A novel for the many millions of fans of ABC's hit drama, Revenge, that introduces the loyal audience to a new cast of characters assembled by Revenge Guru Satoshi Takeda. In SCHOOLED IN REVENGE , the story will originate in Revenge School where we will meet a new group of Revengers who set off on their own mission. Ava Winters, young beautiful and morally wronged (reminiscent of Emily Thorne) will be introduced to four strangers who are in a similar plight. The group will set out to seek Revenge before Takada deems them ready. Their mission takes place in Napa, California.
I LOVE REVENGE. Schooled in Revenge centers around Ava Winters, another revenger of Takeda. But Emily Thorne gets to appear somewhere in the book. The feels.
The cover is perfection. The title is perfection. Everything is perfection. Except that it’s not yet available! Please exist in my hands.

First off, let me make this clear. I love the Revenge TV show. It's had its ups and downs but always comes back stronger than before. So, naturally, when I saw that a book was being published about it I had to get my hands on it asap. Then I heard that Emily Thorne is only a minor character in the book and my enthusiasm died down.
I'm on a mission to read the books I already own this year so Schooled in Revenge's turn came. It's about a girl called Ava Winters who is (you guessed it) training to avenge her parents' death on Takeda's island. There are some other people on the island as well. It later turns out that they're all together for a reason: they have a mutual enemy. Their training ends prematurely and they are facing some serious danger.
Now, my main problem with the book was how annoying the characters came across. They behave childish and are so centered on their own troubles that they don't seem to care for anything else. I read over half of the book and just wanted it to be over. Then came an unexpected twist that slightly redeemed it in my opinion but as quickly as my hope rose, things came down to a terrible ending. I couldn't believe it. It's such an open ending and I can't find information on whether there is going to be a second book. I hate cliffhangers!
To sum up, this had the potential to be a great thriller but it isn't one. I appreciate the idea, but the execution was terrible. I feel like this was only published to make some money on the show's name. It failed to met my expectations. Every single episode has more thriller elements and is better than the entire book. Might have been better if Emily had a more important role. And if Takeda didn't had such an air of mystery about him. Makes me wonder, why does he train all this people in revenge???

Disappointing. I'm glad it was really cheap. Going to my unhaul pile.
~Recommendations~
Let's just skip this part. I can't really recommend a book I strongly disliked.
LOOK WHAT EXISTS! Do you know how happy that makes me, #1 Revenge fan, Rosie Rose? (Did I really just call myself that?)
I WANT IT. Now. Someone give it to me, please? I need it, like, now. I'm only a kid, c'mon. You can't let a kid suffer until the end of August, can you?
so I love the tv show, and was really hoping to like this book. but really it just seemed like a wannabe revenge, its like they took the concept of revenge but made it lame :( also from the ending it seems like there will be a sequel, but I probably wont pick it up
Pretty lame, mostly because it takes itself so seriously. I kept picturing everyone sitting around giving Bette Davis looks or twirling handlebar mustaches, muttering "revenge" over and over (and over and over and over and over). In my mind, it might as well have been in caps and italics every time (an example from page 81: "The only thing left was REVENGE.").
It's a seriously ridiculous conceit that sounds kind of cool in theory, like a superhero training academy, but comes across as totally stupid when put on paper. These kids literally are at a school for REVENGE, as if it's something one can be taught, like spelling or algebra, or practiced. It's far less awesome than the image I had in my head, which was basically along the lines of the X-Men: First Class film.
No, this is a lazy attempt at expanding the ABC series universe and nothing more. It's not awesome, it's not even all that entertaining because it's so angsty and melodramatic that I wanted to slap all the characters (of which there are far too many, including some unnecessary ones) and tell them to shut up and quit whining. It's also clearly written by a television writer, because every chapter ends the way a segment of the show would end, like with some bit of revelatory information. The chapters are also obscenely short, typically only comprised of one scene, and flashbacks are utilized far too often. I get that this style is right in line with how the series is presented, but this is a book and should be treated differently than a teleplay. And, to top it all off, it ends on a cliffhanger, as if we're supposed to wait until next week for a new episode. Everything wraps up too quickly and too neatly after 200+ pages of nonsense, including a completely useless appearance by Emily from the series, with the author eschewing all depth and development in favor of repetitive scenes of the characters planning their REVENGE or reliving memories that have nothing to do with the situations they find themselves in.
