All That Glitters

Rate this book
Sergeant Winston Windflower is moving on to a new chapter of his life, no longer an RCMP officer but now a Community Safety Officer in the small community of Grand Bank, Newfoundland.
But when a body is found in the bed and breakfast he co-owns, diamonds are found in the body’s digestive system, and then Windflower’s friend Dr. Sanjay, who was given the diamonds for safekeeping, is kidnapped, it’s clear that crime has returned once more to Grand Bank.
Windflower finds himself back in the thick of it, helping his newly promoted friend, RCMP Corporal Eddie Tizzard, track down a ruthless diamond smuggler who will stop at nothing — kidnapping, even murder — to pull off his dirty business.
This is another finely spun Windflower mystery that contrasts suspense and tension with the joys of friendship, family, and gratitude.

In his newest mystery, All That Glitters, Mike Martin has developed a complex mystery with plenty of twists and turns for his Sgt. Windflower and friends to unravel. It is part cozy mystery, and part police procedural, making for a multi-faceted read.
The book is full of detailed descriptions of indigenous cultural practices, with plenty of literary quotes from various famous authors thrown into conversations - sure to appeal to the fans of classical literature. The descriptions of Newfoundland settings are likewise detailed, and sure to make many feel as though they have visited Canada's easternmost province themselves.
Although this is the 13th book in the series, it stands well on its own for those who haven't read the previous installments.
Thank you to the author for the review copy of the book!

This gave great insight into the life and role of Canadian mounties, even ex-ones, to this non Canadian reader! (I was weirdly surprised when they arrive at the various crime scenes in boring old police cars, even though I do know they don't all trot around on horses so much anymore!!) Mike Martin creates an unusual take on the cozy genre with his clever entwining of police procedural and small town community and leaves no detail spared!

Canadian novelist Mike Martin is well known for his distinctive series of stories set in in the small community of Grand Bank, Newfoundland, and featuring aboriginal RCMP officer Winston Windflower, his family, co-workers and friends.

In his twelfth outing we find Windflower on the verge of quitting his job as detachment Sergeant, and devoting himself full-time to his family and making a go of the B&B he had his wife Sheila have purchased. Both the community and the RCMP are reluctant to let him go, and he has agreed to serve as Community Safety Officer in the village, reassuring everyone that his expertise will still be available.

But Windflower’s vision of a more relaxed life comes to a shuddering halt when one of the guests in his B&B is found dead in his room.

Luckily Windflower know just who to call on. Corporal Eddie Tizzard is based in the area detachment at Marystown, and Windfloswer’s old friend, Dr Sanjay, although now in his eighties, has continued to do double duty as the local coroner in cases of suspicious or sudden deaths. A search of the dead man’s room turns up nearly two dozen bottle of pills, all in prescription bottles, and all issued to the deceased, one Robert Smart.

Before long Eddie Tizzard comes up with some interesting background information on the dead man. It turns out there was an Interpol warrant for his arrest, and he was wanted by several other European police forces as well, on suspicion of diamond smuggling. A plane ticket among his belongings indicated Smart was bound for Saint Pierre, a French possession off the coast of Newfoundland which happens to have direct flights to Paris.

As lines of investigation open up, Inspector Diane Forsythe, arrives on the scene. She is finding her feet after recently being appointed as area detachment commander. Windflower is headed back to Marystown when he witnesses her car hit a moose on the highway. She is seriously injured, and Tizzard is appointed to replace her until matters become more clear. Meanwhile, the autopsy on Robert Smart reveals that he died from internal bleeding, caused when a plastic pouch of diamonds became torn, and the diamonds perforated his intestines. Not surprisingly, before long two strangers show up in the village, looking for Smart. And more concerning, Dr Sanjay disappears. It soon becomes a race against time to find the elderly doctor and solve a crime with international dimensions.

Many readers are already familiar with the Windflower series, and the many colourful characters who inhabit the tiny village of Grand Bank. They all make an appearance, from the immediate Windflower clan of Winston, and his wife Sheila Hillier, to their two young children, Stella and Amelia Louise, as well as the family pets, Lady, a collie, and a standoffish cat with whom Windflower has an uneasy alliance. There are also the local townspeople, and references to Winston’s native-based practices of ceremonial smudging and communing with his elders through the practice of dream weaving. It all makes for an engaging portrayal of maritime life rapidly disappearing from the Canadian landscape which many readers will find captivating.

