Rayna Kirkpatrick has lived her entire life with a secret: she possesses dangerous paranormal abilities. But she’s carefully kept her powers hidden from the world―or so she thinks. When new struggles in her life prompt her to seek information about her abilities, her internet search sends up red flags. Without her knowledge, she is placed under surveillance by a government team who monitors people with unique gifts like hers, individuals known as Trespassers. There are only two options for those manifesting such supernatural abilities: submit to regulation and scientific study or be eliminated.
Damon Hale is an invaluable asset to the government. As a Trespasser himself, he is perfectly positioned to determine how to handle others like him. When a series of unexplained deaths is connected to Rayna, Damon is assigned to go undercover to her California hometown to determine whether she’s the killer they suspect she is. As he gets to know this kind and charming woman, he’s determined not to allow his growing attraction to her to shake his objectivity. But the deaths surrounding her are no coincidence, and as his suspicions about her guilt begin to fade, he realizes he and Rayna must work together to discover the truth or risk becoming the next victims.
Stephanie Black has loved books since she was old enough to grab the pages, and has enjoyed creating make-believe adventures since she and her sisters were inventing long Barbie games filled with intrigue and danger or running around pretending to be detectives. She is a four-time Whitney Award winner for Best Mystery/Suspense novel.
Stephanie lives in California, in the Bay Area. She plays the violin in a community symphony (but never practices enough), enjoys homemade chocolate-chip cookies, and takes pictures of birds. Her favorite activity is spending time with her family, currently consisting of her husband, five kids, three kids-in-law, a cat, and three grandpets.
Curiosity had me eagerly reaching for this one on the day it was gifted.
How long can you keep a secret? A BIG secret.
Forever is too long for Rayna Kirkpatrick. One misstep and her life is on an entirely different path.
I loved the premise and thought that the addition of the paranormal added another welcome dimension. The twists and intrigue were expertly executed, as was the pacing.
I will admit to being frustrated with Rayna’s lack of backbone. I love flawed, strong female protagonists who fight for what’s right … and that wasn’t Rayna. There’s nothing wrong with that, it’s just not my taste. I also missed the spark that more emotion would have brought to the story.
You’ll appreciate the warning about using the internet as your only form of research and about embracing your uniqueness.
This is book one of a new series.
I was gifted this copy by Covenant Communications and NetGalley and was under no obligation to provide a review.
The premise of secret paranormal abilities and a murder mystery was great but unfortunately the execution was disappointing.
After her father dies Rayna is terrified that she could’ve caused it and for the first time in her life googles her paranormal abilities. As we all know Google is evil and googling something is an equivalent of announcing it to the world, so the government tracks her down and sends a hot agent Damon to keep an eye on her. So as you can see there was a lot of potential to this story…
Rayna was such a frustrating doormat! She was Captain-America-level perfect (also his level of fun), which was not very credible and frankly a little boring. She was such an angel she couldn’t even defend herself when her life was in danger 🙄. Damon on the other hand had no personality whatsoever. I was hoping for some romantic tension between the two of them since attraction was mentioned in the premise, but alas.
The writing was a little emotionless and not particularly thrilling, especially for a thriller, and the ending had me rolling my eyes.
So yeah, there were things that bothered me in this book but all in all it was light and easy to follow, (and I didn’t guess the killer right) so 2,5 stars generously rounded up.
Thank you Covenant Communications and NetGalley for the chance to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
Holy Cow Batman!!! I was so drawn into this story from the beginning. Which, I of course figured would happen because that's the normal for me when I pick up a Stephanie Black book!!! I devoured it! I couldn't set it down once I started. And oh man, I was guessing and kept changing my guesses for who the bad guy was. I love when that happens! I love to be surprised and having twists and turns and a not clear cut villain. It was deliciously suspenseful!
Rayna has a lot of surprises in store for her and not all of those are happy or good. I loved seeing how she navigated them and was a bit on the edge of my seat as her secret started to surface and how some of these mysterious deaths were happening.
Enter Damon, a Trespasser, who is trying to determine is Rayna is good or bad. There were so many times that I was nervous for Rayna and worried about what was going to happen to her. I wanted to cover my eyes but couldn't cause then I wouldn't be able to finish her story and know that she was ok or not.
There are some pretty intense characters who helped weave this story together and I loved it!!!! I'm sooo excited for everyone, especially fans of Stephanie Black's writing, to get this one and read it! Wowsers, it's a good one!!!
Content: Clean. Full of suspense, death, kidnapping, murder and such but not overly graphic. I would let my teenagers read this.
I received a copy from the publisher, Covenant Communications, via NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions in the review are my own.
