I thought this book had a very weak storyline and it didn't introduce the characters properly

Oh, how could I not like this book? Little bits of plot with gratuitous amounts of shooting, explosions and poison. I'm not being sarcastic, I actually think that's a good thing. Sometimes authors just write to show how artsy and hypothetical and metaphorical they can be, and all that crap, and sometimes I just want a book that gets to the point and doesn't bore me to death.
No, the book wasn't something I'll think back on in six months and reminisce about it's wonderfulness, but for the time I was reading it, I liked it. I will, however, remember somewhere around that time that the author should be writing another book and will look forward to it.

I received an ARC of the book, and some of my complaints may, indeed, be fixed/improved with the final copy. This is a sequel to a book I hadn't read, so perhaps that's why I had so much trouble engaging in the story, and keeping track of the many characters. The biochemist Emma Caldridge searches for rare minerals in the "blue holes" beneath the sea adjacent to a tropical island.

Voodoo bokors (priests), poison-seeping trees, undersea monsters that capture boats(or are they weird gaseous eruptions?), arms dealers, undetectable guns/bullets, oh--and a deadly untreatable sleeping sickness disease.

There is almost too much going on to keep the story straight. Much of the plot remains unexplained, too--the deadly disease disappears as mysteriously as it appears, the monster isn't revealed, the minerals to fight aging seem to be unaccounted for at the end of the book. But the biochemist Emma Caldridge (who also happens to be a kick-ass security expert-for-hire) manages to thwart the arms dealers and survive shoot outs, car wrecks, boat attacks, and a near plane crash.

This was nothing compared to her first book, Running From the Devil, or even her second novel, Running Dark. It took too long to reach the plot and didn't keep me interested until the last 50 pages or so. I finished it only because Freverletti is one of my favorite authors, otherwise it would have been dropped a long time ago!

Chemist Emma, and crew are back in another adventure in this series featuring a security firm called Darkview. This time Emma is sourcing a rare mineral found in a dark hole in the ocean off a tropical island close to the Bermuda Triangle. The mineral is used for more than clean cosmetics however and soon assassins, a Russian mobster and other assorted characters are aiming to stop Emma's work and secure the mineral which is used to make an undetectable bullet/gun.
The good:
-First time reader of this series, I found Emma and the Darkview crew to be strong characters with skills. There's not a lot of comic relief or any characters who need 'rescuing' - which is refreshing.
-The story refers to other adventures, but this book can be enjoyed as a standalone.
-There's a LOT going on...which can be a good thing (a la James Rollins adventures) or just a lot going on....for example, an intense tropical storm, voodoo, a mysterious illness, assassins, sea monster, etc. Some of the scenarios feel stereotypical (an intense tropical storm) while others - the rock band - make for good additions.
The not so good:
-The ending is pretty abrupt and would have benefited from a few more pages to reconnect the character arcs.
-Similarly, some characters are dispatched of fairly abruptly after big set ups.
-Not a lot of progression in the personal relationships of the characters (if readers were hoping for more).
-Spoiler free, the plotline of the mysterious illness remained largely a mystery to me even at the end. The origin was never clear, and some red herrings made it uncertain if this was drug induced or an actual transmissible illness.
Overall, this is a good action adventure. Though perhaps not as well paced as other options in the genre the core team makes the wildest scenarios work.

"Vor den Knochen wiederum lag eine Puppe. [...] Die Kehle der Puppe war aufgeschlitzt [...] In ihrer Brust steckte ein Küchenmesser." S.220

This is a pretty good fast paced mystery novel. Even if some supernatural elements were introduced, they were done in a way that was believable yet chilling. A good fast read and a hard book to put down. This is the first book I have read in this series and the plot and story stood on their own, didn't feel like I missed any information that might have been in previous books.

Fast paced and lots of suspence

There is trouble around every corner! Emma is in the middle of it all! Poison plants, creatures (maybe) attacking the boat, gun dealers and assassins, and a voodoo princess! What else can wrong on a small island with Emma and Sumner!

Great plot. Twists and turns to keep pages turning and excitement enough to keep focus page after page. Highly recommended.

Pandemics have been a subject of movies for the past decade. They are the nightmares of directors and the entertainment of the masses. The concept of mass sickness is something that children are taught in school, like the Black Death or Spanish flu. Not very many people think of what would happen if a pandemic were to hit the shores of the United States. Mass chaos and confusion would break out and people would learn what the phrase, ‘living hell’ meant. Pandemics are safer in movies and nightmares. It is the stuff that make medical doctors cringe and movies audiences hide under the sheets. This book is about a Biochemist named Emma Caldridge that finds herself assigned to a secluded island in search of new resources for a cosmetic company. Armed with her wits and past experience with dangerous assignments, her current location seems like a mini vacation. Although she predicts a few weeks of work and leisure she is soon faced with the presence of a mysterious voodoo priestess. As the weeks progress Emma is perpetually threatened with death and quickly is presented with a mysterious illness that is plaguing the local inhabitants. One by one people are falling asleep and not waking up. As people fall prey to this coma like illness, Emma is threatened by another person who seeks the same resources. Will Emma fall prey to this potential sleep pandemic? Will she discover who is behind the potential pandemic and why they are after the same resources as she is?

