Sidney Sheldon (1917-2007) was an American writer who won awards in three careers—a Broadway playwright, a Hollywood TV and movie screenwriter, and a best-selling novelist.

His TV works spanned a twenty-year period during which he created I Dream of Jeannie (1965-70), Hart to Hart (1979-84), and The Patty Duke Show (1963-66), but it was not until after he turned 50 and began writing best-selling novels such as Master of the Game (1982), The Other Side of Midnight (1973) and Rage of Angels (1980) that he became most famous.

Great read!
I wanted to give this book 5 stars but nothing is perfect in life -- had to find something imperfect with it --- don't think the storytelling was long enough. A very well written book (paperback!)

Did not care for it. This is one of the few times I have given a Sheldon book a 2 rating. I think there was maybe 2 others. In any event, this book is a continuation of "The Best Laid Plans" and many of those characters are in this one. My big issue with it is how little happens. Also the main character is Dana. Leslie is not in it and that is a let down because I really wanted more of Leslie's story.

It was nice to see Dana again. Not THAT nice though and rather then Sheldon's signature twists, this book is built on romantic tension between Dana and Jeff, fueled by misunderstandings and deceit. It read very much like a ..sorry..chic k lit book..and while I read c hick lit occasionally, that is not what I was looking for here. Plus the first book, Best Laid Plans was so good I do not think a second was even needed.

Most everything Sheldon writes is incredible. There are better Sheldon books then this one.

The novel provides the thrill of watching a suspense movie. From the beginning to end it tightens the grip of suspense on readers. The storyline is perfect and provides the reading pleasure.

I picked this up at a library sale, having never read anything from Sheldon before, and the dust jacket spoke highly of him and his other work (books, TV shows, awards, etc.). Well, it's obvious they weren't talking about this book. This one contains a very thin plot, foreseeable twists, and very little imagery outside of the basic story. Good authors, who do their homework, can put the reader in the character's shoes - what they're thinking, feeling, and seeing. Here you have a main character who travels to half a dozen major cities around the world and she may as well have been traveling to Des Moines, IA. Sheldon doesn't even mention jet lag after the third or fourth flight in a week. He does, however, feel the need to introduce EVERYONE by full name - I don't care what the hotel desk clerk's first and last name is, and knowing it doesn't make me feel like I'm in Paris.
Overall this book reads like someone took a night class on how to write a government conspiracy/corruption thriller and hammered it out over a lazy weekend.

A fantastic read.In a normal book,the suspense is about who the killer is.But in this Sidney's masterpiece,the suspense builds right from the start on whether the consecutive deaths are murders are just a co-incidence.The character Dana Evans is portrayed with a surgeon's precision and I would love to meet such a character in real life.The cute love between Dana and Jeff, Jeff's concern for his ex-wife Rachel while she is in trouble are all simple things that make up this master-piece.The secret Plutonium manufacturing city which is claimed to be 'real' by the author gives the readers creeps.Dana is being followed by strangers without her knowledge and that adds to the tension.There is no way one could find the real criminal till Sasha is murdered.

I feel the end was a bit rushed through and the climax is far-fetched.However the first parts of the book make up for the quick ending.The five murders and the way Dana goes about her investigation,her actions being monitored by some unknown agents are all typical Sheldon stuff.

A must - read novel for everyone.Please don't miss it.

This was Sheldon’s second to last novel published before his death. The usual style is there: strong, determined heroine, a hidden agenda/conspiracy, worldwide travel to exotic cities. But for some reason, even though the pacing was written in Sheldon’s rapid-fire style, it seemed to take a while for things to wrap up. Not his best, but not his worst. Only so-so for me.

Quick read. Not necessarily my cup o' tea.
I'd just finished a book. I wasn't sure what to start next. I was in the mood for something mystery/thriller. I didn't have anything that fit the bill on my shelves at present and no time to run to the bookstore. Two friends of mine had just finished reading this book, they liked it and recommended it. I said, why not give it a try. We have different tastes in book genres, the three of us but they both said that Sidney Sheldon is one of their favorite authors. I'd never read a book by this author until now. Here's what I thought. This will be a semi quick review.

