Forever etched in my mind was being at the Rooney funeral home when I was barely waist high to anyone considered an adult. I was completely in awe being a distant relative through many branches. However, I did remember the Steelers paying their respects, the masses of people in a massive viewing area, and I was quietly taking it all in.
To this day, as I finished this in-depth account of The Chief, while literally taking at least three months to take in all the names, locations, events, some I do recall, others just from a brief memory of being brought up somewhere as we frequently visited Etna, Shaler, and Millvale areas and caught alot of Pittsburgh in my younger year - I realized how overwhelming it was to be Art Rooney. I also continued to realized how impossible it was to capture everyone who came into contact with him and admired him. I recall the Pittsburgh play titled The Chief, and just the complete awe of growing up in the late '70's and 80's with the Steelers and those countless visits to Pittsburgh.
This book is si packed full of Pittsburgh, it will need another going over to take it all in, but wow, the depth of friends, memories, locations, and acquaintances that told half of the story of who Art Rooney was and how he defined Pittsburgh, this anthology of individuals that attempting to do that, whew. Take breaks- and go back as you will not want to miss the details.
