"Maybe you receive hundreds of messages daily but I'd like to tell you you're a great woman + author!!! You're simply honest and free with yourself and everybody. Good work."
-- N.R. (from Lebanon | Facebook message)

"Just read Real Love Versus Romance...loved the ideas & compilation of ideas...great!! :) I agreed with many of the points of how romance has been commercialized for effect instead of portraying the actual depth of true romance. . . a lot has been lost to appease a tween generation or to generally confuse people of all ages on the expectations of romance..."

EXCERPT (from the "Introduction"):

"As a poet, I enjoy writing about what I love the examining life in all its lovely ambiguity, grittiness, glory and despair. I enjoy discovering new ways of looking at universal concepts and old ways of looking at the new and unfamiliar. I like writing about what makes us human, and exploring the complexity of the human psyche.

This collection presents (slightly more than) five hundred haiku that I've written over the ages of 9 to 25, as I tried (and continue to try) to maintain some level of sense and sanity as I go about my daily existence.

Thank you for joining me on this personal journey of reflection and introspection, via my first collection of haiku
INSTANTANEOUS (IN)SANITY."

EXCERPT (3 Haiku):

Functions in Analysis
God made us a brain
To sustain the insane pain
Of testing its use.

Dance
Figures, dancing in
The Shadows, quick yet silent
Under the Moonlight.

Ever been kissed?
Of course--Describe it
--Why?--I want to know if you've
Ever seen Heaven.

Hi all,

I was trying to find my way as a writer and person throughout my twenties. I won't be writing under my "Jess C Scott" pen name as it doesn't reflect who I am anymore (it's a pen name I used since I was 12 years old).

In 2019, I started working on some horror short stories and essays. I intend to publish them at some point in future under my real name (still undecided if I might use a new pen name for fiction).

See you at my new site if the genres are of interest to you :)

Thank you and take care! 👋✍️

Instantaneous Insanity contains a ton of haikus about every single topic imaginable. It's nice that the poems have a chronological sequence: the author started writing haikus when she was only ten years old, and the collection climbs up to the age of 25. In those 15 years, and with so many differences angles of approach to write about the world, she touches on almost every kind of topic. While the earlier verses about nature somehow remind me of Native American wisdom snippets, her more recent and cynical work is about politics, hypocrisy, sex, love, the state of the world, cyberpunk, elves and whatnot. Sometimes I feel like I should have read the books/stories these haikus belong to (there is a Cyberpunk Elven Trilogy also authored by her) before picking this one up, but maybe that's just me. Although the author mentions at the end of the book that she will try to make the next 500 haikus she writes a little less cynical, I didn't think her poetry is negative in any kind of way (just rebellious at times, but I personally like that)!

One of my favourites is 'Ode to Memory': Aid me in times gone / by, when charred remains replace / my once open heart.

Beautiful. The only complaint I have is that the layout is a bit dodgy (poems starting with a title at the bottom of once page and continuing on the next, capital letters where I didn't expect them), but maybe that is just me as well.

Haiku has always been considered to be one of the "easier" poetry forms - a simple 5/7/5 structure means it could, in theory, be written by anyone who can count syllables. But there's so much more to this poetic form and Jess C. Scott takes you there with a wonderful collection of haiku, her self-defined psuedo-haiku and scifaiku, dipping into her imagination to create mental stories with only a handful of words.

With literally hundreds of short and snappy poems this is a read to be savored over time. It's not a book you want to sit down and read all at once - it's best taken in small doses where you allow yourself to savor the sensations and wallow in the visuals Ms Scott expertly and beautifully creates with so few words.

This collection runs the gauntlet from sex to dragons to elven cyberpunk and across a variety of topics. If you're looking for a great read and to stir the imagination it's worth picking up this collection!
