The Cop Brendan Daly prides himself on being a man’s man – in both senses of the word. A Boston cop with a hard body and a Southie’s hot temper, Brendan is taken aback when his boyfriend Kent accuses him of letting their love life go stale. So at Kent’s office Christmas party, Brendan decides to surprise him with some roleplaying – cop vs. suspect.
The Doc Fresh out of medical school, handsome Stephen Gallagan is every woman’s idea of a catch. Trouble is, he’s not sure he wants a woman. Surrounded by predators in cocktail dresses, Stephen flees the Christmas party through the service corridor, running smack into Brendan. In the dark, in a tux, Stephen is a dead ringer for Kent.
The Broom Closet The room is pitch black. Brendan is taller, stronger, and too intent on kissing Stephen to permit any protest. Metal cuffs snap around Stephen’s wrists. Ready or not, it’s time to obey…
I'm a writer of fantasy adventures. My first book, a reincarnation romance called Past Lives #1: Rachel is now available.
I also write cozy mysteries like Ice Blue and Blue Murder (coming Spring 2012) as Emma Jameson. And as S.A. Reid, I write adult romances like Something Different, Protection, and Soulless (coming Spring 2012).
A string of sex scenes with a few content warnings (), all barely held together by something that might (if you squint really, really hard) resemble an attempt at relationship development. Not a flaw on the book’s part, just saying it as it is. It worked for me because it was what I was looking for, just be sure you’re not reading it expecting more than it can offer.
The book ends at 54% because there are two excerpts from two other books by the authors. Which is totally not annoying, not even a little bit. I love thinking I still have half of the story left to read, only to realize it’s already finished and the rest is random stuff I couldn’t care less about.
If that theme doesn't bother you, then you'll find this story pretty enjoyable. It's not really D/s or bdsm, so much as an exchange of power in a few very descriptive dub-con encounters.
I wouldn't want to encounter a cop like Brendan or a doctor like Stephen in real life - would find them creepy as hell and ethically bankrupt, but in the context of the story, they're perfect for each other.
Really, it gets 4 stars mainly for the well-written sex scenes.
For me, this was one of those 'there's a 5* story in here somewhere' type of books. I loved the characters, both individually and as a couple and the writing, for the most part was witty and enjoyable, but the plot holes and visible plot devices took away from a 5* rating for me.
Stephen and Brendan meet in a broom closet when Brendan tries to prove to his ex that he's not boring in the sack. He mistakes Stephen for his boyfriend because apparently, a)they're built the same, b) the closet was dark and c)Brendan thinks that the fact that Stephen doesn't sound anything like his bf is part of the act. Ok, so you need to suspend disbelief there slightly, but I was willing to roll with it. The closet scene was actually hot. Yes, Stephen sucks off a perfect stranger but hey, he is a sexually frustrated, 26 yr old virgin.
The problems come later:
Issue 1 I just have to take this time out to say that, only in books, can the smell of coffee and cigarettes on someone's breath be described as a 'perfume'. LOL
Issue 2
Ok, so I got over those two things and I'm still loving my boys, but then we get to issue 3
And 4
And 5
So those were my issues. But, believe it or not, I still really liked the book. And yes, I agree with those who said that it was very misleading to have the story end at 50% and then have previews for other books. Given the ending, I thought the other half of the book would be a story including Alex. Also, why exactly did Alex look scared? That didn't sit right with me (Issue 6? LOL).
I don't know. It felt like this book tried to straddle the fence between a romance and a dub con/non con and missed the mark. Some of the scenes felt too forced (porn-ish), like the traffic stop.
Like I said, with some revamping, this could easily have been a 5 star read. I think both authors are extremely talented and I did enjoy this story, but too many things detracted from it, overall.
This was a fairly entertaining erotic novella. The plot is a bit disjointed and requires some suspension of disbelief (a couple of the encounters read as more porny than realistic), but overall it's very hot.
[Note: The story ended around the 50% mark on my Kindle, and the rest is excerpts from the authors' other books. Just a heads up for those who don't like when books seem longer than they are.]
Ooooh...I liked this one. The ending was a little questionable for me, but overall I liked the characters and story quite a bit. This story is a contemporary m/m erotic romance short story/novella.
Who, what, and where? A blue collar police officer and a posh (virrrrrgin!) doctor in Boston. They meet through completely unplanned circumstances. It's pretty hot. They have to work through their perceived class differences to realize their incendiary attraction to each other just will not be denied.
My thoughts. Really liked it. I thought the characterization was really well done. I liked Brendan (the officer) and Stephen (the doc). Although Stephen still had his V card, it was really exciting to see him come into his sexuality...with Brendan there to lend a helping hand (...and mouth...and cock...). ;) As they resolved their differences and their feelings for each other, it became clear that they had a rather adventurous and aggressive sexual compatibility.
