Marisa Turner has wanted her brother's best friend, Luc, forever, but she also wants a baby and it seems Luc isn't up to the challenge. She has to choose between the man she loves and the family she hopes to have. Fortunately, there's another man waiting in the wings to make her baby fantasy a reality. Luc Spencer is tired of hearing about marriage and babies. He loves Marisa, but he can't promise her forever. After two years together, she tells him it's over. He's not worried, he believes she'll be back. But what will happen when he finds out there's another man waiting to take his place?
Cheryl Douglas is a USA Today Bestselling author who kicks back in the country surrounded by farm land and nature. Her life revolves around family, country music, sports, travel, caffeine, chocolate, and deadlines.
My Summary: Marisa Turner is a successful stylist to her famous brother Trey, has great friends, and a supportive family. So now, she is ready to settle down, get married and have babies. Marisa has watched her brother and best friends' all find that kind of happiness with envy. Now, she wants a commitment and Luc isn't ready to give it to her, but another man is.
Luc Spencer is, Marisa's brother, Trey's manager and best friend. He was hesitant to get involved with Marisa in the first place, but he fell for her anyway. And he fell hard. So, what's the problem? Luc has sworn not to marry and have kids. Because Luc won't bend on this issue, Marisa ends their relationship. It drives Luc wild seeing her with another guy. Can he let go of his past so he can have a future with Marisa before it's too late?
My Take: I've been enjoying reading this series, but I wasn't really excited about reading Luc's story. He's been my least favorite character in the series up to this point, but I'm pleased to say that my mind has been changed! After reading this book, I have a much better understanding of what makes Luc tick.
Marisa has been a favorite character since I began the series in Shameless. In fact, Shameless starts just as Marisa and Luc break up. So, we get to see what happens surrounding their situation up until this point. Marisa has pretty much let Luc determine the path in their relationship in the past. She's loved him since she was a teenager, so naturally has just followed where he led. So, I loved seeing her stand up to him and prepare to move on without him. Way to go girl!
Luc is a very complex man. He's successful, determined, brutal, respected, and intense. I enjoyed learning more about Luc's background. It helped me understand why he approached his relationship with Marisa the way he did. There is a big surprise that happens in this book too. I had a feeling there was a deeper reason as to why Luc felt so strongly against marriage and family, but it turned out to be more than I had thought. I'm really liking the direction the series is taking with that storyline.
Ultimately, I'm thrilled with how the story ended! I was also so happy to see the other characters, who I have developed soft spots for. I love to watch how characters develop within a series. I'm also really looking forward to future books in the series. There are some characters that we are slowly being introduced to that have a lot of potential for good, steamy, stories!
So far I've enjoyed all three books in the series. I'd say that Trey is probably still my favorite, but Luc's coming in close behind. This series is perfect for you if you're looking for a nice romantic read that has just the right amount of spice.
Marisa Turner has loved Luc since she set her eyes on him when her brother brought Luc to visit. Marisa wants it all, marriage, babies, the whole nine yards and Luc doesn't, so breaking her heart she breaks up with him.
It's been months and she tries to tell herself she's moving on with Tim, but she's lying to herself, she's just in love with Luc as she was before, but she can't let her heart be trampled again, that relationship will give her only half of her dreams and that's not enough.
Luc's never been happier than with Marisa, with her gone he's irritated, jealous and pissed off. Just the thought of her new man Tim drives him nuts, let alone seeing him. Battling with wanting Marisa back and wanting her happiness Luc can't give up but, he also can't bring himself to get married, let alone have a child. So who is going to give in?
The ruthless Nashville country music manager gets his ass handed to him in love by the sister of one of his stars and his best friend, and it's so entertaining to read! What I loved about Ruthless was Luc's desperation to have Marisa back, trying seduce her, intimidate her and plain out manipulating the situation to get her back. All is fair in love and war, right?
It's absolutely sexy when a guy can't get his mind off a girl, knowing she's the one and seeing her with another man while she's trying to get over him. Hot! Ruthless really is seriously hot, with all the yumminess of a couple who can't keep away from each other, even though know they should. I love it how Cheryl Douglas can make me so invested in the couple, but still wondering if they should be together as they genuinely want different things, even with all the love and lust between them.