Wow! What an exciting beginning to a new series! This book had me guessing, second guessing, and guessing again as Stephanie Black weaves a suspenseful, hard to put down, paranormal mystery. It reminded me of an Agatha Christie novel where you’re on the edge of your seat not knowing who the real murderer is and everyone is suspicious. Throw in the paranormal angle and it makes for one spellbinding read!
Rayna Kirkpatrick has a dangerous, unique ability she’s kept hidden. Feeling alone and wanting more information, she does what anyone would do, searches the internet. Not the best move if you’re wanting to keep a secret. Her searches send up red flags, and unbeknownst to her, she’s now being followed by a highly secretive government group who seeks to monitor and investigate individuals with paranormal powers known as Trespassers and eliminate them if necessary.
When Rayna’s father dies, it’s ruled as natural causes, but there are too many questions surrounding his death. When another person associated with Rayna dies, it’s time to intervene. But, is Rayna to blame for the deaths, or is there someone else behind the murders?
Damon Hale is a government agent and also a Trespasser. He’s been sent to Rayna’s small California town to investigate her and the murders. As he gets to know the artistic, charming, kind young woman, he finds himself questioning whether she’s responsible. When another person is almost murdered, the two team up to try to uncover who’s responsible.
I loved this book! The atmosphere is fantastic and I enjoyed the ambiance of Willet Beach. Rayna’s such a sympathetic character and she’s set up perfectly as a suspect. The changing dynamic between her and Damon was so good! I loved how they go from antagonistic to a hint of romance. There’s always this palpable attraction between them just below the surface.
The ending will have you reeling as all the clues finally come together. There’re a lot of twists and just when you think you know whodunit, there’s another twist. I loved the intense soup scene. IYKYK All these lead to an exciting nail-biting conclusion.
I really hope this series will continue! I can’t wait to know more about the Trespassers and see what’s in store for Rayna and Damon! I received an advanced complimentary copy from the publisher. All opinions are my own and voluntarily provided.
This book combined suspense with the paranormal. Rayna can sense heartbeats, what her family doesn’t know, what no one knows is that she can also control other’s heartbeats too. She can even stop a heart.
After her father’s death some of her Google searches lead an undercover government official to her town to keep an eye on her. He knows about her powers but needs to determine how she uses them. When a string of deaths connected to Rayna occurs, he can’t help but wonder how deeply she is involved.
The premise of this story was very intriguing. I loved learning about the Trespasser powers and how they could be used. I stayed up far too late to finish this book because the suspense pulled me right in. I can already tell there will be a second book, but this one wrapped up pretty well too.
The only thing I wanted more of was the romance. There’s a hint, and I hope it develops in the next book, but I wanted more.
The Trespassers is a new suspense series by the wonderful Stephanie Black. This author writes some of the best mystery suspense novels I've read. I couldn't wait to read the first book in this new series. I want to say, my high expectations were met!
The interesting part about this suspense novel is that the main character Rayna has paranormal abilities. As she investigates her "powers" she signals to a secret government group that she is a "Trespasser". When a Trespasser is found they have two choices, either they go along with this team and become one of them or they become eliminated.
The suspense part in this novel are the many deaths that are happening in Rayna's hometown. So many clues lead toward Rayna being involved in the deaths. I couldn't believe how things were stacking up against her. Damon Hale is a Trespasser sent to investigate Rayna. He also is seeing Rayna as a killer but the more he gets to know her, the more he is confused by the facts and his feelings. Of course, day by day Rayna and Damon can't help but grow closer together and there is a definite attraction.
There are so many things happening in this novel, that you can't read fast enough as you gather clues. The accusations are flying hard and fast and everyone is looked at as the guilty party. Red Herrings anyone? Do you notice I'm not giving you many clues about the deaths and who could be guilty? Well, this is what I do because I want you to read this amazing suspense novel. Trespassers is going to be a brilliant series and I can't wait to read the next installment.
I was excited when Stephanie Black announced she was starting a new series with a paranormal element. I had no idea what to expect but knew I'd be reading it since she's been one of my favorite mystery/suspense authors for years, but this book blew me away!!
Rayna wants a quiet life in a small town, making and selling her distinctive pottery pieces, keeping her paranormal ability to herself, but her internet search about that ability alerts a secret government agency to her whereabouts and they start an investigation about her father's death. Damon Hale, who has the same paranormal ability as Rayna, is the investigator assigned to determine if she's dangerous.
There were so many things pointing to Rayna being guilty of several deaths I was worried her family would start believing she had killed those people. Even Damon questioned if Rayna could be guilty, because the evidence against her didn't fit the person he was getting to know.
