Briar makes a deal with her school's star basketball player, Darcy, to fake date in spite of their glaring differences. But when she finds out he drinks blood with his sack lunch, and that her ex wants his kind dead... she might be in over her head. Darcy agreed to be Briar's “boyfriend” until the end of the school year. Now, if he could just control his tottering teenage-vampire hormones, and be rid of the intrusive romantic thoughts about Briar (that are coming much more frequently than he would like.) J Type 1 diabetes, teenage dramatics, and vampire stereotypes, they may not make it to graduation. For the fans of teenage vampire novels Vampire Diaries, Twilight, and The Chronicles of Vladimir Tod. This is a grumpy/Sunshine Vampire tale you don't want to miss!
When I tell you it was a GIFT to read this YA, Paranormal Romance, I mean that with my entire chest.
Wildrose has such a talent when it comes to writing romance, and lovable characters. From the very beginning, I was pulled into the vortex that was this story, and I was happy to be trapped there.
In Too Sweet, we follow a grumpy, high school girl named Briar. Wildrose included plus-size representation, and an accurate depiction of what life with diabetes looks like. The story touches on real struggles, diverse parent/child relationship dynamics, and of course, vampires.
Darcy is a sunshine basketball player who would do anything for anyone, even Briar. This type of cinnamon roll love interest is my drug.
We have well fleshed out side characters, a plot that is well paced with high stakes, and a pinball scene that won my heart.
Heartwarming, charming, and delightful, this book takes everything you’d ever want and mixes it together for an experience you won’t regret.
An addicting, fast paced, character driven novel that made me feel a thousand things in the best way.
I am giddy like a high school girl who just got kissed for the first time!!!
To say I loved this story is an understatement! I smiled throughout reading this entire story. It gave me the feelings! Definitely a feeling of nostalgia, like reading Twilight for the first time, even though the only similarities are there is a vampire guy who happens to fall for a human girl. Briar (fmc) is a complete and total grump and Darcy(mmc) is the epitome of sunshine, which I absolutely loved! Briar has type 1 diabetes and has struggles of worrying about her health, her absent parents, and her ex-boyfriend. Then Darcy waves at her at just the right time, as her ex is being just ugh, so starts the fake dating of her and Darcy. Darcy is just swoon worthy in all aspects of this book, and I am so happy someone like him came into Briar’s life. WE ALL NEED A DARCY! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK! It just made me feel giddy and happy!!!
The Queen of wit and banter has brought us yet another marvelous dish of a perf YA tale *Chef's Kiss*
"Too Sweet" alternates between the story's main characters; moody, unapologetic, baddie, Briar, and sweet, sassy, cinnamon roll, Dary. What starts off as typical High School shenanigans, (the old fake dating to make the ex jealous trick), unlocks a deep closet of secrets, passion, and life-altering events. But of course, the entire story has its healthy dose of Wildrose's famous wit and banter, with a heavy sprinkle of OTP moments, and you may or may not have times where you're unconsciously holding your breath from the epic intensity. Don't say I didn't tell you so!
"Too Sweet" brings on authentic and realistic teenage feelings and dialogue that's entirely refreshing to experience, along with exposure to a main character living with diabetes and the enlightenment, education, and gratitude that comes with growing close to a character that lives alongside such a daily challenge. Though, the character doesn't let it slow her down in the least!
Throughout all of Wildrose's books, she continuously presents her readers with incredibly well-developed characters that explore their journey with pushed boundaries, impossible decisions, and organic growth you're proud to read. And "Too Sweet" is nothing short of a perfect example of what YA books are all about. To say Wildrose takes care of her characters and her readers is an understatement.
I highly recommend "Too Sweet" to those who frolicked the fields of Vampire fantasy, and even those who haven't but want to test the waters. I feel incredibly lucky that this was my very first Vampire read, and the bar is set pretty high now! Bravo!
Overall I liked this book but it definitely needed some better editing. Like there was some dragged out bits sure but the overall plot was cute and different with the mix of teenage love and vampires while also remaining pretty realistic with exceptions.
As usual, please enjoy a copy and paste of my notes I took (please note I have been type 1 diabetic for 10 years):
She changes her set twice in one night? No one would do that. You'd leave the set you just put in and do a new cartridge. Meanwhile we all know the cost of the set is weirdly more than the cartridge.
High carb is the grilled cheese at the roller rink? 2 slices of bread is averaged 30g carbs bro - unless this roller rink does fancy thick bread which in that case maybe 40g. It's not cute to call that high carb. And I don't like the other low key food shaming in this book. Yes she ate candy but I dunno something about this was irksome to me.
What are peoples problems with contractions? You're, we're, don't, weren't, you'd etc are your friend fam.