The Sky Is Falling is supposed to be about a local news reporter, Dana Evans who's curiosity about a well known philanthropist's murder get's her into more trouble than she bargained for.
Prior to this adventure, Dana was a news correspondent in war torn Sarajevo. Now she is back in Washington D.C. doing the local nightly news, she's engaged to the sports caster and she is trying to be mother to a orphan from Sarajovo named Kemal who lost his arm and his family to a bomb explosion.
Dana does an interview with philanthropist Paul Winthrop and the next day, he's dead. Something feels not right about this and Dana starts, in the beginning out of curiosity to look into his death. She finds that he was the last of a rich American family who within months of each other have had sudden strange deaths. Everyone talks well of the family as if they were saints but Dana feels in her gut that there is something not right under the surface. She just couldn't accept that they all came face to face with accidents. These were murders and she would get to the bottom of it.

Thoughts:
To be honest. This was a quick read and I'm glad. To me this is very drug store/grocery store I need something to occupy my time at the airport or while waiting for an appointment type of book. It was too simple. Too inconclusive. Too many loose ends and totally not believable. Too many random one page characters that were very transparent or just too simple. All the supporting characters were feeble to me. Under developed. The descriptions were of what they supposedly looked like physically but nothing supportive in the script to tell me who these people really were. What was their purpose besides their name or title. Fiction is fake and mysteries and thrillers are fantasy or infringement but this was just too B movie for me. Trying not to give away spoilers here but Dana encountered people who spoke different languages and you mean to tell me every time she could speak those languages? She was a local news reporter yet she was known world wide? Really? The relationship between her and the adopted son was just.. so careless. It didn't feel like there was any feeling or genuine connection. If there was supposed to be it was not communicated so the reader comprehended this. At all. The fiance' had some side story that I still don't comprehend the point of. Why was it there? The story was fast moving and slow moving at the same time. Fast from this place to that place to this spot to the other but technically nothing really interesting happened till the end of the book. The end was interesting but still... Hollywood B movie.

Recommend? It was quick. It passed the time. That's about it. I don't think I'll read any more of this author's books. Just not really my cup o' tea. Maybe it's the book snob in me and I mean no harm with it but.. I read Literature.. this was a book. One makes you think, ponder, feel and learn. The other causes you to exercise the mobility of your hands turning pages and exercise your retina's reading from one side to the other. But to each his/her own. I'm an advocate of reading in general. Sadly some don't even read at all. Not because they can't but because the TV and Internet have stolen their soul. So if it makes you read, whatever it is, much respect and enjoy in good health.
Two stars for keeping my busy.

I picked this book up because it was a "New York Times bestseller" and I had never read anything by Sidney Sheldon and wanted to see what I thought of him as an author. Answer: Not much. Situations are contrived, characters don't feel like real people. Just about every page has something on it that strains credibility, or seems fake or contrived. Conversations don't feel real. Situations don't feel real. There are lots of stupid little mistakes and inconsistencies. I won't pick up any more Sidney Sheldon books. This just goes to show that just because a book is a NY Times bestseller, doesn't mean it's worth reading. (I copied this review from another person because I couldn't have said it any better, and agree with it completely.)

When she comes to know about the series of murders in a well known royal family of America, she tries to investigate the crime. The more she digs deeper to find the truth, the more she is puzzled with mysterious and shocking secrets.

Finally, when she has found the suspect and tries to unravel the mystery, her very own family is in danger!! She is being hunted !! Will Dana save her family and herself by getting the mystery solved forever?

This book is an unputdownable suspense story and a treat to Sidney Sheldon's book lovers. A delightful read.

Mình thích những cuốn trinh thám có yếu tố chính trị như thế này, cảm giác động cơ giết người hợp lí hơn những thứ tủn mủn yêu hận nợ nần khác :))

Hình như trong truyện của đại ca Sheldon, cứ kẻ nào thân nhất với nhân vật chính, nhận được nhiều thông tin có giá trị nhất, thì kẻ đó đích thị là hung thủ :))))) Vì thế nên từ khi chưa hết nửa đầu câu chuyện mình đã đoán ra ai là kẻ giết cả gia đình Winthrop rồi. Nhưng những màn rượt đuổi cũng không vì thế mà kém đi hấp dẫn hehe 😁

Dana thông minh và mạnh mẽ đã tìm được nhiều cách để thoát khỏi hiểm nguy, và câu chuyện về cô đã có một cái kết viên mãn cùng Jeff và Kemal cô yêu thương nhất.