I have to say I have bit of a book crush on Luc - the man is seriously sexy, possessive, passionate and bit ruthless. A mix that makes him so yummy to read! He's completely invested in seducing Marisa and not taking no for an answer - of course he's burning himself in the process. With his past he's dead serious about not getting married and having kids, but seeing Marisa gone and having his past revisit him something finally begins to give a little. And that is truly entertaining to read!
I highly recommend this series! But Ruthless can be definitely read as a single as well. You do meet Luc and Marisa in Nashville Nights books one and two as well... but reading their story was what I had been waiting for since I met them in Shameless.
It fell flat for me. After being secondary characters in the first two books, I was curious to see how the story of Marisa & Luc would play out. This felt too wishy-washy on both their parts, too rushed with Nikki, "I hate you, you dead-beat Dad." And just a few short days later, "I love you, Dad." Really put a damper on wanting to continue the series.
If you haven’t read book 1 please so do it will help you better understand other characters and back story. This book made me cry and when a book can do that, it is indeed a keeper. Please read this book because it is worth your time I also recommend the whole series.
My Review: I really am enjoying this series. It's simply a fun group of contemporary romances set around the Nashville music scene. This book was Marisa and Luc's story. Marisa is sister and stylist to country superstar Trey (hero from book #1) and Luc is his manager.
Luc grew up in an unhappy home. His parents didn't have a good marriage, because his father was too focused on making his career a success at the sacrifice of everything else. Luc is self-aware enough to realize that he's a lot like his father that way. As a result, he never plans to marry or have children because he has no intention of hurting anyone the way his father hurt him and his mother. Unfortunately, you can plan all you want in life, but you can't control your emotions especially when it comes to love.
Marisa dated Luc for two years and has loved him her entire adult life. But she finally realized that he was never going to be able to give her what she needs....marriage and a family and has been struggling to give up on her love for Luc. She knows that her love for Luc overrides everything else when she's around him, including her common sense so she's tried to cut her ties to him, but that's not easy to do when they have the same circle of work associates and friends.
There's a lot of back and forth in this book with the emotional upheaval. Marisa has been patient long enough and she's flat-out given up on Luc. Luc loves her and cannot stand the thought of being without her, but knows that he will just hurt her in the end. Honestly, he's really sacrificing himself to keep her from getting hurt, but they are both too far gone. Staying apart at this point is just hurting both of them, but Luc is terrified to give into their love.
There was a series of momentous events in this book that changes Luc's perspective. I'm not going to give any spoilers except to say that I loved the way that the author wrote this story line. It works and it works well. This was another truly enjoyable installment to this series. I continue to like all of these characters.
The next book is Ty (an up and coming country star) and Avery. They are both introduced in this book with a few brief hints at a past they've shared. I already love Ty's character, but am not so sure about Avery yet. Regardless, I am anxious to see where Cheryl takes the series next!
The love lives of this close-knit group of friends and family continues to be tumultuous in this third installment of Cheryl Douglas' Nashville Nights series. This time around former lovers Marisa and Luc can't keep saying no to each other but unfortunately saying yes is equally as hard. For these two star-crossed lovers the road to happiness is full of danger and explosive secrets.
Marisa has a career she loves and at one point she had the man she's loved since she was a teenager, but her desire to have a family doesn't coincide with what Luc wants so she's been trying to move on. Rather unsuccessfully, considering that she doesn't love the man she just became engaged to. Which is a good thing, since just like in the previous book a seemingly decent guy becomes obsessed and crazed by love. To see this plot device used again was extremely irritating and disappointing considering how well the author portrayed the couple in the first book in this series. It gave me a bad impression of Marisa by agreeing to marry someone she didn't love and expecting there to be a happy ending. She was supposed to be smarter than that.
Luc too was full of stupid. He's sexy but very dumb when it comes to relationships and his own self-worth. The issues holding him back from marrying didn't really ring true for me, but as the secrets came out I was intrigued and knowing that the outcome will play a part in a future book adds to its importance. He and Marisa certainly didn't lack in their sexual compatibility with many sexual interludes being extremely combustible. Even when they're not together the sexual tension is apparent which is why it was so frustrating that mere stupidity was keeping them apart.