Kudos to the author for another amazing, gripping story. I didn't want to put this book down! I needed to know who the guilty party was and their motive(s). There were so many suspects I couldn't determine who the killer or killers might be! I changed my mind several times then finally gave up trying to figure it out. Let's just say I was shocked! I certainly hope this is the beginning of a series because I'm ready for the next book!
I received a complimentary copy from the publisher via NetGalley. All opinions expressed in this review are my own.
What an absolutely fantastic story! I'm so glad the author has confirmed this is book 1 of a new series.
Rayna has a special ability of sensing people's heartbeats. Her sister knows and her parents had her hide it and didn't understand it. Her Google research brings Damon to town to investigate her undercover, but as the events around them escalate, the situation turns perilous.
The writing is phenomenal, as usual, and the concept so intriguing and original. I loved Rayna and her fierce loyalty, and Damon, trying to do what is right and keeping everyone safe. I thought the main villain was this one person but turned out to be someone else, which was a surprise!
Lots of action and suspense, growing friendships, escalating insanity and mysteries keep the story going and unputdownable.
Can't wait for more!
I received a copy from the publisher via NetGalley and this is my honest opinion.
“Unfortunately, your remarkable abilities can also be used as deadly weapons.”
The Trespassers by Stephanie Black is a fast paced, character driven wild ride. The plot is unique and Trespassers are fascinating and quite scary in what they can actually do. I loved every nail biting page. My list of suspects changed frequently because everyone’s motives were sketchy. A seriously brilliant book with Black’s writing at its very best. Such a creative plot with strong characters, some I loved to hate.
Thank you to the publisher for the Netgalley approval. I can’t wait to see more from the Trespassers.
A new paranormal mystery from Stephanie Black. Rayna Kirkpatrick has a secret ability. After divorcing and the death of her father she returns to her hometown on the northern California coast. She is happy to be back with her sister who has always kept her secret. Internet searches looking for information about her mysterious skills alerts an off the books government agency and she is put under investigation.
Damon Hale has similar abilities and is referred to as a Trespasser. In the small town he is posing as a writer and interviewing local townspeople and especially Rayna. When a local ends up dead who has a past connection to Rayna he begins to think she may not be as innocent as she appears. Other deaths, her father included, have occurred when she is near.
Overall this is an interesting mystery and compelling to read. It slows a little in the middle as conversations are had and then repeated, telling the same information to different people. Also Damon himself is stirring the pot, by listening to gossip or outlandish tales and giving them some credence. At times Rayna comes off as too passive but a lot of that is because the government knows about her and can control her by threat. A few things get brought up only to be dropped, like why is the sisters store in trouble, but it doesn’t affect the mystery. I really liked Detective Stafford when ever she was involved.
This is a clean book except for some physical threats. The story ends a bit open ended so I’m not sure if there will be further work for Rayna and Damon to do. If there is more I would love to read it. Thank you to NetGalley and Covenant Communication for the ARC and I am leaving a voluntary review.
Don't be fooled by the blurb; this really isn't a love story. It's a tense murder mystery with a paranormal twist. If you read it looking for romance, it's upsetting. Best to just enjoy it for the jolting thrill ride that it is. :)
I had this figured out very early in the story but it was still very suspenseful and hard to put down. There were some unexpected things that kept me very engaged. It is a bizarre premise and there was a lack of full resolution at the end so this is really more of a 3.5 rating and not a full 4 but definitely worth the read.
The initial premise was bizarre but as the plot developed it became just a minor part of the story line, important, but it didn't constantly dwell on the weird stuff, it became just another murder mystery. It had a lot of fun twists and turns. Some parts were obvious and some surprised me a little. It was a fun read.
I loved this story that is full of suspense and just a bit of the unexplained. Rayna has quirks that her parents tried to ignore, Her sister knew and is supportive. Things begin to unravel when people start dying around her that are connected to her,
Damon belongs to a government group that works to find people that have quirks like Rayna's. Then there is the matter of determining if they will use their quirks for good or for evil.
The plot thickens and Damon and Rayna are left wondering if they can trust each other, Rayna starts questioning every interaction and acquaintance. She can't be the murderer, can she? Damon fights through the same questions.
Stephanie Black is a master of tension. This book is a page turner that has mystery and suspense at every one of those turns. The tension between the main characters and even some of the surrounding characters. There are clues and red herrings that leave you scratching your head.
Ultimately, I loved this story. It has just a touch of the supernatural which is presented in such a way that I feel like it could be plausible. I loved that it feels based in reality but really allows for the imagination to expand.
I received an early copy from the publisher through NetGalley and this is my honest review.
