Murder on the Naval Base

Rate this book
Beginning with a blurry account of a cold-blooded shooting of a couple, singled out while having dinner at an Officer’s Club, the prime suspect is apprehended hours later while apparently attempting to flee the state. With over a dozen eye-witnesses collaborating the incident, little was left in the puzzle for the military investigators to piece together; especially once it was determined the two victims were in fact the perpetrator’s wife and the man she was having an on-going affair with. After the shocking beginning of the novel, the reader in taken on a journey throughout the life and career of the characters while interlacing the technical jargon and vernacular of naval flight training and the nuances of the military lifestyle. Combined with a steamy undercurrent of lust, love, sexual fulfillment, jealousy and primordial desires of the cast of characters, the human condition of married life versus the structure and demands of military careers are juxtaposed against the strength and will of personal upbringing and ethical behavior.

Behcet Kaya is the author of nine novels. His first literary fiction novel, Voice of Conscience, follows, to some extent, his own life experiences. His second novel, Murder on the Naval Base is a fast-paced who-done-it, his recently published third novel, Road to Siran, Erin’s Story is the eagerly awaited sequel to Voice of Conscience and the fourth Treacherous Estate is a crime thriller and the fifth Body in the Woods, Appellant Judge. Murder in Buckhead, Uncanny Alliance, Deception.

Born in northeastern Turkey, Behcet grew up in a very small village with long held traditions. His rebellious nature emerged at an early age and by time he was ten, he had read, in secret, all the Turkish translated stories of Mike Hammer. In addition, he read several of Dale Carnage’s works, and all of Yashar Kemal’s novels. His world burst out beyond that of his small village and he yearned for a more western way of life.

Defying his father, Behcet left home at fourteen and travelled first to Istanbul and then on to London. His obsession was to complete his high school education and then a college degree in engineering. He supported himself by working full-time and earning scholarships from Inner London Education Authority. His creative side began emerging when his drama and literature teacher cast him in a play in which his performance awed the audience. His insatiable appetite for literature widened to include the classics of Dickens, D.H. Laurence, and the Russian masters.

While at Hatfield Polytechnic, Behcet made his first visit to the US as an exchange student with the British Universities North American Club. He made the move to the US in 1976 and became a US citizen in 1985. While living in Atlanta, Georgia he followed his creative yearnings and attended the Alliance Theatre School and studied at the SAG Conservatory of Georgia, which earned him his Screen Actors Guild card. In 1994, Kaya and his wife moved to Los Angeles, where he continued his studies at the Roby Theatre Company and the Shakespeare, A Noise Within, Theatre Workshop.

In the soon to be released movie, “Being American” starring Lorenzo Lamas, Behcet plays the part of a Turkish Defense Minister.

Along with acting, writing became a natural outlet. In addition to his three novels, Voice of Conscience, Murder on the Naval Base, and Road to Siran, Erin’s Story, Treacherous Estate, Body in the Woods, appellate Judge and Murder in Buckhead will be published in 2022. Behcet has published numerous short stories and is currently working on his fourth novel, Body in the Woods.

“Murder on the Naval Base” has all the elements of melodrama, suspense and thriller to form a tightly structured human drama. The novel describes the murder of Bevin and Charles McPhearson. Bevin was the wife of Lieutenant Anderson Garrett Belguzar and Charles McPhearson was the former friend of the Lieutenant. The victims were having an affair with each other despite the fact that Bevin was a married woman. Lieutenant Anderson Garrett Belguzar was charged with the murder of his wife and friend due to eyewitnesses present at the crime scene. The suspense continues to build as James Alpine, one of the highest paid lawyers in America was hired by an anonymous person to help get justice for Anderson. Elizabeth, wife of Charles McPhearson, was aware of what was going on between her husband and Bevin. No one would ever have first-guessed the kind of woman she was.

The writing style of the author “Behcet Kaya” grabs the reader’s attention and makes him or her want to read more. The novel is rich in characterization and language and the author has succeeded in building up suspenseful tension.

Suspense, drama, lust and thriller, all in one.

When Lieutenant Anderson Garrett Belguzar is apprehended for killing his wife and her lover, he pleads not guilty, claiming he wasn’t in any vicinity of the alleged crime but circumstantial evidence points solidly his way.

The author accomplished a true masterpiece with believable characters placed alongside streams of thrilling suspense, drama, of course sexual desire.

I have read other books by Behcet Kaya and this time he didn’t disappoint. Not that I expected him to. He is a true master of weaving different elements and creating a true artwork done with an extraordinary artistic skill.

