Fernando Pessoa – Uma Quase-Autobiografia

Rate this book

This "simple guide for the uninitiated" (p. 13) stands to shape the knowledge of unsuspecting and uneducated readers.
I think this José Paulo Cavalcanti added nothing to the life and work of Fernando Pessoa.
Discovered over 55 heteronyms, it is said. This is not true, as many other names are pseudonyms or fanciful without major literary production and are not disclosed to the general public, but have been cataloged by several scholars of his estate.
The central thesis that Fernando Pessoa was a "writer without any imagination" is the most absurd and criminal statement about Fernando Pessoa. Only those who have complex to see portrayed by the poet as a wealthy bourgeois, some unprincipled unless the money, the common life of materialism and gray and limited mental horizons, can claim such a freak.
My opinion is that this so-called "quasi-autobiography" is a farce orchestrated to devastate the work and thought of Fernando Pessoa, especially one that little or nothing is known in Brazil and the world (except Portugal) on the "Fifth Empire" and the decline of modern societies. Some people have an interest in maintaining the "status quo". The political ideas of person, predicting what is happening and inevitable future of humanity, are endangering their socio-economic position. Do you understand?

This book is a delight for those interested in the life and works of Pessoa. It's not just a biography: it's an analysis of his heteronyms, his thoughts, his fears and failures. It's wonderful to read about Pessoa with pieces of his poems here and there to illustrate the Cavalcanti's point of view. It is also filled with Pessoa's own points of view through his excerpts and his letters, and I must say it is wonderful to understand him through his own words.

The book is strutctured in Acts, that will introduce the reader to his early life, his heteronyms, his hobbies, and so forth. I found this to be refreshing -- there are few things more boring to me than to read an autobiography that goes in a pure chronological order. However, it also means that, towards the end of its many handreds pages, the reading can get a boring, specially when it begins to list all 127 heteronyms or the many magazines PEssoa took part in, with details.

Even taking that into consideration, I throughly recommend this book to those unaquainted with this great writer. It is easy to read, and fascinating to learn.
