I liked this book, Steph Post did a good job describing things and people, making you feel like your really there. It was fun to read i recomend this book.
I enjoyed the setting of this book, I thought the author did a good job of bringing the 1930's Carnies to life. The banter between all of them and the confusion and wonder that Tom had as he joined there group was expressed really well.
I gave this book a 3 star rating because after reading the back of the book with the description of what the book was about I really expected there to be a sinister feel to the book, and to the character of Daniel as well, that the author just never really achieved. The other characters described him as evil but he just didn't seem that evil to me.
I did like how the book was ended though.
Overall, a pretty good book but not what I would call an awesome read. I think it would also be a good book for a book club to read as there are a lot of moral questions and decisions made by the characters that would make some good discussions.
Thank you goodreads and Ms. Post for this First Reads giveaway! Wow, I had a string of poorly-written, seemingly unedited/proofread independently published books and was about to give up on indies forever. The Hunter, the Hunted, and the Thief restored my faith that great works can come out of small and independent publishers! I thought this book was well-paced and, while the cast of characters was familiar, the plot was unique. It reminded me of The Princess and the Frog (the Disney movie) mixed with Water for Elephants (but better; I didn't understand all the fuss over that book). I certainly never imagined I'd be mixing those comparisons.
I really enjoyed the character Ruthie and her sensibility. Though Ruthie is a cheap carnival stripper she has a good sense of her place in the business and how to conduct herself even with the most naive boys who encounter the cootch shows. In her words, "Please remember: a body is just a body unless you really know the person that lives in that body."
Steph Post paints a carnival canvas in her prose. I enjoyed the period, setting and feel of Post's 1930s world. The simplicity of life and the humanity of her cast are dirty, dark and desperate. It kept me curious all the way to the conclusion.
I won this via Goodreads first-reads. This book is super freaky! Voodoo, hell and damnation. Definately unique, the characters are amazingly portrayed and the story is very well written, and it's a page turner, you simply must find out how it ends and it's very hard to put down!