Wonderful 5-Star Thriller!
A new-to-me author that I will definitely be following and reading in the future. His storytelling is right in your face, blunt and twisted tighter than a corkscrew. You'll be on the edge of your seat, enjoying sleepless nights in anticipation right up until the end. The flashbacks created characters' backgrounds, all the why's, the where's and the who's branded to perfection. I truly enjoyed this novel.

Interesting Story Line

I just completed reading Behcet Kaya’s book “Murder on the naval base”, I could not resist writing a review as I found deeply moved by his work. It was indeed one of the best books I ever read. The crux of the book is a murder mystery and the story begins with a double murder, one being Lieutenant Anderson’s wife Bevin and another, his former friend Lieutenant Charles McPhearson.

The description of each and every character was complete and made to the point. The introduction of Attorney’s Thomas Rudder and James Alpine, took a turn to the story at the same time, it induces an element of thrill to the already suspense filled story-line.

The story moves in to the past to unravel the mystery behind the killings and touches all domains like love, sexual arousal, jealousy, agony and crime. The author had pictured the life styles of Naval officers in a vivid manner. My full applause to Kaya for writing this wonderful book, looking forward for more such works from him.

posting review By Glenda Bixler since she doesn't have a goodreads account

Kaya's move to the murder mystery genre for this novel was a welcome addition for me, since everybody knows a great murder mystery is one of my favorite reads! And Murder on the Naval Base certainly presents a well-plotted, tough mystery that I didn't even begin to get a handle on until late in the game! You can safely think this is one mystery you won't be able to easily solve so I do encourage mystery fans to check it out!

Right away, we are confronted with a public murder of two individuals dining at the Base Officer's Club. Had they gone there, thinking it was time to begin moving toward a permanent liaison, because once they were there it was very possible everyone would know they were having an affair.

Unfortunately for Lieutenant Anderson Garrett Belguzar, the husband of the murdered woman, everybody who saw what happened, identified the shooter as Belguzar...

The amazing thing is that the author immediately takes readers into the life of Belguzar, allowing us, as well, to think of him as the one who killed them! A Twist or just allowing us to question...whodunit??

I loved the Lieutenant's character, even though Belguzar comes off as somewhat of a tortured soul. Anderson's background is a sad one and it left him somewhat shy. Still he had always wanted to attend the Naval Academy and had worked to secure recommendations to attend. Only to immediately start to get hazed by some of the upperclassmen who were sadistic enough to stick to the old methods.... Charles McPhearson had been watching and stepped in and threatened the main offender. It was only later that Anderson learned that Charles' father was an Admiral, becoming friends even though their pasts were quite different. Indeed it was Charles suggestion that Anderson visit their home during breaks and it became somewhat of a tradition. Anderson even began to pursue one of the daughters of the family. Charles was dating Elizabeth which was a family recommended partnership with neither quite sure that a marriage would ever occur... At least that was Anderson's thought when Elizabeth tried to seduce him one day...

Anderson had fallen for Bevin immediately but though they married, he was never quite sure that she was happy in the marriage--pleased with him as a lover... He knew that his continued career goals may not be what Bevin wanted, but he really had no choice but to try to move forward and gain recognition for promotion.

The news of Charles' death hit Anderson and, of course, his family hard. By that time, he and Elizabeth were married... She even seemed to have known about the affair with the woman he had been with when he was murdered... But, the shock that his wife, Bevin, was that woman with Charles sent Anderson on a downward spiral, not knowing what to do...

He was totally surprised when a well-respected lawyer visited him, explaining he was his lawyer, that an anonymous donor was paying his legal fees. Even more surprising was that the lawyer was not a military lawyer--Anderson could only be grateful and accept his assistance... Readers are then led into the actual court activities--an exciting addition to the novel as witnesses are called and Anderson's defense lawyer tries to break down their testimonies! For me, this was a highlight as I watched even the lawyer begin to worry about not being able to clear Anderson...

Suspense is tight and high as we move toward the end where most readers will be not only surprised by the killer's identity but a much more climatic ending that was totally unexpected! Loved it! For an excellent merge of military and legal fiction, this novel presents an intriguing story that also includes sex, betrayal, and extremely tense drama that pulls readers in immediately and holds them in teeth-clinching suspense throughout! High recommended.

