The Candy Shop War #2

Arcade Catastrophe

Rate this book
It will take more than magical candy to win this war!

Something fishy is going on over at the new amusement centre in Walnut Hills. The trouble seems linked to the mysterious disappearance of Mozag and John Dart, who have spent their lives policing the magical community. When Nate and his friends are asked to help investigate, they discover they discover kids feverishly playing arcade games in an effort to win enough tickets to redeem one of four stamps: jets, tanks, submarines and racecars.

Rumour has it that the stamps are definitely worth it. But what do they do?

The kids soon discover that the owner of Arcadeland is recruiting members for four different clubs. When each club is filled, he will begin his quest to retrieve a magical talisman of almost unimaginable power. With John Dart and Mozag sidelined, will Nate, Summer, Trevor, Pigeon and their new friend, Lindy, find a way to save the day?

I really enjoyed this book. I think that this book was a little better than the first book. I think that the theme of this book is to keep going in your struggles. For example when Mr White made the wax statues of the kid's, Nate Pigeon Summer Trevor and Lindy. The kid's kept trying to sneak into the magician's lair and destroy the figures. This is a reason that I think the theme of this book is not to give up. I think this book is cooler than the first because of the stamps that give the kid's magic powers.

titular-ish sentence:
p8: "...My parents would destroy me if I went back to that arcade...."

cement:
p148: Squealing and spinning, Claire tumbled down the porch steps, landing on the cement walkway that divided the grass yard.

This was so well done, considering that this was not a planned sequel. Props to Brandon for listening to the fans and coming up with this. I hope it isn't too much for wanting another, especially in light of the Camilla reveal.

First off, we all know how much I am in love with purple, so the cover itself was intriguing. The artwork is quality and fun, and the purple clinches it for me. And no, I'm not kidding. We really shouldn't judge books by their covers, but we all do it. And this quick judgment was spot on.

If you liked The Candy Shop War by Brandon Mull, you will enjoy its sequel Arcade Catastrophe even more. The level of intrigue and creativity is pushed farther taking the story in surprising directions.

According to my 13-year old, "The characters have better powers than in the first one." Who needs more motivation to get reading than that, right? Just so you know, he devoured the book in three days.

In honor of Halloween and Book Appreciation next week, I have a giveaway running on my blog for one copy of The Candy Shop War: Arcade Catastrophe beginning 10/31/2012 and ending 11/7/2012.

Enjoy!

My Thoughts-
Such a fun and perfect book for middle graders. I loved the first book and this one is just as exciting. We have a new villain, Mr. White, the brother of the previous bad lady in book one. He is able to use wax figures of people to control them. He is a great evil character who stops at nothing to win. As a reader, you know his threats towards our main characters are real. What is also fun is that the previous villain, Mrs. White, is also in this book. She is now Lindy, a young girl with no memory of her former deeds. I liked seeing her character revamped and the ability she now has to start over.

The quest for Uweya, an artifact of great magical powers, is at the heart of the book. It is fun to see the kids with their magic stamps with the abilities of flight, strength, speed and under water breathing. They have to use their powers to solve individual quests that lead up to the big one. I like how they use their wits and work together, even while on different teams.

The setting, an arcade, enough said, kids will relate.

Another score for Mull. 5 Stars!

I didn't like this one quite as much as the first- but maybe that's because I was reading this in between all my other books. This book pretty much followed the formula for the first one, but with a different villain, and a few extra magical candies and characters thrown in. It also seemed a little less believable with all these 11 year olds saving the day- but then again, we're talking about magical candy, and I love Harry Potter, so can I even really judge like that? ;). It's perfect for a younger audience, and while I didn't LOVE it as much as the first one, I'd still recommend it. Overall it's still a fun read, and my 8 year old loved it. I do love Brandon Mull's creativity and the unique world he's created!

