I never believed that I would have to live through a zombie apocalypse. One day I was Ed Kirk, a normal sixteen-year-old boy with a loving family, a beautiful girlfriend, and a full life ahead of me. Now I'm on the run from zombies, being hunted by a dark force that threatens my very existence, all the while trying to escape this town and find help. Oh, yeah, one more thing: I'm a zombie too!
Publisher Description: An unknown virus has turned most of the world into flesh eating zombies, and one teenager, Ed Kirk, has contracted it, but it is working through him slowly and he doesn’t know why. He finds his girlfriend, Lisa Jane, and together they fight to get out of their small town and seek help, meeting up with some strangers along the way. Will they be friends or foe? At the same time, they are being pursued by a dark force unknown to them. They must try to find help or a cure before Ed completely turns.
Review: Cool cover art. I liked Ed Kirk and Lisa Jane. They were this blend of post-apoc dynamic duo meets the Blue Lagoon. Ed Kirk is half zombie, meaning that the virus didn’t fully take. There is this fear that as time progresses so does the virus and a cure is tantamount to not just Ed’s survival but humanities. Lisa Jane is his smart, funny, totally hot GF that sticks with him even when he begins to struggle with the effects of the virus. They meet up with some people that are unaffected, including a high school jock that has the hots for Lisa Jane. What follows is some internal strife and much chasing by hoards of zombies.
This novel was engaging when the story didn’t dwell in the past . There were quite a few pages spent on life prior to the zombie outbreak that seemed excessive. Perhaps a little less time down memory lane would have sufficed. The ending was typical for a series….no resolution. The characters were well developed and the story line had good pace when rendered in the now. This was definitely a YA book but I had fun reading it.
I loved this book. Ed is a everyday guy who has hidden leadership abilities that are developing throughout the story. When placed into a bad situation with the zombies he still keeps it together because Ed is a hero. Lisa Jane is strong, smart and a very good second who can kick but all by herself. This book was a page turner because I couldn't wait to read what happened next and I cheered them on throughout the story. It is a book that anyone can read and I would read it again this time next year.
I got this ebook from Netgalley in return of an honest review. It seems that this will be the year of zombies for me. I don't think I ever particularly cared about them until this year, when I read Zombicorn by John Green and saw REC3 (I recommend it to anyone who would appreciate a cheesy, violent spanish movie about a disease that turns people into flesh eating monsters from Hell). This was such a fast-paced survival story set in a world where a plague as turn almost everyone into zombies. The main character, Ed, is slowly turning into one and he's fighting, alongside his girlfriend, to find a cure for his condition. In my opinion, he was a really cute character, and it was a pleasure to read from his point of view. But he also felt a bit unrealistic at times, like maybe he was too perfect, too much of a good guy. I did love his relationship with Lisa, his girlfriend. You could really feel the love they had for each other, and nothing could keep them apart, not even (partial) death. Overall, it was kind of cheesy, but just enough that it didn't make me hate it and gave the story the cute moments and pauses it sometimes needed. The zombies they run into in their journey were people they once knew and the flash backs Ed gets at times really show the realness of the situation and it all felt very personal and emotional. It truly gave this story another side to look into: the side that breaks your heart when you think 'What if I was in this situation?' It was so moving and sad, and it might have been my favourite part about Ed Undead and the one I don't feel there's anything negative to point out. It just shows how a teenager would see this situation and deal with everything he knew gone. I would have liked to get to know a bit more about some of the side characters, like the mother and daughter they run into. Sometimes I forgot they were there because everything kind of revolved around Ed and Lisa. Also, Ed's sister and father really got to my nerves, but that is not even a bad thing, it was exactly like I felt you were supposed to feel about them and I think the author did that very well. Finally, I absolutely loved the ending. I wasn't expecting it at all, but I feel like I should have. It caught me by surprise and left me there wishing I had the next book in my hands. I will definitely be reading Dead Like Me, because this book raised so many questions that were left unanswered. Overall completely recommend it, especially to a younger public.
As expected, zombies populate this book, complete with rotting flesh, sunken eyes and mindless shuffling gait. They’re not my favourite characters, but if you like zombies, you’ll like Ed Undead. It’s a strong story that never bores, and Ed, the 16 year old almost Zombie, shows us what true courage is.
The story is set in a post apocalyptic world, where a plague has turned most of the population into zombies whose only concern is finding some living flesh to tear into to satiate their hunger. Ed has the virus but hasn’t turned into a zombie – yet. He hopes he never will and aims to find someone with a cure, if there is one, before the virus takes him over the edge. The living dead are after him and he and his girlfriend, Lisa Jane are running and fighting for their survival.