Yet Another Master Mystery from Behcet Kaya

Behcet Kaya’s ‘Murder on the Naval Base’ is a story that grips you right from the beginning. When I started reading this book, I was unable to let go of it because I have never read about the armed forces much and I was impressed with how Behcet Kaya has woven his story around some of the best and great fighting forces of the country. As I kept on turning the pages of the book I could easily visualize the scenes in my mind. It was pure fun, as the mystery unfolded quickly but had so many sides to it.

The story is fast paced and begins with a quick account of the gruesome murder of a couple, a navy officer’s wife who is secretly involved with his best friend and colleague. The murder takes place in the Murat Officer’s Club when the two deceased are isolated from the crowd of officers. It is suspected that the murder is an act of revenge executed by the woman’s husband Anderson Garette Belguzar who is a lieutenant rank officer in the navy. But it is that simple?

The main character Anderson and his life come into focus and then a series of events in his life are put in front of the reader. Slowly the story unfolds and everything starts to fall into place. His trial in the military court was the best part of the book; you keep on contemplating whether he is guilt or not for a long time! There are also some steamy moments in the story which are aesthetically written and add up to element of the story. As you go on reading towards the concluding part, you feel like you are watching a movie.

The navy lifestyle and culture is described by Behcet in excruciating details, it was really easy to picture an F-18 Hornet take off from a flight deck of a carrier ship, huge ships and handsome men in their ironed uniforms. Author Behcet Kaya won me over with his vivid descriptions, crisp language and gripping storytelling technique. I am completely in love with his style of writing and since I have read his first book ‘Voice of Conscience’, I can tell that ‘Murder on the Naval Base’ is his second masterpiece in terms of mystery. I won’t be surprised if someone actually makes a movie based on this book.

In Murder on the Naval Base by Bechet Kaya, the readers are drawn in with immediate action: the murder of a couple while they are dining; the story only gets better from there. Kaya takes the reader back in time to tell of the events that led up to the grisly murders. The investigation and trial are riveting and will keep readers guessing with the turn of every page. This book is a must for every crime drama fan who likes to be drawn into a story from the first page until the last.

A Masterpiece of a mystery novel…

Murder on the Naval Base is yet another feather in the cap of the master story teller- Behcet Kaya. The highpoint of this novel its plot, beautiful narration and most importantly “who done it”! mystery. Though a number of sub-plots sprout from the main plot, the author takes extreme care to coalesce them all into the main plot. Thus, he grips the attention of the readers to the very end. The narration and language in this novel synchronize with each other to present a beautiful and down to earth presentation.

An excellent and much decorated officer Anderson is the pride of his naval regiment as he excels in all the assignments given to him. But his personal life is hardly honky dory. The story begins with the protagonist Anderson Garret Belguzar being shown in a confused state of mind much like Shakespeare’s Hamlet. “To be or not to be” was the dilemma of the latter; while the former is caught in the confusion of “to act or not to act”. Anderson is traumatized by illicit affair between his beloved wife Bevin and dear friend Charles Mcphearson. Even as he is ruminating about his response, the gruesome murder of Bevin and Charles Mcphearson takes place in officer’s mess.

Little wonder, the needle of suspicion turns towards Anderson, and the naval police looses no time to take him into custody. Just when, everybody including the readers, start believing that Anderson had committed the heinous crime, in comes, a leading lawyer Alphine. He gets into the bottom of the case and in his characteristic cerebral manner and turns the tide in favour of his client.

From hereon, the story unfolds a number of unexpected turns. We are introduced to a Jealous Elizabeth Mcphearson who again resembles Shakespeare’s Lady Macbeth. Alpine tears apart her masks of an innocent victim and proves her to be real culprit of the double murder crime. The icing on the cake is the confession of Admiral Mcphearson that Anderson is his illegitimate son. With that, the heart-wrenching sufferings of Anderson ends.

The novel reflects streak of biblical Abel and Cairn myth, in the sense that Anderson is suspected of murdering his step brother Charles. Behcet Kaya’s “Murder on the Naval Base” beautifully depicts the decorum and commitment of naval officers and their humane frailties in an inimitable style.

This is a murder thriller, as well as a romantic jaunt, and just as interesting about naval protocol, and court-marshall procedures; I enjoyed it. It's an easy read and quick. I figured the murder about 3/4 through, but the story itself was interesting as to the psychological issues the characters each had. I would recommend it for the story. Murder goes on all the time, but reasons for it are always much more complicated in peoples' minds

Murder of the Naval Base by Behcet Kaya immediately turns into an action packed "who-done-it". The exposition is short and to the point and goes right into the rising action to keep you hooked. Lieutenant Anderson Garrett Belguzar is accused of murdering his wife, Bevin, and 'former' best friend, Charles. There were dozens of eye witnesses and the Lt. is arrested.