5/23 Still like the first one better ;). But kids loved this one more than the first I think :)

Similar to the first book, the age of the kids didn’t fit with what they were able to do or the maturity of their decision making. That being said, this book had place where it was very hard to put down, especially at the end. I love the friendship aspect to the story. It shows how important it is to have good friends and to be a good friend. Definitely written for a young audience, this old person enjoyed it too.

The Candy Shop War: Arcade Catastrophe was a great sequel to it's predecessor in my opinion. What I really enjoyed was that I didn't have to go back and check the first book to fully remember everything that had happened. In other words, you can skip the first book and read this one without having major issues understanding the plot. Mull did a great job setting all the characters, setting, and plot up. I would recommend this book to anyone that wants to read something a little bit unique.

It was okay.

I was probably over-thinking it. I've been spending a lot of time thinking about story structure lately, and that might have unfairly colored my perception of this story. But I just kept waiting for something unexpected to happen. I kept waiting for a twist, or at the least, to use the vernacular from all the story-structure reading I've been doing, Plot Turn 2.

It was like I had rounded a bend in the road, and I could see the finish line up ahead, and I was thinking, "Oh boy, what's going to come between us and that finish line? Ninjas jumping out from the sidelines? Holes opening in the ground? Will we break both our legs and need to overcome our fear of dirtying our hands so we can hand-stand run to the finish? What will happen?!" And then I just ran across the finish line, and I found myself scratching my head, thinking, "That was IT?"

This is a sequel, by the way, to The Candy Shop War, which I LOVED. That book, in my opinion, was perfect Middle-grade Fantasy. The plot kept us guessing on several levels: What is really motivating the various players here? Whom should we really be trusting? And given the apparently inadequate tools at their disposal, how can the good guys stop the bad guys? The characters were interesting, the magic powers were fun. And then Plot Turn 2 happens.

Plot Turn 2 is the point toward the end of a story when everything goes wrong, when all seems to be lost. I've seen this described as "the jaws of defeat from which victory must be grasped". In Candy Shop War, it's appropriately dire: the villain has won the MacGuffin, which will grant her ultimate power, and all of the heroes have been neutralized (other examples of Plot Turn 2: Harry successfully navigates his way to the sorcerer's stone only to find Voldemort is already there! Wreck-it Ralph helps Venelope win the race, but just as she arrives at the finish line, it is overrun by Cy-Bugs, and her plans are crushed! Luke defeats Vader and becomes a true Jedi, only to be easily overpowered by the Emperor!). It leaves us breathless and anxious and emotionally invested, so the climax and resolution can feel so much sweeter (Harry uses the magical protection given him by his mother (hinted at earlier in the book) to overcome Voldemort/Quirrel and survive. Wreck-it Ralph remembers the alka seltzer stalactite from earlier in the movie and finds a last-minute alternative path to victory. All of Luke's earlier work on Vader, trusting in his humanity, finally wins him over, and he kills the Emperor). In Candy Shop War, it works beautifully. In Arcade Catastrophe, it just doesn't happen.

I kept waiting for something to go amiss with Nate's plans. SOMETHING needed to become more dire. And it never did! There was the finish line, and all the obstacles were out in the open, and sure, they were tricky, but Nate had an obstacle-handling kit, and it worked just the way it was supposed to.

I don't know - maybe Plot Turn 2 happened, and it just didn't sink in for me. Or maybe the book worked fine without it, and I'm judging it by my expectations rather than by the book's own merits.

My kids liked it (ages 6 and 8 - I read it to them). And scrolling through the reviews, everyone else seemed to like it.

It does have some fun magic going on. My six-year-old son in particular loved coming up with different combinations of stamps and conjecturing on which would be most useful in which situations. My daughter liked trying to guess what Uweya would be and how Nate might be able to use it against the bad guy.

So... fine. Whatever.

But what's up with setting up the deception about Lindy's identity, only to have it resolved with absolutely no drama or consequences later? Why even have her be Mr. White's brother if that relationship isn't going to influence the plot in any way?

