Just when things seem to be bimbling along for Souichi and Morinaga, an unwelcome surprise awaits them when an ultimatum suddenly looms: "Do not meet ever again!" Find out who issues this terrible edict and if the romance is over for The Tyrant Who Falls in Love! It's more angst ridden laughs in the latest installment of the boy's love favorite from Hinako Takanaga.
Takanaga Hinako (高永ひなこ) is a Japanese author of Boys' Love manga. She has also provided illustrations for several BL light novels by other authors, including The Guilty by Katsura Izumi. Her first manga story, 合格祈願 (Goukaku kigan, Prayers for a passing grade?), was published by Hanamaru Comics in 1997; it was later reworked as the first chapter of Challengers. Most of her works have been translated into foreign languages. She was a guest at YaoiCon 2007, invited by Juné, the US publishers of her popular series Little Butterfly. When not making Boys' Love manga, she spends her time collecting Wallace & Gromit merchandise and playing Final Fantasy. Takanaga doesn’t like beer and people who are ignorant.
She comments that her biggest influence on her art and writing-style was KOUGA Yun, a famous shoujo manga artist whose works she read as a teenager.
Sempai is starting to get on my nerves. I know, I know... he is a straight guy and he is afraid of having developed these feelings for a man. But why does he have to say such hurtful things to poor Morinaga? Like he was 'forced' to do all the things they've done? Yeah right, 'forced'. Sempai, do you remember the times when YOU were the one who kissed first Morinaga? It was not just ONCE, but TWICE, if I recall correctly.
AND Sempai is always receiving, not giving. Could you please say at least NICE things to Morinaga? Instead of punching/kicking/rejecting him? AND then you say you do not care about him? So why do you have to be such a TYRANT to forbid him to see an old friend?
Seriously, sometimes I want to punch Sempai in the face. He keeps denying his feelings for Morinaga AND making him suffer.. AND then he wants to make love, but at the same time, he says he doesn't -WTH!-
Takanaga Hinako has always been a hit or miss author for me; she's got a few really nice works but others are either too heavy on the comedy or graphic side. The Tyrant Falls in Love lands somewhere in between which makes it a really difficult one for me to rate. I love the characters, it's got just the right amount of humour and a nice enough story. But at the same time, there are a lot of problematic themes and a lot of the story is just contrived and dragged for the sake of adding more sexual scenes.
It's been a long time since I last read it and I remember struggling with it back then already. No matter how you twist and turn it, the story starts off with one of the main characters raping the other. Never mind that he says sorry and the other eventually accepts the apology, I just found it difficult to go along with the story knowing how it started. That being said, I do actually really like the characters, not just the main ones but also all the side cast - my favourite is probably Isogai, the seemingly only straight male character in the whole series who's just hilarious.
The story in itself is also not bad, it does raise some interesting subjects. The main issue, apart from the fact that it starts off with rape, is that I feel the story should have been wrapped up several volumes ago already. There have been several points in the story of character development where one could have drawn the line, but not only are new chapters released at a very slow pace, it mostly just feels like it is drawn out for the sake of drawing more smut. The character development keeps spiralling backwards just for the main characters to be confronted with the exact same issues. It's great that they always talk things out, but they always find themselves back at the same problem.
I really like Takanaga's art, though, but that too isn't enough to keep me reading. For a series of which I had conflicted feelings from the start, I just don't see myself waiting around for yet another volume and hoping it's the last. I've read up to 12 volumes and feel that it is time to drop this one.
4,5 stars ^-^ So, it might be my favourite volume in the series. What was it just now? Charcter growth? I wasn't expecting that.
Morinaga spent the whole series so far being delusional and disconected from reality, but in this volume he got a glimpse of the actual state of things. Also, he more or less comes to terms with his past. And there's an actual, though not explicit, allusion to his ptsd.
Soichi's perception of morinaga also shifts from regarding him as annoying pet of some sort to discovering that he could actually keep something from senpai. /it's not always about you, soichi/ And then there's the scene of soichi hallucinating, which was weirdly beautiful.
I'm 90% sure that all the character growth will be neglected in later chapters, but i want to believe that it won't.
As this series progresses, we are moved out of Morinaga’s thought processes and more into Tatsumi’s inner turmoil. Whether he likes it or not, he’s falling hard for Morinaga. But he’s still unwilling to admit it either to Morinaga or to himself.
But time and tide wait for no man and, while Tatsumi is working himself into a lather, complications new and old enter Morinaga’s life, forcing Tatsumi to confront his feelings and face his fears for his future.
While there is no sex in this volume, I hardly noticed, given the rising tension among the main characters. It’s going to take more than the casual sexual hijinks of previous volumes to rectify the situation Tatsumi and Morinaga find themselves in and Takanaga has created a perfect emotional cliffhanger for volume eight. Superbly done.
Very big progress in this volume. This is what I liked when I first started reading the series; all of the emotions. Sometimes I want to hit Souichi over the head for being such a bastard, but it definitely gives the series an intensity as you watch and wait for him to just figure it out all ready. While I wasn’t interested in Masaki in the 5th volume, where he featured predominately in the second half of the volume with Morinaga’s older brother, I liked him in this volume. The artwork is pretty good, and consistent in all the volumes. The cliffhanger at the end of the volume will have you grabbing for the next volume.
Amo o Isogai porque me faz rir que nem louca; é definitivamente umas das minhas personagens preferidas e acho uma pena que ele não apareça mais. Gostei muito de toda a participação do Masaki e do efeito que isso teve no Tatsumi. Não gostei do facto de este volume terminar numa parte crítica porque o meu kokoro não aguenta estas coisas T-T Quero um Isogai para mim ;;
September, 2020 (2nd reading) Still 5 glorious stars!
Ohgod this volume has been so frustrating but so good at the same time! Senpai is finally starting to realize some of his feelings for Morinaga aren't as "friendly" as he wants them, but he's so stubbornly rejecting them and thus hurting Morinaga. Oh and Masaki just gives the spice we need and the little push Senpai needs
My favorite so far! While Tatsumi's violence takes it down a notch, the depth of his confusion floors me when I think of how dejected and cast-off Morinaga feels in counterpoint. I'm so happy where this left off, it could be the end of the series (is it?) and I'd be satisfied.