This story doesn't stop with the murder. It is filled with a plethora of emotions to keep you wanting more. Flashbacks are used frequently to further develop the story and provide added suspense. The flashbacks provide an insight into the Belguzar's past such as how he meets Charles and how his life is changed forever. They both attend the Naval Academy and Belguzar envies his friend's success. A rift is starting to form between the once close friends when finally the friendship is ended when Belguzar falls for Charles' ex, Bevin.

The story doesn't end there, Kaya weaves in sexual tension, resentment, and deceit. The descriptions are so detailed I feel like I am watching a movie rather then reading a book. The dialogue in the second half reminded me of A Few Good Men and I couldn't stop but saying "You Can't Handle the Truth!". Despite the similarities, it has its own sense of originality that makes it a true page turner as you find out what really happened as the web of lies untangle.

Behcet Kaya’s Murder on the Naval Base is a suspenseful and entertaining murder-mystery adventure. Readers instantly become entrapped as protagonist, U.S. Navy Lieutenant Anderson Garrett Belguzar’s life turns upside down when he is charged with the murder of his wife and former best friend. Comprised of flashbacks, Navy life, and court room drama, readers meet a variety of characters, all intertwined to one another through the tragedy of murder.

Behcet Kaya paints a vivid picture with each descriptive sentence, while the short but action-packed chapters urge you to continue reading. After the story has been developed in Part 1, the much anticipated climax in Part 2 provides an unsuspecting twist that will keep you reading until the very end.

A story of betrayal, romance, and who-done-it mystery, Behcet Kaya has created an exciting read throughout. Perfect for mystery lovers, or for those just looking for an easy but enthralling read, Murder on the Naval Base is highly recommended.

Can you imagine waking up and being accused of murder—yet not being able to remember the act? On top of that, add the fact you have one heck of a motive, and this is big trouble! Not only will you follow along this harrowing tale and hang on for the ride, but you’ll be surprised at the many twists and turns in the road along the way. This is a great mystery to read and share with other action lovers and I highly recommend it!

The book opens with a cold blooded murder and then continue at a fast paced trot giving the reader a wild ride through the military that many don't often see or hear. I love the tension woven into the fabric of the novel and how the write intersperses drama, reality and love to tell a story that's both captivating and difficult to put down.

The characters created can easily be related too and you come to expect the unexpected as they twist and turn through the story. I love the West Point story and how each member of the novel really comes to life, as if you can sit and talk with them due to the eloquence Bechcet Kaya has taken in developing these characters.

He paints a picture with words that describes each action, motion and situation, even taking you into flight then on the ground in courtroom, and moves you through all sorts of JAG information. If anyone watched JAG on TV this work takes that drama to the next level and gives breath to the storyline of intense legal maneuvering, and mind bending courtroom drama, mixed with the sexual tension that often showed up on the small screen.

I highly recommend this book to those that love a great Murder mystery. I've not read the writers first book, but if it's half as good as this suspense filled creation then he's on track to be one of the best in the market. Very captivating and enjoyable to read, and the work flows easily from one transition to another. I found it hard to put down and thought provoking at each turn of the digital page!

Well done!

When a man’s wife and best friend or murdered leaving the officers club after dinner he is the first suspect. After all it was his wife and his best friend and they were cheating on him. It looks even worse when they find him trying to I mean what a gut punch after befriending Anderson who grew up in foster homes in group homes and to turn around and sleeping with his own wife… He had to of done it. This book was so good and so so so so so very entertaining. I have become a big fan of Bay S Kaya and am in awe of his great ability to write such good yet different stories. This is a book I highly recommend, but I have yet to run into one of his books but I couldn’t recommend they’re all so awesome!leave the area and they even have witnesses putting him at the scene of the crime… “Supposedly“

This book written by Behcet Kaya is one of the best fast paced legal thrillers I have read in recent times. I cannot exactly state this as a legal thriller but it nevertheless is a thriller which has a mystery to it that mystifies till the very end. And the court room drama is one of the most engaging of all. The story has been so intricately woven and very exquisitely narrated. The story telling was compelling to the point that I’d ended up finishing the book in a day. It had all the elements you can ask for in a book, be it suspense, murder, court-martial drama, romance etc. I have been fiercely enthused by the book and I assure you that this book will keep you glued to it till the climax. You are definitely bound to give it your sustained applause from beginning to end.

