Victoria's favourite things are blustery walks, golden retrievers and Argentinean red wine.
This started off as good but then it became annoying.
I quite liked all 3 female characters to begin with. Stevie was my favourite, followed by Aurora and Lori. All 3 of them were interesting and seemed like strong female characters but towards the end I really didn't care what happened to any of them.
The premise of the story and the background of the island and what was going on there was really interesting and I would have liked there to have been more on this and more on the people who were the victims of the scheme going on there.
The men in this book, my God I didn't like any of them! Normally in these books the girls find out what horrible men they are involved with and they get out etc but the ending of this couldn't have been more the opposite. I found myself extremely disappointed with the ending and the women in general. The men were weak and (for want of a better word) evil, the truth doesn't come out and everyone basically gets on with things. So really what was the point in the story?
I have given it 3 stars because I did enjoy the first half of the book but overall I found it lacking. Shame because I actually normally love these type of books.
When I read Victoria Fox’s debut novel, Hollywood Sinners, last year I was massively impressed. It was opulent, it was larger-than-life, and it seemed Fox was the heir apparent to Jackie Collins’s throne. It would then be safe to say that the wait for her new novel seemed endless. For me, it couldn’t come around quick enough as I waited to see what Fox would do next. Where it would be set, who would be in it and what would happen that was so shocking and so scandalous you forgot it was fiction. When I heard it was going to be set on an island, an island with secrets, well, I was sold and as soon as I received the novel I began to read it, expecting a book just as good as her first novel. Sadly though Temptation Island failed to tempt me.
I can’t seem to pinpoint what Fox did wrong with Temptation Island that was different to Hollywood Sinners. It had three gorgeous females with the world at their feet – and secrets they’re keeping, obviously – it had villains straight out of a cheesy movie, and it had what could have been a glorious setting. Had the novel actually been set on Cacatra, the alleged temptation island. Thing is, when a novel promises you a glorious island as its setting and it takes almost 400 pages to get there, you’re always going to be disappointed. And I was. Somehow it just didn’t work. Aurora, Lori and Stevie weren’t captivating enough to carry 400 pages of a novel before it got to the bit that was really, really shocking. Aurora and Lori especially. Aurora was just your typical spoiled Hollywood princess and she was so one-dimensional it hurt. Lori was the opposite of that, but still a stereo-type. Sweet, innocent, yada yada. Obviously meant to be the ying to Aurora’s yang but both were so far bad or so far good that it seemed a caricature. Stevie was the only character I really cared about but if I’m being honest, I don’t even know why she was in the novel. “Fame at her best friend’s expense” is what its billed as, but it wasn’t really like that. Or at least not the way it sounds.
I suppose I just felt mis-sold. I felt like I was reading a different book to the one the cover and the synopsis promises. And I’m sorry, but the big massive secret was improbable. It’s the most stupid thing ever. It felt as if it belonged in a crime novel rather than a Chick Lit novel. It just didn’t fit with the theme, not really. Everything just felt off. The characters were just playthings, the behaviour of the villains was funny not scary, and I can’t get my head around what Lori does. She becomes fascinated by a man named JB and I just kept waiting for her to see him for his true self, because believe me, he wasn’t how Lori saw him and I saw it a mile off. It was creepy. It was all just a bit horrible, really, which is a shame. Hollywood Sinners was an excellent novel and with Temptation Island Fox has sort of un-done all the work she did with her first book. It just didn’t work. The island idea is a good one, yes, but the rest of it should have been done differently. I don’t know how, but it just should have. Here’s hoping Fox can deliver the goods with her third novel.
WELCOME TO PARADISE Only the rich are invited. . . only the strongest survive Fame. Money. Success. Lori wants them, Aurora is being destroyed by them and Stevie’s got them at her best friend’s expense. These three women are drawn unwittingly to the shores of Temptation Island, all looking for their own truth.
But they discover a secret so shocking, there’s no turning back. It’s wicked, it’s sensational. Are you ready to be told? But the glittering waters drown dark secrets. The island promises the one thing money can’t buy – and the price is devastating…
'Temptation Island' by Victoria Fox is so much more than your average bonkbuster. Here is a book that I was drawn to primarily for its glitzy cover - I'll admit that until I'd discovered this book, I hadn't heard of Victoria Fox but when I saw the comparison being made to the work of Jackie Collins, well, I knew I had to give it a go.
Over the course of two days (and nights!), I was completely caught up in the glamorous and often dangerous world of three strong and successful women. As we learn more about them, we discover that it's much more than fame and fortune that will end up bringing these three woman together. Although the three women, Loriana, Stevie and Aurora lead very different lives, they will all eventually be drawn together, to the famous celebrity retreat island of Cacatra, to uncover deadly secrets, seek out answers and expose years of lies. Will they all survive? What devastating secrets does the island hold, and for who?
