Following her departure from Faerie, Alice tries to adjust to the rhythm of her old life. But confusing emotions draw her into a new venture with Dorothy, a girl from a neighboring farm. When the pair are transported to a whole new part of Faerie, Alice encounters former acquaintances who, like her, haven't moved past what transpired in the Unseelie kingdom. 3.5 Dead Crow Stars ⭐️
Spicy Level: 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️/5

This is the third book in the Wicked Darling series and has to be read in the publication order to get the story's full impact.

Note: There might be spoilers from Book 1/2, so if this bothers you please skip the review... Just know I recommend the book and SERIES!!!!

This is a multiple-POV story where we find Alice desperately trying to return to Faerie. She misses her rabbit (Riordan). She misses her cat (Caer). All she wants to do is get back to the two of them because her life in the human realm is utterly crap. She finds out that her sibling's babysister, Dorothy, happens to have magic...So she gives her the book. The book, and both of them are instantly whirled in a tornado-like fashion back to Faerie where they land in Oz on top of the Wicked Witch of the East. So if you haven't guessed by now, this is a Wizard of Oz retelling.

Even though we have characters from our dear old "Alice in Wonderland", we take a little merry little trip down the yellow brick road. I might be biased as I ABSOLUTELY adore Alice in Wonderland and the Wizard of Oz but the inner child in me just squealed at how Rebecca Kenney took inspiration from the two stories and made an almost perfect amalgamation of the two. It is always a treat that when you return to the world you think you know but learn so much more. The worldbuilding of Oz was perfect, playing the perfect homage to the original story but adding in that wicked twist she does so well!

This is by far the spiciest of her books that I have read, but that was almost something that kind of took me out of the story. I love Rebecca Kenney and would probably find enjoyment out of reading her grocery list...but I found myself almost skimming the smut. (And I'm a girl who likes a good smutty scene). Some of the smut in this felt like they were added to add smut "next to the plot", not to "work in collaboration with" the plot. I picked up this book because I wanted the plot, I wanted the story and this was almost pushed to the background so we could get steamy next to a tree.

I also found I wanted to rush through the scenes with Alice to get back to Dorothy and her interaction with West. Their interactions were violent, filled with explosive tension and wickedly sexy! Basically, just everything wrapped in a bow of FANTASTICNESS!!!! And we had so few of them. West is officially on my list of Book Boyfriends and the fact that he's basically Damon Salvatore but green makes me gooey....

I really appreciated the fantastic, great and distinct job done of clear characterizations right from the start. I really appreciate that you can hear the character's personalities as the writing style changes when you're in the different POV's.

Alice is naive. She's not necessarily innocent anymore, but she's got this childlike wonder in her dialogue with how she speaks to things. You get the sense that she is fascinated by everything and everyone. Dorothy is basically a psychopath. Her descriptions are slightly more complicated. You can see she's more educated as she's intelligent enough to know that she doesn't possess emotional intelligence or emotional reactions the same way that humans would. But when she needs to display emotions she can turn it on. The juxtaposition of how Alice flows versus how Dorothy structures her actions was delightful to read.

I also loved the addition of Jasper, I LOVE HIM... with his puppy-loveable manner and his past, he is the perfect definition of a cinnamon roll. You just want to squish his cheeks and give him a hug, he is just adorable... and the VIBRATION!!!! (iykyk)

Overall while this is not the best book in the series for me, I still highly recommend this series and book!