This book was a new type of read for me. It was very interesting and covered topics that I don’t normally read. I found the story to be smooth sailing and full of action. I thought all of the characters were well thought out and the story came to a complete end. With that I would like to say that I did find the book to be a little confusing at times and found myself having to go back to find out who the book was referring to. I felt like there was a lot of jumping around from one person to another. It felt at times that Emma was not the main character of the story and that also threw me for a loop. I hope with future books the author tries to avoid this. Overall I still recommend this book. It could use a little work, but it still was a great story.

I so wanted to like Jamie Freveletti’s DEAD ASLEEP. She has a terrific reputation and a broad fan base. And certainly any writer who takes on Ludlum’s Bourne series must be very good.

The first of her thrillers I’ve read, DEAD ASLEEP hits all the right genre notes—break-neck pace, first-class heroine and hero (two of each!), villains who will stop at nothing, exotic ports of call, and a potentially world-changing threat at the plot’s core.

Yet it all fell flat for me due, I think, to too many easy explanations and a few opportune coincidences. The action all takes place in the Caribbean, but on several islands, and on many occasions characters seemed to be able to get from one to another quite easily, even by boat, as if they were only a few miles apart. When her secondary heroine, Carol Stromeyer, just happens to have a BMW M5 with a custom gun box on a different island from where her company Darkview has temporary Carib headquarters, my sense of disbelief, suspended by only threads at this point, began to loom in earnest. At another point an emergency landing spot is easily found for an aircraft in distress. Coincidentally, it’s so close the plane reaches it just minutes later without a course correction. And the subplot—the subject of the book’s title—though explained away at the end, was never resolved satisfactorily for me.

DEAD ALSEEP is worth a look, but have a chute packed in case you can’t suspend your disbelief either.

10/10/14 From what I have read so far, I can Infer that the rest of the story will have a good storyline. In the story, Emma Caldridge finds a dead body hanging from a tree. Soon before the incident, Cameron Sumner returns home to his beach house after he goes to a club. A woman at the club told him not to go home, which he reluctantly agrees to. He doesn't listen. His two dogs follow his car up his driveway, up to his house. He is about to open the door when his one dog barks. This keeps happening,so he eventually goes to the back of his house, and walks in, his dog at foot, and sees a red LED lighting system. He doesn't think at all, and runs back into the laundry room right as the bomb explodes. the woman hanging from the tree turns out to be the same woman who told him not to go home.

10/17/14 from the little (ten) pages I read, I could infer that it was going to be a good book. Again. While Emma is on one of her expeditions in the jungle, she is attacked by a man with a machete. She can outrun him, but she can never seem to outrun the man, until she gets back to her Jeep, in which he dispersal. My readings ended at Emma and one of her friends talking about blue algae. I didn't find any quotes particularly interesting and/or funny. I would recommend this book to the avid mystery/murder book reader. Or Kevin.

There is action in this book right up to the last minute. I was surprised to be so close to the end and there was still no resolution - I started to think this might have a "to be continued" statement at the end but no, it ended just fine.

This is the fourth in the thriller series about Biochemist Emma Caldridge, a very independent and fearless woman. Emma is doing some research on a Caribbean Island, a very exclusive one with homes (mansions) owned by wealthy and well-known people. Emma does not believe in voodoo or zombies but is faced with a priestess who seems to be out to scare or maybe even kill her. She wants to know why.

I'm glad that I was at a program with Ms. Freveletti where she described the manchineel tree as a tree that actually exists because I would have found it hard to believe! I think it would have been wise to put that, and the research about the disease that hit the islanders, in an author's note at the end of the book for those who didn't have the chance to hear Ms Freveletti in person.

There are plenty of action scenes and a bit of back and forth with Darkview and the hunky and capable Sumner shows up too.

Dead Asleep

by Jamie Freveletti

Freveletti gives us a professionally written mystery/suspense tale (as always), but one that verges on the paranormal. Her descriptions of the island are vivid and her characters are engaging and intriguing, especially the voodoo priestess. For those who must find fault, her protagonist, Emma, could be termed a bit formulistic. (She approaches the supersleuth, popular for those understandably wanting a strong female role.)

Nevertheless, the plot proceeds in a fast-paced, suck-you-into-the action way. The author keeps us interested and involved. We feel the mystery is lessened for those readers with a good knowledge of psychotropic drugs, but this is a minor (almost nit-picking) flaw. Dead Asleep will keep you awake. It is a good read, and good ride all the way to the end where—well, read the book.