It was great to see all the characters from the two previous books and it made for a stronger story seeing how close everyone is, and their inclusions were inserted seamlessly throughout the story. While not as satisfying as the first book in this series it's a slight improvement over the previous book and still an enjoyable read with bright promise for future books.
I hit the point where I am not gonna finish this book... When i began, It seemed VERY familiar to me. and I kept checking to see if i may have had it on Nook or some other digital reader.
Finally when Marisa broke her engagement, I figured it out.. I've read "Shameless" ?? (sierra and Trey's story)... and this book seems to be the same daggone plot..
girl loves boy, girl leaves boy... girl finds new boy, girl gets engaged.. New boy is not getting sex and is insecure, threatens old boy.. Old boy is too magnetic to just walk away from, so Girl Leaves new boy.. New boy gets violent tries to take the sex he's been denied. Girl is shocked that man she's been leading on has dark hidden emotions and violent tendencies...
oh, yeah.. and one of them has some old hidden secret they did not tell the other.
Sierra and her possessive old sugar daddy... or Marisa and her obsessed cowboy. Sierra's secret baby issues.. or Luc's secret daughter.
At this point in the book, It's the same story I read before with some nouns changed... so I'm gonna stop now.
I also seem to remember that Marisa had more of a personality in Shameless.. she kept Luc jumping.. now she's all weepy and whiny and "oh I wanna have a family"... meh!
If it helps.. I Loved Shameless. but not enough to "read it twice" so-to-speak.
Strangely enough, I never intended to read this book. When I started the series, I wasn't Luc's biggest fan. He wasn't particularly likeable and I had all the intentions to skip his story. For some reason I decided to give him a chance and, oh boy, I'm glad I did because so far this is my favourite book in the series, and I can't say enough about how much I enjoyed Luc's character. I liked the fact that he wasn't all perfect but had the strongest love for the heroine, and that's what made me root for him from the start.
On the negative side,
Despite these minor complaints and the "dog in the manger" theme, this was a beautiful love story and an absolute delight to read. Recommended!
While this is a review of Ruthless, you have to take all the first two books also. These three stories are about a circle of friends and family who can’t seem to get it together when it comes to love. Not that they don’t love each other (as friends and as lovers) but they just can’t seem to get on the same page. Past history, past mistakes, family backgrounds, and other issues conspire to keep these couples from their happily-ever-after.
Cheryl Douglas has taken a slice out of life in these books. There was something and someone in each one that I could relate to and a few things that made me want to give a big ole “B” slap to the side of someone’s head… so shake them until their teeth rattled. And then there is the passion…. Spicy, caliente’, and body tingling. No these are not your mother’s romance novels, but then again if the New York Times best seller list can have spice on their list… so can you.
I give these books 4 out of 5 clouds and a steamy 9 on the pepper scale.
Boy I have been looking forward to this book since I read the first book in the series. I wanted to know the back story and see how the hell these two were going to work it out. It was definitely worth the wait. I didn’t know if they would ever get their shit together at the same time or if it was never going to be the right time. I love how they did though. The fact that it was Nikki, was beautiful.
Marisa and Luc are in constant battle. Their chemistry is off the charts, and they are both as stubborn as they come. Once they realize they either put it all on the line or give it up, they finally get their shit together.
I read some of the reviews on this book on Amazon. I always read the bad reviews. I would have to say that I don’t agree with any of them, at all. This book was amazing, a very welcome and worthy addition to the Nashville Nights series. I will definitely be checking out Avery and Ty’s book next.
I have to say that even though this is the 3rd book in the series, this is one I was looking less forward to reading. Now I'm not saying I didn't like it. Because I really started enjoying it in the middle of the story.
But I have to say Marisa and Luc were two of the characters I liked the lease in this series. I really liked Marisa's character in Shameless. She was a strong character in Shameless. But in this one her character seemed to fall apart. She was whiny and clingy. And although proclaiming that Luc was the only man for her. When Luc finally pulled it together and wanted her she was like "Nope don't want you anymore." I mean I get where she was coming from, but her character just didn't seem as strong in this book.
Now on the other hand Luc was a character I didn't like from Shameless. He's arrogant and only cares about himself. But as this story progressed you really got to see why Luc is the way he is and I couldn't help but liking him.