Read this especially if these tropes appeal to you:
▶ Reverse Harem/Why Choose
▶ Enemies to Lovers
▶ Hate Sex
▶ Touch Her You Die
▶ Crossed Swords/MMMF
▶ Found Family
▶ Grumpy/Sunshine with Hibmo and Cinnamon Roll
▶ Retelling with gender-bent Wicked Witch of the West

LOL, this review is mostly going to be dirty quotes.
TWs (as listed in the book):

Summary:
Alice is back in Faerie, and this time she and her neighbor Dorothy (and Dorothy's little dog) have landed on the Isle of Oz. Seeking her beloved White Rabbit, Riordan, and Cheshire Cat, Caer, Alice discovers that both of her friends are also in Oz and have been cursed by the Green Wizard. This mysterious and powerful wizard is said to grant all supplicants one wish--but twists their words so each wish becomes a curse. Caer's wish for courage turned him into a hostile, leonine beast; Riordan's wish to be able to safely approach the Cat trapped him in a suit of armor.

Reuniting with her friends, Alice, Dorothy, Riordan, Caer, and a scarecrow named Jasper are 'off to see the wizard' to wish his curses undone. It comes to light that Dorothy is half-fae with sorceress abilities. She inadvertently transported Alice and herself to Oz, landing atop the East Witch and smushing her to death. You already know the next bit, Dorothy gains possession of the witch's magic shoes and the West Witch vows to avenge his sister's death. However, the shoes prevent their wearer's murder for the first seven days. Unable to kill Dorothy immediately, West bides his time tormenting Dorothy and her friends.

Will Alice free her friends from their curses? Will Dorothy defeat the West Witch or die at his hands? Will this adventure just be one big fuckfest? (Yes). And what's the Green Wizard's deal anyway?

Thoughts:
-Gorgeous cover. All of the books in this series have stunning covers.
-The story was doing backflips to set up the smut. This is a smut-oriented book. But I admire the way Kenney really leaned into the Faerie world possibilities. This is what it means to use the fantasy genre to its fullest potential 😆
-I don't know the full Oz lore, but there's at least one Wicked Easter Egg. (And, I guarantee, you will have the Wicked soundtrack stuck in your head the entire time you're reading this book).
-Dorothy and West make my heart want to burst ❤️‍🔥
-Holy shit was this spicy. Sometimes I think I'm too jaded when it comes to 🌶️ but this was 😮‍💨🪭

Overall, A Court of Sugar and Spice has been my favorite in the series. But this one was a lot of fun.

Favorite Quotes:
"Understand that I can and will do anything I want to you—any form of torture I desire, short of killing you," he murmurs. "I will peel transparent slices of skin from this lovely body and snap these clever little fingers, bone by bone. I will fuck you hard and leave you bruised, bare, and sated for your friends to find. I will incinerate them without warning, if it suits me. They exist for my pleasure, and so do you."
🐍
"You don’t have to be useful, or brilliant, or attractive, or pleasant, to be worth something. [...] You have value for no other reason than being yourself. That’s enough. You don’t have to justify your existence to anyone."
🐍
"Intimate?" I frown at him, then look at Riordan, who turns away. "Wait… did the Scarecrow fuck Alice while I was looking for the road?" Riordan’s silence is answer enough. "And he did it in front of you? Shit. Things really are different in Faerie."
🐍
"Fucking you does not mean I’ll spare you—far from it. I will kill you in the most horrific manner I can devise." Eyes narrowed, I let some of my magic leak into the ground, causing a rumble beneath his feet. "Not if I kill you first."
🐍
🫢
🐍
"I will never forget how it felt, when my heart’s-blood gushed into your body. When I kissed your mouthful of fangs and felt your claws slicing my flesh. When I drove myself inside you, invaded you with all the strength of my will. It hurt me to do that. But it was also the greatest ecstasy I have ever felt—so great I thought my heart would crack from the force of it."
🐍
"The terror of losing someone doesn’t kill your love for them," I reply. "The love remains, no matter how you deny it. The fear only holds you back, keeps you from enjoying a life with them while you can. It steals the future and the present from you and the one you crave. Fear is a stupid reason not to love."
🐍
I suppose I can see the appeal of his sunshiny, all-too-happy-to-please personality. But my affinities lie with cruel smiles and clever tongues.
🐍
🫢
🐍
I am the king of Oz, a land as dark and wicked as I am. If you decided to leave me, I would try to respect your wishes, though I’m not sure I could. I can’t swear that I wouldn’t follow you, lock a collar around your lovely throat, and drag you back here. I would try to give you your freedom, but I know myself. I know my need for you would overcome me at last, and I would claim you by force

There are wayyy more great quotes but you'll have to read the book for those.