In All That Glitters, the 13th book in the Sgt. Winston Windflower series by author Mike Martin, we once again get the satisfyingly familiar – family, friends, food, Winston’s smudging rituals and dreams, the comfortable community of Grand Bank – but we are also teased with “WWWD?” – What Will Winston Do? Because as we’ve seen over the course of this series, things don’t always go as planned.

Windflower has been considering a change for a while. Politics, remote and risky assignments and not enough time with Sheila and little daughters Stella and Amelia Louise have had him questioning his original plan to be an RCMP officer for life. The timing is fortuitous: the RCMP station in Grand Bank has been closed, so his new job as Community Safety Officer for the combined communities of Grand Bank, Fortune, Garnish and Frenchman’s Cove seems like the perfect solution. He’ll remain in Grand Bank with his family, is comfortable with the idea of serving the neighboring communities and will still have time to attend to their B&B. He’s not sure if this is his “forever” job but it should be challenging and satisfying enough for now.

However, just because the RCMP doesn’t have funding to keep a station open in Grand Bank doesn’t mean there is no crime there or in the communities surrounding it. And who better to step in “for just a little while” then experienced, competent Winston Windflower? The time between his resignation from the RCMP and the start of his new job was just long enough to convince him being a man of leisure, while thankfully giving him a more predictable schedule and time with his family just wasn’t his thing. Being dragged back into the daily grind, though, isn’t his thing anymore, either. Politics, danger, random hours, travel – all part of his life again. Sheila is definitely against it. Winston really is the best man for the job, even if he now has to deal with different bosses, work with good friend Eddie Tizzard and his wife Carrie Evanchuck in a reversal of their old authority positions and be exposed to danger as an outsider without the protection of the RCMP both physically and for his family if something should happen to him. But this was not part of the plan.

Part of the plan or not, there’s a lot going on that needs to be fixed. A guest was found dead at the B&B, and then diamonds were found hidden in his body. Windflower’s good friend Dr. Sanjay is kidnapped. A new RCMP Inspector suddenly dies. Smuggling with international implications is feared. Some commanding officers are behaving strangely and suspiciously. Tizzard is more than capable but he is not completely in charge, and Windflower is farther down the chain of command than he’s been in a long while. He knows there are secrets and lies and that he doesn’t have the full story and will have to rely on his experience and instinct and intuition if he is to avoid serious danger.

If all this isn’t enough, Uncle Frank’s health is failing and Winston is having some very unusual dreams and visions. One result is an amusing, surprising new relationship with Molly the cat. He seeks answers from Uncle Frank and from Aunt Marie’s spirit. Sheila and the girls are as delightful as ever and their loving little family a joy. There is a lot of fun – and funny and wry moments – in the story. Sheila is her usual independent, feisty self, the perfect partner for Winston. Stella has blossomed and little Amelia Louise can still be a handful but is growing up into a charming little girl. Sanjay’s perilous situation and absence leave a great void in Windflower, but all the rest of his familiar family, friends and co-workers make return appearances, much to a reader’s satisfaction.

All That Glitters is an excellent addition to this excellent series. Lip-smacking food descriptions, beautiful surroundings, mystical dreams and visions to be puzzled over, friends and family to cherish and worry about. Characters have developed in believable ways, making them even more likeable. As always, author Martin’s plotting is superb: logical, smooth, perfectly paced. Solving the mysteries is like peeling an onion or following a string to see where it leads and what it is connected to. The story stands on its own but you’ll be missing a lot of enjoyable reading hours if you don’t go back and start from the beginning. The ending was sensible and satisfying – and led us right back to that “WWWD?” Just what will he do next? He didn’t start the new job, and while he realized his expertise was necessary he wasn’t exactly bursting with happiness at being back on the old job. Sheila still wants him close to home and away from danger. It seems like there is a transition or turning point up ahead but talented author Martin has given us just enough information to make us very, very eager for the next installment of Winston Windflower’s story. I can’t wait. Read All That Glitters and I guarantee you’ll feel as I do. Thanks to the author and publisher for providing an advance copy of All That Glitters for my reading pleasure and honest opinion. I highly recommend this book and the rest of the Windflower mysteries. All opinions are my own.

