The scene is set by a series of events a few months earlier, culminating in the present where the main tension starts to take shape and hook you in.
An unsuspecting small American town in the middle of nowhere suddenly becomes the focus of intense action by covert agents, assassins and the military; the President addresses the nation on television with the cause of such drastic action. Peoples' lives are forever altered as the implications become apparent - some for good, others...
However, not everything is as it seems and soon there’s an undercurrent that the local sheriff is getting uncomfortable about; something is not right!
What is really going on? What secrets are being hidden? Who can you trust?
Award-winning author Eric J. Gates has had a curious life filled with the stuff of thriller novels. Writing Operating Systems for Supercomputers, cracking cryptographic codes under extreme pressure using only paper and pen and teaching cyberwarfare to spies are just a few of the moments he’s willing to recall. He is an ex-International Consultant who has travelled extensively worldwide, speaks several languages, and has had articles and papers published in six different countries, as well as radio and TV spots. His specialty, Information Technology Security, has brought him into contact with the Military and Intelligence communities on numerous occasions. He is also an expert martial artist, holding 14 black belt degrees in distinct disciplines. He has taught his skills to Police and Military personnel, as well as to the public. He now writes thriller novels, drawing on his experiences with the confidential and secret worlds that surround us.
Not only is this story itself full of suspense, but Gates’ method of writing keeps you on the edge of your seat. He uses short, concise sentences to set the mood at times, and switches to longer, more flowing sentences to tone down other scenes. This author grasps not only the power of words but also the power of sentence structure within the novel. He manages to bring absolute chaos to life so that you feel like you are living it with the characters.
Personally, I don’t generally like stories that jump around from place to place and time to time. Gates, however, uses this method to add to the mystery, suspense, and urgency of the tale. The way that it is laid out, he avoids muddying the time and place for each event. Everything is kept clear & separate, avoiding confusion on the part of the reader. The short chapters really help with this.
I loved that Gates uses the correct terms for attack measures & countermeasures, individuals & their positions, etc. It makes the novel seem much more realistic. If Gates were to write the same novel using vague, flowery, or incorrect terms it would have lost a great deal of impact on the audience. It’s very hard to focus on the story when what is registering to the reader is that the scene doesn’t make sense with the story or is undetailed. The terminology and details used helps lead to the fact that you are almost immediately caught up in the conspiracy theory of the novel. You’re constantly wondering what’s really going on and “what if” and “who is he really?”
The dates for past events are also correct. Gates uses reality as a basis for his fictional tale, and he does it correctly. Stories that start in this vein have such potential to let the audience down if the facts are incorrect that it is a real risk to take this route. I definitely commend Gates as an author that takes the time and puts in the extra effort to do so. I also need to thank him for taking the time to double check these facts. It greatly added to the enjoyment of the novel.
Gates also manages to create a variety of different characters. Some of them you get to know quite well. You know their history, their friends, their likes, and dislikes. Others you barely get to know at all. They remain a mystery to the reader. There is one character whose real name I still do not know. It’s brilliant. Based on his job, this would be the reality for that character. Gates develops each character in a way suited to their position in the world and in the novel.
Overall I was excessively surprised throughout the novel. Gates combines detail and writing style to create a thrilling ride for his readers.
Full Disclosure is about the power that the state can wield to fool its citizens into believing anything that it pleases, whether for good or bad reasons. However, Eric J. Gates seems to give us hope that at least in this case, that power will not be misused, although we are never quite sure, because there are several red herrings laid in our path on our roller-coaster ride towards the end of the mystery.
I had never heard of Mr. Gates before acquiring this book for my new Kindle, but once I started reading it, I could not put it down without reluctance. I found the storyline and the plot fascinating. The characters were well drawn and. believable. I particularly liked the way Gates did not make his characters too black or white - even the villains were not over-daubed, which is how I think it is in real life.
After all, even Hitler, one of the most hated people in the whole of history, fell in love and liked dogs.