Let's talk about the characters, actually. Apparently Jesse Lasky learned nothing from the fan backlash of Revenge's second season. We care about Emily's revenge. Her story is intriguing and relatable on a huge scale, and we understand her need for REVENGE because the atrocities committed against her and her father are truly horrific. I mean, you don't get much bigger than blaming a guy for a terrorist attack on his own countrymen. We see how truly bad the people Emily takes down are, so we root for her. In the second season, when the scope of the show expanded to include several characters exacting REVENGE, it became less interesting. A conceit like Revenge is successful when it's focused. This novel is more along the lines of season two: too many characters we don't give a shit about (I'm looking at you, Ashley) righting wrongs done to them in the past. That's what this book is. There are five trainees, plus one Aiden-esque character, whose REVENGE plots are all connected, in a totally convoluted way that I'm still not 100% on, I might add. That's too many characters. Make the book about Ava in the same way the show was about Emily, and this would have been more successful... it wouldn't help a lot of the other issues, like the uneven tone and writing, but it would solve characterization and development problems.
Here's to hoping that Lasky or whoever else at Hyperion learns from the mistakes of this book if a second one ever happens. I did still have fun reading it, once I accepted its stupidity, but I can't help but think this could have (and should have) been so much better.
Overall I would've given it 3.5 stars even though I wanted to bump it up to 4 for the ending. The first 50 or so pages aren't that attention-grabbing but by the middle, it really picks up and the ending had so many twists! But I found some of the characters actions irritating and foolish especially considering their circumstances and the ending felt a bit unresolved (unless a sequel is coming) but not enough to hurt my enjoyment of the book too much.
Didn't really like the first part of the book. It was like it was written for 15 yo girls. Or maybe I just couldn't relate to the main character who was a weakling. But the second to last part was pretty good. Action packed, full of revelations and character growth. You just gotta love Takeda.
This was an impulse purchase from the Dollar Tree, and I have never seen the TV series, so perhaps I'm not the target audience for this story. Having said that, I must admit that it did surpass my (exceedingly low) expectations. Yes the plot was predictable. Yes the writing was awkward at times. Yes it often relied on the "big message" delivered by the stereotypical mysterious eastern sensei. But it only took a couple of hours to read and it did have its moments. So it was worth my dollar - just don't pay more than that.
When I read the comments, I don't get most of them. If you read this book as it has nothing to do with the original series, is very enjoyable. I liked it and got me hooked.
I think there's something wrong with the plot since it kind of gets...unresolved, maybe on purpose for a sequel I'm not sure exists. I'll check.
This is my favorite book EVER! What's the sequel called, and what happens with Courtney, Jon and Ava? Will they confront Marie and Daniella? Who's revenge will be next? I loved it and can't wait to see what comes out next.

Wow...if I could get my money back I would. I understand that the author is one of the writers in the Writing Room for Revenge. I get that he took it upon himself to create a proposal, write the book, and submit the draft to Hyperion. That takes a great deal of guts! Especially since his comfort zone is writing scripts - not novels. That's fine. And it's not that I haven't read books that are far worse. Those books tend to get 1 star and are never finished. Luckily they are few and far between - as are 2 stars.
So, what is my issue with this novel? First there were problems the author could not control. The formatting in my Nook book was atrocious. Words that should have been capitalized weren't. Words that should not have been capitalized were. Grammar made me question whether or not a copy editor had taken a look at the final digital draft before it went live. Again, the author had nothing to do with these issues - they are Hyperion's problem. And boy did it make the book difficult to read.
My biggest concern, however, is that the eBook cost $8.99. This book that read more like a $2.99-$5.99 book cost me $9. The story was convoluted. The characters were not well developed. And, all in all, the book read like something a first time novelist writes, finishes and then sends to an editor not something polished and ready for major publication.
As much as I hate to write scathing reviews for a first time novelist, especially knowing I will be one eventually, I cannot recommend this book as one you purchase unless it is on sale for less than $8.99. Hopefully the next book in the series, and I am sure there will be one, is more polished with far more characterization and a firmer plot. That will mean the author has learned from his first experience which will make this waste of my money worth it in the end.