I am so sorry to write this, but this book wasn't my cup of tea. I didn't like the reason for the deaths in this story. Crime is my favorite genre and I don't like this type of crime stories. The style of writing is pretty light, it's an easy read, I did like the twist that happens, I just didn't enjoy reading this book as much, I had a totally different expectations.

Not finished - Probably won't finish since the e-library copy expired on my nook color a week ago.

Here's the thing - this book above all else, is incredibly predictable. The plot is blah, the characters under-developed and shallow. He describes the characters(namely the men) the same. I suspect her fiance is the bad guy- lol. Either way, I was very disappointed. But don't take my word for it.... (haaa)

Sidney is a talented writer, no doubt. I just didn't care for this particular novel. Read "Memories of Midnight" for a great Sidney Sheldon novel.

A good, old fashioned thriller, where corrupt politicians, big business and the Russians are all foiled by one wily journalist who just keeps asking the wrong questions. Yes, you can nit-pick about how much time Dana is allowed off from her real job and how she is told a lot of what is going on without any actual investigation and why she blindly trusted some people, but not others ... but in the end it doesn't matter. It's a good, entertaining storyline, with a couple of twists and an ending where everyone gets what they deserve.

My only annoyance was the authors habit of having Dana's internal monologue run alongside conversations with other characters - yes, in real life that happens, but trying to read it occasionally made my head hurt!

Well worth the read.

لاول مرة اتعرف على اعمال سيدني شيلدون. الرواية ممتعة ومشوقة وتسارع الاحداث فيها و انسيابية السرد تجعل القارئ يلهث خلف الاحداث كثير من المفاجئات و الاندهاش. تبدأ او تنطلق الرواية من حادثة قتل وتتابع الانسة مذيعة الاخبار فضولها الاعلامي وترفض الاجابات الجاهزة والمعدة وتبحث في تاريخ الاسرة لتكتشف ان خلف المظهر الخير شخصية جنائية ترتكب ابشع الجرائم بقفاز ناعم و نظيف وكيف ان المصالح والمكاسب السياسية حولت الاصدقاء الى اعداء. كما انه قد ينخدع المرء بالبعض فيحسن الظن بهم وهم يخدعونه ويستخدمونه لتحقيق اهدافهم بل يسهلوا له السبل وهو لا يشعر انه اداة بيدهم. جوهر الرواية الحذر حتى من اقرب من حولك . انطلقت الاحداث من دور مراسلة حربية عن احداث سراييفو وابنها بالتبني و جرائم قتل عائلة مشهورة ومن اناس تتعامل معهم وتستشيرهم في الاحداث وتطلب منهم العون وهي لا تعلم بانهم هم الطرف الاخر في الجريمة. هذه الرواية تتحدث عن صراع القوى وبسط النفوذ وبالتالي السيطرة على العالم والتحكم في كل موارده.انطلقت الرواية بحادثة قتل احد اشهر الشخصيات في المجتمع الامريكي ذات الثراء الفاحش والنفوذ وهو جاري وينثروب وهو اخر افراد هذه الاسرة و بمقتلة الذي اثار فضول المذيعة ذات الشهرة العالية والتي تحظى بقبول عالي لدي المشاهدين الذين يتابعون تقاريرها الاخبارية منذو ان كانت مراسلة للمحطة في سراييفو وكانت تنقل الواقع الانساني للمأسأة . وسبب اهتمامها برجل المال والاعمال والعمل الخيري و المفتون باقتناء اللوحات الفنية ذات القيمة العالية. هو انه كان ضيف على برنامجها واجرت معه لقاء ولكن في ليلة ذاك اللقاء حصل له حادث القتل . كانت معجبة بتواضعة ودماثة اخلاقة وتشاركه هواية جمع اللوحات الفنية. الشيء الذي ادهشها ان جريمة القتل لم يكن خلفا دافع سرقة او تهديد مسبق فقد تمت بدم بارد ودخلوا الى قصره ونفذوا العملية ولم يمسوا شيء من المقتنيات او يحدثوا اضرار في القصر وبالرغم من ان القصر محاط بنظام حراسة وكميرات مراقبة هذا ما جعلها تبحث هل هو حالة انتحار ام قتل؟ وعندما بدأت المذيعة بالاهتمام بالحادث و المتابعة وتبحث عن تفسير للحادث فلجأت الى جهات عدة حكومية وفردية واعضاء مجلس الشيوخ و الكونغرس وتنقلت من بلد لاخر واخيراً اكتشفت انها ضحية شبكة كبيرة ومجموعة منظمة من افراد متنفذين وجهات حكومية امنية متواطئة في كل من امريكا وروسيا والمانيا. كل منها تسعى للسيطرة والنفوذ وكلها لها ارتباط بما حدث لعائلة وينثروب وان من يحاول ان يكشف السر فمصيرة كبقية افراد اسرة وينثروب .
الرواية تقدم مجموعة من الافكار منها ان صراع المصالح يجعل القتل سهل للتخلص من المنافس مهما كان ومن كان. كذلك عدم الثقة المطلقة حتى فيمن حولك الابعد تجربة ومعايشة لصيقة فقد يكون أقرب من يعمل معك او من يشعرك بالإطمئنان هو من يستغلك ويستخدمك لتحقيق اهدافه. او يخدعك وهو العدو الذي تبحث عنه بعيداً وهو يعيش معك ويسمع خططك فلاتثق بمجرد العلاقة العملية او حتى الصداقة مالم تكن عن تجربة وخبرة. كن حذر وفكر لنفسك.
رواية كما ذكرت مشوقة واحداثها متتابعة وانسيابية والكاتب لايترك للقارئ فرصة ليلتقط انفاسه كما ان الغموض و مجريات الاحداث تجعل القارئ يحاول ان يتنبئ بالخاتمة لكنها تاتي بعكس ما كان يتوقع . الرواية مليئة بالمعلومات وجديرة بالقراءة وقد احسنت مكتبة جرير الاختيار والكاتب لا يحتاج من يعرف به وله في ترجمات جرير عدد اربع او ثلاث روايات وقد باع اكثر من ٣٠٠ مليون نسخة العنوان السماء تتهاوى فعلاً احسن اختيار العنوان فالاحداث تتسارع وتتهاوى كما لو ان السماء تتهاوى

