Jethro Gibbs wrestles with the effects of anterograde amnesia following (I think) a case that went wrong. Since I'm not at all familiar with the episodes, I do find myself a little lost when certain events are mentioned. Gibbs goes through each team member's file and this helps me get acquainted with each one. I get the thrill of peeking into Jethro's thoughts concerning Tony, even though Jethro can't figure why he feels he can trust the younger man.
At this point, both men are still hiding their feelings for each other. Gibbs still thinks Tony is straight and so does the rest of the team. I'm not sure, myself, whether he's gay or bisexual at this point. I don't even know what Jethro is since he was married before.
Jethro decides to visit Tony at home, hoping to fill in the huge gaps in his memory. He can't even remember Abby! Even I remember Abby from what little I've caught of the TV series so I can sympathize with how disoriented Gibbs must be feeling. Tony is on his way to stay at his cabin in the boondocks somewhere and invites Gibbs along. For Tony, it'll be a time he can reflect on his issues and indulge in a little pity party; for Gibbs, it'll be a safe place where he can try and get more info from Tony to fill in the gaps and not worry about running into people he knows but can't remember.
During these few days holed up in Tony's cabin, they learn a lot about each other, stuff they never knew in the five years they'd worked together. Jethro's jealousy comes roaring out when the subject turns to Caleb, Tony's ex. And a whole lot more to absorb as Jethro learns from a nervous, closeted Tony that he is gay; and why Caleb isn't in his life anymore. I loved this section:)
Despite the repetitious phrases of 'green eyes meeting blue' (at every other page, it seems), I enjoyed this second installment very much. By the end of their stay at the cabin, Jethro has met Tony's foster family (and will meet more of them in the last couple of installments) and both men begin a tentative romance that would, predictably, overpower everything else in their lives. Yippee:D
There's sex but it comes late in the story. This installment is totally about the run-up to the start of the two men's relationship. Despite the lack of editing - hey, it's fanfic - the writing was solid, the story flowed well and despite my unfamiliarity with the episodes (I have no idea what the author is talking about in her 'author's note' re. the episode references) I could follow everything. I know enough from the trailers I'd caught and the few scenes I'd watched that Gibbs is a naturally taciturn guy, grouchy much of the time and the team members are intimidated by him. He's got this habit of smacking the back of Tony's head and I'm not sure if this happens in the series or something the author made up.
Oh, definitely 5 stars for sheer enjoyment. If I'd known fanfic could be so much fun, I'd have started sooner...except I'd have to have watched TV. But coming into this blind also works:D
