The suitable lover, the unsuitable lover: the unsuitable lover to reject or hurt the heroine or simply fail to satisfy. Then there's the suitable lover, who's everything the unsuitable one is not. Skip's the unsuitable one. He thinks. Slash, if you care.
A very confusing story about a boy named Skip/Christopher and his start/stop romance with Marcus. I kept waiting for the big payoff to explain the story & why he acted so odd, but the reveals kept getting more and more absurd . Maybe this was some kind of strange comedy. I don't recommend this even if it's free because it was all very nonsensical.
Skip has a hard life, and has learnt not to depend on or develop relationships with people as he has found he will only screw it up. Yet, as we learn about Skip, it slowly becomes apparent that he is not as to blame for these screw-ups as he thinks it is. In fact, it seems clear, to me at least, that he has been unbearably let down by those who should be there to support him when things go a little pear-shaped. Instead, everyone tends to see everything in the worst possible light rather than giving Skip the benefit of the doubt, or even a chance to explain himself, and as a consequence, loses everything - his family, his friends, his home and his education.
When he meets Marcus, in an effort to not get hurt and to protect himself, his actions end up hurting Marcus, so Marcus also jumps on the anti-Skip bandwagon, and so fulfills Skip's expectations. And unfortunately, it seems that Marcus is inexplicably linked to his past life, adding fuel to Marcus's ire when he finally connects Skip to the guy his friends have derided for years.
Honestly, I felt that Skip was ultimately betrayed by everyone and how he continued to accept taking the blame really ended up getting on my nerves (although on one hand, I could see how it would arise as the people he trusted to be fair and honest - his parents and best friend - were not). his Even when Marcus realized some of the truth, and made Skip's old friends and family see that they were in fact not only wrong, but cruel, no-one actually apologized for tearing his life apart, and some even refused to acknowledge they were wrong at all.
This story left me both sad and frustrated, as it seemed that even Marcus didn't always act in Skip's best interests, although he supposedly understood exactly why Skip became the damaged person he was. I so wanted to slap some sense into Skip's family and friends, and despite Marcus at least seeing the truth, wanted see Skip find someone better... Arrgh! Skip was given a very poor deal indeed, and I would have liked to have seen him realize that he actually deserved more from his life, not to mention apologies and reparations made, rather than continuing to believe it was only what he deserved.
Oh, one other thing; all the characters are rather unbelievably linked in a very intricate - and sometimes unlikely - manner - so it made things more difficult to follow, and unfortunately, strengthened my belief that Skip deserved a lot more than he got.
