Determined to storm the gates and demand that this charlatan healer take her fake visions and herbs elsewhere, the hero finds himself in a completely shocking situation. However he imagined this confrontation to go, he never could have predicted that the enemy would cry for joy at his appearance and throw herself into his arms. More shocking than that, she kisses him right in front of the landlord and a patient.

The heroine was given a drawing by her mother when she was ten yeas old, showing her the face of the man that was destined to be her husband. Waiting 15 years for that man to show up has been so hard but now he's really truly here! Only, as fate would have it, she's destined to die soon so what time she has with her love is short. The hero is not given to magic or anything so impractical and he considering the heroine to be quite mad, throwing herself at him every chance she gets and insisting they are fated lovers despite never having met before. He's just returned from the city after settling his fathers affairs to discover his patients have all decided onions and tea are better healing tools than his capable medical degree. Soon he realizing that he'll be out of business if he doesn't find a way to curb the heroine's hobby. So, despite the alarm bells going off in his head, he invites the heroine to become his partner in business. She takes this as they will be working together in the same building and is beyond happy to have the chance to be close to him on a day to day basis. He is beyond disturbed by this notion as he too has suddenly found himself becoming lost in her spell. Everyone in town loves her and she tames the most unfriendly of beasts and he realizes that she too had begun to change him. Gone is his cool and put together appearance. Gone is his mental instability. And it their place came a man who has begun to unravel yet at the same time realize how much of a sham live he has been living. Seeing the heroine brightens his day and every time he's in her presence he finds himself touching her in some fashion, needing to be close to her at any opportunity. He even accepts her herbs in his office.

But when he asks her to marry him, she turns him down, sure she is meant to die and therefore will not leave him a widow. Enraged, he declares that the chance for separation has passes. Never will he let her go. She will not die, she will not be his mistress, she will be his wife. Because she brought this love into his heart and by god he will have her for his own.

I thought this book was super sweet. The sunny and cheerful heroine meets the brooding serious hero and together they cause a fire with the amount of sparks coming off the pages. From the second she sees him the heroine doesn't make any attempt to sugarcoat her feelings or play into his stern personality because she trusts in her mothers visions. The hero was obviously thrown off balance by this devotion and seduction because he never intended to fall in love or care for anyone. He didn't want to risk the pain if that someone should die. So he built his life in a bubble. It was no wonder his patients went to the heroine as she was bubbly and a ray of sunshine. But slowly and bit by bit she began to bring down that wall. His calm was damaged first as he raised his voice for the first time ever and was obviously distraught with magic mumbo jumbo. Then is was his appearance. He left a shirt untucked or perhaps he didn't shave that morning. It was all signs that pointed to a man who was falling in love and was helpless to stop it. The heroine was not a witch though her mother was and she thought herself capable for telling the future. In fact, all of her predictions usually ended with the party succumbing to damage that brought them to the hero's clinic. She eventually realizes that she didn't have powers and that the hero with his magical hands and capable medical skills was the true miracle worker. But at that point, the hero had given up on the rivalry and helped the heroine to understand her kind words and faith in the best was magic in itself. I was loved this book and found it very easy to read. in fact, I finished the book in one afternoon.

Charms is light-hearted with likable characters and set in a small town filled with busy bodies. The heroine, Leda, comes from a long line of woman who had the "sight". When she was just a girl her Mom drew a picture of the man she was going to marry & when she finally meets him she's so excited she nearly knocks him over with her ecstatic kiss. He's stunned to say the least. He's an uptight Doctor and doesn't want anything to do with the crazy gypsy girl who is stealing all of his patients (she's a faith healer) and keeps calling him "My love". But she's persistant and before he realizes what has happened she's moved her crystal ball & herbs into his office and soon he realizes he wonders how he ever got along without her. This was a really cute story, with lots of sweet characters and wow was it ever sensual. I was a bit surprised by just how sensual it was. Kane's newer books fall into the sensual category but for some reason I thought the older ones were of the "sweet" variety. Anyway, I was pleasantly surprised ;)

Leda James Irish heritage has produced a long line of 'seers' and she uses her talent to help people. When a series of near misses tells her she is destined to die soon, she decides to go to Tanglewood, ID where her only family live to see them before she dies. She helps out at her uncle's store and offers the townspeople her skills, predictions and advice until the doctor returns to town. Dr. Maxwell Evans is majorly upset to find all his patients are going to the gypsy. But he is not prepared to have Leda fling herself at him and declare that he is her destined true love, but she can't marry him because she is going to die. As you can tell from this set up this is an unusual frontier romance; often hilarious and slapstick, particularly the bumbling deaf bank robber. Very enjoyable read.