Many thanks to Rebecca F Kenny for this digital ARC. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

———my thoughts———

Alice is just beginning to settle back into dreary farm life when a new adventure appears.
Together with her newfound ally, Dorothy, Alice must again venture into the land of the Fae...and back into the arms of her loves.
But with a new powerful enemy fixating on Dorothy, who knows how this tale will end?

All of Rebecca Kenny’s books are delightful.
And this one was no exception.
A retelling of The Wizard Of Oz, it manages to both stay close enough to the original story...while putting a unique spin on the plot.
Told by two protagonists, Alice (whose story began in A Court Of Hearts And Hunger), and Dorothy, the plot follows both of the women each have their own journeys, romantic interests, and stories.
So I’m going to split this review a little.
First, we have Alice.
Alice’s character development is possibly one of the most fascinating arcs I’ve ever read.
How she goes from being the quiet, sweet farm girl, to a woman who is no less sweet...but who has a dangerous side, and knows exactly what she wants.
Who she wants.
And probably one of my favourite parts of this retelling, is the Tin Man, the Lion, and the Scarecrow.
The way they all fit the characterisation!
Their part of the story was wonderfully told, and if I had one complaint?
It would be that sometimes there was a little too much focus on their story, instead of Dorothy’s.
And Dorothy?
I think she, and her story may be my favourite yet.
While I do like sweeter FMCs, I adore ruthless ones.
So really, it’s no surprise that unforgiving, smart Dorothy is my favourite.
But who I love even more is West.
The way he talks, the way he’s so delightfully evil...he’s perfect.
I think I might love him more than Fin.
And what’s even better than the two of them separately, is there their relationship.
From when they first met to the end of the book, there’s always this tension between them.
And quite simply, I love it.
But again, I wish Dorothy has a little more page time.
Apart from that, RK handles the two storylines perfectly, and all I have to say is I’m eagerly anticipating her next book!

————quotes————

“People think I’m nice. And I am—mostly. To people worthy of niceness. Like children, for example.”

“Fiero,” I whisper. “I don’t think we’re in the human realm anymore.”

“I don’t give my true name easily,” he says. “For now, you can call me West.” “And I’m Dorothy,” I reply. “In case you want to beg me for mercy.”

“I hate him, I hate him, I want him…”

“Kitten.” His voice is muffled, but I’d know it anywhere. “Why have you come to this wretched place? Still no sense of self-preservation, I see.”

“It fits, all of it. I think I’ve been wanting to go home my whole life. And now that I’m here in Faerie, unfamiliar as it is, I never want to leave. There’s no place like it.”

“I whirl to face him, and my breath catches because every time he’s away I forget how fucking tall and gorgeous he is. He’s smirking, lashes lowered over dark eyes that glitter with mockery.”

“I knock his hand away. “I don’t want time with you.” He cocks his head. “Your heartbeat says otherwise.” “Anger tends to make a heartbeat quicken.” “True. So does lust.”

“Break if you must, my darling,” Caer whispers. “We’ll put you back together, every time.”

“May I eat you, sweet mouse? May I devour you until you’re too hoarse to vent another scream of pleasure?”

“We are similar, you and I. We both carry that vision of an endless Nothing, one that grows until it swallows us whole, cuts us off from everything and everyone else. We both dread being locked away from adventure, from experiences—abandoned with nothing to entertain our minds. Doomed to endless boredom and uselessness…and loneliness.”

“The moment when you looked at me with all the violence of love in your beautiful eyes and my heart nearly broke in fucking two?” he says. “That moment?”

