enough that her story was twisted, but it gets worse. The whole Greek Mythology element was the main reason I enjoyed this series, since it has always been a huge love of mine, and it ended being the worst part of the book for me. It brought nothing new to the story and it actually made me so angry I considered not finishing it. If you’re a mythology fanatic like me, stay away.
-Daniel. I really loved his character throughout the first three books, but honestly, it felt like he lost some of his magic and charm in this one. He wasn’t the same character I loved before, and since he was one of my favorites, that really made this book less enjoyable than I thought it would be.
-Penn and Liv. For being the two major antagonists of this book and the series, they were awfully catty and bitchy. There wasn’t a whole lot of substance to them, even though Penn gradually got a bit of back story and personality. For the most part, Penn was just the “top bitch” that flaunted her body and power every chance she got. And Liv was just a violent psychopath that I didn’t ever really take seriously. She was just crazy, and not in a fleshed out, detailed, believable way.
-Length and pace. This book—at 542 pages—was a beast. It took me way too long to finish, because I just didn’t really get into it all that much. I went days at a time without even picking it up, and I didn’t have the motivation to read. I honestly didn’t rally care about what happened to most of the characters. I was never really drawn into this book, and it was kind of boring. There were unbearably long chunks where nothing happens, and I felt like a lot of it could have been edited out.
-POV. There were so many freaking point of views in this book I couldn’t take it. I hate it when there are two or more point of views, but this one had like six! Gemma, Harper, Daniel, Marcy, Alex, and Thea—I think I got them all. It felt like a lot of these little four or five page long chapters were just added in there to draw the story out and make it longer. Towards the end, while the huge climax was taking place, it kept switching to some boring point of view that didn’t matter, and that was awful. The point the entire series had been building up to kept getting interrupted, and at that point, I just didn’t care.
-The ending.

Overall, this was by far the worst book in the series. I was so disappointed when I reached the last page, and was left thinking, “That’s it? Four books…and that’s all I get?” I loved many of the characters, but the pace was all off and there was so much unnecessary filler, and then there's the butchered Greek Mythology. If you’re a hardcore fan of Amanda Hocking or the Watersong series, you’ll probably love it, but I wouldn’t recommend it for anyone else, unless you really love sirens—like crazy love them. I’m just glad it’s over. 2.0

There were times where I felt like this was the most ridiculous book I've read in a long time. I don't know how but the series only got worse with each book. This one was also way way too long. The first two books were the right length for this kind of easy read (300 pages or under it), the tird book was a bit over it, but this one was over 500 pages of stretched out plot and DRAMA. I enjoyed (a little) reading the first two, but the next two in the series were a disaster to me. Especially this one. Sometimes it seemed like a parody of a book even. There were some super serious and (supposedly) 'emotional' moments that made me laugh so hard at how ridiculous it all was. The whole Penn x Daniel thing was fucking ridiculous too , I couldn't take it seriously at all. The sirens were either bitchy or downright stupid. Gemma was uninteresting. Harper somewhat likeable. Daniel I still hated ever since book three. And Alex was just a doormat when it came to Gemma. Riddikulus, I say!

This book was just intense in nearly it's entirety.

Every character just felt to be in danger all the time and at some points I do admit I teared up a bit at how dire some of the character's situations. Daniel's particularly got to me, I do not know how he was able to keep mostly calm but you could still feel his panic and how he was trying to find things that were positive for his situation which wasn't a lot. I love him and Harper together I think because it is very simple and not over the top and have a destined/star-crossed element to it. They would also do anything to protect each other even if it meant they couldn't be together.

I have always loved Harper and Gemma's sibling relationship and how much they always try to help each other out especially in this book where they not only have to break the curse for themselves but want it for each other more than anything. Also how they stood by each other in the face of danger even though there odds weren't favorable. I like how they took most of the heroics and were not completely reliable on their significant others to rescue them if anything the girls were rescuing them.

The sirens were also much more frightening with the very unstable Liv in the mix. We also got really see how dangerous and strong Penn is and that she wasn't going to go down easy.

