Rate this book
Book #2 in the Vigilare series.

A red hue emerges, where once it was only emerald green!

Now accepting of her position, Vigilare is propelled into a twist on Greek Mythology's Cerberus―Hell Hound―a rival Vigilare with fire capabilities. ETNA harbored her blood. Have they created a monster they cannot control? Along with her motley crew, the dashing Detective Tony Gronkowski, wily hematologist Dr. Godfrey and suspicious Emily Truly, Vigilare comes face to face with her past in the form of the hellish one.

As the city of New Orleans and its Gambini mafia family are under siege with Vigilare drones, the power hungry Emily wastes no time in solidifying her place in the ranks when she exposes Vigilare to the menacing Hell Hound. Newcomer, Maxim Kiesel, the steel blue-eyed prodigy graced with icy powers may very well be the antidote, or the ultimate traitor.

Will Vigilare give up her role, sacrificing her immortality to stop Hell Hound? The second in a trilogy, Vigilare: Hell Hound―when power is given, the true testament of one's character will rise.

There aren't many books in which the sequel is better than the first, but Vigilare: Hell Hound definitely delivers, leaving the reader eagerly awaiting the next book ... From Greek Mythology, paranormal, sci-fi, mystery, suspense, to uber-hot romance, there is literally no stone left unturned -- extremely well-written, captivating, and enticing... Two Thumbs WAY up and highly recommended ... From a huge Dean Koontz and Stephen King fan -- time well spent, my friends... time 'well' spent :)... Can't wait for the next book in the series!

I read the first book in this series, Vigilare, and thought it to be really good. But the second book, Vigilare: Hell Hound really tops it! The characters are driven and the addition of Maxim and the hell hound makes for some really exciting reading. The book has changed it's setting this time from Vanguard to the Vigilare compound and the Big Easy. I really liked the world-building in the compound, seeing how Vigilares are trained.

So the Hellhound is uncontrollable, but they try to do it anyway. The Vigilare will have to sacrifice something to do so though. What ensues is plot twists, action packed sequences, superb character development and what you end up with is something sexy, gritty and unputdownable! I just loved everything about this book, even the surprising moments. I definitely can't wait for the third book in this series. There's something for everyone - paranormal, urban fantasy, suspense, romance, science and more! Put this series on your wishlist!!

A very intriguing read.

Just as the first book in this trilogy this book explores the fine line that lies between good and evil. Are you still a good guy when you kill someone even if he's done very bad things? Is it evil to want revenge? What does it take to turn someone from good to evil?

This book was less violent than the first one, but just as dualistic and it made me think about my own world views. The story was really interesting and full of action, mystery and deceit.

I did have some trouble with some of the characters. Most of them had world views I couldn't share and that made me dislike and distrust them. I really liked Tony though and Vigilare is a very intriguing character as well. Her growth and change throughout the story was interesting to read.

All in all this is a cool and intriguing read. I'm curious how this trilogy will end, so I will most probably pick up the last book to satisfy my curiosity.

What do I think? I think Brooklyn needs to publish book three! Seriously, this series is quite different than her first novel ("The Boots My Mother Gave Me") but in the first two books of this trilogy and "Boots," she makes her characters come to life. All three focus around strong women, and seeing as you get back in your life people in the image you project, strong men. Words and actions are inspiring; though you may not see the effects yourself, you know it's true. And of this I speak from experience. If I hadn't read "Boots," I would never have read this series. For every "Boots" reader, I suggest you read this series. For every non "Boots" reader, I suggest you read all three. "Vigilare" just when you think you know what is going to happen ... sort of like the ending to the movie "Inception," will the top stop spinning or not? Is it really happening again?

"Reads fast and easy! Definitely enough intrigue to keep me turning the pages. Brooklyn James does a great job of pulling you into her stories.

As a woman, I really enjoy the heavily populated female cast. And the representation of the women in this novel is tremendous. They're strong and adept, yet flawed and vulnerable enough to allow readers to empathize and relate to them. Don't get me wrong, there is a formidable male cast in this series as well, what with the charming Detective Tony Gronkowski and newcomer, Maxim Kiesel. I look for him to become an even larger player in the third book. I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised at the interplay between him and Emily Truly. I enjoyed seeing the softer side of her, her humanness.

Being a bit of a self-proclaimed geek, I love the science and the folklore entwined in this series. James has written an intriguing premise, with an ending reminiscent of Anne Rice's Taltos chronicle." -Amazon Review

"This is the second book in the Vigilare trilogy. I have to admit, I liked this one even better than the first. The first book is action-packed, dark and intense. The second is all of those things, but it's even more character and plot driven, which I LOVE! I feel like I'm coming to know the characters better, and what drives them. Speaking of characters, I love the newest addition-Maxim Kiesel. And readers will experience an unexpected character to resurface. Made an awesome twist in the story line. Very Heathcliff in Emily Bronte's Wuthering Heights. It created a triangle of sorts, allowing my mind to race, wondering who the Vigilare would end up with.

Brooklyn James has done a fine job of tightly knitting together a storyline and a cast of characters to peek and keep any reader's interest. With the combination of action, suspense, intrigue, romance (this is a very SEXY series), science and heart-Vigilare: Hell Hound is a fast, entertaining read. Impatiently awaiting book #3 in the trilogy!" -Amazon Review