“You’re lonely, vindictive, cruel, delicious, intelligent. You’re the most fascinating person I’ve ever met, and the one who is most like me. I don’t want you dead, and I wish you could let me live. We could do this forever, the two of us—we’d never have to fear being alone again. We’d be so wicked and wild—we could do anything we pleased, and no one could tell us not to. I wish… I wish… I wish… I could love you until I die. I want you to be mine.”

“I’m smiling at him. Shit, I didn’t realize it. And he’s smiling back, a wicked grin that’s both surprised and avaricious. “Shut up,” I snap at him, and he grins wider as I tap my heels together and disappear.”

Zdecydowanie mogę zaliczyć tę książkę do najbardziej odważnych i specyficznych książek jakie miałam okazję czytać.

I didn't quite accepted the ending of A Court of Hearts and Hunger because I wanted a different finale for Alice, Riordan and Caer. I didn't dream of a finale like A City of Emeralds and Envy but I am glad it hapenned.

This book is the spiciest of the Wicked Darling series but the plot is still good.
I enjoyed every page of it and the personality of each character.

Spoiler review in a form of my edited update notes

30.0% "I'm sorry, but this is just a fuck-fest and not in a good way. Barely any plot and most of it is an excuse for sex. No build up or reasoning - West suddenly shows up and he just wants to fuck Dorothy and then he shows up some more - you guessed it - to fuck Dorothy, no matter what happens around them. And I mean it literally, he shows up, stops the plot and fucks her, and then the "plot" resumes?"

30.0% "And don't get me started on Alice's side of the story. Another excuse for sex. First of all, I loved her story in book 2, it was deliciously wicked and exciting and her interactions - delightful. Here? - I don't feel it"

30.0% "I thought she clearly had better chemistry with the Rabbit, but alas, the author chose to make a triad, even though I think the Cat deserves someone who would yearn for him the same way Alice years for R. Then I was, ok, so she will be together with both of them, and they will fuck her together or along, but not each other - cause like, they're like brothers. And I was good with Alice having this little harem of her own"

30.0% "But, then?!? She just kind of finds another guy??? And like she had this big bond with the two faes and now we're throwing Jasper into the mix??? Who's only reason for existing is being cute and fucking Alice. And like Caer is apparently going to fall in love with him, and R wants to screw him and maybe the Cat and the Rabbit are actually into each other (really not ok with this after them feeling like brothers thing) -"

30.0% "And idek anymore. Like we had this story with two fae falling in love with the same girl and it being powerful and all and now it's just some group sex with everyone being into everyone. Idk, maybe I'm too into the notion that there are specific partners and bonds that are more precious, and true love and all, so the notion that suddenly C and R want to share A with everyone and also liking other people is idk - sad"

30.0% "I actually really enjoyed the first book, and even though I didn't fall in love with it, it was still a great ride (🤣), and I think I really loved Alice's story in book 2, or at the very least was really into it, but this? - I can't even count it as a proper book, as there is not much original plot and there are mostly sex fantasies involving familiar characters"

30.0% "I'll skim through the rest of it, as I've been doing since 18%, but in all honesty I probably should just drop this."

30.0% "Also, while I truly believed that R could kill A, West saying that he'll kill D is just weak, it's all telling not showing, and it's trying to make me think they have some tension, when, in fact, they don't"

35.0% "Honestly Caer should be with Jasper and Alice with Riordan - the two pairs fit well together.
I sincerely think if Riordan could manage to be vulnerable and make a nest for A from time to time, there would be no need for C's softness.

R challenges A mentally and C could really use the unyielding love of J against his moods - this fits so well, I don't see how the author didn't see that"

60.0% "I can't help, but be reminded of when Aaron Warner said that thing about puppies. Basically thinking someone's nice is not a romantic and full love - simply get a puppy 🙄 this became a shit show. None of the charming qualities of the previous books"

70.0% "I realized that just as Clara seemed more one-dimensional in book 2, also Alice became a poor copy of herself here"

Autorka puściła wodze fantazji i wszelkie ograniczenia.