And what was up with Roman?! The first chapter is about this kid, and we see how desperately he wants the stamp. Then Nate accidentally steals it from him, crushing his hopes. And we think, "Oh man, he's going to hold a grudge!" And then they're pitted against each other on a mission, and again, Nate beats him and steals even more of his powers AND almost kills him. "Ohhhhh man!" we think, "He is going to be SO MAD! Where is this going to go?!" And then... Roman never appears again in the book. Why start the book with this character and then forget about him at the 75% mark? And did Summer or Pigeon end up having a meaningful role? Did they do more than fail to accomplish something and then get neutralized?

I need to stop writing this. I'm liking it less the more I think about it.

Three stars. Better than A World without Heroes, but otherwise my least favorite of Mull's books.

Rekordy, punkty i magiczne stemple.

Candy Shop War Arcade Catastrophe by Brandon Mull
5 STARS

I was excited to read Candy Shop War Arcade Catastrophe. I admit that I do own Candy Shop War but have not read it, but I am going too. I loved Fablehaven series. If your a Brandon Mull fan you will enjoy this book.
In Candy Shop War Arcade Catastrophe its starts off by kids spending all thier money to try and get a prize stamp. No one knows what they do or why thier is only 4 of 4 different stamps. They cost the most tickets of any prize at the arcade.
Roman's two friends got the jet stamp while he was grounded from spending his life savings of 400$ at the arcade.
Nate, Trevor,Summer and Pigeon are back. They get told by these two twin dudes that thier friends John who is a police detective of mages and his boss Mozag are missing.
They tell them to ask thier friend at the Candy Shop to verify these facts.
All they know is it involves the arcade and that they can't go in they would be noticed right away.
The kids agree and accept money and camera to try and find out whats going on with the arcade.
Nate plays basketball arcade next to Roman and he makes bets with him. Nate loses two games. Then Cris Roman's friend gets on the bet too. Cris and Roman let on that they were trying to save up to get something and Roman already has 40,000 tickets.
Nate chews a piece of gum and wins the bet. Then Cris makes another bet at the bigger basketball court and Nate whens again.
They figure out that it has to be the stamps that Roman is trying to win. So they make plans to come back tomorrow and win as much as possible.
This book is full of drama, adventure, fun and tough choices they have to make. Nate, Trevor,Summer, and Pigeon have candy that gives them abilties. Like to be perfect.
They also run across more powers like flying.breathing in water, fast, strong.
Kids have to decide what is wrong and what is right. Who is the bad guy and who are the good guys. What would you be willing to do so you can keep flying.
I did not want to put the book down untill I finshed it. It is an exciting adventure that the whole family can enjoy. I will look forward to reading lots more books from Brandon Mull in the future.
I was given this ebook to read in exchange of honest review from Netgalley.

Brandon Mull is getting better and better! The Arcade Catastrophe is packed full of good, clean excitment and suspense. The story was engaging, the message was positive, and the characters are strong, honorable, and brave.

If you haven't read The Candy Shop War, you absolutly need to read it first. The Arcade Catastrophe references back to that first book several times, and some key plot points are dependent on a knowledge of what's happened in the past. This time, Mazog and John Dart are missing . . . and for those of you who are still uninitiated to the world of magical candy, this is a VERY bad thing. With the worlds most powerful magician and the worlds best magical law enforcer M.I.A, there isn't much to keep magical bad guys from doing what they do best--using kids to do their dirty work by giving them magical powers! That's why is lucky for the safty of the whole planet that Nate, Trevor, Summer, and Pigeon are once again up to the task of beating the bad guys and saving the day. Mr. Stott is back to help, and we get to meet several new friends too, including Lindy, Mr. Stott's adopted daughter--who has a secret past that must be kept from her at all costs!

Not long after I got into the book I began to get nervous about an unresolved ending . . . because of Harry Potter it's my personal mission to avoid reading any book series until all the books have been written, thus avoiding the agonizing wait for a new book to resolve the conflict. The first Candy Shop War was written as a stand alone story--Brandon Mull wasn't planning on more. It received such good feedback though that he found more story to tell, and I was worried that his "more" would become a series like Fablehaven where you don't learn the whole story until you've read all the books. I needn't have worried, everything is wrapped up with a nice neat bow at the end. This time around though, there is the briefest of set ups for the next story--and I can handle that.