Lieutenant Anderson Garrett Belguzar has been apprehended for the cold-blooded murder of his wife, Bevin O’Hara and her lover, who is also Anderson’s friend, Lieutenant Charles McPhearson. Anderson has been known to have an impeccable record in the navy and had excelled academically in school as well. He was a personification of refinement, erudition and sophistication. Not having brought up in a secure, well-to-do family, he suffers from fears that he was gradually imbibed when he was very young. He was taken up by the most prominent and powerful civilian lawyer, James Alpine who was in turn paid by a client asking for anonymity. Anderson has pled not guilty of the charge against him. He states to not have been any where in the vicinity when the murder took place. With circumstantial evidence pointing heavily his way, how is Alpine going to defend and prove this man’s innocence. The characters in this novel are so well formed with undercurrents of sexual desire, jealousy and lust flowing through their veins. If you are looking for all these ingredients so beautifully juxtaposed and deliciously executed, then go for it.

Murder on the Naval Base offers mystery and one of the best uses of flashbacks to tell the story of Lieutenant Anderson Garrett Belguzar, his wife Bevin O’Hara Belguzar and Lieutenant Charles McPherson III up to the murders. Throughout the story, Lieutenant Anderson Belguzar sets goals and works to overcome his background and reach his goals as a Naval Aviator, yet he is charged with the murders of his ex-friend, Charles and his wife, Bevin at the Officer’s Club on base.

Elizabeth, who becomes McPherson’s wife, has outward beauty but displays character flaws that point to her evil hidden agenda. Charles’s mother’s concern for her social position and charity work, leads her to demand her son sacrifice his happiness for social position with Elizabeth as his wife. Admiral Charles McPherson II brings a twist to the story towards the end by making public his private life, which was an unexpected twist.

I do not have knowledge of the technical information presented as to the flight school and flights of the different jets but it really didn’t matter as the way it was written was exciting and held my interest. The procedures of the Naval Court had obviously been researched and the testimony built the suspense to the dramatic ending in court. The author, Behcet Kaya told a complex story with great style, lots of action and drama along with great romance so I can’t wait to read his next manuscript.

Trust betrayal
This story is about an innocent man ‘Anderson Garrett Belguzar’, who got accused for the murder of his wife ‘Bevin’ and his friend ‘Charles’. Right from the beginning the story keeps you intact and certainly takes you to the extreme of emotions. The role of Lawyer Alpine was scripted very well. One more character that caught my attention was of Elizabeth, author Kaya had brilliantly weaved the entire set of characters to the core of the novel.
The narration was amazing, especially the flashback and the current sequence moves back and forth without any hassles and to be particular the voice of Anderson's mother heard whenever he tries to date with girls shows an image that he is mentally depressed. Anderson’s love towards his wife was brought out in an elegant manner and same is the case with the trust he had on his friend Charles. But when both betrays him, for a moment we too could feel the heat. Author Behcet Kaya had done a wonderful job in presenting all emotions and feelings like Love, Friendship, Attraction, Trust, Respect, depression, betrayal etc., Though the entire story is been captured in a naval background, it did not fail to uphold the value of relationship among people.

With his second book out Behcet Kaya paints a vivid picture and shows how he has grown as a writer. When Anderson is accused of murdering his wife and best friend you will rivet with the finding of who really did it! With military intrigue and more twists and turns than a windy road Murder on the Naval Base will keep you turning the pages and wanting more from the author! Kaya's brilliant way of incorporating flashbacks makes the characters jump off the page and keeping you routing for the characters, this is a book I would recommend!

From the start of this novel I was truly hooked. Leiutenant Anderson Belguzar has been arrested for the brutal murder of his wife and best friend. It seems that from the start you are convinced that he is guilty. The puzzle does not need many pieces to fit together and while he is protesting his innocence, dozens of eye witnesses place him at the scene of the crime...or do they?

The beginning of the novel we are introduced to the main character and the crime he has supposedly committed. The author gives us a shocking account of the murder and you are automatically brought to Belguzar and his emotional state at the time. The two are carefully linked and you are guessing straight away.

We are then taken back to the beginning where Anderson Belguzar is introduced to his best friend Lieutenant Charles Mcphearson III, their relationship and the intertwining relationship he has with Belguzar's wife Bevan. A beautiful and determined young lady who captures both men's hearts.