Wątek romantyczny Dorotki i Zacha wyszedł świetnie.

A fun, spicy, and heartfelt conclusion to The Wicked Darlings series. 🩷

This series was all I can ask for in a Romantasy- fun and interesting characters, an imaginatively built Faerie world, and lots of adventure, spice, and romance.

Rebecca was one of the first authors I met on booktok; and I am so grateful to have been an ARC reader for all three books in this series.

I highly recommend this series for lovers of:
🖤Level 4/5🌶 spice
🖤Unpretentious and bingable writing
🖤Romantically adventurous cast
🖤Nicely paced plot
🖤Great vibes for the Faerie fantasy atmosphere

Tysm Rebecca for the ARC! 💜

I received an ARC version of this book and am leaving a review voluntarily.

So, this is the third book in the series and you absolutely must read the prior books to follow along and understand all the impacts. Luckily, the previous two books are also amazing.

This is an OZ retelling and make no mistake…this is for adults only. The spice is HEAVY. Details galore! The author spares nothing so make sure you’re okay with detailed sex scenes because there are a lot!

There are a multitude of relationships here, including a consensual poly relationship—I don’t see that very often so it was a pleasant change. I found it written well, and I absolutely believed they all loved each other equally.

The Wicked Witch is a gender swap and it makes him a fascinating antagonist. He’s a dark, mysterious character and make no mistake, he has limited morals. Though, he does have some limits which makes him intriguing. Over the course of the story, we get more information on his backstory, really playing with the reader’s ideas about who is the real bad guy.

Dorothy here is such a fun character. She’s feisty, impulsive, and ready to explore this new world with vigor. Some of her choices are pretty surprising but create such lovely drama.

Absolutely a wonderful edition to this series but just be aware of the extent of the sensual scenes when you go in.

I have really enjoyed this series. Kenney is quickly becoming a favorite because of her ability to create lovable (and despicable) characters and awesome chemistry. Some of the characters from the first in this series return, Alice, Riordan and Caer, but we are also introduced to Dorothy and the Wicked Witch of the West. And seriously, thankfully I love the new characters just as much.

This is a retelling of the Wizard of Oz but with a fresh perspective. And a sinfully naughty one at that. Kenney delivers on her TWs for sure, but I loved it! Dorothy and the Witch are devilishly wicked and I love where she takes Alice and her boys. We don't get an answer to what happened with Lir and Louisa from the end of book 2 but I don't even care. Break me off a piece of this anytime!

ARC review

Loved it! I'm a bit obsessed with Alice in Wonderland, I was pleased to see the continuation of Alice and her partners. The twist on the relationship between the Witch of the West and Dorothy was well done. Overall I really enjoyed this one, it was wicked in all the best ways!

I read all three books in this trilogy, and overall, I found it a jovial, entertaining read that can be consumed relatively quickly.

Initially drawn in by Finias, our razor tongued Sugarplum fairy, I stayed for Riordan, the tortured scientist driven by desperation. These books do not take themselves all that seriously, as they are ultimately retellings - I quite enjoyed the subversion of well beloved characters in this fun little trilogy. The author incorporated a lot of imagery and ideology from the original tales, but managed to make them ‘naughty’ in a way that didn’t make me cringe so hard, I almost turned inside out. Well known tropes are deliberately turned on their head, and I was able to just sit back and enjoy these books for what they are i.e reimaginings.

Character development isn’t hugely important in these books; honestly, a lot of the characters are included as ‘necessities’ in order to stay true to the source material. Jasper, for example, was necessary to the plot as he is the Scarecrow, but his appearance didn’t really add much except filling out the quartet; an unassuming, placid character who was only required as a plot device, truth be told.