I'm excited for my kids to read The Candy Shop War, and I give my highest recommendation that your family join in on the fun!

The Arcade Catastrophe by:Brandon Mull
Fantasy

The Arcade Catastrophe is a great sequel to the book The Candy Shop War. This book is about 5 friends Nate, Trevor, Summer, Pigeon, and there new friend Lindy who in the last book was an old evil magician who tried to find the fountain of youth to take control of the world ( she is a really powerful magicain but appartenly the magic works only/better when you are younger.) They are on another adventure to try to stop and save there friends Mozag and John Dart from Lindys brother who is yet another evil magicain but is looking for a much bigger prize then anyone could ever think of ( and a way bigger prize then what Lindy was trying to get. Uweya is what it is called and it is a ball sized version of the earth execpt whoever has it can basically control the world! So Nate and his friends are secertly going behind Mr.White Lindys brothers back.) But of course the blood runs in the family. Mr.White also uses kids to get what he wants. He builds an arcade and is giving a few selected kids powers as a prize and Nate and his friends are trying to figure out what has happened to Mozag and John while trying to fight the ever so powerful magican Mr.White.

I rated this book a 5 because this book was really good and so was the first one (I do think there is going to be a 3rd book because Lindy has 3 siblings and the book gave me a foreshadow kind of hint/clue.) I think that this book has lots of details and that things get kind of confusing but mostly it clears up at the end and the author does a pretty good job at keeping the suspense and mystery till the end. The good thing and what I like about this book is that it does not have a cliff hanger at the end. I like all the suspense but I am a type of person who like can't stand when there is something that is not answered and stuff. Thats why I "hate" series because I have to read all the books and I absolutly HATE it when I have another like year for the next book of the series or whatever to come out!

(Before you read this book review I highly suggest you read the first book) The theme of my book is in spite of obstacles you can achieve your goal. The setting of this book is mainly at an arcade.this story is told by a narrator aou of the story (3rd person point of view) which actually makes a lot of differences. There are six major characters. The six are Nate, Summer, Trevor, Pigeon, and Lindy, and to those who don’t know, Lindy is Ms. White. A year after the gang defeated Ms. White and turned her into a kid like them, they had seen two men looking at them while using candy magic. The two men were actually part of the group with Mozag and John Dart, they were the Battatios. They told them that John and Mozag haven’t been seen since last month when a mysterious arcade had been built. The Battatios told them to investigate. Jonas White ,Ms. White’s brother, had been a magician and are using kids to capture a valuable item.

This book is great, if you have money that you want to spend on a book, this is the book. The action “scenes,” are intense like the one I am about to tell you. There was a part in this story when one of the Battatios’ and Trevor went to get Mozag, John, and Pigeon out of Mr. White’s sanctum, but Jonas White had some engineered people to beat the up. There was another time when when the jets and a few artificial people had to fight through a whole army of some type of terracotta warriors which were easy to kill but there was a great multitude of them so if they were going to die it would be of exhaustion. The “Blue Falcons” can be quite handy when they are in dire situations as shown by these examples here. All though not as good as the first one I am excited to see if Brandon Mull makes another book for this series. In all seriousness I highly recommend this book and….BYE!

Tons more magic and tons more fun, as only Brandon Mull knows how to deliver.

I really enjoyed Arcade Catastrophe, the follow up to The Candy Shop War. It never ceases to amaze me how wildly profound Mull's imagination is. He constantly comes up with new and inventive ways to break reality barriers and create fun for young readers. My only issue in this one, which is something Mull has a tendency to do, is create TOO many characters. It becomes difficult to follow them all, at times. Regardless, this was such a fun read and sequel! Seeing our heroes return to take on the supremely evil Jonas White, now with Lindy by their side was simply awesome.

Four and a half stars from me!