I absolutely enjoyed the Watersong series and would recommend to one and all if you want to see evil mermaids, sisterhood, a beach backdrop and with also romance in the mix.

29/07/13 Tidal has still left me in shock over what happened and has me more worried what is going to happen in this book. Penn don't you dare touch Daniel!

15/01/13 Wow. The third book isn't even out yet and we already have a cover for the forth!
Also the title has got me worried but curious of what is going to happen in these 2 books.

So excited :D

I feel like this book could of been WAY shorter. Actually, this series probably could of just been a duology. There was not a lot happening for the majority of this series. All I cared about was the curse and how to break it etc but even that was anti climatic. I thought there was going to be more to it.

Marcy was my favourite thing about the series but she wasn't appreciated enough. I want to read about her being this badass witch and her and Lydia forming this awesome friendship where they do magic spells, talk to spirits and are friends with Greek goddesses. How awesome does that sound??

I wanted some closure with Harper and Gemma's mum like what happened?? The last we heard she wasn't doing great and then we never heard anything else.

I didn't love this series. It was just very high school and it dragged on. I would of enjoyed this a lot more if I had read it when I was younger.

I got sucked into this book and couldn't stop reading it. I HAD to know what was going to happen next! The last 80 pages or so flew by, I couldn't get to the ending fast enough. This has become one of my favorite series now. I love reading books about strong female characters. As a girl it is definitely awesome to see that. I just wish I had more of it when I was growing up, but we have it now so that's wonderful!

I wasn't sure about these books when I first got them. I didn't think I would enjoy the mermaid/siren thing, but I actually really loved it. I got a little mad at Thea in this one. She annoyed me. She was older than Penn and she let Penn push her around for too long. I thought she would finally put Penn in her place, but she never did. I really did not like Liv. I enjoyed Lexi far more than I did Liv. She was too whiny and annoying. I wanted to rip her head off before she became a siren lol.

Anyway, if you enjoyed Trylle then you should definitely give this one a try! I am glad that I did!

I have three main issues with the final book in the Watersong series. 1: Don't tell me Daniel's birthday is a week before Labor Day and then tell me he's a Scorpio. Continuity! 2: I felt like the author brought in a bunch of new characters in this book and all of them served little to no purpose. Like she tried really hard to keep the reader guessing but it just wasn't working for me. 3: The fact that everyone got such perfect happy endings kinda makes me wanna vom. I'd call it Breaking Dawn syndrome. It's like all of this crazy life-threatening traumatic stuff happened and then everyone said "Gee, what a crazy summer, huh?" and went on with their lives.

When I saw this in the store, I was like "how the hell did the series go from being 300 pages each book to nearly 600 hundred?" And I gotta say, bigger is not better.

First off, I'm going to put this out there right now. This is one of those book series where the characters lose absolutely NOTHING in the end . The characters get everything they want and more.

On top of that, the characters haven't changed since book one. Gemma and Harper are still dull as freaking rocks; Alex is as interesting as a rug; Daniel is the ever perfect boyfriend that waits for his girlfriend to put out; and Penn is still a bitch. NONE OF THIS HAS CHANGED.

And I swear to Christ, if Gemma says how she doesn't want to be a monster and kill people one more time, I'll burn the book. Penn describes Gemma as "unbreakable"...I describe her as being a wussy little bitch that, clearly, is not willing to do anything to stay alive.

Every single problem in this series is solved in this final installment. I feel like I've just been reading the same book over and over again because the same problems are repeated every chapter. You know, just in case you missed it the first 50 times it was repeated in the chapter before.

Also, this book seemed to me to just be a longer version of Tidal. It's boring as hell. There is some action here and there, but overall I was bored with it and couldn't wait to be finished with it.

The last thing that really, really pissed me off while reading it was Amanda Hocking taking a shit all over Greek Mythology. DEMETER AND DIANA ARE COMPLETELY TWO DIFFERENT, UNRELATED GODDESSES GODDAMNIT!!!!!!!!

The series started out fun for me, really. I thought it was a fun series, but I have my limits. There's only so much stupidity I can take. I'm glad the series is over.

