De auteur was docent Systematische Theologie aan het Reformed Seminary, Jackson, Mississippi en is thans woonachtig als professor in Edinburgh. Hij behandelt in drie delen het thema bidden. De basis van dit boek ligt in collegestof die hij in Amerika, Schotland en Wales gedoceerd heeft. Hij behandelt het bidden aan de hand van het Gebed des Heren. Hij probeert in dit boek duidelijk te maken wat bidden nu eigenlijk is. Bidden is vragen of wij God zo zullen dienen zoals Hij dit ons in Zijn Woord geopenbaard heeft en daarna pas of de Here naar ons zondaars wil omzien en ons wil helpen in ons leven van elke dag. Dat vraagt van ons een actieve gebedshouding. Wij mogen de Here alles vragen. Maar God geeft op Zijn tijd en wijze antwoord. Hij is verhoorder der gebeden. Maar naar de mens onverhoorde gebeden moeten ons nederig en afhankelijk maken. Alleen God weet alleen wat goed voor ons en onze kinderen is. Het boek wordt afgesloten met een gebedsrooster en een uitgebreid trefwoordenregister. Ideaal voor persoonlijk geloofsleven en geschikt voor een aantal thema-avonden over het gebed in groepsverband.

About the author

Dr. Kelly is the Professor of Theology Emeritus. Dr. Kelly received his B.A. from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, Diploma from the University of Lyon, his B.D. from the Union Theological Seminary, and his Ph. D. from the University of Edinburgh. He is the author of many written works including, If God Already Knows, Why Pray?, Preachers with Power: Four Stalwarts of the South, New Life in the Wasteland, Creation and Change, and The Emergence of Liberty in the Modern World. His firm grasp of multiple languages and his theological competence are capably demonstrated in translating such works as Sermons by John Calvin on II Samuel. He is serving with David Wright of the University of Edinburgh as a general editor for a revision of Calvin’s Old Testament Commentaries. Before joining the faculty at RTS, Dr. Kelly traveled extensively throughout the world preaching and teaching. He was also enlisted to serve on the Jurisprudence project of The Christian Legal Society and serves on the Credentials Committee of the Central Carolina Presbytery.