DNF-ed halfway through.

I wish the sky fell on me before I even reached for this book.

The first book I read by Sheldon I didn’t like, however I decided to give him another chance because a few of my friends liked his work, maybe I just picked up a bad one… so this is my second Sidney Sheldon book and I still don’t like his writing or whatever this is called. I wanted to be stubborn and finish it but the book is so damn annoying and… gaaah!

The synopsis made this book sound great, however the execution of the idea is poor. Characters are lifeless and unmemorable; you can’t connect to them. The writing is too simple even less than simple there is no description of… anything, just the writer telling us what happened in as few words as possible.

Things that drove me crazy, over and over through 140 pages that I read, were:

• The fractured “story”. We jump from one scene to the other and then to the next one… does that scene have any point? Probably not. How was important for Dana’s mother to call her and tell her she thought Dana would cry at the Winthrop funeral, were Dana answers that she did cry. What importance did that scene have?!

• So many POV’s! There is someone following her or whatever? Okay, cool, show me then don’t tell me; especially not in a paragraph containing only a few sentences.

• The dialogue is so… so eh.

• Her adopting a kid and then leaving him alone most of the time, not spending time with him or trying to understand how he feels.

Well... this book really disappointed me. After quite some time since couple of people recommended Sheldon to me, I decided it was time to try his books. They all said that "The Sky Is Falling" is one of his best books. Considering this statement was right, I am in no way eager to read any other.

Although the idea of the story itself is good, its potential was, somehow, wasted. All the time during the reading, I was under the impression that this book was not written, but simply, put together in a rush.