This book seems to have it all and I was pleasantly surprised. It's a bit of a saga at over 600 pages but given that I devoured it in two days, that is probably testament to how engrossing it actually was. There are lies and scandal in abundance, secrets that have the power to destroy the lives of those involved. There are bad boys, good boys and deliciously wicked boys. There is murder, suspense and best of all, a compulsion to keep turning those pages.
I loved this book. No slow parts at all and perhaps more surprisingly, considering the length of this novel, no unnecessary 'padded' parts. Every chapter was relevant, and of course, hideously juicy. I was actually disappointed to reach the end of this novel, it was such an easy, engaging and fun read.
Victoria Fox is definitely a new author on my radar. If you're a fan of Jackie Collins and Nigel May, then you'll love this. Escapism at its best. Highly recommended.
Wow. I have not read a book like this, what used to be termes a Bonkbuster since the heady summers of the 80s and Jackie Collins. As I am on a mission to decrease my huge tbr pile this had been sitting on ny bookshelves for 10 years along with 2 of her others. Why have I left it so long! It transported me from our dull non existent British summer to Hollywood, New York, Paris and beyond. Reminiscent of the Lucky, Sa tangelo, Rock Star tales, I absolutely loved it!! Over a whopping 600 pages its taken me 11 days but I have savoured it slowly. So glad I still have her others to read.
Temptation Island is quite a lengthy book which initially I thought was chic lit, but probably leans more towards women’s fiction given there are three female protagonists and it spans several years of their lives until the present day. Three fascinating women: Lori Garcia, Aurora Nash and Stevie Stellar are attractive and young and in the spotlight, all for different reasons.
Lori’s story begins very much like Cinderella’s; her mother is dead, her father has remarried to a horrible woman with two daughters who become Lori’s evil step-sisters. But that’s where the similarities cease, because Lori isn’t whisked away by a handsome prince, rather she encounters the dangerous Jean-Baptiste Moreau who runs a successful modelling agency in the public domain and a more sordid business behind closed doors. The moment he steps in and saves her from the grasps of her ex-boyfriend’s threatening gang, Lori becomes infatuated with him. But it is some time before they meet again. When holidaying in Spain with her grandmother, she is scouted by a modelling agent from JB’s company and leaves behind her squalor to become a successful, well-liked model in LA. Her virginity becomes a huge media speculation and works to her favour.
Aurora, daughter of Tom & Sherillyn Nash-successful country singing duo- has been in the spotlight for less admirable reasons- sex scandals and partying (think Lindsay Lohan…) and she’s just fifteen. When she is sent away to a boarding school in England and befriends mysterious Pascale a French student she develops her first, real intimate friendship in her life. Their friendship leads to a sexual relationship but Aurora’s fascination with Pascale’s cousin JB drives a wedge between them. Aurora is certain Pascale is hiding something and when Aurora overhears a conversation between JB and Reuben van der Meyde she realises her whole life may have been a lie.
Stevie becomes a Hollywood celebrity when she flukes an acting audition and hits the big time after fleeing a relationship breakdown in the UK. She befriends vivacious Bibi Reiner who soon becomes caught up with the Hollywood porn industry in her desperate attempts to become a movie star. Stevie becomes involved in a whirlwind romance with movie director Xander Jakobson marries and plans to start a family. But Xander’s hiding something from his past and it has something to do with the business JB and Reuben are involved in.
The island of Cacutra seems to weave threads throughout the book with the author creating a mystery about its purpose and what exactly JB and Reuben are involved in. Temptation Island explores how money can buy anything, even babies. It explores the resourcefulness of the wealthy and at times I wondered whether the author was inspired by some Hollywood headlines such as Lindsay Lohan’s party antics and Keith and Nicole’s ‘gestational carrier’ used for their second baby.
It took some time for me to align myself with each of the protagonists despite the author delving straight into juicy scenes, especially with Aurora. Though the author has included a prologue to get the reader to think about the island of Cacutra and who will inevitably die there, it wasn’t up until the half-way point that I really knew where the story was going.
I wasn’t sure if Virginia Fox was going to be able to pull off all this glamour and scandal to create a story with depth and engaging characters- but she did! If you enjoy the celebrity and glamour of some chic lit on the market but would like a bit more depth, suspense and intrigue then I’d recommend picking up Temptation Island. It’s a saucy read, sure to be liked by a variety of readers!