This book is a love story tangled in a web of lies, deceit, and murder. The author has captured the reader from the very beginning, and throughout the book you are questioning the main character and his account of what has happened. He also has such a way to make you feel slightly sad for the main character especially with the hideous past he has been subjected too. He is just a lonely but extremely intelligent man who fell in love. It is not until the end of the book where the story begins to unravel and you are left feeling both shocked and relieved. The trial is written so accurately that as a reader you are totally engrossed in the whole investigation.

This book is an excellent read, capturing you from start to finish. I literally could not put it down. It is a book that you can take with you and get lost in a world love, passion and murder.

Behcet Kaya is the author of five novels. His first literary fiction novel, Voice of Conscience, follows, to some extent, his own life experiences. His second novel, Murder on the Naval Base is a fast-paced who-done-it, his recently published third novel, Road to Siran, Erin’s Story is the eagerly awaited sequel to Voice of Conscience and the fourth Treacherous Estate is a crime thriller and the fifth Body in the Woods "Appellant Judge".

Murder on the Naval Base is the story of Lieutenant Anderson Belguzar who is the prime suspect in the gruesome murder of his wife Bevin and her lover Charles McPhereson, who also happens to be Andersons best friend. With plenty of circumstantial evidence that points to Andersons guilt things aren't looking good! Just as you think there's no way out of the guilty verdict the plot introduces you to Alpine, a leading lawyer who begins to show that all is not as it seems and the story guides the reader through a number of unexpected twists and turns and introduces new suspects into the mix!

I found Murder on the Naval Base to have a meticulously planned plot with excellent character building. This is the perfect fast-paced who-dun-it crime thriller that had me on the edge of my seat right from the start. I loved this book, it had all the components I could have asked for, murder, romance, suspense, jealousy and intrigue. Personally I think this would make a great movie, and hope one day to see it play out on the big screen.

Murder on the Naval Base is a story of human frailty. The story grabs you at the throat and won’t let go until you finish the book. It is a story that misdirects the reader; you think there are dozens of witnesses, and with the state of mind of Anderson, you figure it is an open and shut case. Done. Not so, as it seems. That which is seen sometimes is not what is actually true. Anderson is charged with double homicide and he vehemently denies that he was anywhere near where the murders took place, but everything points to him and he has no alibi.

There comes a star defense lawyer who is not even a military lawyer, but has a stellar reputation in the civilian courts and his expenses are being paid by an anonymous individual. Lucky for Anderson. The surprising thing in this melodrama is the identity of the anonymous person. And of course the psychopath who commits the murders quite enjoys the events unfolding as the Naval court-martial proceeds. In the process of all this, the murderer hears their name called to witness stand. He approaches the witness to clear up some loose ends. The witness is calm and cooperative, thinking nothing is amiss. But the defense lawyer punches hard and uncovers the murderers mask. It is one of the most thrilling military stories I have read in a very long time.

Lieutenant Anderson Garret is devastated when he realizes his wife Bevin has been having an affair with a man he considered one of his greatest friends, Charles McPhearson. Bevin was the only woman Anderson had ever felt comfortable enough with to share his life, while many great memories were made with Charles and his family spending countless vacations together, but now Anderson is feeling betrayed by the two people he trusted most in this world. Not only has this affair been going on for a while but it adds salt to the wound when he finds out they were together briefly even before Anderson and Bevin were married. Yes, Anderson was upset and thought about confronting the two of them about this situation but committing murder was not an option he was considering. However, when both Bevin and Charles are shot and killed in broad daylight at the Officers’ club, all evidence and eye witness accounts points straight to Anderson. With no knowledge of what just happened Anderson is apprehended by the local police and charged with the murder of his wife and former friend.

When the trial begins the prosecuting team throws every detail out that they can, trying to convince the jury that the anger Anderson felt about the affair was enough to brutally kill the two people who were closest to him. Even though Anderson knows he did not do anything of the sort he begins to feel that proving his innocence will be next to impossible. The odds become better however, when an anonymous person pays for Anderson to have one of the best defense attorneys in the nation to represent him. Will it be enough, however, to convince the jury to decide Anderson is not guilty? Anderson’s freedom is on the line but with no other obvious suspects the defense team will have to dig deep in order to uncover the truth about this murder.

From the very first page this book had me hooked as it begins with a bang by laying out and describing the murder which had me instantly turning pages as quickly as I could. I was intrigued as I continued to read about the background of each character and the events leading up to the pivotal murder, and with a mystery book I think that is the greatest part. It is so much fun for me as a reader to feel as if I am putting together clues and facts just as the characters are but still be in the dark on a few secrets. That is exactly what Behcet Kaya did with this book as he included little details that help the reader put together pieces of the puzzle, but not enough to give anything vital away. In addition, while the opening to the story was definitely exciting, the ending had me biting my nails as there were so many unexpected twists that I completely did not see coming. This made for an amazing conclusion!