The twilight H joke lol
The fact that they keep refering to themselves is off putting? Almost like they were narrating themselves but not fully commiting to it lol
CON👏🏻TRAC👏🏻TIONS👏🏻
The way the teenagers constantly use the word teenager like "you are as scared as every other teenager" is so off-putting. Like, I would have said kids or something else
I like that they called the parents to save them 😂 finally smart teenagers lmao
"Too sweet, let's get you some insulin"

oh I loved it!! From the very beginning, I had a lot of fun reading both points of view. Briar was so sassy and sarcastic and Darcy was so cute; and I giggled and laughed a lot with them. Briar has type 1 diabetes, and we got to see her dealing with it in her daily life -which I didn't think would happen. I loved being in both of Briar and Darcy's point of views and them fake dating and the development of the plot. It was quick to read, and I'd definitely recommend reading it if you're looking for a fun YA paranormal romance!
This book is absolutely adorable. It's a cozy, cute vampire meets diabetic girl high-school romance. I absolutely loved reading it, the dialogue was always so entertaining. And I'm so glad they went from fake-dating to the real thing. I think Briar and Darcy are perfect together. I really hope there is a sequel, so I can see how things turn out between Maisie and Crispin.

This book was so cute and a breath of fresh air! It had a gloomy FMC and golden retriever MMC and they are literally the cutest! I found myself literally laughing out loud and kicking my feet at this one!
This book was fine. There was nothing wrong with it but it felt very elementary romance. I really liked the main characters and the reverse grumpy x sunshine story, but I felt like the plot was sort of predictable.
Such a fun YA book. I loved the concept and how inclusive it was with the characters and the issues they faced. Well written and interestingly cute. Fun easy read.
I have never been more obsessed with reverse grumpy x sunshine than I am after finishing this book! Briar is a high school senior and is never happy. She's had to deal with a lot in life, a Type One Diabetes diagnosis at age 5, then her dad left them soon after, and her mom works long shifts to pay for Briar's medical supplies and insulin. She doesn't respond well to kindness and she's currently recovering from her first break-up ever. A break-up that ended in a rumor being spread about her, and her ex continuing to bug her. She just wants to fade to the background again, so she hatches a plan to fake date the new senior, Darcy. So if her ex Morgan broke up with her, why all of a sudden is he possessive and jealous of her dating Darcy.
Darcy is the sweetest mamas boy with a morally gray layer & he's not allowed to date because of the part where he's a vampire! But when Briar, the emo girl who intrigues him starts a rumor that they are dating, he goes along with it and they hatch a plan to fake date until graduation.
Darcy is the sun rays to Briar's moonbeams and it will just never work, right? Definitely not if Briar's ex, Morgan (*whispers* he's actually a vampire hunter) has anything to do with it.
I loved the sweet romance that blossomed between the MCs, and I absolutely loved and appreciated the Type One Diabetes rep. My brother was diagnosed at 6 years old, & he's my best friend in the world, I'd take it from him in a second if I could. The way that Monroe Wildrose wrote Briar's struggles and feelings with her diabetes had me in tears at points because I know they are real and true feelings that kids and adults with Type One have. I remember tear filled nights with my brother as he struggled as a young kid, being mad at his diabetes but not feeling like he could express it because he was so young or didn't want to make my parents sad. Stuff you shouldn't have to deal with at any age, let alone 6.
Anyways I'm rambling. Loved this book. It's an important book. You should read it. Also, is there going to be a sequel? Because that epilogue was from a POV I wasn't expecting.
From the authors own acknowledgments that had me in tears again but is such an important message:
"Things could be worse, there are much worse things to be diagnosed with than Type One Diabetes, but that doesn't mean your struggle isn't worth expressing. I see you, and I know how hard you fight to control your sugar. More importantly, Briar and I know that some days you just can't do it anymore, and you're tired; that's okay too. You are so strong, and I'm proud of you."
I rated 4 stars because for me personally I would have enjoyed more of an inside look into Morgan and his family to warrant the extreme climax that happened in this book. It came out of left field a bit for me since the majority of the book wasn't solely focused on vampires or hunters at all - just hints given.
This book gave me massive 10 Things I Hate About You vibes combined with Twilight. Overall, it was just fun!
It's super easy to read, and the narratives from the FMC Briar and the MMC Darcy were so funny and sweet. I loved the reverse grumpy and sunshine trope combined with the fake dating, it worked so well and I really enjoyed seeing both the characters fall for each other. The romance was definitely needed on Briar's part, and I liked how Darcy wasn't the typical MMC. He's sweet and emotional, and such a golden retriever, as well as a vampire.