4.0. This was a different genre than I usually read. I guess it’s OK to read a different kind of book every down again. But the deaths surrounding her are no coincidence, and as his suspicions about her guilt begin to fade, he realizes he and Rayna must work together to discover the truth or risk becoming the next victims.
Okay, suspense fans this book is one of the suspense IT books of the year! I almost missed out on this book this year due to other commitments and am so glad I gave in. I know this author's work well (I've read everything she's written) and knew what to expect and even with knowing all of that-I WAS STILL BLOWN AWAY by how amazing and unique this book was!
Wow, Wow, WOW!!
I loved the paranormal suspense added to this new series (please bless it's going to be a new series!) I was locked into this book from page 1. It was all I could do to get through my day once I had started it because I needed to know how it ended. I was sure I knew who the suspect was all along, but then some new plot twist would turn up and leave me guessing again. There was so many twists and turns that the pages kept turning and I stayed up late into the night finishing this one...I will also report that while there was a high level of suspense, I was still able to sleep after finishing it!
There isn't a lot of romance in this-mostly an insinuation that the main characters are developing feelings for each other but it was enough sprinkled in to keep the romance lover in me content while the suspense lover in me thriving.
I am REALLY hoping this will be a series and we will get to see more of Rayna and Damon-not to mention more Trespassers!
Highly, HIGHLY recommend if you love a good suspense read!!!
Thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley. All thoughts in this review are my own.
Content: mention of past miscarriages, abusive relationships (emotional and physical), paranormal abilities, death/murder/who-done-it, small beach town mystery and hints of romance.
How are ratings so high?! So many cheesy things in this book! The medical testing and the ending, she’s so amazing and should join the gov group. I was laughing at the end (not supposed to be a funny book). BUT, it’s definitely good, clean fun 😁
I loved all the red herrings in this mystery with a touch of the supernatural world. It was fun trying to follow all the right bread crumbs to figure out who dunnit and why. Can't wait for the sequel.
4.5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✨️ This was a clean para-normal mystery and romance. The characters and their relationships were compelling. I enjoyed the government sanctioned pra-normal investigative agency; it was such a fun idea for a story!
I did guess the murderer early on but had to wait for confirmation. Red herrings were trown at us, but I stayed with my gut feeling and was correct!
I may have to check out more books by this author.
If you read very many book reviews you'll often see phrases like, "I couldn't put it down" or "I stayed up all night reading this", admittedly I tend to wonder if they really stayed up all night or if they just said that to help express how much they liked the book. So, when I say that Trespassers by Stephanie Black kept me up all night reading I want you to know I mean that quite literally! I got ready for bed crawled under the covers and thought "I'll read for a few minutes then shut off the light" the next thing I knew it was 6 a.m. and I'd read the entire book!
This book is full of twists and turns you didn't see coming, and chapters end on such good cliffhangers that you HAVE to keep reading to find out what's going to happen. The paranormal twist to the plot was unique and added an interesting layer to a typical mystery novel. The characters, the plot, the level of mysterious intrigue was all top notch! I mean wow, just wow.
I read a lot of books similar to this style of mystery novel, but this is by far the best one I've read in a while! Stephanie Black hit a home run with this one! I can't wait for book 2!
Thank you NetGalley, Covenant Communications, and Stephanie Black for the advanced copy of this title. All thoughts are my honest personal opinions.
Language: G (0 swears, 0 “f”); Mature Content: PG; Violence: PG Only the members of Rayna’s family have known of her uncanny ability to sense life around her, but they don’t know how that ability has evolved. On the day of her father’s death, Rayna (31yo) desperately searches the internet for answers. But internet searches are monitored, and Damon is sent to evaluate the level of threat Rayna poses. Black has consistently written interesting thrillers, and I was excited to meet her new character with an unexplained power to throw an extra game piece into play. The mystery’s conclusion is satisfying, and I am hoping this turns into a new series because Black is sure to take unexpected turns with the new supernatural avenues made possible by Rayna’s world. The only thing I didn’t like in this book was the underlying romance. Rayna and Damon’s beginning is not the greatest for a functional relationship. Rayna and Damon are implied White, and Maggie is Black. The majority of other characters are implied White. The mature content rating is for mentions of alcohol and sexual harassment as well as for discussions of pregnancy and miscarriages. The violence rating is for death, gun use, mentions of suicide, and murder. Reviewed for https://kissthebook.blogspot.com/
This was a great read. It was the perfect amount of suspense and intrigue. I really like the fact that the trespassers have these abilities, but they’re not like super heroes, or that kind of concept. I hope in the next books of the series we will get to understand more about these abilities, and how many trespassers there really are.