This was the first book where the Heroine became less and less likeable for me. She's selfcentered, selfish, immature, whiny, mean, irational, and so much more she made me thoroughly disgusted. Normally, what Luc did would bother me more, but she was overall so overthetop that it outshined eveything. The plot was recycled from the same series with different names, the love was some twisted obsession and the "hot" parts I had to skip because every touch or kiss was a sort of manipulation. Nothing was for the sake of being. Either one of them wanted something and hoped to get it by kissing, touching, holding hands even. It bothered me cause even the daughter, Nikki, became interested in a relationship with her dad for the sake of gaining an entry into the music world. Too jmuck manipulation.
What a really good book. That storyline really keeps your interest peeked. Luc & Marisa have a long history albeit one sided for many of those years. Mostly because Luc was the best buddy of her much older brother. So, since she was a tweeny she was in love with him & he did not even really notice her until she was much older & did not even date her until she came back from college. Luc just never wanted to be a husband or father so Marisa was cutting him loose because she wanted a husband & children. All the characters were well developed & all blended well together. The difficult moments that the author brings out at different times were very moving.
Marisa and Luc's story was honest and realistic. Interesting twist at the end and I would have preferred more time was spent on the history between Luc and his parents rather than just in the last few chapters. This relationship had so much bearing on his interactions with Marisa that I felt it deserved more in-depth probing than just the glancing view we got. Still enjoyed the book and am on to #4 in the series!
Wished that Marisa moved on from Luc. He wasn't worth the time or energy for me. He was a straight up PRICK. Why is it with so many books that when the hero and heroine break up it's the hero that sleeps around while the heroine doesn't? So during the break up which was a year and she was engaged to someone else, she still couldn't sleep with anyone else because she was still hooked up on him and yet he had no problems sleeping around? Argh that irks me! And is unrealistic.
A good, quick read. Ruthless was a sweet romance that made me care about the main characters and some of the secondary characters (who are featured in other books). Technically it's #3 in a series, but because each book is about a different couple it was easy to jump in with this one and not be lost. I'll probably read some of the others in the series, too.
I enjoyed the chasing, the jealousy Luc shows towards Marisa and I enjoyed the hurt. But I think this book is ridiculous. Why? Because Marisa and Luc are actually hurting each other yet they both won't let go. I was expecting something more 'mature' but eventually, I have it.
I read this book first before I read Trey and Josh's stories. My bad. :)
This book was just so cliché that I was consistently rolling my eyes as I read. The two MC's were both immature and selfish. Every decision made by both of them was stupid to the point of being unbelievable. I can get into a steamy romance novel but not when you get this melodramatic "I hate you, I love you" scenario THE ENTIRE BOOK! This one definitely wasn't my cup of tea.
Really loved this book!!! Great story that sucked me in right away! Since this is a book in a series, I was confused by a few relationships and back stories, but will definitely be reading the rest of them now!
I am LOVING this series! Luc has grown as a man so much since book 1. He overcame some big fears and opened his heart. The turn of events in this book brought me to tears. I love Marissa and can't imagine having heartbreak after heartbreak from the same guy 15 years. Onto book #4
I loved this story. Cheryl has a way with writing, that made me fall in love with a character, that I really didnt care for in the first two books. Love Marissa, Luc, not so much. By the end of this book and understanding his past, I fell in love with him. One happy HEA.
Cheryl Douglas is an author I have just discoveredand I am so glad I did. Really enjoying the Nashville series. The characters are great and I love that all the characters continue to gow with each book.
I also enjoyed the story of Marisa and Luc. I think Luc's story of his was kind of sad and maybe a bit too dramatic. Luc's relationship with his daughter wasn't realistic to me in they way they started to immediately forge a relationship.
I am loving this series. Don't care a ton for the back and forth "i want a relationship" and "I don't want a relationship" between the two main characters. But I'm falling in love with all the people, so I'm overlooking it :)
Marissa wasn't the brightest bulb in the box but neither was Luc, they both made some devastating mistakes that in the long run caused them pain but also made them stronger. It was a good read.
i think out of all books in this series this was the hardest one. There was times when i would just say poor guy he needs to leave her alone then i would cry and feel her pain.