What gave me pause. That adventurous sexual side led to a HEA that was kind of...squeamish for me. It's clear they had an HEA between the two of them, but the final scene didn't really fit my comfort zone of HEA. While I guess this fit into the adventurous aspect of their relationship, I just...didn't like that part (sorry!).
Overall. Quite a hot little piece of fiction here. I enjoyed it. 3.5-4 stars.
N.B.: The Kindle version ends at ~54%. The rest of the file contains two excerpts from the authors' other works.
Note: Thank you to the author for providing a copy of this story in exchange for an honest opinion.
Holy hot medical fetish, Batman! With a little cuff-me-officer fetish on the side.
This was quick and fun. S.A. Reid has a knack for writing these dastardly characters that I love to love. They are so rough around the edges that I shouldn't even like them, but I end up loving them. I wish this had been longer and more developed, because I think I really could have fallen for these two boys and their messed up beginning. But for a short, I thought they were a lot of fun.
3.5 stars. Steamy short m/m romance about a cop who meets a young doctor in a most unusual way, giving a whole new meaning to "closeted". Be aware that there's dubious consent in this one.
Sadly not my kind of story. Stephen and Brendan were interesting characters and the Date scene was great. A little more of that and a little less of the sex and I'd of been happy lol.
If you know what I like to read, you know that I am not squeamish and I love a good rape role-play. I've even read and enjoyed age play, non-consent, you name it. So here I am reading, there's great writing, great setup, I'm SO excited.
We're heavy into sexytimes and hero 1 says that hero 2's cock feels like "a baby's arm" as it rubs up against his own cock. Yeah. I pretty much had to wash my brain out with soap to get that image out of my head, but I'm a trooper so I head back in and get to this:
"Just open your mouth, baby. I'll tell you what to do," Brendan cooed, a little surprised by the tone he assumed. It was sweetly villainous, the archetype of every stranger that ever offered candy to pink-cheeked little boys. Opening his fly he reached in, withdrawing the grandaddy of all illicit treats.
I'm sorry, what? Did the HERO just compare himself to a pedophile rapist? I don't even....
"Suck it, now. Suck this big fat lollipop from Uncle Brendan."
Oh. Yes, he did.
So yeah, this didn't work for me AT ALL. If you weren't squicked the hell out, I'm not gonna judge. I'm sure it's good aside from that. I just highly recommend reading the sample before buying! Because this all happened by the first 10%.
Totally objectionable (see noncon- the kinda offensive kind) 100% cheesy porn-ish situations..,except.. well-written. No true character development. Ends at 54%
But.., ummm....l still kinda liked it? Ssshhhhhhhh. Definitely going on a guilty pleasures shelf....the writing was excellent(!), but the situations (semi) plot were strange..I'd say pwp, but there is a minimal plot....
Hot little fantasy that starts out very good indeed, but gradually gets more uninteresting as the writers keep tacking on disjointed scenes to add to the page count. Nowhere up to par with Reid's usual writing (Protection: so, so good. Have mercy).
Yeah, I didn't like this one. I found Brendan to be someone I wouldn't even be friends with in real life. From beginning to end, I found him extremely off-putting. Stephen, I had a hard time buying his assertiveness at times. He's a very passive person the rest of the time, so I struggled with that. The scenes felt like they were thrown in for a wow factor but were completely unbelievable. I'm a little ticked that I paid $2.99 for this mess.
I think Manhandled serves as an intriguing introduction to both of its authors. A lot was packed into a short number of pages and it felt like a complete story, but also like a very, very short novella. Don't get me wrong. Manhandled was hot, and I liked both characters being such stark contrasts to one another. Manhandled certainly delivers on its main premise...
But the fact that it was on the short side sort of prevented the sort of development of feelings that I tend to prefer, and haven't found in many of the Gay Romances I've picked up lately. It all boils down to preference, of course, but when it comes to love, I'm all about the hearts and rainbows and feelings in addition to everything else. So I would have preferred more romance being involved in their encounters as well as their relationship. Brendan was a very tough Alpha male, and Stephen was more of a nice guy trying to figure things out, but in the case of Brendan less would have been more because he came across as an overbearing and cliche example of manly manliness in both his point of view sections as well as his dialogue.
It's also worth noting that the excerpts afterwards were great. Both books look very promising and are definitely going on my TBR list. The first was from Rosemary O'Malley's forthcoming novel entitled The Red King. It's about a ruthless sort of pirate and a young almost-priest and is really tantalizing. The second was from S.A. Reid's forthcoming novel called Soulless. It seems to be about a vampire and a man who is slightly Dr. Frankenstein and somewhat Lord Byron. The first page was a little slow, but I love the ideas behind it and the cliffhanger left me really wanting more.