Quill says: A thrilling murder mystery that delivered non-stop secrets from beginning to end.

A brilliant account of murder, jealousy, sexual tension and dysfunction rolled into one. Lieutenant Anderson is charged with cold blooded murder of his ex best friend, witnessed by a dozen people, but pleads innocence. Is he really innocent? What is his story? What is his former best friend, Charles’s story? Did Anderson really murder him?
Kaya explores these parts of the story in flashbacks and beautifully written relationship dynamics. A thorough exploration of the military academy and fighter jets have been described for fans of the army and fighter planes.
The secrets and manipulations, the revenge and suspense, all leave the reader wanting for more. Another wonderful book by Behcet.

Understanding suspense and the pacing of action

There is something to be said about the combination of a writer who also is an actor that somehow makes tension scenes more credible. At least that is the case with author Behçet Kaya who is also known by his stage name as an actor Ben Kaya (`Fast Food', `The Practice', `Being American' on film and numerous roles on the legitimate stages such as The Noise Within among others). Whether it is the fallout of thinking though a storyline or actually taking on the role of a fictional character, the result in the case of Behçet Kaya heightens the verismo as is evident in his short stories and his novels VOICE OF CONSCIENCE, MURDER ON THE NAVAL BASE, ROAD TO SIRAN: ERIN'S STORY and his soon to be published BODY IN THE WOODS. True, his background of having been born and raised in a small village in Turkey, secretly consuming the crime novels Mickey Spillane's Mike Hammer series as well as the exemplary works of the Turkish writer of Kurdish origin Yaşar Kemal, his subsequent rebellious flight to Istanbul and London, compelled and succeeding to earn a degree in engineering, his successful introduction to the stage while attending the inner London Education Authority and his subsequent move to the United States where he gained citizenship and worked successfully to achieve is Screen Actors Guild card after studies in Georgia, and then moving to Los Angeles to embrace both his acting ambitions and writing skills - all of this is the progress of a man committed to his art - and it shows.

MURDER ON THE NAVAL BASE was originally released in 2011 but now that it is available as an eBook it doubtless will become more accessible to a wider audience. The story is a disturbing one - the kind that glues you to the page without realizing the anticipation of the author's ability to seduce the reader with vivid characters and action. From page one, during Hurricane Lori, we are faced with the cold blooded murder of Bevin Belguzar, the wife of Lt. Anderson Garrett Belguzar, and Charles McPhearson, her lover, a former friend of her husband. The dining room of Murat Officer's Club contains plenty of eye witnesses and within hours Lt. Anderson Belguzar is arrested as the prime suspect for the double homicide based on the fact that the two victims were in fact the perpetrator's wife and the man she with whom she was having an affair. Having jolted the reader with such a scene, the author goes back in time, unfolding the events that lead up to double murder while at the same time providing information about the military lifestyle as it creates schisms between the choice of commitment to naval flight training with accompanying sidebars of legal manipulation, the palpable tension during flight training, the crises of ethical values in a world that fosters illicit behaviors and affairs in contrast to the innate ethical behavior of the cast of characters. The result is a meticulous character study (fit for a screenplay!) in a setting of the duplicitous nature of military life. It is up there with the best of the military thrillers.

Kaya is a frequent member of my reading list. He is a local (relative to my area) of the Florida panhandle and a lot of the places and areas he mentions are familiar. This is especially interesting because even though this book was written years before the incident, there was a shooting at the Naval Air Station recently (in the last couple of years). Then circumstances were very different (this book is definitely fiction), and Kaya writes the book in a way that seems obvious from the start but it really isn’t. It twists in an interesting and believable way that really makes this story fantastic, and Kaya really grabs you early on and keeps the pacing fantastic.

The book starts off with the main character/suspect (Belguzar) after the murder. The book really digs into his emotional state and his vehement insistence that he is innocent. Kaya captures his desperation to clear his name perfectly, and keeps the book interesting and moving forward at a great pace. This is another great hit by the author, I certainly recommend this book!

Murder on the Naval Base by Behcet Kaya starts as a simple military thriller but quickly becomes more entangled than imaginable. Anderson comes from a dysfunctional family, leaving him alone and scarred by the age of fourteen. He spent his teenage years in foster homes with one thought in mind, becoming a naval pilot like his deceased father. Years later he finds his best friend and wife have been murdered and he is the only suspect. The trial brings out all forms of secrets, nightmares, and deceit.