I have to say, when I agreed to reviewing this book I hadn't realised it was 600+ pages! I think it would've been a great beach read had it not been so long. As it's told from three points of view over a span of three years, it's more like three books in one. It starts with a young boy finding a body on the beach, then goes back to tell the three girls stories and the mystery unravels until we're back to the end to find out who the body was and how they got there. To be honest, this book was so long, by 400 pages I'd lost some interest in finding out the mystery involving the body and all the other scandals that play out, I didn't find it completely gripping but it had it's moments. Of the three girls Aurora was my favourite, she truly goes on a journey throughout the book and learns a lot about herself which was interesting to watch/read, I was of course hoping she'd come out the other side more mature and a better person, but I won't tell you if that happens! Stevie and Lori were nice enough but they just didn't catch my attention like Aurora did, maybe my own rebellious past sparked a kinship with her lol. It was written well enough and wouldn't put me off trying more books by the author in the future, she did a great job of wrapping all three stories up together. I think I'd have liked it a lot more if it had been shorter or maybe split into two books but I did like it.
I've got to be honest, I'm not actually sure if I liked this book. It caught my attention at first, and I was interested where Aurora was going to end up once she started to become more human, so from that point of view it worked. I did wish there had been a happy ending for her and her self-described "soul mate", though, and a more conclusive ending to the big dramatic secret.
The big sticking point for me was Lori and JB though... two people who do absolutely nothing worthwhile or good throughout the entire novel except for each other, spend the whole time using people and discarding them (and in some cases, killing them), and get portrayed as heroes complete with a fairytale ending because apparently love is more important than pesky little details about whether or not you deserve anything besides a jail cell.
Super sexy, twists and gasp-out-loud moments galore, fabulous characters that you love to love or love to hate. Perfect bonk buster material and a damn fine beach read. My other half read some over my shoulder and decided he might quite like to try a bonk buster himself...
I didn't realise this was a Harlequin romance novel when I bought it. I haven't read such explicit sexy time books before. I actually enjoyed reading it!
I have read Victoria Fox first book Sinners which I enjoyed although I felt it didn't made a lasting enough impression on me. When I this book I loved the front cover and it immediately reminded me of the sort of covers that we see from authors such as Tasmina Perry and Louise Bagshawe. Something else I noticed was the fact that this book seemed a lot heftier than the last with a whopping 600 pages!
We are introduced to each of the 3 women Lori, Aurora and Stevie by chapter. The chapter tells you which character we are reading about making it easy to distinguish between people early on. However we also get flicked between the past year and the present day. This is only dome intermittently until near the end when things come to a close. Very early on it was easy to get straight into the characters and their lives as they each seem to have taken completely different paths. Aurora is the daughter of the famous singers Tom and Sherilyn Nash and as such is your typical spoiled Hollywood brat. Lori is a young girl who has lost her mother and is desperately trying to work to help her penniless father while her step family seem to be doing nothing other than to make her life hell. And finally, we meet Stevie who is a girl who has moved to New York and wants get as far away from her previous life as possible and start afresh.
The characters were all very well written and easy enough to read but the one big factor for me was the fact that I didn't actually like any of them! For some reason none of the girls had the `likeable' factor and for one reason or another I never warmed to them at all throughout the entire book. Each character has a lot going on and from the outset it is pretty clear that everybody is holding a secret of some sort and it all seems to surround the secretive Island of Cacatra. In addition to this we see quite a few main male characters in the book but once again I disliked all of them (which for me is quite unusual).
One thing that was nagging at the back of my mind is that I have already read a couple of books with this same format. Your `bonkbuster' kind of book; featuring three of four main leading female characters, which are all somehow interlinked. This is the sort of thing that Tasmina Perry does and to be honest, this seemed to be an attempt to recreate this type of format but failed to work in my eyes. I think maybe I am being a little critical in one sense, but can truly say that this storyline featuring a private island is not one that's original which is maybe why I didn't like it so much.
This book is certainly not one for the shy and retiring type as this is certainly a no holds barred type of book. It features heavily on the sex antics and depravities that affect the girls in different ways. The book picks up a bit of pace towards the last quarter and there are certainly a few twists and turns, but none that I didn't see coming. Overall, I get the impression that Victoria Fox has all the key ingredients to potentially write an absolutely explosive new book, but for some reason in this one and her last, there is something missing. I can't quite put my finger on what but I will certainly look forward to her next one in the hope that she has put the final ingredient in the blender!!!
I had never read anything by Victoria until Temptation Island and I must say that I have really enjoyed the story, but not only that, the prose is funny and clever too. I am looking forward to the next in my to be read list which is Hollywood Sinners.
Temptation Island is about the island of Cacatra. A luxurious setting surrounded by jewel like waters, it belongs to Reuben van der Meyde and attracts the rich and famous from far and wide to relax in its healing environment. Cacatra has a dark secret held within the depths of its luxury though and as the story unfolds, told by Aurora, Lori, Stevie and Reuben himself the secret held so closely by those who are privy to it, threatens to be revealed.
Aurora, teenage daughter of two of America's most prolific country singers, is in danger of going off the rails completely. At a loss for how to help her, she is shipped off to an English boarding school where her story really begins. There she makes a friend in Pascale, cousin of JB Moreau a man with connections, but more importantly a man who thinks of Cacatra as his home. Aurora starts to uncover some truths about her family and their link to the Island.
