The Siren #3

Saving Jay

Rate this book
Saving Jay :
A fast moving business thriller and human drama set in London against the background of the fiercely competitive world of management consultancy. Think Accenture, Deloitte, PwC, KPMG, McKinsey. Jay Brooke is the lean and hungry maverick heading for the top, who gets results his own way. To his admirers he is the future of management consultancy, to the old guard he is a loose cannon who needs to be reigned in. And his new boss, American ball-breaker Sara, believes she is the one to do it. To shaker and mover Jay, she is a second rate woman masquerading as a first rate man, and conflict seems inevitable. But who will win out? Will it be the man who gets results but breaks all the rules, or the woman who wants what Jay has, but doesn't have what it takes to earn it? There is plenty of intrigue, as well as romance, not least from the two very different women who dream of a future with Jay; his loyal secretarial assistant Emma, and his ambitious colleague, the feisty Louise who will stop at nothing to get her man.

This is a story that packs a punch at the belly of power and privilege. It will resonate with the millions who have worked in big Corporations and professional services firms, and frighten the millions who every year apply to work in them. It will delight and entertain the 99% who despise corporate greed and the fat cats who profit from it. Saving Jay paints an unflattering picture of ruthless ambition, back-stabbing, and an amoral Corporate world.

"Saving Jay," is the second book in the Siren Series trilogy, and follows "When the Siren Calls." When the Siren Calls - Prequel

It's timeline extends beyond that of "When the Siren Calls, and here we first meet the young, straight-shooting Jay, as he was before injustice, hypocrisy and double standards changed him to the wheeler dealer we see in "When the Siren Calls." The plot of Saving Jay centres around Jay's descent into a street-wise womaniser, hustling to get back in the back time, and the woman that offers him redemption. This book is the "Prequel" version, and takes us upto the inciting incident that sets the full story of Saving Jay in motion.

When the pen is your sword

Five things about me…

- one of eight kids, lifestory is the classic immigrant tale of seeking to live up to parental expectations, while working to mark out your own trail.
- I have aspects of an obsessive personality, establishing a work-life balance was a major challenge.
- I gave up on my business career in my mid-forties, I just didn’t tell my boss! Find something you enjoy doing, and you’ll never work another day.
- I tell my kids education is the best gift I can give them, it’s no weight to carry and no-one can take it off you.
- I believe almost everyone has an agenda; explore perspectives outside the mainstream, and beware suppliers bearing gifts.

When the Siren Calls

Tom’s first novel, “When the Siren Calls”, is published in two parts. The first, a “Prequel” is a stand alone short story which introduces the headstrong heroine, the rich and beautiful but neglected Isobel, and the moment her slumbering sexuality is awakened by the mysterious Jay. The second book, follows Isobel’s search for emotional fulfillment as she pursues Jay to Tuscany on the pretext of buying a holiday home, and abandons all her sexual inhibitions in the cinematic love affair of her dreams. But all is not as it seems, and Isobel finds herself trapped in a nightmare of deception and betrayal.

A published writer at University, Tom Barry spent 20 years in management consultancy with Accenture, Deloitte, and PwC, advising the Boards of leading global brands such as Apple, Disney, Toyota and Vodafone. His career prompted a specific interest in the art of persuasive communication. He is passionate about nurturing young talent and has supported a number of UK and overseas schools, including the Nordoff Robbins Centre for Music Therapy. He lives near London and is currently working with the Brit Writers’ Awards, a charitable initiative to promote creative writing in our schools. His debut novel, When the Siren Calls, is set in Tuscany and is both a sensual emotional drama and a page turning thriller.

I read Saving Jay prior to reading When the Siren Calls. I was glad that I did. I am not a big fan of the prequel. I feel as though you should know all the backstory during the read and not create it afterwards. I liked Jay after reading this story. He is not a perfect man, but he wasn't the royal jerk that he is betrayed as in Siren. I was glad that I got to see what helped to shape him into the current character (a womanizing con man) that he was in the Siren book. I did wish for redemption for Jay and maybe the author will accomplish it in the book to follow.

Although I am happy to find out a little additional info about Jay's past, this prequel was too short. It starts off well, but after reading "When the Siren Calls" first, you want more. I think if I read the prequel before the full-length novel, I would feel differently. Make sure to read the series in order and you won't be disappointed. The setup is put together well, the readers just need more!

Jay Jay Jay. Rather sure of yourself aren't you? This story really reminds me of my career in small Business Computers, many years ago. Not a lot of women in that business at that time, so I pushed the envelope. Jay is a great character. The Author has chosen a storyline that I believe anyone will enjoy and many will relate to. Jays' corporate Structure is in London so that's another plus.

I loved "When the Siren Calls", so I couldn't wait to get my hands on this 'prequel'. I wanted to know more about Jay's past and how he came to be the man he was in Sirens, and this was certainly covered. However, it was too short! I want more more more. Looking forward to where Tom Barry takes this character as he is a winner.

I was given this book in exchange for an honest review.

Well it was really a short introduction to Jay. A businessman who has it all - or so he thinks. I was left wanting more. Can't wait to read more about Jay.
