This is a bunch of quotes assembled by the authors about sex. They go to literature, pop culture, folk sayings, etc. It is not for the sexually squeamish, if that's a phrase. Blunt language and ideas. Some of it is on target and some of it's regrettable. But, it is entertaining, mostly. I laughed out loud at a lot of this. It also has some quotes that are on point, like Germaine Greer and the concept that women should be able to have sex before marriage and still keep their jobs. Which yes. It has also illustrations that are slightly sexual, but mostly tasteful.
My two favorite quotes are as follows: A lot of translations have to be rejected as inept. In a late novel of mine, Earthly Powers, the injunction "Go to Malaya and write about planters going down with the DT's (delirium tremors)" was rendered into Italian to the effect of writing about planters committing fellatio with doctors of theology.- Anthony Burgess.
The perfect hostess will see to it that the works of male and female authors be properly separated on her bookshelves. Their proximity, unless they happen to be married, should not be tolerated."-Lady Gough, Etiquette 1836.
I laughed out loud at the first quote and my books are not separated by gender. They will never be. So, it's amusing and entertaining and a quick read. I love collecting good and amusing quotes. I have a lot of these types of books. So, it's a quotes book about sex. Now you know. And now, it can leave my apartment shortly. It is what it is. 3 stars.
By turns ribald, funny, sobering, thought provoking and contradictory, this book gives little insights by various authors, playwrights, socialists, actors et al. about the oldest profession that is ever new. While it gives no advice about how to deal with the sexes, it does shed a cheery light on a subject that often takes place in the dark.
Full of around five hundred funny and witty quotes on Sex with amusing illustrations. Includes quotes from Jean Harlow, Mae West, Oscar wilde,Elizabeth taylor, William Shakespere, and Rita Mae Brown.