They team up with a mother and her child, and for a short while with Ed’s rival from school. Lisa sends him off when he shows himself too cowardly to help her out of a sticky situation. Throughout the story, Ed has flashbacks to life as it was and these are very well handled. He faces zombies that were once people he knew and the remains of others who became their food. It’s gruesome stuff, but the writing keeps a good balance between description of the details and not over doing the horror. His grief as he recalls what he has lost is real and moving.
The author called it a paranormal romance, but I’d call it urban fantasy. Ed and his girlfriend are in love, but that doesn’t make it a romance. This is more action based than character and relationship based, and the main issue is escaping the zombies and the strange ‘boss’ that some of them refer to, rather than overcoming obstacles to a relationship as in a romance.
Regardless of what genre you stick it in, it’s a good yarn and I think boys in particular would like it. The two main characters are strong, but I would have liked to have got to know the mother and daughter better, and Sam Ed’s little sister seemed a bit silly for a ten year old. I think her character could be developed further.
I give it 4 stars and a place in the Awesome Indies listing. Ed and Lisa are great characters to spend time with, even if it is in a zombie infested town.
Zombies, hmm, when I first started reading the book, I expected nothing else that chasing, some action, one person who is very powerful, just chasing, killings and blah-blah. I thought there was nothing else that can be done with the topic like zombies and vampires which either have 1 variety or is used it the same way over and over again, or the other. My mind and outlook was so narrow about this topic, may be because the recent movies with different names and almost same story made it that way, my expectations were 0. So i started reading in that perspective. By as I kept on going further, i was surprised, shocked, and moved in every way possible. Unlike other “so much similar” movies, this book was very different. While reading I went through a mixture of emotions, first of all shock, then sad moments, romantic moments, and the moments when you have to make THE hardest choice in your entire life time and most importantly keep pushing even when there is very less hope. I won’t deny the fact that there was no chasing, human flesh eating zombies, and a little(not so little) bloodshed, but the point that there are so many questions that would arise while reading the book overshadows all the other common stuff. Why is Ed still a half zombie? Who was this HE that wanted him? Mostly it showed how the life of a teenager would be affected when everything he knew around him was gone, which I think most people neglected. I would say it was “the best” zombie book I ever read!
You wouldn't think that Zombies, dead people walking, would be so fascinating, but being it is. When the book ED UNDEAD became available by the author, Edward Kent, I jumped on the chance to read it. I was totally intrigued by the book and enjoyed it very much. Imagination will have to kick in but that shouldn't be a problem. Here's a 16 year old,, Zombie to be, being chased by other Zombies but not eaten. Why? Not known. His name is on a list of some sort. The author lets you watch the characters and their behaviors. You will become interested in the relationships that the characters had. The book ended with you thinking that Book 2 is on it's way. I'm not sure, but I certainly hope so. You will never be bored reading this story. There are some good values brought forth in this Zombie tale such as courage. This may just be the right book for men and boys. I would recommend it to everyone, young, young-at-heart, men, women, girls and boys. There seems to be a fascination with Zombies among everyone. Great read.
I would give this book 5 STARS
The cover is great also, another 5 STARS.
I was given a complimentary copy of ED UNDEAD from the author Edward Kent for this honest review.
I really enjoyed reading this book. One of the reasons is the attention to detail ! I really felt as if I understood the way Ed reacted to certain situations whilst being a zombie. My brain is now jam packed with zombie survival. The second reason is the relationship between Ed and his girlfriend absolutely nothing got between them, even death. The way they felt for each other was like a magical love story. This book was extremely well written with a great understanding of character building and little details. I feel this book is worthy of more than five stars and would recommend to all my friends.
I really enjoyed reading this book, that's why it did not take me long to finish it. I was hooked, the storyline was amazing and the characters were so well developed. I wouldn't have called it a romance though however, that did not put me off at all. Strongly recommend this book to everyone interested.
This book was captivating. I was drawn in from the first page and found it hard to put down. This is a definite must read even if you aren't a zombie fan.
I was given this book in exchange for an honest review via Netgalley.
I read this with my daughter and we enjoyed the references to our locations close to our hometown. She was always begging me to read more. I was glad I read it that way I could skip over some of the colorful language.
Awesome Indies Book Awards is pleased to include ED UNDEAD – THE CHRONICLES OF A TEENAGE ZOMBIE by EDWARD KENT in the library of Awesome Indies' Badge of Approvalrecipients.
I just loved this book! It had great writing, compelling characters and story that catches your attention from the beginning and draws you in! I just couldn't put it down!
I received this book free to review from Netgalley. It sounded interesting. Zombies and all. But, it was boring. I read and skimmed to about 25% and then gave up on it.