Briar is such a goth girl, and definitely has black cat energy. I really loved the plus size rep and her confidence, but what I really liked was the positive and almost informative representation for type 1 diabetes. It was well described and incorporated into the story.
Plot wise, this book could've definitely been built upon some more. The world building was more told than shown, and when it came to the vampire aspects I would've loved to see more of their world. The sudden action near the end felt a little out of place, and I think that the book needed more hints and foreshadowing to really make the ending feel that bit more dramatic.
Nonetheless, Too Sweet wraps up pretty well apart from the epilogue told from one of the side characters, Maisie. We get a hint at what's to come in the second book in the series with her and Darcy's brother Crispin's marriage of convenience.
Just to start this off with the author with each book that is produce it nocks my socks off everytime!!
If you love a sunshine x grumpy trope this is for you!! But wait......the sunshine isn't the female lead!!! With the female lead and the male at first it starts a little rocky but as the story progresses they begin to change. With representation of plus size, diabetes , diverse parent/child dynamics, and really life struggle I feel it makes the story more relatable with everyday compared to other stories. I feel I connected with this story on a personal level.
Darcy is such a sweet cinnamon roll and how he tries to help everyone even if they at first don't warms my heart. He would literally do anything to help someone. Briar at first seems cold but once you get to know her you get to connect to her on a real level and feel her struggles on why she does the things she does (don't ever let a person pressure you into something even if they "care for you") During the story especially I connect with her during my school days and I wish I could be as outspoken as she was (I love how she knew everyone in the office by name and principal knew her immediately).
I would 100% recommend everyone to read this even if you are in high school because trust me we all have been there and we feel the same.
Thank you so much for giving me the gift of being able to read your book!
I will not lie, going in I was a bit biased because I've steered away from high school romance as I've gotten older, but this is so tastefully done.
It gives that glimpse of the innocence of high school feelings, while accurately displaying how that intersects with real world, not so high school issues.
Our sunshine boy has a huge family secret,✨ vampirism✨. For this 18 year old, it's not all Victorian mansions and bats for him. He's a regular kid, having to navigate high school while holding a huge part of himself back.
Our grumpy girl deals with an issue that also makes her hyper aware of her nutritional intake, type 1 diabetes.
While Mr. Sunshine deals with his stresses by letting everyone in, she does the opposite. However, they both are amazing children who love and respect their parent(s), and are deathly afraid of being burdens or disappointments.
All this combined, my favorite part of this book is their friendship and loyalty to each other and their friends.
Can't recommend this book enough!!

I received an advanced reader copy for free, and I am leaving a review voluntarily.
Young adult vampire romance/ no intimate scenes/ kissing and making out
I don’t get into young adult romance much, but I was intrigued with the synopsis. This was a little slow going, but once it started picking up I got really into it.
Briar is definitely a grump and she coughs up an attitude a lot with her teachers and other students, then Darcy comes along for fake dating and to get her ex jealous and he is her sunshine that she needed.
Darcy was so sweet and good to Briar, I really liked seeing their relationship build the more time they were around each other.
I also liked that there was representation of type 1 diabetes with Briar in here and the way that insurance really makes you jump through hoops just to get life saving insulin. I really like learning more about the disease.
🩷Title: Too Sweet: A Highschool Vampire Romance 🩷Author: @m.a.wildrose 🩷Pages:239 12/29/2023🩷12/29/2023 🩷Favorite Quotes: "I know why everyone said he dumped you. I also know that high school boys are stupid and will say untrue things to protect their fragile egos." "I hated the weak part of myself that wanted to accept his soft smile and let it thaw my chilly disposition." (I couldn't pick just one favorite quote, not sorry.) 🩷What I Liked: -The whole book from the cover to the story was precious. -I love that Briar wasn't your usual character description and that all body types are fucking beautiful. -I love that they had the main character have diabetes and sent a message that you are not a burden to your loved ones. 🩷What I Disliked: -I can't experience this book for the first time ever again. -morgan and his family existing😂
So, I guess it's a good sign that I wish the story was longer. For a cute, short, low-stakes story, I really want a continuation. I want to see how Briar and Durcy grow as people. And the "relationship" between Crispin and Maisie is something else; especially by the end. I would love to see more of all four of them and their journies together and separately. I feel like these people all deserve a longer run time and character development. The diabetes representation is a breath of fresh air as well, and I can not state that enough. Oh, and the shifting of POVs for every chapter for Briar and Darcy was the BEST WAY you could tell this kind of story. It was amazing to walk through.
I'll definitely come back to this story as a palette cleanser between heavier books. And just to nail it home, I'd love a continuation. I want to see these people grow!