Emma Caldridge is a chemist on an exclusive Caribbean island gathering plant samples for her client who is making a new anti-aging cream. Unfortunately, there are people on the island who are out to kill her including a voodoo priestess and her machete wielding cohort and gun runners. The gun runners also want the plant samples to create ammunition that will go undetected through airport security. On top of that, her neighbor is a world famous rock star whose band member is asleep and can't wake up. A sleeping sickness begins to sweep the island resulting in a quarantine. How will Emma be able to meet the deadline of her contract without catching the sleeping sickness, getting cursed by the voodoo priestess, or killed by gun runners. If you want a fast paced, page turner, give "Dead Asleep" a read.

This one is PACKED, page after page, with plot twists, life threatening perils, and MacGuffins. It is abundently clear that Freveletti loves writing Emma Caldridge, and her devoted fans will not be disappointed in this fourth installment. Are some things hard to believe - yes. Does that mean poor writing - NO! She keeps her story moving at breakneck pace most of the time, and her skills show by keeping you with the story, turning every page. Ms Freveletti is damn good at what she writes. (I am eager to see how she handles the newest COVERT ONE novel). Escape into a fast-paced action thriller featuring a woman ready to kick butt and ask questions later.

Pleasantly surprised. I received this book free through a Goodreads Giveaway and this is the first Freveletti book I have read and she tells a good story. I was not sure how much I would I would enjoy a book that seemed to be based on voodoo. However, it is not a book based on voodoo (at least no more than a favorite Scooby-Doo episode might have been) and is really a pretty good thriller in the vein of Steve Berry, Harlan Coben and others. Well written, little to no language, sex or graphic violence (though the descriptions of the voodoo sacrifices were descriptive) and I found that it held my interest cover-to-cover.

Biochemist Emma Caldridge comes to a remote Caribbean Island
searching for minerals believed to reverse the aging process.
Instead she finds a place where he locl people speak in
wispers about sea monsters and voodoo curses. One by one
the islands inhabitants are descending into a paralyzing
sleep of the dead, victims of a long dormant and incurable
pandemic that could wreak unimaginable havoc if it escapes
from the island. Trapped by a global quarentine Emma must
get to the truth and stop the real evil before she succumbs to the death sleep. I did'nt care to much for this book from
Jamie Freveletti. It was'nt as good as her other ones and too
fictitious for me.

I was really hooked on the premise of Jamie Freveletti's fourth and newest book in the Emma Caldridge series, "Dead Asleep." It had all the trappings of a great thriller (a dangerous and secluded setting, high stakes, a race against time), but it read almost like a suspenseful mystery. The voodoo element gave the story a creepy edge, and the dichotomy between the protagonist's responsibility to her private company and her intrepid (and often reckless) allegiance with Darkview added a lot of depth. This would be a FANTASTIC book choice for a Caribbean vacation...particularly during the rainy season.

There are several elements in this tropical thriller--a mercenary who wants to sell bullets that are not completely developed--not metal--the tropical religion of Santeria, a woman scientist hoping to find anti-aging elements in the blue pools, and an epidemic of encephalitis. There is a voodoo woman, trees that can blind a person through their sap, and bad weather. Emma is a resourceful woman who teams up with Carrow, a rock band member to survive both weather and the dangers of man. It is fast paced and full of excitement.

Emma is doing research on an island when some sort of virus sweeps the place causing everyone to fall asleep. Those not falling asleep are under some crazy voodoo magic and trying to keep her away from the blue holes she's studying.

Some familiar faces show up to give her a hand just in time.

Like the other books in this series it's an exciting, fast paced thriller. She definitely keeps you on your toes!

Didn't really enjoy this book as much as the previous ones in the series. The action was very fast paced, leaving very little time for character development. After having read this book, I don't feel I know anything more about Emma or Sumner. The ending felt a bit rushed as well, and the sleeping sickness plot line just kind of ended abruptly and unsatisfactorily. That said, I'll still probably read the next book, hoping it returns to 4 star status.

Emma Caldridge is on a tropical Island collecting plants for a cosmetic company. A voodoo bokor appears and has with her a zombie like man with a machete who destroys part of her work before she can stop him. Dead Asleep had everything you could want, a tropical island, voodoo, dangerous arms dealers, and Rock Stars. There is plenty of action. This book gets better and more exciting the more you read!

It was an okay read. A little bit of mystery, a little bit of action. This is book #4 and I hadn't read any of the other books in the series, so while the story line moved fine (once it finally got going), I wonder if the characters would have come more alive had I read the others? And the ending was kinda strange to me. It had kind of a blunt ending. More like the end of a chapter than the end of a book.

DEAD ASLEEP

This was a first read from the Author for me and usually I don't jump into the middle of a series, I like to start from the beginning but this book was offered as an Amazon countdown deal so I figured I will give it a try. Yet I truly wasn't disappointed I felt I didn't really know both protagonists well to embrace them. There were some good action but the story fell flat on development of some very key characters. I will read the first books of this series.

At first I didn't think I'd be able to get into the book, but then I kept turning the pages and getting deeper and deeper into it. I read almost 1/2 the book in 1 night and finished the rest of it last night. I would gladly read more books by Jamie Freveletti. Once you're hooked you can't put it down.