Quite honestly, the only character who undergoes any significant metamorphosis (in the emotional sense, not just the physical sense) is Riordan a.k.a The White Rabbit. We see him transform from a cold, calculating empirical scientist who dissects humans for a living into a fierce, stoic defender of those he holds close to his mangled heart.

A damaged soul in every sense of the word, Riordan was the most interesting and engaging character for me; all the other characters paled in comparison. West is also fun - if his plot line hadn’t centred around getting into Dorothy’s knickers at every available opportunity, he could have potentially been as interesting as Riordan, but alas, there were too many characters in the last book, which hindered the author’s ability to flesh him out to his full, green potential.

I was not a particular fan of Lir, the boring prince, and Louisa, his brash queen, and whilst I did like Finias and Clara, they were not my favourite pairing. The female characters in this series were not all that likeable; I loathed Louisa and her abrasive, entitled attitude. Thankfully, she is only featured in the first book. The other females were all afflicted with the same condition i.e too much of their blood was rushing south, so they were sex mad and insatiable. Gun to my head, I would pick Alice as my favourite, as she at least has some semblance of a brain!

These books are heavy on gratuitous smut, and they all fall in love in approximately 2.5 seconds; again, if you can suspend your disbelief and take this series as a fun little nonsense read, it is enjoyable. The author does a great job of setting the scenes, and the use of vocabulary is varied and expressive. The plots also progress swiftly, all tying into a neat conclusion upon the finale of the series; although there are some plot holes that are glossed over, ultimately, the narrative is linear and makes sense as a whole.

Special shoutout to Fiero; always love a dog, fictional or not!

I would recommend this series if you are having a slow weekend and need something fun to fill the time; along with a cup of tea, there are worse ways to spend a day or two!

You might think Ms. Maas is the fae smut queen but let me introduce you to Ms. Rebecca Kenney.
If you loved the Wizard of Oz as a kid and grew up to be a smutty smut lover then what the heck are you waiting for?! Pages upon pages upon pages of the hottest, most descriptive (and not in a cringe way like hot hot) smut (and foursome yummyyyy). The world building is incredible. You'll be transported to the worlds of Faerie and you won't ever want to leave. This book will have you panting, gasping, screaming and turning every page voraciously for another taste. Phenomenal. 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️, ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ and infinite 🥵.

Holy Moly. I've got a new book boyfriend and West may be my favorite one. This book was so good. My favorite of the 3 in the series so far. I love a good reverse harem. This retelling of Wizard of Oz is along my favorites so far. I can't wait for more in the series. This one felt spicier. 10 out of 10 will recommend to anyone who will listen.

Autorka przedstawiła własny świat i opisała go w taki sposób, aby wciągnąć w niego czytelnika.

Notes:

In this one, we are revisiting Alice’s unfinished love story with Caer and Riordan (the Cheshire Cat and the White Rabbit). We also have Dororthy's point of view, who will be our second main female character. Cause we got to have two love stories in one, where we really only focus on one and dabble with the other.

Dorothy is a sorceress with heterochromia iridium.

Alice is less of a naive twit.

We find out in this book that the Queen of Hearts was once the Witch of the North and Lover to the Wizard of Oz and that he cursed her. The whole Isle of Crows is giving me children of the corn vibes though. Or fae cultist vibes.

I don't know how I feel about the author combining the Tin Man with the White Rabbit.

I also think Dorothy is either a sociopath or just… autistic maybe. She made a comment about only really being able to mimic what a normal person feels and that triggered me.

The love interests: Alice gets a Scarecrow, Lion, and Tin Man.

Dorothy gets a green witch.

Jasper … the himbo. Gotta love him. He's also a walking vibrator.

Dorothy gets a snake up her cooter. As if that's not traumatizing to visualize.

The one thing that bothered me when I got to the end of this book is that we never found out what happened to Lir and Louisa in the last book. Like, at all. It's a mystery unless there's going to be a fourth book and it'll be picked up again there.

I will say that the books are interesting, especially once I got through the relative silliness of the first one.