Well, I can honestly say this book (let's be honest, the entire series in general) did not live up to my expectations. I now feel I need to go back and reread the Trylle trilogy to see if it was actually any good after finishing this series.

Let's start with the characters. They are cliche and one dimensional. For a while, in perhaps the first or second book, there were a few of them that I actually liked. In the middle of the series, I found myself favoring different characters than in the beginning. But by the end, I hated them all. Most of them were whiny and bitching. The ones that weren't were annoying in their own ways.

Then we get to the plot. Sure, the whole siren thing is resolved, but it is pretty typical. Not a surprise in store there at all. And while this book is about 530 pages long, not much of it is actual, honest plot. Most of it is typical YA romance junk. With a group of teenagers and young 20s characters, especially a bunch of extraordinarily beautiful girls, I expected some of this. I even tolerated it for the first two books in the series. The third one got a little annoying, especially with the Penn/Daniel subplot. But, by goly, but the time we get to Elegy, it seems as if raging hormones are running amok. Everyone is making out and a lot of them are having sex (and it appears as if it is unprotected sex as well - not exactly a message I would want to be sending out to young girls, certainly not if I were raising a daughter). While I rolled my eyes at it in the third book, in Elegy it all just wanted to make be barf.

I definitely won't be adding the boxed set of this series to my collection. I will not even be borrowing it from the library to read again. I am going to tuck it safely away in a recess in the corner of my mind and pretend like I never read them. Hocking lost quite a bit of respect/admiration from me for this series.

The third book isn't even out yet and she has the cover for the fourth? I mean, I'm totally loving the cover for Elegy because it's absolutely gorgeous, but what I really need is for the third book to come out. Then I can read this epic one.
The title and the cover are making my thoughts go wild!

August 22nd, 2013 REVIEW:

I've just now come to realize that the Watersong series isn't always what I thought it would be. I don't know why I liked this series so much in the first place, but now I'm just kinda disappointed. I can only assume that Amanda Hockings's books just aren't for me.
In Elegy, it seemed like all the wrong things happened and it all seemed so...stupid.
I had such high hopes for this series, but my hatred for Gemma overpowered all of it.
So, it's safe to say, I didn't like Elegy. Shocker, right?
But nothing was right.
Daniel lost all sexiness in this book.
Harper acted so lame.
Gemma was a total dimwit, weak and stupid.
Alex was just Alex. A disappointment.

This is probably the last Amanda Hocking I'm ever going to read.

The thrilling, horrifying conclusion of the Watersong series. Will Gemma and Harper finally find a way to break the curse? It is full of betrayal, decisions and girl power.

Best book out of the series, despite the predictable end. I was finally able to connect to the characters because Hocking finally gave the love stories detail and depth. This book was still rushed and hasty in terms of the writing but it had the most description and detail.

I still stand by what I have said in the past. This series had so much potential, it didn't fully live up to what the wondrous storyline was capable of, however it did improve as he series went on and that was nice.

The books in this series also have quite captivating, beautiful covers and that also helps :p

I'm glad that this series has finally come to an end.
It is amazing & I enjoyed it so much!!
The only thing is that sometimes I felt like the book was dragging on & it didn't really need to be a 4 book series.
Overall, I loved reading it & I loved the storyline.
Also, there couldn't be a better ending to the watersong series

This is the most fun series and I am so sad that it's over. On the plus side, the last book was a complete brick (almost 550 pages) and that gave me plenty of time to say goodbye to Gemma, Alex, Harper, Daniel and everyone else. (Yes, even Penn.)

I loved the mythology of this book and hope that we can visit a different story in this world. (In this land of gods and goddesses and presumed-to-be mythical creatures, you can't tell me that there's not spinoff potential.)

The pacing in this last book is perfect. We get answers but of course those only tend to lead to more questions. Even so, it serves to keep the reader engaged without leading to frustration and/or boredom. (I think we all know the books that lead to the reader losing all interest because the author just keeps piling on question after question without providing answers.)