In conclusion, an enjoyable piece of short fiction with a steamy concept, but I'm definitely more excited about the full-length novels that both authors plan on releasing later in 2012.
Manhandled is a great title due to the edginess of the sexual encounters. One in particular rode the line of being questionable but managed to stay firmly on the side of consensual and ethical. The chemistry between Brenden and Stephen is apparent and makes scenes like that work.
Manhandled is a good, hot story. It pulled me in quickly and I felt like I got to know both men (which is not an easy thing to do in such a short story). S.A. Reid was a new author for me but one I'll look for again.
Loved the concept - liked some of the scenes but overall the inconsistencies in this one made it an o.k. only read for me. So much suspension of belief and things that seem out of character and implausible. The core of the two guys is quite good - and that I really enjoyed but the story felt solely like a couple of sex scenes with some words around them - it wasn't as harsh as I was expecting and the romance felt somewhat flat. Never did figure out how the two merge together other than sex really. Really like the author's other books and will definitely read more by her/them.
Straight and to the point. That what I think of this book. Yes, the sex scenes were smokin' hot, but I think the characters lacked depth.
I think this book could have been longer and the characters would of had more time to become more "human" instead of what seemed like random bodies having sex.
★★★☆☆ Quick lunch read. Brendan and Stephen meet in an unlikely place and then several more times. Sex is had, even though at least one of the scenes is highly unlikely but whatever. Light and fluffy and kills an hour or less. What I was looking for.
One may argue it's more of a non-con than dubcon, but I think the story was very clear about the bottom line of each sex scene from both sides. The sexual chemistry between the main characters was so intense it seemed to overcome any kind insecurity or misunderstanding. While highly unrealistic, the fantasy was well portrayed.
I've read enough reviews of this one to know what I"m getting myself into. I don't think I would have handled it as I did without knowing that this short novella teeters on the verge of consent.. be advised! also it's mostly an Erotica novella though it has a drop of romance in the end.
I actually liked it. I"m not sure I would have thought the same if it was a full length novel. But since it was short and hot I could somewhat appreciate it even if it's not my usual (or actual) taste.
Brendan and Stephan meet for the first time when Brendan pulls his into a broom closet mistaking him for his boyfriend who just complained how dull Brendan is in bed.. wanting to show how adventurous he actually is he plans on a little "play". It takes him time to realize Stephan ISN'T actually Kent.. But Stephan though frightened is HIGHLY aroused by the whole deal. While Stephan hasn't seen Brendan's face Brendan did, he shined a flashlight on him to verify him NOT being Kent.. but as they depart they don't expect to ever see each other again.
Their next accidental meeting takes place about a month later where Stephan gets to play the "hunter" and Brendan the "hunted". I think what made this novella more acceptable is the fact that both Brendan and Stephan are really into this role playing on the verge of consent thing. So when Brendan enjoys being taken by Stephan it somehow builds the way for them to try something more..
There is a little bit more to this novella. I"m not going to say more not to spoiler. I WILL say that though Brendan and Stephan's characters are very different they fit really well and even though Stephan is inexperienced I think for him it worked for the best as he was frightened to even try the first step and here Brendan pushed him to his limit and the arousal did it's "magic".
I SHOULD say I don't really "approve" of most of what happened between the two of them. While I did accept it as something that worked for them and I do realize it's a fiction story I think the authors were walking a thin line to rape which I don't find "entertaining" and I DON"T think should be addressed lightly.
I don't think I would have even given it a try if it wasn't by T. Baggins, as it seems she is making my more "adventurous" in what I read, yet this is still something I'm not really comfortable with and won't be something I delve myself into. A dip here and there but nothing more. Just for the sake of trying out and seeing what I think. Mostly I think "this isn't me" yet I think as a short novella it played out much better than I would have thought.
Good sexy story, maybe I was a little sad to see it end so soon, it’s a novella length and it’s basically all developed around 3 encounters between short-tempered Irish-American cop Brendan, and naïve and inexperienced doctor Stephen.
Brendan is hot, but not exactly a dream-date and indeed his current boyfriend dumps him; doesn’t matter Brendan was thinking to do the same, when that happens he needs to prove a point and he decides to kidnap Kent in a closet and teach him a lesson. But the one kidnapped is not Kent, but Stephen. This is an erotic romance bordering in erotica, and so the focus is the sex; it will not be a one night stands for Brendan and Stephen, but the authors didn’t indulge in the details of how they plan to date or the anticipation of their meetings, and instead focus on what they do when they are alone, i.e., sex!