Danger lurks!

Sgt. Winston Windflower has resigned from the RMCP and taken up a new post as the Community Safety Officer in Grand Bank, Newfoundland.
Carrie Evanchuck is assigned by the RMCP to liaise with Windflower and the communities involved.
As always family, food and good friends feature. I fairly drool from the food descriptions. The girls are growing up, are lively and greatly loved. Windflower’s loving patience is a gift to behold. His relationship with wife Shiela Hillier is solid and respectful.
Martin has a way of easing elements into the book that can be thought provoking, gently joyous, and fascinating.
Wildflower’s smudging and ceremonial smoking practices, important to keep him centred, are a gateway into First Nations practices and beliefs.
The reference to the faceless dolls great Uncle Frank brings for Windflower’s daughters are a reminder not only of those beliefs and stories, but of the many missing First Nations women of Canada.
All this combined with an unexplained death at Windflower’s B&B, a kidnapping, diamond smuggling and other events have Windflower unwillingly entrenched in RMCP activities than he wants to be. After all as a private citizen if anything happens to him there are no benefits in such situations. There’s bewildering changes in RCMP leadership and an accidental death that raises some eyebrows.
Couple all the action, peppered with quotes from both the Bard and Tagore, wisdom from Windflower’s dreaming and the wise, often enigmatic spirits he meets there, and we have another great Windflower read!

Thank you to Mike Martin for this ARC

I can't believe that this is book 13 of this great series already. This is another great installment in the story of Sergeant Winston Windflower, now ex-RCMP, as he is about to embark on a new career as a Community Safety Officer in the small town of Grand Bank, Newfoundland. It turns out to be harder than he imagined to leave the RCMP, however, as crime keeps finding him. When a dead body turns up at the B&B he owns with his wife, and a good friend is abducted, Windflower is enlisted to help his friend and former colleague Eddie Tizzard investigate. I always enjoy the way these books mix police work and serious subjects with everyday family life, and illustrate the difficulties that police families go through dealing with the knowledge that the job is dangerous and unpredictable. I also enjoy the way the author incorporates Windflower's Cree heritage and spirituality into the story, as he uses traditional spiritual practices to find balance and deal with the stress of police life. I originally started this series in the middle, and am now caught up to where I started, so I think I will have to re-read book 14 now that I know the background story and have some context.

Having resigned from the RMCP, Sgt. Winston Windflower is looking forward to starting a new job. When a man is found dead at the B&B, what follows is an action-packed storyline. When a family friend is kidnapped Winston is called back to help out, and ends up in trouble himself. I love seeing the growth of the girls, the loving relationship between Winston and Shiela, and the great friendships between the characters in the book. I would certainly recommend this book to others.

I received an ARC from NetGalley and the publisher, I am leaving my review voluntarily.

Tis coming on daylight. The sun soon will hang above Petty Harbour, Newfoundland, and sizzle the fog off the saltwater.

Tis almost showdown time in Mike Martin’s 13th installment of his Sgt. Windflower series, All That Glitters [Ottawa Press and Publishing].

But b’ys, there’s no panic, no sense of urgency. Neither Wince Windflower, nor his sidekick, Eddie Tizzard is standing in the street — or down on the wharf, for that matter — ready to slap leather, outdraw and plug some squinty-eyed villain.

Where are they?

Having a mug up.

“Tizzard went up and grabbed their food, and for a few moments they ignored the suspense and danger that was awaiting them and they were just two friends enjoying a late snack or early breakfast together.”

See, no panic.

Once upon a time, several books ago, Winston Windflower was Canada’s most domesticated Mountie, living in Grand Bank with his honey Shelia, his two children — young daughters Stella and Amelia Louise — and his dog and … well, maybe not "his" cat.

Now, Canada’s most domesticated Mountie is Corporal Eddie Tizzard — wed to Carrie Evanchuk, his ducky from another province, and father of Hughie, his toddler offspring.

Why the switcheroo?

Well, Wince is no longer a member of the RCMP. He’s now the Community Safety Officer for Grand Bank and environs and is Sarge only because local folks refuse to drop the title.

So, how come Wince and Eddie are together at dawn on the cusp of a showdown?

