"Communism is more than a political movement - it has become a new religion, replacing the Christianity of Holy Russia with a fanatical cult of Lenin."
Nikolai Alexandrovich Berdyaev was born at Kyiv in 1874 of an aristocratic family. He commenced his education in a military school and subsequently entered the University of Kiev. There he accepted Marxism and took part in political agitation, for which he was expelled. At twenty-five he was exiled from Kiev to the north of Russia and narrowly escaped a second period of exile shortly before the Revolution. Before this, however, he had broken with Marxism in company with Sergius Bulgakov, and in 1909 he contributed to a symposium which reaffirmed the values of Orthodox Christianity. After the October Revolution he was appointed by the Bolshevists to a chair of philosophy in the University of Moscow, but soon fell into disfavour for his independent political opinions. He was twice imprisoned and in 1922 was expelled from the country. He settled first in Berlin, where he opened a Russian Academy of Philosophy and Religion. Thence he moved to Clamart near Paris, where he lectured in a similar institution. In 1939 he was invited to lecture at the Sorbonne. He lived through the German occupation unmolested. After the liberation, he announced his adhesion to the Soviet government, but later an article by him published in a Paris (Russian) newspaper, criticising the return to a policy of repression, was tantamount to a withdrawal of this. He died at Clamart March 24, 1948.
Rich with insights and grounded in a deep understanding of Russian intellectual and spiritual thought, Berdyaev’s explication of Russian Communism as an essentially religious phenomenon contains convincing and powerful arguments. He takes aim at the discontinuity in Marxism, the awkward combination of rational materialism and messianic idealism, and shows how such a philosophy found fertile breeding ground in the messianic and absolutist mindset of Russian Orthodoxy and its godless counterpart - Russian Nihilism. Berdyaev is right to highlight the religious nature of Communism as its animating force, and his warning against raising relative social values into absolute ones is a good one to heed.
However, Berdyaev’s fundamental objection to Communism is impossible to relate to without sharing his Christian worldview. For Berdyaev, it is not the absolutism of Communism that is its core sin, but only that it has raised the wrong value as absolute. By his account, The Social Collective has replaced God as the object of worship in Communism, and all of Communism’s evils flow from this idolatrous act. Berdyaev wants to knock the social collective from its idolatrous pedestal and put the Christian God back in its place.
In the end, Berdyaev fails to take atheism and nihilism seriously on their own terms, and continues to strive for some absolute and all-encompassing system of values, a Christian one. Thus, Berdyaev follows strangely down the same ill-fated footsteps he has traced of Russian thinkers before him, yearning for the apocalypse with the illusory conviction that his God is the true one.

This is THE book which pointed me clearly to the 'great land' of Orthodoxy in the first instance, when it seemed to me, as Nietzsche put it when he read Dostoevsky, that his writing 'cries truth from the blood'. Since reading this book, and his critique of Leninism as a religious construct taking its queues from the Raskol' movement of the 1600's, I haven't really quite seen the world in the same way. Berdyaev is a truly insightful philosopher, one who is also an historian and lay-theologian of incredibly high calibre. He very keenly understands and feels the judgement implicit in the communist revolution, and wishes to bring the lessons of this discernment to bear on contemporary Christendom, in order to revive its own revolutionary value-creative witness within the world. Highly, highly recommended!
Brilliant work by russian maestro of religious phylosophy. It'll change your point of view about russian classics, I swear. Fresh thoughts about Gogol's mysticism, criticism of Tolstovism etc. Especially cogitation about literature of Dostoevsky and its huge value for russian future. Mustread.
