So many great memories with this as a child. The artwork is amazing - every dinosaur is in itself an artpiece (I think it might be guache or watercolor). Short and big text makes it easy to read for kids, but honestly I think I was mostly just staring at the dinosaurs when I was a kid. I must’ve flipped through every page cause I honestly remember each and every picture in there. Truly captivating.
Dinosaurs and epic landscapes fill each and every page. The colors are amazing. Easy 5 stars. Rawr.
This is a truly excellent dinosaur book for kids. It is laid out like a proper grown up encyclopedia yet with a layout that appeals and draws the children's eyes and hands to explore the world of dinosaurs. My daughter and I have explored parts and all of this book on many times over the years and I have since bought the other books in the series - animals and world.
What the Book’s About: John Malam and Steve Parker’s encyclopedia presents brief blurbs on hundreds of different dinosaurs and other prehistoric creatures, grouped by type. Most species just get a paragraph or two summarizing their major features, but a few of the more famous ones, such as the T. Rex and the Triceratops, receive a two-page spread.
The Ten-Year-Old loves this format, because it makes it easy for her to compare several similar species and identify their differences. The book provides just enough information to keep her intrigued, and not enough to be overwhelming.
This is an older reference book on dinosaurs, and in places it shows its age. Careful readers will notice some out-of-date facts and gaps in the species list in this fifteen-year-0ld book, but it still provides a nice overview of the various dinosaurs paleontologists knew about when the book was published in 2003.
Why The Ten-Year-Old Likes It: “I like that it puts a lot of similar species on the same page, so it’s easy to see their differences. I also like that it has lots of drawings, all done by hand. Can you imagine being able to draw like that? When I try to draw the dinosaurs from this book, they end up looking like beans with hats.”
Another book that was a key component of my childhood and helped spawn my lifelong obssession with prehistory. My own version very much has the look of a book that has been dragged to at least a dozen travel destinations and been pulled in and out of shelves for years. That being said, the book is not the most scientific of books. While the colour illustrations are gorgeous and the book succeeds in creating both a general overview of the most important groups of dinosaurs and a deeper knowledge of some chosen species, the descriptions of each species are quite short and do not give more than the bare neccesity of information. The final chapter, though, dealing with the science behind an excavation, the history of the study of dinosaurs and the ways in which knowledge about the past can be obtained does provide a general insight into the science of dinosaur studies.
My special interest ever since I was a kid has always been dinosaurs and I've dreamt of owning an encyclopedia for years! I found a copy of this on vinted and it did not disappoint. It's very insightful and features lots of beautiful illustrations and species. It's a coffeetable type of book you can skim in whenever you want, so I still have lots to discover in it. Given it's from 2003 there are certain facts that have since been updated, but it works perfectly as an insightful guide!
it's a book for kids. for some reason, this adult wasn't enthralled. it's actually a neat little book, but it's very repetitive with its information and clearly designed for children to read.
Really fascinating. Each dinosaur or other prehistoric creature had one to three paragraphs of information to read about them. Sometimes predictable, and makes you want to study more from a more in-depth source.