Stevie has fled to New York in attempt to put her ex and their drama behind her. A chance encounter has her world turned completely on its head as she finds herself thrust into the celebrity limelight. A joint venture leads to marriage to Xander Jackobson, who has his own links to the Island. As secrets are revealed to Stevie, she and Xander travel to the island to uncover the truth and protect those they love.
Lori is the Spanish beauty, with the poor upbringing and evil stepfamily. She also finds herself tied to the island as she is picked up by a modelling agency scout in Murcia. Lori, finally getting her big break finds herself faced with luxury the likes of which she has never known. When bad publicity surrounding a faux relationship threatens to damage her reputation, she finds herself whisked off to the Island where she promptly falls in love and finds her past coming back into her future.
Secrets, sex and scandal sums this story up. Brilliantly written, you will be hooked from the beginning. The prologue kicks off the excitement as we see a snippet of what the future holds for the characters, the story then unfolds towards that moment, building each character up in their own right. Throughout the book the chapters drip with suspense as each time a little more of the mysterious Island is revealed. A great holiday read for anyone who loves a good bonkbuster with serving of thriller on the side.
Haven't read any Victoria Fox before - but I grew up with Jackie Collins, Judith Krantz and Shirley Conran, so this book was on a familiar wavelength from page one. Some reviewers have called it a bonkbuster, others a "holiday read", but I must say that the author does what she does extremely well. Three main characters: Lori with the gangster boyfriend and nightmare family; Aurora, the daughter of two country stars, indulged and indulging in every sort of excess; Stevie, the unexpectedly successful actress. Add in the enigma of JB Moreau and by halfway into the book the stories converge, heading for a dramatic climax on the island of Cacatra. This book is really well written, never lost my interest, and I really liked the short chapters for what will inevitably be a pick up/put down read. Enough sex and sordid stuff for those who like it, but this book - while it might not win any literary awards - was a really enjoyable read.
Like I said before - such a huge book. I liked the ending but it was sort of like a mini wrap up. After such a huge story with so much detail it just seemed to give an a=overview of "What happened to them" and it was done. I would have like to hear more about Lori and JP and when he saw his baby for the first time. Found it quiet graphic in the sex scenes, it was a porno, mystery and murder all in one book. I didnt think it was a Chick Lit book. Once I got over the fact it was huge I did enjoy the story!
this book was a poor imitation of a galm novel.. The plot in itself was boring.. There was little to no wow factor.. The only captivating thing was maybe......i dont even know what! Yeah they traveled to cool places, cruzed on yachts, were all beautiful nd got their positions with stroke of luck.. A lot of strokes i think.. But it was just limp! The author, i thnk, got a little over board with her vocabulary using too ostentatious words for simple things.. Nd loosing focus on the big picture.. Definitely a no-go!
This was the first book I've red by Victoria Fox. I am a huge fan of Jackie Collins books, and i must say i am falling in love with Victoria Fox too! Even though this book was 600 pages long i really enjoyed reading it. Actually i couldn't even pull myself away from this book. However, i was a little bit let down by the ending, i wanted something more i guess. I really do recommend this books to Jackie Collins lovers, you wont be disappointed !
I'm not much of a chick lit reader but this was perfect for a bit of thoroughly enjoyable summer escapism - I couldn't put it down. There's enough glamour and romance (or whatever you want to call it...) to keep it fun and lighthearted, but it's all underpinned by a brilliantly concocted story line - this one's almost like a crime novel, with new twists coming out right to the end.
This Prologue hooked me right from the beginning, drawing me in, as the story slowly unraveled with every chapter! I LOVED the writing style, it was perfectly descriptive.
Reading from different character's POV's made it more interesting, but also annoying when reading about a character I didn't like (Aurora). I do wish that Lori's romance was showcased more. It definitely made the book for me.
Overall, a great mystery read with a sprinkle of romance!
Three women. One island. And a secret that will lead to murder.
And what a plot it is! Victoria Fox weaves an incredible adventure of mystery and intrigue with twists and turns so villainous this book will keep you entertained for hours.
Temptation Island follows the stories of three women – Aurora, the spoiled, wild child daughter of American Country & Western royalty; Lori, the poor girl with a face that makes her a star; and Stevie, a Brit who went to America in search of adventure and stumbled into a world of fame and fortune. A little long but still a great book.

Not a book I would usually read but it was recommended. I really enjoyed it the characters where well written and you could understand what they where going through. Will be looking out for more books by this author.
I loved that it has 4 different main characters/ stories and I could kind of relate these characters to celebrities! (Like the horny young singer was definitely Miley Cyrus :D) You do predict that they will all link to something in common but what kept me going was how?!