Diamonds, that’s how come. And, days before the showdown signaling sunrise, what seems like a mysterious death by diamonds back in Grand Banks.

All the expected regular local characters appear in this Windflower adventure. There’s even a cameo appearance of an erstwhile villain whose decomposing phantom shows up in one of Wince’s dreams. (Don’t forget Windflower is a dreamweaver like his Uncle Frank and Auntie Marie before him.)

Also, there’s a dream harp seal, a cocky wit, who makes wisecracks regarding his “wet suit”.

Oh, and Auntie Marie materializes as a dream moose.

B’ys, as regular Windflower readers you’re familiar with the antics of the wraiths and critters that populate Wince the Dreamweaver’s noggin.

Sadly, in early pages there’s a tragic example of an event that happens all too often on Newfoundland’s highways. Despite Tizzard’s cautioning, an RCMP officer fails to mind the moose.

Just think, you and I have been reading Sgt. Windflower stories for a decade or more. Tempus, as tis said, friggin’ fugits. However, I — we? — haven’t tired of the continuing Windflower saga.

(Mike old man, I look forward to Sgt. Windflower’s next outing. I’m sure you don’t intend to retire Wince after a baker’s dozen.)

I’m about to break an oath. I know I’ve promised I wouldn’t mention it again but …

… but how in the name of sweet Billy-jesus, can anyone stow away as much grub — from doughnuts to scrunchions — as the cast of characters always willing to dab their arses down for a lunch in these books?

Hey, here’s tempus fugitting like a jet plane again. The sun’s rising over Petty Harbour. Wince and Eddie have slurped their last sup of morning coffee …

… Showdown time!

Epilogue: No surprise, the villains are vanquished. Winston Windflower, one time a stalwart Mountie from Pink Lake, Alberta, conquers his feline fears and finally bonds — up to point — with Molly, the imperious pet pussycat from Grand Bank, Newfoundland.

…and squeezes his honey and plays with his kids.

…and walks his dog.

…and sits down for a nosh.

Thank you for reading.

Winston Windflower was starting a new job as Community Safety Officer back in Grand Bank, Newfoundland where he and his family live. He would be liaising with his former colleague in the RCMP, Carrie Evanchuk. Windflower had thought he would always be an RCMP officer but events, not least of which was the decision to close the Grand Bank’s RCMP office, had lead him to this new position.

What promised to be gradual transition into his new job was shattered when Windflower arrived at the B&B he co-owned and was met with the news of a possible fatality. One of the guests was locked in his room and couldn’t be roused. The occupant was indeed deceased and it transpired he was a diamond smugger, wanted by Interpol and various police forces in Europe.

Windflower found himself caught up in the investigation when a number of diamonds were found in the the dead man’s digestive system and his good friend, Dr Sanjay was kidnapped. Windflower assists his friend and former co worker, Eddie Tizzard, in the investigation. Tizzard had just been promoted to Corporal and is based at the RCMP department in Marystown. Their quarry was ruthless, stopping at nothing, including murder and abduction, to avoid capture.

All That Glitters is an entertaining mixture of cosy mystery and police procedural and, as always, includes insights into Windflower’s Cree heritage and native customs which help to ground him when needed. I also appreciate the fact Windflower has a solid family background and is without any issues. He’s an engaging protagonist, honourable and fair. Family, food and friends are other important aspects of the Windflower stories, as is the mystic element encompassing Windflower’s smudging practice and his dream weaving.

[Smudging was one of the ways that Windflower tried to maintain connection with his Indigenous spirituality. In fact, it was one of the few ways that he still practiced, and while he didn’t do it every day, when he did he found some peace and comfort. Today, he felt a little disturbed, partly because of the dead person found at the B&B, but more about the changes that were happening around him.]

Although this is the 13th book in this character driven series, it does stand on its own merits with enough included to give a new reader an understanding of the characters, their relationships and the setting.

I hope you have been reading the Sgt. Windflower Mystery series since the beginning but if you haven't, that is okay, it just gives you more books to add to your to be read pile and another great author to follow.