The plot is very weak, only made to look complicated, but actually too simple and truly predictable. Dana is visiting some truly astonishing places, but their descriptions do not even exist. Just a couple of words to support the sentence. The number of side characters too big. The conversations are plain, too short, empty, emotionless. Even though it can be understandable for a thriller to be lacking on the "emotional-drama" side, it is still necessary for a story to work. It is also possible to accomplish both high-adrenaline action and emotional approach to the story and characters. (Take Harlan Coben`s novels for example), so it is not an excuse. In this book, you can not connect even with the main character.

It will take a lot of good critics, and really big number of pleased readers for me to take another of Sheldons books to read.

3 Stars. It's good but not great. I liked the premise; a leading family in America gets wiped-out in a series of five fatal accidents and our hero, Dana Evans, one of Washington DC's rising stars in TV news, gets drawn in. Why not great you ask? The antagonists just seem to be too capable in their nefarious enterprises for their size and Ms. Evans just seems to be too naive and out there on her own. She needs to read a few thrillers in her spare time! I felt like shaking her, "Dana, a little more wariness is needed!" Having interviewed Gary Winthrop the evening before he was murdered in an art theft, she feels compelled to investigate the extraordinary coincidence of this rich and civic-minded family all dying in similar situations over the period of a year. Were their deaths intentional? If so, for what reason? While she travels across the US and the globe, the danger for Dana and her newly adopted son Kemal, a war-orphan from her recent assignment in Sarajevo, rises as she gets closer to the truth. Along the way, she begins to understand the importance of trust and skepticism. The reason for the title eventually works its way to the forefront. (June 2019)

I never thought in a Gazillion, Billion years that I would find a Sidney Sheldon book that I couldn't finish. I feel as though I have stepped into the twilight zone.

The plot was so fractured that I could barely follow - one moment we were talking to Dana's manager, then her adopted son then someone else... A whole scene in which her mother's new husband insults her adopted son and its over in a paragraph... Usually with Sidney Sheldon's novels we are given so much detail about our narrator that we feel every one of their feelings and small exchanges such as this become interesting and progress the plot, but I barely knew Dana.

Every character was wonderful or perfect and their situations were wonderful and life was just bloody wonderful, unless you were a Winthrop apparently...

This just wasn't the book for me.

Amazing Amazing book!
Dana Evans was the star for the right reasons. Investigating into Winthrope murders, the biggest mistake she made was taking friends for friends. An obvious enemy is an open option and one expects such things from them but who is worst of all enemies? A friend turned foe. Trusting someone is a hard job, not everyone roots for you but the people who really do, carve a way to do so like Jeff and Kemal.
If this was a story of selfish, cold blooded murders, it was also a story about compassion and selfless-ness.
Thrilling, exciting, fast paced and engaging.

The most striking thing that I felt about this novel was its well laid clear story line. Protagonist, Dana Evans, a news reporter and anchor, is obssessed with a series of murders that look very much like accidents but it rings the bells somwhere.
The hunt for witnesses is on and Dana goes around various countries to find something about Winthropes.
Somewhere I felt that story is mostly focused on Dana and the rest of the people are fill ins; a bit of rounded characters. Everyone is almost stereotypical.
Hudsons seemed like that.

The best way to distract someone is to divert them to wrong clues. Truth is an illusion and if the frame of reference is false, one can hardly see through it. I'll not spoil the plot twist BUT it left me shocked... utterly stunned.

Be it private affairs or global conspiracies... Everyone tries to impose a better picture of themseleves before the world. Winthropes were too good to be true and this story revealed all that glitters is not gold.

This book felt like a Hollywood film script. Fast and too good to be true.

This was just a page turner. Lot of conversation and limited background. Was so easy to read. No brain hemorrhage at all. I was a bit surprised by how naïve Dana appeared to be. I mean, somethings were so obvious and she missed them not in a small water hole but in Mariana Trench. It's a good story with shadows of suspicions everywhere. Only the main character didn't see them.

As I said, it's got a nature of a film script other than a novel so I don't really know how to go about the characters and plot and all that. It's not Other side of Midnight and Dana is not Noelle Page. Doesn't mean it's bad. Still, it won't go any higher than 3 stars.