The relationship between Rayna and her sister and Marie was very well written and believable. I struggled with Damon’s character for a while. After we were told about his previous experience, it was more understandable, but I still thought he was very harsh. I was surprised who the killer actually was. I am hoping something good blossoms with Damon and Rayna in the next book. This book should be in your TBR pile!
Here’s a quote that stood out to me:
Rayna: “She doesn’t have to be guilty of everything to be dangerous.”
I was given an ARC from Covenant and this is my honey review.
Oh boy! I needed this book! I will patiently wait for book 2...not. But it is definitely a stand alone - but gives the best enticement for more! I loved the premise and the storyline was absolutely believable and enjoyable! 5 STARS for this book!
Stephanie Black's newest book, The Trespassers, introduces a new series of suspense novels and I already wish there was a second book available to read.
The story centers around Rayna Kirkpatrick, a woman who has unusual abilities which she has only partially shared with a few close family members. In her need to know whether there are others like her and if so, glean as much information as possible, she decides to spend a couple of hours searching google, which triggers a government investigation of her.
The seemingly kind, yet sometimes ruthless Damon Hale is sent undercover to determine and act on the answers to two questions. First, do Rayna's online searches indicate she has the ability to "sense" the presence of specific people and what they are doing within a certain area? The second question; if the answer to the first is yes, does she also have the ability to "link- kill" a person by stopping their heart through her mental powers? A person with these abilities is called a "Trespasser."
A Trespasser's use of their mind to kill results in a crime that cannot be proven. It's a national security threat. The implications are enormous. The situation needs to be dealt with FAST.
This creates a dilemma between two options for Damon. The circumstantial evidence indicates Rayna has murdered multiple people. If correct, she needs to be pulled out of her current life, questioned, tested, and then eliminated so she can't kill again. He can't afford to make a mistake on this and considers whether he should wait a bit longer before interceding, based on the diminishing chance that she might be innocent. If he makes the wrong decision; treats her as a murderer and then she is found to be innocent, he will have ruined her life, resulting in a high likelihood that she'll have nothing to do with their secret government group who are in great need of her skills. On the other hand, if he waits much longer and she is a killer, his inaction may contribute to the death of another person. And then there is another murder.
This begins a well written, captivating mystery. There were no dull moments. I was unable to predict the outcome as there were multiple surprises in the plot's twists and turns. The characters are terrific. I especially liked Rayna, Damon and Maggie. It was VERY difficult to put this book down at 1:45 am, and yet I was glad the story was not over as I was able to pick it up later that day and still enjoy reading what were the last couple of hours of the book.
It will be interesting to see where the author goes with this new series. There is the potential for quite a variety of different plots to explore and tales to tell. With Stephanie Black's creativity and expert writing, it will be fun to try to anticipate where she will take the next Trespassers Suspense novel.
Thank-you to Covenant Communications, Inc., Netgalley.com and Stephanie Black for providing me with a complimentary copy of The Trespassers in exchange for my unbiased review.
"The Trespassers" isn't exactly what I expected, but I still enjoyed it a lot.
The story takes place in a normal world, with the exception that Rayna Kirkpatrick possesses some paranormal abilities which she thinks is unique to her. Taunted by her father for her whole life, she never revealed her power to anyone outside her family nor did she attempt to learn more about it, until one day, when she caves in and does an online search. This attracts the governments' attention, who sends Damon Hale, a guy with the same supernatural abilities, to investigate her. As a series of unexplained deaths happen simultaneously, Rayna is suspected of being a serial-killer, and Damon doesn't know what to think of her anymore.
I'm not a fan of paranormal novels, so I really appreciated the fact that this book is basically anchored in real life, save for the Trespassers' special abilities, but it's nothing too important—indeed, we don't even know if many Trespassers exist, it seems to be very confidential. The suspense was pretty intense, but not in a scary way, so I'd nearly call this book a "cosy mystery" taking place in a small Californian, seaside village. The author was great at mixing trails, I jumped from suspecting one person to the next, without trusting anyone—at one point, I nearly thought everyone in the village was a culprit!
The secondary characters were well developed, with the two protagonists, Rayna and Damon, are a little bit flat, we don't know that much about them, they rarely have strong emotions, everything with them seems controlled, they don't have much uniqueness about them—save their paranormal abilities.
The book's officially summary mentions Damon's "growing attraction" to Rayna, but in truth, there is nothing really romantic between the protagonists—which is actually pretty refreshing, to have them just be tentative friends. There's only a hint at a pretend romance towards the very last pages of the book, which makes me think the Trespassers might become a series, and I'm here for it!