For me it’s a first time of both authors, and there is definitely a lot I like in their styles, Brendan is a faulted hero, the one I preferred. There is no drama in this story, but you understand that Brendan has the potential to be a beautiful troubled romance hero. If I have to find a fault in him, and in the story, is the hint of threesome (m/m/m) at the end of the novel: I didn’t know enough the characters, and the evolution of their story, to be able to understand if they were ready for that.
I'm not exactly sure how to rate this one. It's definitely hot. the male characters had quite the chemistry going on, but then there some things that I wasn't totally comfortable with--not that that's necessarily a bad thing--but I did have some cringing moments while reading.
this is a very quick read. It's only about half of the kindle book, the rest of it is previews of the authors' upcoming books. I was a bit thrown from that, but that's ok. I thought that what was done with such a short story was good, but I wasn't exactly expecting the dub-con compontent of the book.
Now, I've read dub-con and non-con and have had no problem with it, but I guess I just was caught off guard, thinking I was getting a romance and ending up with that.
So, suffice it to say that there things that I really liked about this book, like some of the snarkiness. I mean with a line like: "...you're so boring in bed, I may as well date girls again.", how can you not have a good time reading it.
But, there were times when I wasn't feeling the book too. So, I guess I would say this is a 3-3.5 star book.
I've really liked the other stuff I've read from S.A. Reid so I hope to read more of her stuff in the future.
Manhandled is another winner from S.A. Reid, an author with a special talent for blending sizzling male/male sex with a page-turning plot. A cop and a doctor meet by chance and find themselves irresistably drawn to each other. They don't seem to have much in common besides lust but find a unique way to approach a relationship that works for both of them. It's a short read but super hot!
The two stories that follow are excerpts from longer novels but well worth the read. The Red King by Rosemary O'Malley is a swarthy pirate tale that promises to be an exciting and decadent read. It's the first I've read from this author but it definitely captured my interest in her work.
The excerpt from S.A. Reid's upcoming novel, Soulless is a tantalizing treat that whets the reader's appetite for more! It is a vampire story set in Victorian times, which makes it all the more taboo. A bitter, crippled scientist meets a strikingly handsome stranger who ignites feelings of desire he thought he'd lost when his manhood was destroyed. This has the makings of a relationship unlike anything I have yet to read and the outcome of which I couldn't possibly predict. I can't wait to pick up the full version of the novel!
I love when accidental love smacks you in the head. Bredan Daly wants to prove to his ex-boyfriend Kent that he is spontaneous and sexy fun in the sack (or in a broom closet as the case may be) so her plans a role play scenario bad cop vs. suspect. Very hot and sweet scene. But there is a little problem, it isn't Kent, but a new handsome doctor at the hospital company party that Brendan attacks 'Kent'. Oops, Dr. Stephen Gallagan has no idea what the heck is going on when some strong man grabs him en route to the toilet where he was planning to hide from all the persistent single ladies at the party. Stephen has a secret, he is a virgin and has almost no experience with anyone (male or female) so when he is 'forced' into some sex acts it makes the scene super sexy hot. This happens in Boston, although there is very little to situate the story. Short story and a kindle freebie. 2 stars
This story was ok. I really didn't like Brendan. I thought he was pretty much a total jackass throughout the entire book. His boyfriend, Kent, breaks up with him because he is boring, and their relationship has gotten stale. Brendan's brilliant plan to win him back is to pull Kent into a dark closet at one of his business outings and do a little role playing. Poor Stephen gets nabbed instead. I had a very difficult time believing Brendan didn't know it wasn't his intended target, but whatever. So he seems to forget about Kent and decides to make a go of it with Stephen. More Brendan jackassedness ensues, but Stephen is turned on by most of Brendan's behavior and keeps coming back for more.
I really didn't like the ending. There just seemed to be a whole lot missing, and I had a hard time caring about these characters.
The story suffers from its shortness (only 46 pages on my Kindle). There is no space to develop complex characters and harsh but realistic world that I admired in S.A. Reid previous books. "Manhandled" is an erotic short story that borders on porn. I like to think about it as a kind of BDSM role playing, only with the rules and agreement formed along the way.
Brendan Daly, the hot cop seeks to show his ex-partner he is not boring. In a case of mistaken identity he grabs the wrong guy, sexy young doctor Stephen Gallagan for an encounter in a dark broom closet in Manhandled. In time this leads to other encounters and a good story of how the two learn to communicate and develop a relationship. The story comes full circle to end in the same broom closet with a delightful twist at the end.
Hot, sexy taboo. Who doesn't like that? These two are super hot together and they're fun but this story ends rather abruptly. It unexpectedly jumps a year ahead and then ends quickly afterward. That is a bit disappointing as the reader could surely use more of these two together. And after all Kent said to Brendan when he left him, I would have liked to have Kent crawl back to find how hot Brendan is with Stephan. Overall, this is a definite hot read.