The trio who eventually get to the bottom of the mystery that this book creates, and ultimately reveals, are a mixed bunch who are thrown together to fight a common foe, that threatens to undermine American society.
I thoroughly recommended this suspense - thriller by a master of the genre and hope that he writes many more, perhaps even using some of the same characters.
I have subscribed to the RSS feed of Mr. Gate's blog so that I don't miss his latest news, and I can't say that about any other author.
I would love to tell you more, but then I would have to silence you, or perhaps the author might send the deadly Debby after me...
A superb thriller. An excellent novel. As a thriller, ‘Full Disclosure’ is intensely readable. As a novel, it’s inspired, imaginative and superbly plotted with a cast of engaging characters. It opens up without preamble, hitting the ground running as Mr. Gates takes the reader along to witness a jaded professional assassin accomplish a night mission kill near Las Vegas. The taut, lean description of the hit is as cool a piece of thriller writing as I’ve read in quite a while. And thus the hook is set. I won’t tell you the story, but what follows is a big, and involved plot; high concept? Perhaps. Though complex, the storyline moves at a fast pace and with much action. The violence is creative and cold-blooded, involving narcotics, money laundering, treachery, and political skullduggery. It’s dramatic stuff. And the tension is enhanced by the writer’s clever use of both long and short, chapters along with rapid shifts of locale; from the empty chatter of a crowded diner in an obscure mining town in Texas, we’re abruptly taken to the Oval Office of the White House to observe the president and his advisors discussing strategy. ‘Full Disclosure’ is the product of a fertile and imaginative mind. Could it happen? Improbable perhaps, but in today’s world, I do believe it could. This is the 4th book of Eric J. Gates I’ve read. It’s a terrific read; something you come to expect if you’re familiar with this writer’s stuff. I recommend it highly and look forward to more.
Some YouWriteOn website reader reviews for Full Disclosure (can be consulted and verified independently):
“A fast, frenetic thriller… all the makings of a great page-turner.”
“Very edge of seat stuff… Thought the action and pace were excellent, reminded me of an episode of ‘24’ or the ‘Bourne’ books and definitely in the Tom Clancy mould of thriller.”
“What a rip-roaring enjoyable read!”
“One word - WOW! The story grabbed me from the start and was paced to keep me reading. Each scene was riveting and contributed to what was coming.”
“I loved it. The writing is engaging and smooth, the scene setting is enviable and the plot sucked me in... I expect this to be made into a film, after it becomes a best seller.”
“Who have you got in mind to play the President in the Hollywood version? Loved it. It is a long, long time since I have read anything that offered such attention to detail, essential in raising the credibility and suspense of an excellent thriller.”
“Wow - where to start. Fast paced, plenty of action, on the edge of my seat thrills.”
Eric Gates is my guilty pleasure. I'm not normally a huge fan of thrillers - with some notable exceptions - but there is a pace to Full Disclosure that keeps the pages turning from beginning to end. From the opening scene - which is a master class in starting with a bang - to the outlandish conclusion, this was a great read.
I finished Full Disclosure a week ago i just haven't time to get into update my books i feel disappointed I couldn't sit and read it quickly Still feel sure its up with all of Eric's books consistent and always keeping you interested right to the finish 5 stars
After reading this story, I decided that if they could keep all these secrets all this time, they could keep them a little longer – OR divulge them a little slower!!! I enjoyed the story and recommend the book.
As Ulysses S Grant said: “The art of war is simple enough. Find out where your enemy is. Get him as soon as you can. Strike him as hard as you can, and keep moving on.” Moore and Sally (or whatever names they use) seem to be pretty good at this. And then there is Josie and Joe. I enjoyed the story and recommend the book.
Really interesting plot. The President discloses that aliens have been here 70 years. But after a brief appearance, that's the last of the ets. After that, it's a battle between the assassin's and the military. I thought it was a well done. Military-industrial group vs. the assassins.
Great premise and title for this book but falls a little short in the writing which tends to be a little simplistic and light on character development.
