In the cemeteries of Paris, one is struck by the beauty of the monuments and statues and by the accomplishments of those entombed there. The famous Pere Lachaise cemetery is the final home of Marcel Proust, Oscar Wilde, and Isadora Duncan; while across the city, in Montmartre, lie Edgar Degas, Emile Zola, and Alexandre Dumas. The maps, photographs, and short biographies in this detailed guide make you an instant expert on the lives and deaths of Paris's most prominent and permanent residents.
This is a fairly specialist guide book. If you already know you want to follow the cemetery trail, then take it with you, for it is full of fascinating insights into the lives of some of the most famous people buried in this most wonderful of cities. If you are a repeat visitor to Paris, or an armchair dreamer, then this is definitely for you. A morning, afternoon or day spent in Pere Lachaise cemetery is an absolute delight. This book can take you there, and beyond. Recommended.
One of my faves--if you plan on a trip to Paris, a must have, since so many famous people are buried there. The authors do a great job of condensing hugely complex bios into a pleasant reading experience. And their maps are great--go find your hero, be it Oscar Wilde, Jim Morrison, or Gertrude Stein, and do as the french do--take a bottle of wine to toast them and leave a single red rose on a grave.
