Rate this book
9 pieces of erotic fiction, ranging from modern times in familiar settings, to long ago and far away, with several stopoffs at strange and unfamiliar lands along the way - and every one exploring hot sex and its connection to our essential humanity and understanding of the world, each other, and ourselves.

That's right. Hot sex.

"Heartscaping" - F/F fic involving, of all things, plants. No, not garden vegetables!
"Homecoming" - M/? fic; home is where the heart is. Especially when you have a sentient house.
"Hunting Hound" - F/M fic; because this princess needs something more than the usual prince. Mild trigger warnings for (consensual) sexual violence.
"The Spy Who..." - F/M fic; a message comes in that needs to be revealed through a chemical reaction by the queen and her head spy, by unconventional means.
"Everything But" - F/M; Marriage can be truly transformative. Sometimes literally.
"Fruit of Knowledge, Seed of Truth" - F/M/?; a Snow White tale like you've never read it before.
"Her Master's Voice" - M/F; what's the dynamic when he's in charge, and she's a werewolf that could rip him apart?
"Summer Nights" - M/F; the man lurking through the summer parties at the lakehouses is not what he seems, and she's not the usual type either. Of course they gravitate to one another behind the boathouse. Mild trigger warnings for (consensual) sexual violence.

These stories may at first seem tiny, but they are hugely original. Each one is well crafted, unique, and quite distinct from the others. Once you've read them all (most likely in a single sitting), you'll want to back and sample them one at a time. Like all good erotica, it leaves the reader wanting something more.

One of my "must re-reads" and like all of the books by this author is permanently ensconced in my Kindle just so I can curl up with it at anytime, so long as my kindle is charged. This happens rather often, just so you know.

My friend Pat helped me make a connection with an author on G+ this past week. Andrea, a.k.a. Bliss, was looking for people to read 2 collections of short stories she had. One was erotica and the other fantasy. I agreed to read both collections and review them.

My background reading erotica is not extensive. My taste in writing tends to be a preference for direct, clear language. Erotica is not known for that from my reading experience. My favorite erotica is (was and always shall be) Ann Rice's Sleeping Beauty Trilogy. I like my erotica to have a distinct and well developed story. I like that in general as a reader. Short story collections are not something I often read because you don't always get a lot of character development. No, I have not and will not read the 50 Shades of Gray Trilogy because I already read Twilight.

Andrea has written a collection of stories, but they are more like vignettes rather than stories. They are bite sized scenes that seem to be designed to titillate. They are predominately the sex scene rather than the story. There is little to no character development. They run the gamut between historical, fantasy, lesbian, vampire, fairy tale, werewolf, and space sex. The theme is that they are erotica. If there is truth that erotica readers really just want to get to the next sex scene, then this book will deliver a nice selection of options for those types of readers. You just pick your pleasure, read and enjoy.

For me, this book didn't work. As I said, I like clear language. Bliss writes in elaborate details. There are lots of adjectives and metaphors. I found it difficult to read around the details to get to what she was saying. I found myself confused at what was being described what or what position a couple was in. In many cases I had to read something a few times (and even out loud to myself) to be able to create a mental picture of what was happening. Erotica, for me, is all about the mental picture I can create. Sex is all about the position you are in. I didn't feel like I should have to work this hard to enjoy an erotica story. I did not find myself wanting more because it was too much work.

My other struggle was that a number of these stories didn't appeal to me for a variety of reasons. It may be helpful, for future collections, to stick with 1 theme. My sexual preferences dictate what type of erotica I will enjoy. It would be nice to have a collection of fantasy erotica for those who like that or lesbian erotica for those who like that. Since I agreed to review the book, I read everything in the book. If I were picking this on my own, I would have skipped the vast majority of the book. I would not have paid for a book where only 2 of the short stories appealed to me.

There was one story I did enjoy: Summer Night. It appealed to me both in plot and development. Of all the stories in the collection, this one seemed the most complete. I felt I had a sense of character development similar to normal short stories. The language was, when compared to the other stories, more direct and clear about what was happening. Considering that vampirism is already a metaphor for sex, the clarity of the language was critical to knowing exactly what was happening. I would pay for a book with more short stories like this one.

Who will like this? If you read romance novels and erotica to get to the sex scenes then you will probably love this. If you are just looking for something quick to read and this is your favorite genre, then you will like this.