4.5 stars

Possible mild spoilers for the series!

Rebecca F. Kenney has done it again! The only reason this wasn’t a full five stars for me, is due to the first book in the series ( A Court Of Sugar & Spice) being the best of the three books, in my opinion.

First, I want to discuss the series as a whole, which is an overall five stars for me. The premise of Faerie and its corresponding kingdoms of Fae existing in a sort of retelling and parallel to the stories of The Nutcracker, Alice in Wonderland, and The Wizard of Oz, is absolutely brilliant. The overarching plot lines and interconnected nature of the stories was very well done. As someone who danced in The Nutcracker for many years, researched Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, its author and adaptations thoroughly in college, and grew up watching The Wizard of Oz, I am thoroughly impressed by the series. Then you add in a LOT of spice and darkness, and you have the perfect dark fantasy romance serial that follows three different main couples and a poly quartet.

As for A City of Emeralds and Envy on its own, as earlier stated, I give the book 4.5 stars.

I truly enjoyed watching Riordan’s character arc/redemption. To be completely honest, I hated Riordan in A Court of Hearts and Hunger, and I wanted Caer and Alice to skip off into the sunset together, WITHOUT HIM. I wanted him to have some tragic fate that would dispel him from the series entirely. I didn’t expect for him to grow on me. Props to Rebecca for getting me to love him in this latest installment; I didn’t think it was possible.

I also truly enjoyed the “why choose” grouping in this installment. In truth, I have found that “why choose” books are not typically for me, but I could get with this one. I won’t go more in depth into this to avoid too many spoilers.

Now, for Dorothy’s character. I LOVED her. She was a great portrayal of what an Unseelie Fae might experience if they were raised by human parents in the human realm. I loved watching her find her home and her mate. She was a wonderful depiction of the born psychopath. So much of her internal monologue and actions were on point with my studies and research of the antisocial personality when I got my psychology degree. I have rarely seen a psychopathic personality so well portrayed in fiction.

Now for West. I won’t go into much detail to avoid spoilers but he was incredibly entertaining and I loved getting that snippet of his point of view.

Rebecca F. Kenney’s writing in this series is incredibly atmospheric. It truly feels like you are in Faerie with these characters, running through dark, twisted, delicious, adaptations of your favorite childhood fairytales. With more than a little bit of ✨spice.✨

A City of Emeralds and Envy was an amazing addition to Rebecca F. Kenney’s Wicked Darling series! I absolutely adore how a couple from the previous book makes an appearance each time and this truly did shed so much light on to some of the events that occurred in A Court of Hearts and Hunger.

Dorothy is not the sweet naive farm girl we’ve all experienced growing up. She is stronger and far more fierce while exploring her version of Oz. You can always count on Rebecca F. Kenney to completely deliver on hot, morally grey, Genderbent characters! I only wish the Wicked Witch of the West held a fraction of the allure West does in this book and revenge looks way hotter on him too.

Please note* while each retelling in this series is it’s own story you do truly have to read them in order to understand the storyline and characters.

It made my heart so happy to have Alice return and the crossover from a Wonderland retelling to this Oz retelling was brilliant! You have all the nostalgia of the original movie/books but with a wicked twist. The guys in this book alone made it worth the read but the journey they all experience as they find themselves as individuals and a group was beautiful. I can’t wait to see where this series goes next. RFK has become my go to retelling author and I highly recommend her books to those who love adventure, danger, and spice.

Spice Level: 4/5 🌶️ * Check TW/CW before reading

I always love the way that Rebecca manages to so perfectly describe these characters going through the motions and their thought processes in the decision making, and that theme continues here. You get a really good look inside all of these characters heads and I think that makes them all the more compelling.

There are many nods to The Wizard of Oz, which I think will have readers smiling from ear to ear and (sometimes literally and audibly) squealing in delight. At least I know I was!