Because in the end, I did read the entire thing and will most likely read at least the sample of the next novel if only because I like the world and I know the author can do better.
**Full disclaimer, I have already watched the Revenge series on TV.** I LOVED this book. Of course I will never know if I liked it so much because I had watched the show...or if I would have liked it without watching the show. Schooled In Revenge was a quick read for me and I found it extremely enjoyable. I had a very hard time putting it down, so I read it in just a few sittings. I thought that the author captured the tone and action of the TV show wonderfully! To those that pick this up expecting it to be just like the show: the story is NOT about the main characters of the TV show. Emily Thorne does make a few appearances, but this story follows five new individuals as they train with Takeda to get revenge on those that wronged them. When I read the very last page, I immediately wanted a book 2! I hope the author is working on one!! I highly recommend this to anyone that has read the show, or anyone that likes stories about revenge. My favorite excerpt from the book: "Some things cannot be fixed," Takeda said, stopping at her side. "We can only let them go."
I was going to give it 2 stars but I'm disappointed, so 1 star.
I had high expectations from this book. I mean you're talking about Emily Thorne's revenge and the place she went to and all that and this is what you give us? I was on the third last chapter and I was like the book is ending but no revenge at all? Then it was kindly mentioned in the book how revenge had already taken place. Is that what you write a book for? It's not even a book, it's a novella.
Are you going to turn it into a series now?
Yes? - Why the hell not take more time and write it all at once instead of releasing a zillion novellas?
No? - Why, then, introduce all those useless characters?
I liked the writing but was that the revenge? Eh!
Still, I'm going to read if you write any other revenge novel, I think.
I was really excited to read this book because i love the tv series and was hopeful that the book would be just as amazing. However, I didn't enjoy it as much as I thought I would, it was still a quick enjoyable read but it didn't meet my expectations.
I think it would've been a better story if it focused mainly on Ava's revenge, like on the show how it focuses on Emily's revenge. Because there were so many characters in this book and I found most of the characters really annoying and way too serious.
Emily's small part in the book was useless, but it was still good to have her in the book even if it was short.
By the ending it seems like there will be a sequel, if there is I hope they make it better because it wasn't a horrible book, just a book that I think had so much potential but didn't reach it.
I'd probably give this a 2.5, but I'm rounding up because of how much of a die hard revenger I am. The entire time I was reading I couldn't help think how well this could have been done as a mini-series during Revenge's run--it just didn't quite work out so well in novel form. The pacing and short chapters threw me off at times and it was hard to really get to know the characters. I also thought Emily's cameos were a bit pointless--I'd rather she hadn't shown up at all--and I was really hoping for more in-depth interaction with Takeda since he was such a mysterious character on the show. All this being said, though, I feel like I need more because there is so much left unanswered and revenge is like crack.
Schooled in Revenge by Jesse Lasky is about revenge and reveals the story of a girl who seeks revenge on her father's death. Ava waters is upset about the death of her father so she goes to a site where the best learn how to get revenge on things. On her journey of avenging her father ava makes many friends and she gets help from a former student Emily Thorne. Emily has become one of Avas friends and she pushes her to finish what her father has started. This book is full of action and it is just a really good book. This book is an easy read and I recommend it to anyone who loves adventure and action.
2.8 Stars I didn't care for the many multiple POV's. Also the flashbacks seemed to be memories at first then would also start jumping POVs which was very confusing. I enjoyed the short chapters because of how this book was done, but I find them lacking for character development and our interest. I would like to know what happens next, but it looks like that's not an option?... Kinda sucks. It was a pretty simple read. Simple writing. No where as good as the show, but it seemed to have potential.
This book was a pretty good companion to the tv series. It had different characters, so didn't further the story of the tv show, but it took place at the same training location and had the same theme as the tv show. I didn't especially connect with any of the characters, but the book was fast paced and kept my interest. I would probably read a sequel, but I wouldn't rush out to buy it.
I was slightly disappointed with this book. Since I really enjoy the show, when I found out a book was being written I was excited to read it. Once I began reading I realized that the book was a bit different than the show. I think the book started out slow and in my opinion it wasn't until two thirds of the way through that it started to get good.