I grabbed this book on a whim as part of stuff your kindle and I am so pleased I did. This was such a pleasant, refreshing take on the high school vampire romance trope. Darcy and Briar are a reverse grumpy-sunshine pairing. I loved the chronic illness rep with type one diabetes. I loved how open and respectful the characters’ relationships were with their parents. There’s plenty of discussions about teen issues as well. The book is safe/clean for younger readers and champions being comfortable with who you are.
Random extra thought - I adored the scene where the girls go shopping for their prom dresses at thrift stores to encourage sustainable fashion. LOVED it.
I got this book during Amazon's "Stuff Your Kindle" Day and honestly, I wouldn't have minded paying full price for the book. It was a delightfully quick read that got me smiling a few times due to how sweet and cute some moments were.
Some parts were a little clunky to read, and I had to re-read sections to parse what the author was trying to convey, but Wildrose does such a good job with making the cast likeable and the romance between Darcy and Briar believability sweet that any issues were more endearing than frustrating.
A great little quick fix if you’re looking for a YA paranormal high-school romance or if you're in the market for the 'sunshine golden retriever boy' x 'grumpy rain cloud goth girl' pairing.
This book did not go where I thought it would, but BOY DID I LOVE IT!!
I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes when I was 5, so when I saw that Briar, the fmc, was a T1D I couldn’t download this book fast enough! I never thought that it would mean so much to have an fmc be so relatable in that way, but it truly struck a chord with me and I felt so seen- not to mention the dedication and the first part of the acknowledgments, I was teary-eyed just from that 🥹
The characters and plot truly were a perfect storm of swoony, comedic, and even twisty- I could NOT put the book down during the last 30%!
Highly highly recommend for anyone who enjoys YA romance, paranormal romance, rom-coms, and fantasy!
This is such a fun twist on the teen vampire story. I was obsessed with twilight and this gave me so much nostalgia for teen vampire genre. But even while it held all my favorite vampire tropes (Hunters, secret society, forbidden love ) it was so unique and had a fresh and captivating story all its own. Grumpy and foul mouthed Briar shows us that we can be loved just as we are, and gives a glimpse into a life where chronic illness is the true villain of the story. I loved every moment of this book and just devoured it. Can't wait for the next book!
Darcy is the most golden retriever sunshine boy you will ever meet and Briar is very much the opposite. You will fall in love with these characters while they are falling in love with each other. The characters start somewhat accidentally fake dating so Briar can get away from her ex’s harassment. The fake dating becomes not so fake, in an opposites attract kind of way.
This book has - High school romance - fake dating - grumpy X sunshine - plus size rep - disability rep
It gives cozy vampire vibes and you should definitely add to your Halloween tbr.
DNF at 3% and deleted from Kindle with extreme prejudice for use of that fucking stupid "unalive" term. And no, not in an ironic sense because this is a vampire book, I mean as the censorship word for "suicide" like a professionally published book is supposed to be miles away from fucking Xitter and fucking Wattpad and especially fucking TikTok. Feel free to check out the below Tumblr link thread for a more thorough explanation while I go off to fume and least be grateful I didn't spend any money on this.
Grumpy sunshine but make her the grump and him the sun. This YA novel brought a solid punch of emotions we look for in any story with its countless adorable tropes and well written characters; but deeper than that, there is the awareness of what having Type 1 Diabetes demands and the reality that comes with any auto immune disease. Briar is a very confident and overall tough girl. Some people may call her a bitch, but I call her my hero. She is the girl I WISH I was in high school and will forever look up to this fictional character.
I really enjoyed this book. For me it qualifies a cozy/comfort read.
Too Sweet has great representation for midsize & type1 diabetes which is not often seen.
Honestly I could see this as a cute romcom that I watch on repeat. And I mean that 1000% in the best way.
I adore our mmc, Darcy, a teen vampire who is as sweet as peach pie , a cinnamon roll, who is a contrast to the usual darker vampire portrayals done. I do with there was more moments though showing his struggle with being a vampire.
This book was absolutely fantastic! The main characters have been thoroughly fleshed out, without being too overwhelming or in your face with being “unique” as some books in this genre are guilty of.
It was pure adorable and I am so so honored to have been an ARC reader! Her storyline had me so deep in my own feelings I couldn’t help but cry at certain moments, while genuinely laughing loudly at others. She has true talent in this novel about learning to accept who you are and let others in to help you. Trust me, read this!!
I randomly found this book searching for vampire novels during a stuff your kindle day. I was diagnosed at 18 with type one diabetes 14 years ago. This is the first time I have EVER in movie or book seen an accurate portrayal of being a person with T1D. I immediately had to investigate whether or not the author was T1D.
The story as so good and so cute.
But the accurate representation really resonated with me. I found myself in tears sooo many times. Some of Briars thoughts are truly the things I speak or have spoken to myself.