I enjoyed her Trylle series but the Watersong books show how much she's grown as an author. This series is just fantastic and I can't think of any way to improve it.

Highly recommended. (Especially now, when you can read all the books in a row.)

*SPOILER ALERT* Meh. I expected more from this book. A lot more. First of all it could have been 200 pages less. I found it dragged and was really annoyed by most of it rehashing the same siren threats and character angsts over (and over and over) again. Also, Amanda Hocking should NOT write sex scenes. Just...No. The wording was SOOO awkward, it reminded me of one of the cheap harlequin novels. If you're not comfortable writing it, readers can tell. Should have just stuck to make out scenes. The ending and "solution" to breaking the siren curse was incredibly transparent and obvious. I wanted to hit the characters over the head they were so clueless about it. Really a disappointing ending to what had been a good interesting series.

I AM SO SAD THAT THIS IS OVER. I actually fell in love with the characters the most in this one. Marcy was definitely my favorite character.... She was so hilarious and actually made me laugh out loud so many times (which almost never happens when I read). My favorite boy was Daniel and my favorite sister was Gemma and my favorite siren was definitely Thea. This was such a great series. Thank you Amanda Hocking for giving us this world :)

On a side note, wow that was a weird way to write a review. Yeah.

Surprisingly, the last book was the best. It took a few chapters but then I was hooked. There was much more mythology in this I've, more explanation and more action/adventure.
My only grumble was how drawn out the Penn obsession thing was. It added atleast 100 agonizing pages to cringe through.

Otherwise, great conclusion! I'm glad I made it this far!!!

This book is one of the worst things I've ever read. I don't even want to get to the mythology inaccuracies bc wtf do you mean Diana is roman for Demeter literally open just one book please. The book had no plot, exactly like the third book in the series, when I read the first one I like it so much and i wanted to know more about the curse and everything, the second book didn't have much plot but it seemed like it was leading to something: it wasn't. The third and fourth book tell you nothing, they one open more plot lines they don't finish. Thank god i finished the series, sad that a good concept was carried out like this lol

This got bumped to a 3 star about halfway through. The first part of this book wasn't necessary......the cattiness of the sirens that I could somewhat overlook in the first three books REALLY got to me with this one. The ending was decent though and went fairly fast. So glad I finished this series finally!

As I've said before, I'm a big fan of the Watersong series. It took me a long time to finish because I started reading from NetGalley, and picked up a TON of books from the library, and this final chapter of the quartet was put on the back burner. Then I realized it was due tomorrow.
Well, for my birthday present today, I stayed in and finished all 542 pages of the book. I loved the ending to series as a whole. It all comes full-circle, and it ends just perfectly. Despite Hocking still using the word "foxy" once or twice (I still hate that word for "sexy"... No one uses it!), Elegy left nothing to be desired.
Gemma and Harper have fought the siren curse for three books, and during the fourth they've both found love, and friendship, and know that they must finally take down Penn before she destroys all their lives. Talk about a sociopathic bitch: I don't think I've hated a character more. But I enjoy the close relationship between the sisters and their desperate desire to save Gemma, and rid her of siren bitches forever. I'm not going to spoil the series for anyone (but if you're reading this book, you've read the other three, obviously, so you know what's going on), but I will say that all books lead up to this one: the 542 pages fly by as you scramble along with the main characters, trying to break the scroll's unbreakable curse. And we finally meet Demeter, and she's justifiably pissed, still after thousands of years. Talk about holding a grudge! (I mean, the sirens didn't kill Persephone; they were just distracted when it happened...talk about not having closure!).
Anyway, if you're a fan of mythology, Sirens, or mermaids, these books are for you. Start with the first novel, Wake, and get lost in Hocking's comfortably casual prose. She writes like you're a best friend, and she leaves nothing out...she trusts you with the characters' feelings and thoughts, and you feel Harper's frustration and Gemma's anger. I'm tempted to try the Trylle series after this one...I'm a fan now.
And I dig the Siren myths...mermaids and Sirens are really fascinating, beautifully evil, and/or tragically cursed. Love it. Makes my life feel way less complicated. ;)