All That Glitters is the thirteenth book in the Sgt. Windflower Mystery series and Windflower is trying to slow his life down. He has left his job as Sergeant of the RCMP, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and has accepted a job as a Community Safety Officer. He will be working along side his best friend's wife. Eddie Tizzard and Carrie Evanchuk worked for Windflower and both have continued elsewhere but Carrie will be back to work with Windflower. And Windflower's right hand gal, Betsy, will again be working her magic looking after everything in the office.

Unfortunately Windflower is being pulled back in when a dead body is discovered at the Bed and Breakfast that Windflower and his wife Sheila run. And things get even worse when Dr. Sanjay does the autopsy and finds the cause of death to be interanl bleeding from tears caused by a bag of diamonds breaking in the deceased stomach. And when Dr. Sanjay is kidnapped Windflower steps up to work along side Eddie as Eddie has recently been appointed as Inspector when the new Inspector dies after an accident.

Things are a lot different for Windflower and Eddie as Windflower was Eddie's boss before he changed positions and the two do not get much time to figure things out before they are thrown into the case.....but both men will do whatever it takes to save Sanjay as well as catch the criminals.

Martin, as always, will have readers on the edge of their seats reading this latest installment in the Sgt. Windflower Mystery series. The characters in the books come alive in your mind and you will wish they were real and you could tag along.....but reading the book and jumping into the story will be exciting enough. Martin has always been able to open readers mind and capture your imagination and run with it. I cannot get enough of this series and LOVE where Martin takes the story.

No longer an RCMP officer, Winston Windflower is now a Community Safety Officer, but that doesn't mean all is peace and quiet in Grand Bank.
What starts off as a sudden death of the occupant of one of the rooms in the Bed & Breakfast that Winston and his loving wife Sheila run, quickly becomes a Provincial, possibly National, possibly International mystery when first of all, diamonds are discovered in the dead man and then someone is kidnapped, setting off a manhunt that will have repercussions through the entirety of this new book in the Sgt. Windflower Mysteries series - number 13!
Simultaneously, the new Inspector of the regional RCMP detachment is the victim of a horrendous accident, which sets off an interesting sub-plot of secrets and indiscretions.
Through subterfuge initially, and finally out of sheer desperation, the attempts to rescue the hostage lead to a number of interactions with possibly one of the most ruthless criminals that Winston has ever met. And it's a race to the finish that never lets up until the very last page.
What has attracted me to this series, other than the finely crafted mysteries, is the character evolutions that Mike Martin has painstakingly crafted over these 13 novels. We learn more and more about Winston, Sheila, Eddie Tizzard, Sanjay and all of the other characters as we go along, and he also weaves in - seamlessly - Winston's back story, family ties, spirituality and love of family. Even after receiving bad news, Winston prevails and grows.
I highly recommend this 13th book in the series, which could be read as a standalone, but you really should read the series.

ALL THAT GLITTERS
This is my first Sgt. Windflower book and certainly won’t be the last. It’s a wonderful cozy mystery. Murders––one of them baffling, a burglary, and a violent kidnapping, yet through all this excitement and drama it retains a wonderful, down-home charm.
It’s set in Grand Bank, Newfoundland where Sergeant Winston Windflower has resigned from The Royal Canadian Mounted Police and is starting a new job as Community Safety Officer for the combined communities of Grand Bank, Fortune, Garnish and Frenchman’s Cove.
He is also the proud owner of a B&B and does most of the food preparation. This is another brilliant aspect of the book, the loving descriptions of cooking, especially at mealtimes with family–– his wife, Sheila, and their daughters Amelia Louise and Stella.
Windflower is of Cree First Nations heritage and is also a Dream Weaver from a line of master Dream Weavers. This is another distinct and entertaining aspect to the book, the dreams Windflower has and the revelations they bring to his investigations.
While Mike Martin reveals his humorous side with many light-hearted moments, this unique and complex story shows a deep respect for Canadian heritage. All in all, a terrifically entertaining read. Highly recommended.

All that Glitters (Sgt. Windflower Book 13) by Mike Martin

Sergeant Winston Windflower has gone from being an RCMP officer to a community safety officer in the small community of Grand Bank, Newfoundland. He can’t quite escape the clutches of the Mounties, however, when a body with a stomach full of diamonds is found in the bed and breakfast he co-owns. Windflower’s friend Dr. Sanjay, who had the diamonds for safekeeping, is kidnapped, and all bets are off. Windflower steps in to help his former employee, newly promoted Corporal Eddie Tizzard, track down the diamond smuggler and save Dr. Sanjay.