Behcet Kaya is a master author that weaves his story in one direction then reveals events that twist the story completely. Murder on the Naval Base is a story that draws the reader's attention and then mesmerizes them at the end. You will wonder if justice is served to the killer and the length in which they covered their tracks.

A PERFECT VERDICT

The story “Murder on the Naval Base” written by Behcet Kaya is a devastating thriller. The book initiated with Good pace and power packed suspense scenes. It made me curious to continue reading the book until the fulfillment. The story starts with a cold blooded murder in a club where an officer and a woman shot dead without mercy.

Anderson & Attorney James Alpine were most incomparable characters in the book and it was well narrated with their physical appearance. Anderson gets disgusted when he came to know about the affair between his wife Bevin & Charles Mcphearson. He was mentally disorganized by knowing the affair and becomes restless. The real twist in the story is where Anderson’s wife and Charles were slaughtered in a club and NCIS arrested Anderson as a suspect of killing both.

The author written the scenes with variation which makes the reader to read the book interminably. As well, the expression between Anderson & Attorney Alpine was well reported and past history of Anderson and the death of his father before his birth shows the emotional affliction. The inventive argument of Attorney Alpine in the court was amazing with a perfect touch. I enjoyed reading this book and the scenes were unmitigated. This book is another gem adding to author’s crown.

This is the second novel by author Bechet Kaya, and having read both I can confirm that although the novels are completely different from each other, they are both very well-written and equally as intriguing.

Murder on the Naval Base is a murder mystery novel that is filled with tension, romance, action and uncertainty, as I found myself flip-flopping between a belief the main protagonist (Lieutenant Anderson Belguzar) is as guilty as sin one minute and innocent the next. Belguzar is accused of the double murder of his wife and his best friend and it appears to be an open and shut case for the prosecutors as all evidence points to Belguzar’s guilt. Will Anderson’s Attorney find the real truth and unearth what really happened? Well either way he has his work cut out for him on this case.

I really enjoyed the way Kaya tells this complex story. He made it so compelling that I struggled to put the book down, in fact at times I felt as though I was rushing through the pages as I was too eager to learn what happened next! The characters are so well forged that I felt from early on that I’d gotten to know them personally. I highly recommend this to anyone who is into suspense, thrillers, murders mysteries or legal thrillers. I look forward to more from the author.

Murder on the Naval Base By Behcet Kaya

I received a copy and am voluntarily leaving a review.

A double fatal shooting occurs within the first few minutes of reading. The only victims are a deceased couple, entangled in a messy affair. This is the only information that we learn for definite.
Lieutenant Anderson Garrett is a tormented soul, married to the charming Bevin. Stopped and apprehended whilst driving, he is then questioned after officers reveal the tragic murder of his spouse and the man who used to be his best friend. Making matters worse at that moment, he becomes the prime suspect of the double homicide!

What can I say, I loved this book! I have read several books by the accomplished Behcet Kaya. It’s a hard choice to make, but I have to say, this is my favourite. Tantalisingly spinning the tale from start to finish, I wanted nothing to interrupt my reading. Mr Alpine is the civilian lawyer appointed, the fees mysteriously settled by an unnamed origin. As he is the best of the best, both thorough and conscientious, they are far from being cheap. Bemused, who would do such a thing for him, the primary concern for Anderson is clearing his name and taking the best option on offer that would succeed.

Murder on the Naval Base begins with the shooting then walks us through past events. The story touches on Anderson’s childhood then his first meeting with Charles, the man who became his best friend. Life at the Naval Academy and the details of how they became close friends completes their history together. I couldn’t help but sense from first impressions something that concerned me relating to Anderson. I couldn’t put my finger on it but at certain points, alarm bells rang. I didn’t sense that he was capable of premeditated murder, but neither did I rule out the possibility of him being a killer, taken over by rage and jealousy. He came across as a loner with psychological issues because of childhood trauma, so no wonder witnesses identified him as the suspect. Aren’t such actions the ideal examples of crimes of passion?

Putting the elements of the story into place one by one as we continue to read, we can connect the dots, until the author uncovers the picture at the end.
A compelling page-turner presented very much as a puzzle, untangling the mystery the reader is drawn in, which heightens the suspense and drives the narrative.
Behcet Kaya provides careful planning and presentation ensuring an ultimate result of a gripping page-turner that keeps the audience guessing.

I rate Murder on the Naval Base 5 out of 5 stars.
