I can't believe I just gave a self improvement book five stars.
It was a well written and ultimately practical guide to adding creative activities to your life in a manageable way. Any kind of creativity: writing, art, photography, gardening, dance, starting a small business, whatever you want to pursue. It also has tips on how to identify something that fits you.
It also discussed how to handle the mental battles: thinking you don't have time, imposter syndrome, financial concerns, perfectionism that stops is before we even start.
It is organized in a manner that made it convenient to refer back to specific topics easily. It was a lovely, uplifting little guide.
As an empty nester and wife to a retiree for the past four years, I have come to the conclusion that I don’t want to retire early. And Kate Volman’s book reinforces that all the more. I can have it all: marriage, family, secure job and income - all WHILE enjoying life. I never thought of myself as creative, but Volman explains creativity takes many forms. It could be a walk, listening to music, traveling, cooking, reading, writing, and so much more. It can start literally as 5 minutes a month. If you are a young person struggling with feeling like you are too busy to enjoy life, get this book. Simple, but profound and practical.
Reading Kate Volman's "Do What You Love" is like having a creativity coach cheering for us every day. In an easy to read conversational style, she debunks the myths we tell ourselves that stop us from pursuing our passions.
"We never know what is on the other side of starting," she tells us, encouraging us to take the first step toward living a more inspired life. "If you view [your creative pursuits] as a lighthouse, they will lead you back home to your true self," she says.
Wise, witty and inspirational, Volman's guide is a must read for any of us who want to explore our creative sides but who may let fear stop them from doing so. Apart from the occasional grammatical error, this book is close to perfection. It will be a staple on my bookshelf that I'll return to again and again.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
My mom gifted me this book because she knew I was struggling at work and feeling lots of stress and a lack of creativity. It came to me at the PERFECT time. I had taken a break from reading and creating due to major time constraints. And when I decided to pick this book back up, I was re-inspired and felt a new sense or purpose and direction. I felt more motivated and happy. I was able to be more creative with things at work and with personal pursuits, too! A wonderful, quick read and I loved the Inspired Actions! I hope you all enjoy this book as much as I did and that it helps you on your journey!💕
If you read one book this year, let it be this one. I added this one to my audie thinking it would be a good quick pick to listen to on my walks. What I didn't expect was that it would be so rich, that I will have to relisten to it again and probably again after that to really appeciate all of the wisdom it contains.
Good reminders to keep doing what you love even in the midst of crazy busy life schedules! Schedule time everyday for what brings you joy and happiness. Continue to pursue your dreams and desires and anything that makes your soul happy. Inspiring read.
The theme of this book can be summarized from a sentence on page 136: “Your Creative Pursuits don’t need to change the world. They are simply supposed to change your world.”
Basically, this book gives you permission to pursue your passions by explaining the benefit to your health, day job, and energy level. Creative people like me often procrastinate because we think we have to produce everything at the level of Hemingway or other top notch professionals, when all we really need to focus on is to believe in ourselves and just take that first step.
I don’t normally journal as I already have too much paper floating around my place, but plan to follow the final chapter on journaling prompts as the questions will help a creative person like me to identify and break the bondage of societal myths that hinder a creative personality from pursuing their passions.
I’ve already sent a copy to my aunt to inspire her and plan to reread it again later this year to reinforce her message into my psyche.
If you feel like you are stuck in a rut in your life right now, I recommend this book.
I ordered this book last year when I found myself overly stressed out with my job. I didn’t read it until six months later, at the beginning of this year to start a new reading challenge. I wish I had started it sooner, but since I’m a believer of things that happen for a reason, I wasn’t meant to read this book until now—a time when not only is my job still stressing me out (and also making me realize that I need to try a different path) but so are other things around me. The book is filled with many little exercises that will help you sort out your thoughts and “creative pursuits” that have been whispering to you, yet you either were afraid to listen to them, or dismissed them for other reasons.
A lovely motivational guide for anyone in need of a creative nudge. It's a quick read that contains anecdotes to inspire and practical exercises that you can apply in your life to take action towards your creative passions. A good book to reread.
This work of encouragement is full of journal prompts and deserves more than a cursory read. For folks looking to add more joy to their lives, this might make for a great weekly discussion with like minded friends.
My dad mailed this book to me out of the blue last summer and I’m just now finishing it up! Pretty good and thought provoking, and I like the message he was trying to share with me!