I cannot say enough good things about this series. To me, it’s a true cozy mystery. The plots are topical, and filled with suspense and mystery, but the stories are always balanced out by the bonds of friendship, family, and appreciation for life. I know I’ll be thoroughly engaged and entertained, but I won’t wake up with nightmares.

Windflower is a Cree Indian, and I like how the author weaves in details of his background as the story progresses. I also enjoy the descriptions of the food – Winston is quite the cook. These books also have a great sense of place. Some day I’m going to make it to Newfoundland. If you like character driven mysteries in great locations, give this one a try.

Sergeant Windflower is back with a new adventure in All That Glitters by Mike Martin.
Now retired from the force, Windflower is a Community Service Officer in Grand Bank. But when a dead body is discovered at the bed & breakfast he co-owns, he is pulled into the investigation. Working alongside his friend, Royal Canadian Mounted Police Corporal Eddie Tizzard, Windflower must bring ruthless diamond smugglers to justice before anyone else gets hurt.

All That Glitters is a novel featuring changes for Windflower and Tizzard. Windflower is focusing on family, the bed & breakfast, and his new role as Community Service Officer. Tizzard finds himself promoted as a result of changes at the RCMP, and not all of those changes are good.

Like F. M. Meredith's Rocky Bluff P.D. series based in California, the Sgt. Windflower Mystery series blends professional and personal lives to create an engaging read. While I'm not sure what's next for Windflower and Tizzard in this plot-driven series, I'll be sure to check out the next installment when its ready. This novel easily stands alone, but it's always great to get the bigger picture by starting at the beginning.

If you like engaging mysteries that offer a glimpse into its character personal and professional lives along with a dose of mysticism, check out All That Glitters by Mike Martin and the rest of the Sgt. Windflower Mystery series.

This is a truly excellent book, from well drawn characters representing a variety of cultures and ethnic groups all drawn together in supportive friendships in a small Nfld community, to a twisty, suspenceful police procedural enlivened by quotes from a variety of philosophers and sages... and the occasional Cree spiritually based clairvoyant dream. I enjoyed this book, the 13th in the series but the first I've read, so much that I just ordered the complete series, to read it all from the beginning, along with the two Christmas oriented books. One of things I liked best was the balance between their work and their home lives as well as the respect and appreciation each major character had for the others regardless of gender, culture, race or ethniticy. Choices are made around living a life consistent with values and the needs of the family and not only based on ambition. As if all that wasn't enough, there are also some pretty great recipes! Really, I can't say enough about this awesome novel by a Canadian author.

I confess that I am addicted to this series and the characters who people it.
Sgt. Windflower is an exceptional man who did love his work in the RCMP but was torn because of the effect on his young family. Enter the reality of the severe budget cuts to law enforcement everywhere in the world. In this case it caused the shut down of the local detachment unless the building was urgently needed and the former staff were reassigned. Except for Windflower. He gave up law enforcement to be better father and husband and to run the inn that he and his wife operate. Then a guest dies at the inn and it proves to be weird when the autopsy is done, so the RCMP asks him to become a consultant even while there are major complications in the case. They also want him to be at the forefront of the new positive changes to local policing.
The story is as well written as each of the previous ones and the characters are as real as my own neighbors. The investigation is unusual and has some fascinating twists as well.

With the closure of the RCMP Grand Bank detachment, Winston Windflower is taking on a new job as Community Safety Officer. But trouble does not stop even though Windflower is no longer a RCMP officer. A man's body is found in the B&B Winston co-owns. A surprising cause of death is found by Dr. Sanjay: diamonds in the man's body tore open his digestive system. While Dr. Sanjay keeps the diamonds safe in his clinic, he is kidnapped by 2 men who want the jewels. Acting Inspector Eddie Tizzard enlists Windflower's help in trying to save Sanjay from the ruthless diamond smuggler.

This was an exciting story filled with plenty of action and danger for Windflower. The scenes highlighting Windflower and Tizzard's family life provide a nice contrast and continues to fully flesh out these delightful characters.