I was so skeptical of how Jasper was going to fit in with the already kind of tumultuous dynamic we were left with at the end of ACOHAH, but the more I read, the more I came to see and absolutely adore how his softness sort of rounds out the group and keeps them balanced.

You can always count on a TENSE AND STEAMY buildup in these books, and the even greater thing is that the eventual culmination is never less than immaculately executed!

UGH and the morally grey villain/ enemies to lovers girlies are going to LOVE West and Dorothy! Their dynamic is nothing shy of scorching hot! 🥵🔥

I saw the authors TikTok about giving these characters the ending they deserved while she was writing and have to say that I wholeheartedly agree with that sentiment! That final chapter was absolutely PERFECT.

These characters have every bit of my heart.

Thank you so much to Rebecca for the early copy of this, my most anticipated read of the year.

tw: murder, gore, abuse, trauma, death threats, non-consensual touching, group play

"Fiero," I whisper. "I don't think we're in the human realm anymore."

Another fantastic book in the Wicked Darlings series!

In this books adventure we continue with some of our beloved characters from book two (Caer, Rhiordan, and Alice) as well as meeting some new key players (Dorothy, West, and Jasper) This time we are taking a little adventure in Oz.

We start off in the human realm and Alice is desperate to get back to her men and enlists the help of Dorothy. Whom she finds out fairly quickly is not as she appears to be and there's a whole story to be told. With both hands on the Tama Olc as Alice hands over ownership to Dorothy they are whisked away in typical how to get to Oz fashion. Soon after landing in Oz Alice discovers that Rhiordan and Caer are there each cursed and they set their sites towards the Green Wizard with a wish that can hopefully undo it all. Meanwhile Dorothy is targeted by West for the death of his sister. However, she is now in possession of some silver heels that give her protection from him for seven days as well as some special new abilities she's yet to uncover.

This is by far the spiciest book in the series and I did not want to put it down!

The Wicked Darlings series, is quickly becoming one of my most favorite series! OK, I know I say this every time but Rebecca outdid herself yet again, and her writing keeps getting better and better! This Wizard of Oz retelling is the best Oz retelling I have read yet! if you have read the 2 books before this, a court of sugar and spice, and a court of hearts and hunger then you’ll be excited to know that you get to see all the familiar faces from the past 2 books and you get to meet new ones! I have to say this is probably one of the darker, smuttiest Books that Miss. Kenney has written, but it is done so well. Steamy and intense why-chose.(Check TW) Never a dull moment, and another complete page turner! There is multiple POVs, (Alice, Dorothy, Cear, Jasper, West Witch, The green wizard, & the white Rabbit) which will keep you enthralled! There’s some hard subjects that happen, so please check your trigger warnings. (That is your responsibility😉) If you are into dark and kinky and classic retellings, this is 100% for you! 4/5⭐️ 5/5🌶 Enjoy and Happy reading, and remember; if you love/like a book, talk about it!

*I received this book as an ARC, but trust that all thoughts in this review are my own.

4.75⭐

i love love LOVED his book. I'm a sucker for retellings and this one in particular hit all the spots. I especially liked how the previous book and this one intertwined to fit both stories (Alice in Wonderland and The Wizard of Oz). I loved how the Cheshire Cat (Caer) turned into the Coward Lion, who eventually found his courage, the Whute Rabbit (Riordan) turned into the Tin Man, who later learnt to express his love and emotions more freely (thus giving him a "heart") and how the Scarecrow (Jasper) never needed a brain after all, since his love, kindness, and sweet and caring energy gave him all he ever needed. I loved learning more about the other characters as well: how the Queen of Hearts from the previous book was actually sister of the witches from the land of Oz, and the one who cursed her, was the villain in this story.

I really enjoyed every aspect of it. The plot was a lot more important than I expected
and the spicy scenes (which were also very abundant) felt like they were adding to the story most of the time (mate bonds/spells/etc.)

I could see myself rereading this series in the future.