A really good book. The story revolves around Dana Evans who is a well known television news reporter who tries to investigate the murdur of the entire Winthrop family (who happen to be a royal family, rich and all) which happens coincidentally one after the other in the same year. The book is filled with suspense and its very exciting. By the end, Dana comes down to narrowing her suspicions on three main people, who in the past fought or had problems with the Winthrops family. But its only until later that she realises the ones she trusted the most were responsible all along, and fortunately its not too late and the ending is justified. This book really made me admire the author and I'd love to try some of his other novels soon.

Wilson. Wilson. Wilson. How many times have I called that name. I need to start binding you. And I don't even care how wrong that sounds, you're Nigerian so you know EXACTLY what I mean. Strongarming me upandan...

Right, so, the book. Man, this was very easy to read. Like murder she wrote, it was "waayy too easy". It was simple. It was even simplistic (is this a word, it's not in my phone's keyboard's dictionary). So simplistic as to even be outright childish. Like, seriously, Chicken Little?? What's going on here??

I don't believe this author was the one we were going cuckoo for as teenagers many (many many) years ago. If Tomorrow Comes. Windmills of the gods. Kane and Abel.
Oh, wait, at least one or two of those titles should be a Jeffery Archer book.. And maybe that is the issue. I read these 2 guys growing up about the same time, so they could all be mixed in my mind. Good stories. However, I'm worried now those Jeffery Archer books we used to love those days may actually also now turn out to be rather childish...sigh.

Little to no descriptions of the ambience, the environment, the setting. Very stupid people (or maybe they were all bought) who absolutely refused to see a second side to the story. Some unnecessary backgrounds and characters even. The use of the word "wonderful" 😆😅😂


The whole book felt like one very long conversation. Somone was always saying something. Or thinking something. I didn't even know where those conversations and thoughts were taking place, never really got a sense of their surroundings. Sheldon was so in love with conversations that, there was a part where, there was a conversation, and immediately after, some dude played a recording of the same conveconversation and we had to read that same conversation all over again! Don't believe me? Fine. And I'm only putting it in spoilers to shorten my review, not because I care about spoiling the book. The book itself is like your spoilt younger sibling. And, let me warn you, this was done at least twice in this book. My head.

The fear was back in Joan Sinisi’s eyes. “No—I mean yes. But it was a mistake, you see. I made a mistake.” “What kind of mistake?” Joan Sinisi swallowed. “I—I misunderstood something Mr. Winthrop said to someone. I behaved very foolishly. I’m ashamed of myself.” “You sued, but you didn’t take him to court?” “No. He—we settled the lawsuit. It was nothing.” Dana glanced around the penthouse. “I see. Can you tell me what the settlement was?” “No, I’m afraid I can’t,” Joan Sinisi said. “It’s all very confidential.” Dana wondered what it could have been that made this timid woman bring a lawsuit against a titan like Taylor Winthrop and why she was terrified to talk about it. What was she afraid of? There was a long silence. Joan Sinisi was watching Dana, and Dana had the feeling that she wanted to say something. “Miss Sinisi—” Joan Sinisi rose. “I’m sorry I can’t be more—if there’s nothing else, Miss Evans…” “I understand,” Dana said. I wish I did. He put the tape into the machine and pressed the start button. I—I misunderstood something Mr. Winthrop said to someone. I behaved very foolishly. I’m ashamed of myself. You sued, but you didn’t take him to court? No. He—we settled the lawsuit. It was nothing. I see. Can you tell me what the settlement was? No, I’m afraid I can’t. It’s all very confidential. The second one was: As Dana and Kemal were leaving, Roger Hudson took Dana aside. “In all candor, Miss Evans, I find your conspiracy theory about the Winthrops in the realm of fantasy. My eyes hurt. Police called a woman falling over a four foot barrier around a skyscraper terrace "an accident". And, or course, our Inteprid reporter spotted the wall and IMMEDIATELY knew this wasn't an accident. God. I need eye bleach.

Don't even get me started on his interjections with foreign language. You could tell he just literally sat there with Google open to a language website, copying and posting foreign words as he thought fit. And did Kemal have to be soooooooooo American? Boy, that got old fast.

Today is August 10, 2018. The...the...purzon 😡that forced me to read this just admitted she didn't even finish it. That's it. I'm done.