An expert storyteller, Mr. Martin skillfully drew me into the lives of the characters that populate this well-plotted mystery. No longer an RCMP officer, Sergeant Winston Windflower is poised to start a new chapter in his life. Having spent ten glorious days in Newfoundland, I imagined a more serene life in an idyllic community filled with supportive family and friends. That fantasy is shattered when a body is discovered in Windflower’s B & B. To add even more drama, Dr. Sanjay finds diamonds in the body’s digestive system. Kidnapping and murder follow, amping up the suspense and tension. Windflower is back on the job.

I strongly recommend setting aside long, uninterrupted blocks of reading time. This book is unputdownable!

All That Glitters
Mike Martin

Sgt. Windflower has left the RCMP or more particularly it has left Grand Bank. Eddie Tizzard is at a detachment nearby but Winston is now a Community Peace Officer. What hasn’t changed is people coming up dead. At volume 13 that feels like a crime wave.

Someone brought Moose to Newfoundland; there are now 3 per sq mile and they have no predators. This becomes an important factor in the present story.

The author is a foodie. Not only does he describe what goes into the food that gets cooked but he gives the exact measurements.

Since I just checked there really is a place called Grand Bank on the NFLD Burin Peninsula and a Marystown on the East side. Goobies is on the Trans Canada where traffic connects to the Avalon Peninsula and St. Johns.

This text has a few errors.

This is an excellent mystery series and I hope a lot of people will read it because it's compelling and well plotted.
Sgt Windflower is an interesting character, clever and strong.
I fell in love with the descriptions of Newfoundland and it's on my bucket list of places to visit.
This is another well plotted mystery, on the cozy mystery side. The pace is even, the plot is tightly knitted and it kept me guessing.
A highly recommended series.

Thanks to Mike Martin and NetGalley for an opportunity to read and review All That Glitters.

Sgt. Windflower and his wife, Sheila, are the owners of a B&B where a dead body is found. The cause of death, surprisingly, was a cache of diamonds that the victim had swallowed. Windflower's friend and the local coroner, Dr. Sanjay, was given the diamonds for safekeeping and now, has been kidnapped.

Although, Windflower has retired from the RCMP (and is no longer technically a Sergeant), he is back in the middle of excitement and danger. This is another great book from Mike Martin.

While Winston's life is deviating from his career as a Mountie, his new professional horizons look equally exciting and unpredictable. Grand Bank is a lovely, charming small town with a close-knit community feel, but that doesn't stop it having its fair share of dangerous criminals and dodgy goings-on for Winston to help stamp out. I look forward to seeing where his new life takes him next.

All that Glitters is book 13 in A Sgt. Windflower Mystery by Mike Martin. I found this cozy mystery to be a good story that is not a page burner, but I felt that the author unfolded the story in such a way that I wanted to read… just one more page. I believe that in a long series, the characters become book friends and so familiar. I thought that the author kept the series fresh and interesting. I think this is an enjoyable book. I received an arc for free and am leaving my review voluntarily.

All That Glitters takes us on another great Sgt. Windflower Mystery. When Windflower took a step back from the RCMP, he didn't expect to be caught in the middle of THIS kind of action again. And with the kidnapping of his friend Dr. Sanjay, things are now personal!

Follow along with the diamonds, death and dirty deeds. This novel will keep you entertained.

5 stars for All That Glitters.

Several things I liked about this book. I like the descriptions of scenery, the fact that family is important, and the easy pace of the story. Change has come to the roles the police and detectives play as cost cutting take effect. So missing diamonds and big time criminal leaves undefined roles in question of who cares to pursue the case.
I enjoyed the story and the characters. Well done.

Great Read

Mike Martin has written a very entertaining mystery with interesting elements of indigenous practice and foodie recipes (yum!). Sgt Wildflower & Cpl. Tizzard are great family men with young rambunctious kids who fill out their lives and bring them the note of caution they need to survive their hairier encounters. Highly r3commend.

I enjoy this group of characters. Would love to visit the area. Missed a couple books in between and need to catch them up.

I found this to be a slow-moving mystery. It picked up a bit in the middle, though. I've read worse. Also goes too much into what the characters are cooking and eating. "Oh no, some baddies showed up. Invaded the crime scene." Cop (who also owns the building housing the crime scene) - "Gee that's too bad. Now I have to go make pizza with my kids."
